"Are you serious? You're not lying? Let me see!" Shen Tianyu reached her hand out to snatch away the piece of paper but paused and instead held Rong Jian's shoulder at the last second and leaned next to him to read the poster.
"It's true... Wow, I can't believe this... you're unexpectedly good at finding these things." Shen Tianyu tried to contain her excitement but there a still a sliver of happiness in her tone.
"So, should we take this one?" Rong Jian turned to her but unbeknownst to her, his ears turned red when he noticed how close she actually was. He immediately redirected his attention back tot he piece of paper she was still reading.
"Take, of course we'll take it! How could we not?" Shen Tianyu finally removed herself from Rong Jian's body and gave his shoulder a final squeeze.
The two of them submitted the request they wished to undertake to the instructor at the desk and signed their name in a book. The book noted what mission was being undertaken, who was going and the date.
They immediately set out once they were done with the registration, and since it was Rong Jian, they were able to ride out of the city on horseback. The place indicated was a bit far but not far enough to be of concern, they should be back before the classes resume for the rest of the student body.
"I say, I'm surprised that educational institution is still standing with so much time taken off each month." Shen Tianyu commented as they travelled down the dirt road outside the capital city.
"Well, the First Headmaster believed experience played a big part in a cultivator's growth and that it was no use "memorizing dead books1" so he developed this system. At least, so I've heard. It might have become exaggerated throughout the generations though." Rong Jian replied as their horses trotted away from civilization.
"Experience is important but learning new techniques are important too. There must be a good balance otherwise it won't work out. I think there aren't enough classes, on the other hand." Shen Tianyu countered. 'Not that I need more classes but just objectively speaking.' She remarked in the back of her mind.
"I also agree but it is true this method had strengthened the students, at least the ones that have just started cultivation so I guess they won't be changing the system anytime soon." They started to gallop their horses once they deemed they were far enough from the city gates and rushed to the place the mission indicated.
Thankfully, they were able to reach it in two days without needing to switch out their horse. They didn't know who put in the request but this mission didn't require them to interact with the client so they'll just report back to the School and have them take care of the rest.
They left their horses at the nearest town and went up the mountain on foot. Though they had put the focal point on the miasma in the valley, the reason that the client was concerned enough to send in a request to the School was because the amount of demonic beasts in the mountain seemed to have increased. There were more of them attacking townspeople that ventured outside the shabby, protective walls of the town, making them unable to pick up precious herbs that only grew in the mountain.
"This is concerning... some of these demonic beasts shouldn't be here." The couple had no trouble climbing the mountain even with demonic beasts coming after them every so often. However, some of the demonic beasts they encountered usually wouldn't be found in the periphery of mountains.
"It is indeed a bit concerning, do you want to still keep going, Wifey?" Rong Jian asked his wife as he casually sliced another demonic beast in half.
"Well... this can be explained unlike the incident back at Qiongqi Village so it should be fine. No pain, no gain after all." Shen Tianyu walked beside him as they strode up the mountain.
When they finally reached the top of this particular mountain, the sun was already kissing the horizon. When they looked down, they could see a dense fog covering the valley below the mountain, which was surrounded on all sides. It was so dense that they couldn't make out what was beneath the layer of fog, neither trees nor rocks.
"Should we keep going? Or should we go down to see now?" Rong Jian asked of his wife with his hands clutched behind his back.
"The fog is too dense. It'll be dangerous to keep going at this rate. Let's take a rest here tonight and go down once the sun rises." Shen Tianyu took out her camping equipment from her Cosmos Pouch. When the group separated, she had given the camping equipment they collectively bought to the others, much to their dismay.
'Honestly, I'm fine with just sleeping in a cave or even the forest floor but since Rong Jian was coming with me, I should try to make the trip as comfortable as I can without infringing on utility.' She thought as she went back to the shop after inviting her partner that day. She bought another set of camping equipment, the same as before.
Rong Jian helped her set up their little camp atop the mountain, overlooking the valley. At least, from this position, they can see if a danger is approaching them, whichever side it was coming from.
They started a fire in the shadows of the trees and took out their haul for the day. They did take a few animals for emergency rations on their way up the mountain, though because of the increase in demonic beasts, there weren't many.
"... Are those fires I see on the other mountains?" Shen Tianyu spoke as they were cooking a boar over the fire.
"Hm?" Rong Jian looked at his wife before following the direction she was gazing at. "Looks like word spreads fast. Well, this much is to be expected since the request even reached the Chengyuan School. I'm more surprised they didn't send someone to look immediately."
"Maybe the person looking over the requests don't know. There aren't many people that know about the reason behind miasma suddenly appearing." Shen Tianyu turned her attention back to the cooking boar meat.
