If one of the mistresses was good with the official wife, their child would certainly never fall to such a state.

As soon as Zhu Yazai hit the floor, she cradled her broken finger and let out a sob. Though fully knowing what she has done, there were some twho showed pity for her, but Shen Tianyu just turned to Bai Yaoxuan, not gracing her with even one more second of her time.

Bai Yaoxuan undersood Shen Tianyu's meaning behind her action but she still had to ask the woman some things. Though she is indeed in Bai Yaoxuan's body, but all that the previous owner had experienced were only memories to her, she wasn't impacted by the emotions the girl felt throughout her short life. It was more similar to watching the movie about someone else's life story, she felt pity and sad on the other's behalf but she wasn't invested in her emotions enough for her to completely lose control.

Bai Yaoxuan stepped towards Zhu Yazai, who was trembling on the ground, ignoring the muffled noise from the woman's son, the stepbrother of her body. "Why did you target mother? She obviously wasn't favored by Minister Bai and I am not a male, making it nigh impossible for me to fight for the position of heir."

Zhu Yazai sniffled but didn't answer. Shen Tianyu felt the woman was pricking her eyes and kicked her. "What are you being such a crybaby for? Isn't it just some broken fingers? It's not like I ripped them off. Answer Yaoyao already!"

Bai Yaoxuan nodded in understanding before she turned to Shen Tianyu with a shrug, she didn't really care about them anymore. She didn't exactly want revenge since the person that had suffered at their hands is already gone. Even if she exacts revenge on behalf of the original Bai Yaoxuan, it would only be self-satisfaction and it's not like the girl would revive if she did. However, it also felt inappropriate to just let them get away with what they had done. She didn't believe that Minister Bai wasn't aware of what his wife was doing at all.

Shen Tianyu nodded, her face a mask of blank coldness again, completely contrasting to her disturbing appearance earlier.

Envy, jealousy, and fear for the future. Both of them was sure, even if Zhu Yazai didn't say it, that she was scared Minister Bai would fall for Bai Yaoxuan's mother sooner or later. There was no proper reason or evidence to feed those emotions yet precisely because of that, they amplify and grow. And because Zhu Yazai had no proper evidence, she couldn't get rid of the subject of her envy the "just" way. It is certainly hateful, but is it rare? Humans always fear the unknown, and that includes the indeterminable future. They also fear those that they deem better than themselves, in some way. If an official rises up the ranks too quickly, others will get jealous, envious, ad fearful of their own positions. They will find reasons to discredit him, framing him and convincing themselves at the same time. Once a person believes something, it is exceedingly rare to find a person that is willing to change their way of thinking when provided with evidence that opposes their worldview, especially if it concerns a fear of theirs. After all, evidence can be faked, can't it? When one becomes jealous and envious, they will find a reason for their emotions, an excuse for their growing hatred, to justify themselves. That rising official, in the minds of others, is probably viewed as using some kind of back door. And so, they frame him, using evidence they have made, to pull him down but also to convince themselves that their reasoning is valid, that they are not actually inferior. Because they refuse to accept that they, who have worked day and night, who have worked overtime, have sold their health for their current positions and more, to be less than someone younger than them. Refuse to believe that a person that has less experience and spent less time than them could achieve more than they. Refused to believe that fate has deemed someone else more worthy than themselves, more successful, more talented. And yet, they cling on to the belief of fate when doling out justice, when trying to predict the future, quoting fate when arresting that young and talented official who had done no wrong except being granted more aptitude than them by the heavens.
