Chapter 192 - Unwanted Fame (3)

The group spent the rest of the day searching the island, but they couldn't find the mysterious sign.

However, no matter where they went, someone would immediately recognize Bei Nuan.

Bei Nuan magically became someone that couldn't be mentioned by name. Everyone on the island called her "that F" as if that was her code name.

The supposed number of zombies she had killed also snowballed. From morning to now, her supposed kill count kept rising.

Bei Nuan suspected that the islanders had already put her on the same level as someone like Lu Xingchi, who could wipe out countless zombies in an instant and fill the sky with a shower of arrows with a wave of his hand.

Soon, dusk arrived. The sun sank behind the mountains, and the sky darkened.

Du Ruo was tired from walking all day. He rubbed his hands and asked, "Want to go to the market to eat more barbecued sparrows?"

He hadn't eaten enough yet. They would be leaving in a few days, and he wouldn't be able to eat anymore.

Bei Nuan covered half of her face by pulling the hood of her assault jacket over her head and pulling up her zipper. "Let's go."

The market was as lively as ever, but the familiar smell of barbecued sparrows was gone. They went around the market, but they didn't see Little Shao.

Bei Nuan said, "I'll go ask around."

Tang Tang asked, "There's so many people. Who are you going to ask?"

Bei Nuan looked at the stalls on both sides of the street and decided. "Let's go ask that uncle, who's selling baked cassava chips. They're in the same type of business. He might know."

Lu Xingchi touched her hooded little head. "Bei Nuan, your logic is really good."

That sounded sarcastic no matter how one interpreted it.

However, his sarcastic remark was wrong. The middle-aged man that sold baked cassava chips did know.

"Little Shao? I know!"

However, his attention shifted. He carefully looked at Bei Nuan's face, which was half concealed by the hood, and probingly asked, "Are you that…"

On the side, Du Ruo happily finished that line for him, "F."

Bei Nuan: "..."

The middle-aged man was immediately excited. "You're the one that won a lot of cage fights -"

Bei Nuan corrected him, "I only won four games. Where did Little Shao go? Why hasn't she come out to set up her stall yet?"

The middle-aged man said, "I heard that Little Shao fell when she went up the mountain to catch sparrows this morning. I think her leg is broken. She hobbled her way back home. She should probably be at home resting now."

Bei Nuan and Du Ruo looked at each other and asked in unison, "Where's her home?"

After getting Little Shao's address, they thanked the middle-aged man and turned to leave.

Bei Nuan heard the middle-aged man shout from behind them.

"Did you see? It's that F. I just spoke to her! It's that F that fought for several days, winning every day, and killing lots of zombies!"

Bei Nuan: "..."

It wasn't hard to find Little Shao's home. It was one of the dwellings at the end of the market, the one closest to the wall. It was a hut constructed with stone and lime plaster. Although it was small, it had everything that a dwelling should have: a door, a window, and an earthen stove under the eaves.

Bei Nuan knocked on the wooden door. "Little Shao?"

There were only minute sounds from inside.

Bei Nuan hastily pushed open the door.

The door wasn't locked. The area inside the home wasn't large, but it was neatly tidied up. Although the ground was only compacted dirt, it was very flat and carefully cleaned. There was a small square wooden table by the window with wild flowers on it.

There was a bed on the innermost wall. Little Shao was lying in bed, wrapped in a blanket, and looked smaller than usual. The kiddo's eyes were closed, and her lips were chapped. Her cheeks were feverishly flushed.

She was quietly groaning in pain from her broken leg. She couldn't find a comfortable sleeping spot and kept shifting in bed.

"Little Shao?" Bei Nuan softly called her.

Little Shao opened her eyes. Seeing that it was Bei Nuan, she hoarsely called out, "Big Sis." Her hand came out from the blanket, and she held Bei Nuan's hand.

It finally occurred to Bei Nuan now that Little Shao was only a child. If there were no zombies, Little Shao would probably be sitting in an elementary school classroom and doing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

"Is your leg broken?" Bei Nuan asked.

"Yeah." Little Shao nodded. "I was scared of dying on the mountain, so I made my way down."

Bei Nuan thought; she said it so lightly, but it must have been very difficult to hobble down the mountain by herself.

Du Ruo said in a gentle voice, "I'm a doctor. Can I look at your leg?"

After getting permission, he lifted Little Shao's blanket to check on her leg.

After a careful inspection, he concluded, "Her injury is infected, and her ankle is dislocated."

He said to Little Shao, "I want to help you reset your ankle. You need to have your ankle reset in order to walk normally in the future, but resetting your bone will hurt a lot. Do you want me to reset your bone?"

Bei Nuan rarely heard Du Ruo speak in such a warm and serious tone. He looked like a patient and reliable doctor.

Little Shao didn't even hesitate for a second. "Yes."

The guys left the hut. Bei Nuan wanted to leave too, but Little Shao was still holding her hand.

Little Shao was a sensible child. Once she noticed this, she quickly let go of Bei Nuan's hand.

Bei Nuan held her hand instead. "I'll stay."

Du Ruo said, "Talk about whatever you want."

Little Shao didn't look at her leg and only looked at Bei Nuan.

"Big Sis, I lied to you. I knew you were going to win the cage fight yesterday, so my bet was only that you would win."

Bei Nuan was puzzled. "Everyone was betting that I would lose. Why did you think I would win?"

"I don't think someone with an F tag will lose for sure," Little Shao replied.

Little Shao weakly smiled at Bei Nuan. "You guys are good people. Big Sis, I'll tell you a big secret."
