Western food in her world had narrowed the term "dumpling" down to just pot stickers but in reality, there were more than twenty different varieties, and those were just the more well-known ones.
Shen Tianyu lifted the lid off the first bamboo basket to find shu mai[1]. Looking through all the layers of bamboo steamers on the table there was also shrimp dumplings, jiaozi[2] with it's dipping sauce beside the stacks, egg dumplings[3], wontons, and xiaolongbao[4]. Shen Tianyu decided to grab an entire basket of xiaolongbao first and a pair of communal chopsticks, which were put in boxes at either side of the long table, then went to find a seat. There's still some time until the contest starts and seeing as there are only a few people here, it wouldn't start anytime soon. She settled on a seat close to the food table, sitting down in one of the chairs lined up against the wall of the room.
There were chairs lined up against the wall of the room, except for next to and behind the food table. Closer to the door, the chairs were even more dense as they were piled together and barely allowed room for someone to walk through if it was full. However, there was a buffer area near the food table with no chairs in front of it, only the ones on the sides that were leaning against the wall.
Communal chopsticks were usually used to pick up food at a dinner table and place it into your own or another person's bowl. This way, the saliva that is on the pair of chopsticks you eat with, wouldn't get on the food you give other people. It was polite and sanitary. However, it wasn't like people would bring chopsticks to the assessment test. After all, that space could be used to store talismans or something instead, so the Sword Department provided clean communal chopsticks for use in the rest area.
As time went by, more and more people entered the rest area. As more and more people gravitated towards the refreshments table, so too did the pile of empty steamers, bamboo sticks, cups and dishes that Shen Tianyu had cleaned of their contents increase. Some of the people that had seen her eat couldn't help staring at her appetite. Some in amazement and some in envy. Eating so much but her figure is still so great, even some men were envious.
