Chapter 10 – The Bear Kid Garlan

Editor: SleepyMango123

The priests of Shamash, the priests of the sun, were impartial and unprejudiced.

The requirements for Shamash priests had always been very strict. First, one must be of superior aristocratic ancestry. Second, one must have a wealth of knowledge and correct judgment on assorted matters.

These were just the basics.

There was another hard requirement to become a priest of Shamash; in addition to going to the palace, they must also go to the battlefield.

Before the people, they must hold the sceptre as an instructor to teach them, as the judge to decide on various cases, and as the priest to hold sacrificial ceremonies. At the same time, they needed to be able to use the sceptre on the battlefield and break the enemy’s leg and smash it into a meatloaf…

At the very least, the minimum requirement to be a qualified Shamash priest was to at least overthrow five people on his own.

Ziemuer was the most orthodox and the most impressive of the Shamash priests.

In Garlan’s memory, he always had an expressionless appearance, was a stern man, and rarely revealed emotions such as joy, anger and sorrow.

Even if…

Even when saying those words to him, the Shamash priest looked like a stone sculpture, motionless, and then abandoned him without looking back.

That sentence……

【You can never beat Heimos.】

At that time, he was being pressured by Heimos. When he was in danger, the mentor he trusted and relied on the most said those words to him as he left him.

It was the last straw, which gave him the final fatal blow.

After the power of Shamash Temple led by Ziemuer was handed over to Heimos, Garlan’s power declined rapidly. More and more people followed Ziemuer’s footsteps in abandoning him and followed Heimos instead.

Defeated like a mountain, he was finally forcibly poisoned to death by Heimos.

As his whole body was burned by the poison and the pain was so terrible that he couldn’t speak, at the last glance, he seemed to have seen that person. His mentor stood behind Heimos, condescendingly looking down at him coldly. His emotionless eyes looked as if they were mocking his naivety and stupidity.

He closed his eyes weakly, plunged into the darkness filled with unwillingness and remorse, and again died in the hands of Heimos.

When he was reborn for the fourth time, he actually wanted to ask Ziemuer.

Why?

I regarded you as a master, like a father. You brought ‘Garlan’ up and accompanied him for eight years. I’ve always thought that even if everyone in this world would betray me, you would stay by my side.

But why…

Later, when he thought about it, he found there was actually no need to ask.

The words Ziemuer said before leaving him had already answered everything.

That man said, “You can’t beat Heimos.”

You can’t win.

This sentence was like a prophecy, or perhaps a curse.

In his fourth rebirth, at the beginning, he once thought about revenge.

It was just that at the end, he didn’t go through with it. It was because if he were to really do something to Ziemuer, in the eyes of others who were ignorant, he would be blamed. It would make those who followed him disappointed, and their trust in him would waver. So in the end, he could only gradually become estranged from Ziemuer, and then find an excuse to get Ziemuer away from him.

At first, he felt aggrieved, but as time passed, the anger and dissatisfaction gradually dissipated. After he calmed down, he could begin to understand why.

In his opinion, Ziemuer betrayed him.

But from Ziemuer’s point of view, the choice he made was what he thought was most appropriate.

It was true that Ziemuer was his mentor, but at the same time, this person was also the priest of Shamash, a priest of this country.

He just chose the latter between protecting a person and protecting the country.

The priest of Shamash was fair, calm and sensible. He wouldn’t be influenced by personal feelings, so he chose the king he thought was more suitable.

The so-called eight years… Perhaps, for this person, there were no so-called personal feelings at all.

When Garlan thought this way, his clenched hands slowly let go, and the air that was stuck in his chest when he saw this man also slowly dissipated.

He thought calmly.

Since this person doesn’t have feelings, why should I be bothered because of him?

Anyways, in this life, we’ll only have today. We’ll just be passers-by from now on.

Thinking about this, Garlan felt a lot more comfortable. He exhaled a long breath, leapt forward, and jumped off the stone bench. He quickly ran towards the middle of the hall.

Before he jumped down, a dozen or so children who had been waiting in the main hall lined up on both sides in order, one after another. They then respectfully received the paper and pen from the Shamash priest, and then went back to sit.

Everyone knew that Shamash’s priests were the most serious and strictest of people, and they never talked about human emotions. Even naughty children dared not behave presumptuously in front of them.

Therefore, when the priest did not speak, everyone was quiet, and the whole hall was silent.

Pa Pa Pa. The sound of pitter-patter suddenly broke the silence.

It was the sound of footsteps. Although not loud, at this moment, it was extremely harsh in the silent hall.

It was Garlan who came running that made that sound.

He had sat far away on the edge of the hall, and when he saw Ziemuer, he was in a daze. When he recovered, almost all the examination papers in Ziemuer’s hand had been issued, and there was only one left. It was obviously for him. So Garlan sped up and ran over to get the exam papers. After all, even if he didn’t plan to be the king’s brother, he didn’t want to do something as conspicuous as refusing to take the test.

His biggest goal now was to be low-key. Low-key.

Ziemuer stood there and waited quietly. He watched the unruly child run over with his short legs and frowned slightly, but waited calmly.

After the child ran up to him, he bent over slightly and handed the last piece of paper and pen to the child.

He commented, “You should have waited here, and not at that place.”

Ziemuer patiently taught this child to behave.

The child listened to him and looked up at him. The palm-sized face and the big almond-like eyes were round. The pupils were like golden amber stained with clear water droplets of the Enkiea River1. When the light fell in, it seemed to shine like the golden rays of the sun, so bright as if it could penetrate into the hearts of people.

This child’s eyes are as bright as the sun in the sky.

As the priest of the sun god Ziemuer thought in his heart, he felt a little less uncomfortable with this child, and a bit more favourable.

However, just when his mental state had just changed a little bit, the child glanced at him and snorted through his nose. Then he turned his head, shook his face, and ignored him. The boy grabbed the paper and pen, turned around, and ran away.

Ziemuer, “…”

He became the priest of Shamash for so many years, and for the first time met a child who shook his face at him.

Especially in the current situation, everyone knew that he had a lot of influence on choosing the King’s brother. Other teenagers were all well-behaved in front of him. Unexpectedly, this kid, who he had a little bit of affection for was actually…

For some reason, he seemed to be a bit… upset?

Of course, at this moment, Lord Shamash with his stoic face could not understand his own mood.

Forget it, why bother with a kid who doesn’t know the rules?

Thinking about this, he withdrew his gaze from the child who was dashing away.

Ziemuer’s eyes slowly swept over the dozen or so children who were sitting and looking at the examination papers seriously. These were all bloodlines of the royal family from different regions.

The previous King was poisoned several years ago. As the only heir of the ancestor, the current king, King Camos, urgently succeeded the throne. However, the young king who first ascended the throne was not yet an adult, unmarried, with no children.

The situation was now very tense. Foreign enemies were eagerly watching, and the country was turbulent. Only King Camos was left in the direct bloodline of the royal family. He often fought abroad and was born to die on the battlefield.

Every time King Camos rushed to the battlefield, the ministers were frightened, having trouble sleeping and eating.

Everyone knew that if King Camos were to have any accidents, the throne would immediately be vacant, and the kingdom that constantly stepped on the line at the edge of the cliff would probably collapse.

Therefore, in order to avoid any accidents, after many consultations, the cabinet decided that each minister would recommend an offspring with collateral blood of the royal family. The candidates would be within the range of eight years old but less than fourteen years old.

Then they’d bring these young children to the royal capital to let King Camos choose one of them and recognise him as the younger brother, and teach him carefully. Before the birth of King Camos’s heir, if King Camos were to have any mishaps, The King’s younger brother would succeed him, and the throne could continue to be passed on through the royal bloodline.

Of course, if King Camos were to have an heir, this well-taught brother could also become the little prince’s minister.

Thinking of this, Ziemuer’s fingers clenched slightly.

His eyes slowly and carefully swept over these young children one by one.

I must choose the best successor.

For the future of this kingdom.

…

After randomly finding a lone place to sit down, Garlan spread out the paper he had just received on the long bluestone table.

It was a pale yellow parchment, and it felt a bit hard because it had been rolled into a tube shape. Even if it was spread out, it’d still be rolled around the edges. Dozens of questions were written in small print on the parchment paper, obviously for the examinee to answer.

Was this a test of knowledge?

Garlan thought silently, picked up the snow-white quill pen, and looked at the rows of questions above, feeling very worried.

He was definitely not worried about not being able to answer these questions.

What worried him was that he should answer only a few questions correctly.

These topics were all about the basic knowledge of astronomy and geography of this country. There were also some questions about how to deal with trivial matters… These questions were for those who had been The King’s brother for several years and had received formal teachings, although they had failed to fight for the throne again and again. For Garlan, everything was very simple.

He could answer all of them with his eyes closed.

Regarding the others, he dared not say anything. But among this group of children, he was definitely a well-deserved schoolmaster who opened the rebirth plug-in.

But the point was, even if he knew how to answer the questions, he couldn’t.

What should I do if I get the first answer right by accident?

He had made up his mind not to be immersed in the muddy waters of the throne.

However, handing in a blank paper seemed too conspicuous, so he wondered if it would be best to get a middle-to-lower grade… But the troublesome thing was that he didn’t know how knowledgeable the others were. So, at this moment, he was distressed about which questions he should answer correctly.

While Garlan was hesitating, several servants stepped forward and placed a stone tray filled with ink on everyone’s tables. So everyone who was looking at the parchment carefully all started to write by dipping their writing utensils in ink and answering the questions.

The empty hall was extremely quiet at the moment, and only the rustle of writing could be heard.

And as everyone was immersed in writing their answers, the blond child with a quill pen and wrinkled face, who stared at the parchment paper in front of him motionless, was very noticeable. Some of the people who saw the motionless child, locked eyes with one another2. Some even turned their heads and whispered a few words in a low voice.

Ziemuer, who was looking around, also saw it and frowned.

He thought for a while. If he remembered correctly, it was the palace secretary, Xi Mei who recommended the child. The minister was very old. He was disinterested in everything and did not want to be involved in the succession of the throne. This time he brought that child to make up the numbers.

Seeing the child staring at the parchment paper in front of him, Ziemuer slowly walked over.

He stared into the child’s eyes.

It was like the sun, with pure golden pupils that shined when they widened.

The golden pupil was a symbol of the royal family and a symbol of inheriting the blood of the gods.

But as the long history passed, the blood of the royal family was more or less mixed with other bloodlines. In the current royal family, even King Camos, who was descended from the direct bloodline, only had golden-brown pupils. There was no need to mention the other royal bloodlines.

It was the first time Ziemuer saw such pure golden pupils without any impurities.

【That is the blood of the gods, the descendants of gold, the supreme king who rules the earth. 】

【He has golden pupils, like the sun high in the sky, allowing everyone to be bathed in his light. 】

As he thought, it turned out to be exactly as recorded in the ancient book in the temple.

There really was a pair of golden eyes, just like seeing the sun in the sky.

When Ziemuer looked at those pure golden eyes, it was probably during that moment the child saw him walking over. He, who was staring at the parchment in a daze, started to move quickly.

It might be because Ziemuer was standing in front of him. Feeling nervous, the boy’s shoulders were tense, and his limbs were even stiffer. Holding a quill pen in his fingers, he hurriedly poked into the ink cartridge placed on the table, as if he wanted to quickly dip it in ink and write.

But, he seemed to have panicked. The strength he applied was too much, and the tip of the ink cartridge that was prodded by him ‘just happened’ to move in the direction of Ziemuer who was standing at the table.

With a splash, the jet-black ink splashed all over the Shamash priest.

The air in the entire hall was stagnant.

At this moment, there was no sound.

The child who had caused a catastrophe was immediately frightened. His eyes were filled with shock and he looked at Ziemuer in fear.

…

In the opposite direction, a black-haired teenager slightly raised his head and looked over.

From his position, looking down slightly, he could see that the blond child who looked frightened had his feet hidden under the table with only half of his foot out, exposing the fair and delicate small pink toes.

His little foot swayed, quickly drew a circle, paused, and then drew a circle again. At the moment, it seemed to have revealed its owner’s joyful mood. Like a mischievous little pet, after causing trouble, it would scream in front of its owner.

The golden-red eyes bent slightly, revealing a little smile. Heimos lowered his head and continued to write on the parchment paper.

The author has something to say:

Garlan: Being a child is really fun, and being a bear child is even more fun.

A certain violent priest: Haha. (Notes it down in a small book).

  1

Enki, the water god of Sumer, was named Eya in Babylon and was one of the seven gods of Mesopotamia. Ranked third among the gods of Mesopotamia. Enki appears in Sumer, Akkad, Assyrian and Babylonian mythology. In the Babylonian language, it means “life”, so Enki is also the god of craftsmanship, wisdom, and creation. En in Sumerian was originally the title of high-ranking priest, but it was later extended to mean “king”, and ki means “earth”. Together, it means “king of the earth.” Enki is not a god of creation, but a creation by civilization.
