"Really? I want to try traveling how you do sometime. I'm sure it's much more comfortable, on the mind." Shen Tianyu added the last part in case some bothersome ears were listening. She didn't want to offend the merchants bringing them to their destination.

"A lot of fanfare." Nian Yingge seemed to agree with his fiancée as he said so with a face full of discomfort and a hint of annoyance.

"Well, that's to be expected of a Gongzhu, isn't it?" Lun Chang was leaning relaxingly on the side of the wagon, her arms on either side of her on top of the board that only came up to their thighs when they stood.

Since the overall social ranks of the people in this group were quite high, they were allowed to rest and enjoy the scenery for this part of the journey. The caravan settled down the night of and because they had just gotten out of the capital, there wasn't a town nearby, which meant they could use the camping equipment they had just bought.

"How do you set this up?" Ming Yunyue held a stake cluelessly as she stared at the camping equipment Shen Tianyu had brought out.

"You hammer these into the ground and tie the tent to in order to secure it. I'll set up the tent with Aoman and Ah-Chang so can you two do that? Make sure they are about 9 chi[1] apart." Shen Tianyu already anticipated that Ming Yunyue and Nian Yingge would have no idea how to pitch a tent so she gave the most simple-looking job to them. From her knowledge and experience, setting up the tent itself was more difficult because of all the different parts and how easily they could break.

The royal couple went about securing the tent with the pile of equipment in the middle. However, it was soon done with two people and so they were relegated to campfire duty as they watched the two merchant siblings and the one Wangfei from who knows where, set up their living space for the night. At least the two knew how to start a fire and what firewood to use. The group ate some food they had bought at restaurants the day before, still steaming hot due to the properties of their Cosmo equipment.

The merchants and members of the two other groups came over at the sight and wanted for some scraps, which Ming Yunyue was kind enough to give. The rest could only follow her example and perform a perfunctory act of charity though Shen Tianyu didn't really want to. The one who she was more than willing to give food to, didn't come over though. Well, Bai Yaoxuan was probably using the pouch she had given her anyways.

...

When the caravan managed to arrive at a town during the night, everyone would either loan money from the merchants or pay out of their own pockets for housing. When they weren't that lucky, they would camp out for the night and when they arrived at small towns and villages that couldn't accommodate them all, they took turns guarding the wagons and sleeping in the rented housing or inn.

Cultivators didn't need to rest as constantly as the average person but it would mean they weren't in peak shape. Since the energy that would have been saved by resting or sleeping would be burned throughout the night and the need for energy could dip into their spiritual energy reserves.

The merchants and the School seemed to have reached an understanding on this so the leader of the caravan invited the students for rest even when the hired mercenaries were grumbling complaints.

...

When the caravan arrived at their destination, it was time for the students to disband. The third group was going a bit further west than where Shen Tianyu and Ningwu Liushan's group were heading. The two groups that were familiar with each other took went with a smaller group, whose job was to bring supplied to Qiongqi Village to their final destination. The group was quite small, consisting of only about the same number of people as the student guards. They were a bit skeptical about having children, and high-class ones that probably never even broke a nail at that, escorting them but it was better than paid mercenaries since they were going in the same direction. And cultivators were sturdier than your run-of-the-mill mercenaries anyways.

...

"Wow, this place looks pretty beat up." Lun Chang commented when the village entered the periphery of her vision.

The fields were either ravaged beyond recognition or didn't hold any crops at all. Fences were destroyed and laying in the dirt to be devoured by ants and fungi. The houses that they could see had hastily patched up roofs and holes in the wooden walls that the residents have not had the time to fix yet. The few faces they could see peering out of the various gaps in the residences had frayed hair and faces caked in mud. The snippets of clothes that could be seen were frayed and numerous stiches suggesting long usage time were evident.

"Why haven't they left this place yet? Surely, they could make a living elsewhere." Bai Yaoxuan commented with a concerned face.

"There are even children here. How could they gamble the lives of their young like this?" Ming Yunyue was appalled by the fact that children were living in such conditions when there were other options.

"It would be understandable if there were elderly still here but having children stay is too much." Ningwu Liushan agreed.
