As soon as he was out of sight, the participating students started chattering again, but this time, it was mostly focused on the rules he had just mentioned, unlike the mindless chatter from before.

Shen Tianyu, however, didn't know a lot of the people there so she didn't participate nor did others pull her into their conversations. Quietly sipping some water, she waited for the senior brother to come back and lead them on stage. After meditating for a while, the previous senior came back again and told everyone to follow him in an orderly fashion. Only when people were half lining up did Shen Tianyu notice that Miss Yang had also been in the room. The other girl pushed her way to the front and followed the senior with her head held high while some other students glared at her, however they couldn't do anything to a General's daughter and for those that could, they deemed it was foolish to get into a fight before the assessment even began.

Shen Tianyu, on the other hand, didn't really care where she was and just naturally fell in step with the other students. Being so far from the door, she ended up near the back of the long line. Everyone shuffled out into the stage area of the arena. When they arrived, they arranged themselves to surround the stage and wave at the audience or shout at any friends or family that were watching them.

The arena was also set up like a coliseum as that seemed to be the most beneficial structure to fit the most audiences without obstructing anyone's view. The stage area on the bottom contained a stone stage in the middle with engravings of the Shield Array it was so famous for, on it's side. There was a buffer area of 30 chi[1] between the stage and the walls of the stadium, which included the metal gated entrance they had spilled out of. The walls of the stadium surrounding the stage themselves were 30 zhang[2] high, in order to make sure none of the audience was injured in the event that the Shield Array wasn't functioning or a fight started in the buffer area where the Array didn't cover.

Shen Tianyu, just like the other participants, searched through the crowd to find Rong Jian sitting beside the smiling couple of Bai Yaoxuan and Ningwu Liushan. Beside the other male was Bai Longtian with a scowling face and arms crossed, his feet tapping the narrow walkway in irritation. There didn't seem to be anyone near him trying to hold a conversation with him.

'So, he really didn't have any other friends after all. Yeah, only someone like Senior Brother Ningwu could put up with his attitude and temper.' Shen Tianyu thought with a smirk as she slightly waved her hand. Rong Jian, at least, seemed to notice her half-hearted waving that didn't extend her arms to their limits like most of the other participants. Rong Jian waved back with just as little enthusiasm as she but she could definitely see the proud gleam in his eye.

The hosting elder was an old man seeming to be about 60 years old and wearing the light purple uniform of the School but with glittering gold instead of white embroidery. The emblem he wore above his heart also had two swords crossing each other atop of the school name. He signaled for the assessment to finally start with a shout, enforced by his spiritual energy.

'Hopefully, he has medicine and tea for sore throats ready.' Shen Tianyu cringed at the sight. According to Chinese medicine, Shen Tianyu was quite heated in her previous life, probably from bottling up a lot of things, and as a result she often had sore throats and fevers. She still pushed herself to attend school and work, though, albeit wearing a face mask. Just remembering the suffering made her feel unpleasant all over, despite having absolutely having suffered worse pain both right before and after her death.

Spiritual energy wasn't magic, even with magic you couldn't create something out of nothing. The technique to amplify one's voice using spiritual energy was just encasing one's vocal cords with spiritual energy to enforce it and make them last longer. It didn't erase the damage to it when you yelled for a long time, though it could sooth the pain. In order to actually cure the damage done, you still had to drink medicine and be careful when speaking for the next few days. The phenomenons one could achieve with spiritual energy might seem wondrous but, in fact, they could all be explained, even if you couldn't replicate it with technology.

There was a total of 276 participating students, the majority of them originating from the Sword Department. There wasn't as good a service as in the rest area so everyone stood against the wall, hoping to catch some shade while they listened, ramrod straight in order to look presentable, to the elder explaining the rules of the upcoming assessment. Though it was called an assessment, it really was more of a competition you would see at a large-scale festival. It was an event for the students to show off their resources and talent, for the Sword Department to show off their pupils, and the School to show off it's own attractibility and talent pool. One couldn't attract talented individuals with nothing, after all. Despite most of the students will probably leave after this week of assessments due to poor grades and performance, the truly talented will still be retained. And if luck would have it, they would shine in front of the public during this week as well.
