The amount of power relative to the spiritual energy needed to use it, the effectiveness of the talisman, and the amount of force or range it covered were all considered when placing a talisman on the rankings.

The Raging Flame talisman is by far, not the strongest talisman Shen Tianyu has seen, and faintness of the light definitely suggested that it was a "failure" on some degree but it was still low-middle rank, not something she expected a General's daughter to be able to pull out of her metaphorical pocket.

Seeing that her first hit didn't land on it's intended target, Yang Lihua got ready to prepare her next strike.

Despite narrowly missing injury, Shen Tianyu was still as unfazed as ever, not a hair out of place. 'Let's see how long this Raging Flame talisman will last.' She thought as she remained on the defensive. The Raging Flame talismans she was familiar with lasted from half a shichen[1] to two entire shichen[2]. However, those perfected products would never appear in the market.

Though she was still calm as the spring breeze, Shen Tianyu was having a harder time than before. Instead of parrying attacks by standing still, she began to dodge out of the way of Yang Lihua's strike. The audience could also see this change clearly, while the senior students kept glancing at the elders to give the signal to stop the fight. Talismans were not often seen in the secular world, even in the Chengyuan School. And the Raging Flame talisman was among the more dangerous ones. Pulling something this vicious out in a mere evaluation, crossed with a festival, was going a bit too far, wasn't it? But to their disappointment, the elders made not move to interfere in the match nor any indication that they wished for it to stop.

She had no other choice besides avoidance, really. The Raging Flame talisman Shen Tianyu knew, though it's range wasn't very wide, would raze everything in it's path. It didn't spread like normal fires would but it made up for it's narrow range with power. If she had to compare it, it was more similar to a high-grade laser gun. This talisman that Yang Lihua used was a defect but she wasn't exactly willing to risk it, especially after seeing it cause ripples in the Shield.

Even though she was constantly evading Yang Lihua's strike with her Raging Flame talisman imbued sword, she wasn't breaking a single sweat. There were various marks on the stone pavement and the Shield array was constantly ripping like an unstable bubble, but it had no signs of breaking. The singed pavement also had not aftereffects from the talisman so one could land on them safely after the blue fire passed.

As the imaginary incense stick burned out, the faint blue light on Yang Lihua's sword flickered and fizzled out. The effects of the Raging Flame talisman had run out.

'Hm... only an incense stick of time? That's less than a quarter of a shichen[4]. No wonder it appeared on the market despite it's power not being far off from the good talismans.' Shen Tianyu glanced at the scorch marks on the stage before she kicked the despairing Yang Lihua. Since she had no more use for her and didn't feel like playing along any further, there was no need to keep the other on the stage anymore.

Yang Lihua flew out out of the Shield Array, almost folded in half with her sword held loosely in her hand. When she crashed against the wall of the stadium, she slid down, not having a dent to keep her there. Even then, she did not utter a single sound, her head bowed down.

Having achieved her objective, Shen Tianyu no longer paid any attention to the girl and looked to the hosting elder to announce her victory.

The difference in timespan of a talisman's effects may not seem like much and it wasn't considered when placing one in the rankings due to the range of duration, there was a baseline. It is not explicitly written in the talisman rankings but there is a baseline, a minimum amount of time of the talisman's effects, for a talisman to be considered "successful". A failure may not reach that duration threshold and would not be considered successful even if every other aspect was perfect. As one who didn't study the Script, Shen Tianyu wasn't very clear on what causes the time difference and why there is a baseline when successful talismans can have a variable duration from one shichen[5] to several days. However, that was just what she understood as the "rules" for the rankings. Any talisman that did not meet those basic requirements were considered failures.

It wasn't hidden knowledge by any means, it was just that not many people knew besides Script Masters and the ones in charge of ranking the talismans, which happens to be other Script Masters. Mainly because no one bothered to, or dared, to probe into it so much. It was already considered the luck accumulated by several generations to even acquire a talismans, who would dare to question the Talisman Masters about their craft? What if they became displeased and took back their talisman?

Shen Tianyu knew because she was daring enough and curious enough to ask the Script Master residing within Yaodu. She even collected rent in the form of talismans and maintenance of array formations from this Script Master that others would kill, even their own family, to catch a glimpse of. Compared to that, what was asking about how the Ancient Script community worked?
