The next day, all three of them arrived at the School grounds, despite not having anything to do with the exams. Gongzhu Ming Yunyue of Mingya Nation, one of the people Shen Tianyu was close with in her classes, was participating in this exam. Some looked down on her because Mingya was the smallest of the five nations but most common people are not able to get close to nobility, much less royalty, so there were still many excited audience members.
"Now, let's go look around while they're gathering." Shen Tianyu said as she rolled up her sleeves with an enthusiastic glint in her eyes. Different from yesterday, she was wearing a light blue inner robe with a amaranth outer robe. There were peach blossoms sewn into the hems of the skirt and gold, tasseled butterfly attached to her waist. A light ruby teardrop on the collar rested right below her throat. It wasn't overly extravagant but it still gave off the air of beloved elegance.
"Shouldn't we go line up? Yesterday's line was horrible." Bai Yaoxuan frowned at the memory of being pulled to line up and then eking forward for, seemingly days, before she got to a seat.
"That's just because most people practice swordsmanship so the Sword Department's exam is always a big attraction." Shen Tianyu already paid for the paper bags of lotus crisp, honeyed lotus roots, three stick of lamb kebab and a whole bamboo basket of sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves.
"How come your hands are already full with food?! It's been barely three seconds!" Bai Yaoxuan shouted in exasperation.
"Hm? I just got them from the stalls nearby, don't worry, I paid for them all already." She stuffed one of the lamb kebab sticks in her mouth and pulled off a piece.
"That's not what I meant! And have you been listening at all?!"
"Yeah, about lining up. Yesterday was because it was about swordsmanship. Majority of people practice it so. One, there are naturally more people interested in studying others. Two, there are more people competing in the Sword Department exams. And three, more relatives and friends to cheer on the contestants. But there aren't as many in the Fist Department so traffic probably won't be as bad." It was really a wonder how Shen Tianyu could still speak clearly with her face stuffed with lamb kebab.
"That may be true but there is a Gongzhu competing in this exam so there might be more people wanting to see than usual?" Rong Jian offered to take some of the food off Shen Tianyu's hands and she gladly obliged. Even if he did eat some of the food she bought, she could just buy more. Neither of them was poor enough to not be able to afford some street food. At the very least, they were cheaper than some restaurants, especially the high-end ones.
"Well, if you say that, I'm also curious." Bai Yaoxuan looked around to try to find a stall not selling food but didn't find any.
"Ah, that's right! You signed up with the Talisman and Array Department, right? The Song siblings should have a stall set up somewhere, there's someone I want to introduce to you!" Shen Tianyu's eyes lit up as she remembered the eccentric but friendly Senior brother she had met through Song Yanqi and Song Chengyin.
"Hm? Okay, I don't have anywhere particular I need to visit. But, do you know where they're located?" Bai Yaoxuan looked again at the vast sea of people milling about.
"Um... they said they'd be situated close to the department... Let's go to the Talisman and Array department then ask around." Shen Tianyu held a finger to her chin in thought. Seeing Bai Yaoxuan's frown, she quickly reassured her. "Don't worry, we'll be able to find them. That Senior Brother is eccentric but friendly, a lot of people in the Department knows him."
Bai Yaoxuan could only let out a sigh as she followed behind the forever stoic Rong Jian and the carefree-looking Shen Tianyu. Despite people being pressed against each other as they moved, there was a narrow path cleared for them as they walked through the sea of bodies. When they arrived in front of the Talisman and Array Department, Shen Tianyu immediately got to asking the stall keepers nearby.
"Excuse me, do you know where Senior Wei Xianying's stall is?" She directly asked for the location of the stall, not whether the person knew this Senior Brother.
"Ah, you're looking for Junior Brother Wei? His stall is right there, a little bit far from the Talisman and Array Department's entrance but close to the Main Road." A young woman looking no older than eighteen pointed out the location of the stall with an amicable smile. "These Junior sisters must be new right? I'm not talking bad but I must warn you to be careful and not be taken by his flirting, that's just how he is to everyone. If you develop feelings, you will bein trouble." She warned the two girls kindly.
"Don't worry Senior Sister, I'm already engaged!" Shen Tianyu returned a friendly smile with a dash of mischievousness as she hugged Rong Jian's arm. He stiffened momentarily but relaxed himself and looked at her with warm eyes.
The Senior sister startled in surprise but quickly recovered with a "That's good" and gave her congratulations. They thanked her and strolled to the location pointed out by her. As soon as they were within earshot, a flighty voice entered their ears.
"Hey, beautiful lady, how about looking at the items we have here? They're quite unusual and interesting, if you find something you like, you can bring it with you to play with~"
