Things are looking a bit bad.

Sitting under the cracked stone wall, Garlan was deep in thought.

The original plan was to be taken away, and then make some marks along the way so that the cavalry could follow secretly. But the arrangements were all outside Vernal City; who knew that those ‘thieves’ were already bold enough to rush into the city.

Although he knew that on the way to the town of Ayre, two cavalry in disguise followed far behind, when the incident happened suddenly, these thieves acted very quickly. He was knocked out and couldn’t leave behind any clues. He was afraid that it would be difficult to track.

Moreover, Garlan had no idea where he was taken to.

He thought for a while, got up, walked to the rusty iron railing, and looked outside while holding onto it.

The gaps between the iron bars were not wide. As his body structure was petite, he could still allow his head to pass through.

And so, in the dark dungeon, a head full of small fluffy gold hair came out of the iron gate, looking left and right with a pair of big eyes, like a little squirrel sticking its head out of the hole.

He looked at the children who seemed to be asleep, huddled in different dungeons, and counted them in his heart.

En, probably less than twenty.

Garlan, who had his head out and observed for a long time, came to a conclusion.

There were no more than twenty children in this dungeon.

However, the numbers didn’t match. It was said that the number of missing and kidnapped children was almost 60 to 70, but the numbers here were not even one-third of that.

In that case, there were only two possibilities.

The first one was that the children who were initially caught had already been sold.

The second was that this was only a temporary transfer station, and all the children here were to be later sent to the actual place of imprisonment.

According to the little girl named Kerry, the children here were all caught in the last four or five days, so the second possibility was much higher.

As such, what he had to do now was to first figure out where he was, and then wait for the ‘thieves’ to send him and this group of children to the actual place of imprisonment.

Thinking about this, Garlan retracted the little head that had been sticking out, planning to go back and squat, obediently waiting for an opportunity.

However, when he walked back all the way, he inadvertently did not notice a child who was sleeping in the corner and kicked the child. Not only did he trip over and almost fall, he also caused the child’s body to be flipped over.

“Ahh, sorry—”

Garlan hurriedly stretched out his hand to apologise, but when he leaned over, he found that the boy who had been kicked over didn’t wake up. He was still asleep, with no reaction at all.

He suddenly felt a strange premonition in his heart.

Quickly walking back under the stone wall with an oil lamp hung, he saw that the old man and the little girl were sleeping, then turned his head and found that everyone else was also asleep.

…Something is wrong.

Garlan remembered that when he looked around just now, all the children were out cold.

At first, he thought that everyone was asleep because it was getting late. But on second thought, even if it was late, there would always be one or two children who were too scared to sleep, right?

He squatted down and stretched out his hand to gently shake Kerry, who was next to the old man.

“Wake up,” he whispered softly. Seeing that the other party didn’t respond, his hands began to shake Kerry’s body with more force.

It was not known what had happened, but the little girl slept so deeply that she wouldn’t wake up no matter how hard she was shaken.

Garlan tried to shake the old man again. It was reasonable to say that the old man slept very lightly and was very alert. He should have woken up easily, but the old man, like Kerry, was in a deep slumber. If they weren’t still breathing, Garlan would even think that they were dead.

What is going on?

Obviously all of them were still very energetic before eating. Some children were still crying, but now they all fell asleep all at once?

And yet I’m fine?

Wait a minute, “before eating”?

That’s right! That bowl of gruel—

Among all the people here, he was the only one who didn’t eat that bowl of porridge!

He suddenly figured it out.

Those ‘thieves’ must have added drugs to the food to make these children fall asleep. They wanted all the children to sleep, probably for the purpose of preventing these children from making noise while they were being transported.

If that was the case, the next thing they were going to do was…

Just as he was thinking of this, a clicking sound was heard, and the sound of the iron door opening came from nearby.

Without saying anything, he fell to Kerry’s side, closed his eyes, and pretended to fall asleep just like the other children.

The sound of heavy footsteps, noisy and messy, as if many people were rushing into this narrow dungeon corridor. Immediately afterwards, he heard the crisp sound of keys hitting each other, and then the creaking of the iron gate doors being opened one after another.

Someone was giving orders in a low voice, yelling, “Hurry, hurry.”

After a short while, with a squeak, Garlan heard the iron gate of the dungeon he was in open, and several people quickly walked in. One of them stretched out his hand and roughly carried him and Kerry on each side of his shoulders.

He closed his eyes and could hear the person carrying him whispering to the side. “What about this old man? Should we leave him here, or just throw him in the sewer later on?”

A voice answered quickly, “Take him as well. It’s best not to leave anyone here. We can throw him in the sewer later… No, let’s take him together. The group of little brats over there were annoying. We can leave this old man in charge of those little brats.”

The conversation was over, and the man went out carrying him.

Garlan laid on the man’s shoulders and his head hung on the man’s back. He slightly opened his eyes and saw a dozen tall men in the dungeon, each carrying one or two children and walking out quickly.

After going out of the prison door, there was a spiral stone step, which was also extremely dilapidated1. Except for the middle part that was often trampled on, the other parts were covered with moss.

In the gloomy dungeon, the ‘thieves’ were rushing to be on the road. No one noticed nor would have thought that a child, seemingly asleep, was secretly observing them.

From the spiral stone steps, they reached the top. The leading man pushed the heavy stones away from his head and emerged from the ground. The others followed suit2.

Feeling the moonlight shining down, Garlan hurriedly closed his eyes, leaving only a very small slit, which was hidden by thick eyelashes. At the corner of his eye, he secretly glanced at Kerry on the other side and saw that she was still asleep but was smacking her lips. It was not known what she was dreaming about, but the saliva from the corner of her mouth drooled backwards onto her eyes.

The corner of Garlan’s eyes twitched, and he stopped looking at her.

The man hurriedly carried him all the way, and Garlan didn’t dare to look up. He could only see the ground under the man’s feet.

The ground was very flat, it was paved with large blocks of bluestone slabs, and there were beautiful lines. Garlan guessed that this place should be quite a luxurious building.

After walking for a while, he was suddenly thrown down, and his whole body fell heavily on the stone ground. The pain was so painful that he almost yelled out, but he desperately endured it.

Because he was facing up when he was thrown on the ground, he took the opportunity to squint and close his eyes quickly.

At this look, there was suddenly a huge wave that was set off in his heart.

In the moonlight, he saw a tall and majestic building that looked like a few squares neatly stacked one after another, standing up high not far away.

The constable office!3

When he entered Vernal City with Brother Camos the last time, he saw this magnificent building in the center of the city’s noble district from a distance.

This was actually the constable office in the center of Vernal City!

The hiding place of these so-called ‘thieves’ who attacked the people of Vernal City was actually the place that should have guarded the people instead—

While Garlan’s heart was tumbling endlessly, he was picked up and carried on his shoulders by the man.

The man had leather armor on his shoulders, which was so hard that it made his stomach hurt.

Fortunately, he didn’t drink that bowl of porridge. Otherwise, if he was rudely woken up by pressure against his stomach, he was afraid this pampered body would be sick and vomit all the contents out.

He resisted the uncomfortable feeling and gently flicked the cuff on his wrist with his finger.

It was a black cloth wristband embroidered with blue river runes. This kind of amulet was to pray for children’s health, and it was very common to see, so no one took it seriously. And now, when Garlan gently flicked it with his finger, two or three small black beads rolled out of the gap in the cloth talisman and fell to the ground.

Those little black beads were almost the size of sand grains, very inconspicuous.

Previously, when Garlan was preparing himself for this mission, he had agreed with Brother King and the others about two plans.

The first was that after he was arrested, Brother King and the others would follow and then find a place to capture them all.

Under the second case, if there was an accident and Brother King and the others were thrown off the lead, he would leave a clue so that Brother King and the others could find him.

“Hurry up.”

This group of people were waiting here because they had to join the other two groups.

The other two groups were smaller in numbers, but they also brought a dozen children.

Then, after the group of ‘thieves’ converged, they carried the children and swiftly entered a gate.

The road behind the gate was a slope, leading to the underground obliquely. Garlan smelled an unnoticeable stench.

He suddenly understood in his heart.

It was the sewer. This was a large sewer constructed under Vernal City.

Under every large city in Aaron Landis near the frequently flooded river, an equally huge sewer was built, crisscrossing like a net.

The specifications and standards of these urban sewers were strictly regulated by the state. They were very wide and must be able to accommodate at least one carriage. Moreover, there were usually roads near the sewer walls for sewer maintenance personnel to walk on.

No wonder the spies hidden in the city couldn’t find any clues. It turned out that these children were snuck out of the city directly from the sewer in the Constable Office.

Walking in the maze of sewers for quite some time, Garlan would secretly touch the cloth talisman on his wrist and drop some small black beads every once in a while.

After stepping out of the sewer, they entered a long cave. He estimated that he had already left the city and this cave was man-made.

Garlan estimated that after walking for almost half a night, the group of people finally got out of the ground.

The bright moon shone, and the shadow shrank into a ball under people’s feet. As expected, it was almost midnight.

With a bang, he was heavily thrown into a wooden carriage, and his shoulder that was hit hard by the hard bottom, throbbed in pain.

The child closed his eyes and gritted his teeth bitterly.

The guy who threw me twice, I’ll remember you!

You wait, wait for me—

In his heart, he wrote down the man who threw him around roughly in his notebook. Garlan, who was lying in the carriage, opened his eyes slightly.

The carriage body was like a large wooden cage with a thick railing in front of him… All 20 to 30 children, including himself, were thrown in. He could vaguely hear a low neigh at the front of the cart. It seemed like there was a horse pulling this carriage.

With the creaking sound of wheels pressing on the ground, the carriage moved.

Garlan only vaguely saw that this was a valley in the deep mountains. Surrounded by mountains and dense forests, it looked very well hidden. But he didn’t know exactly where it was, so he could only continue to secretly sprinkle small black beads along the way.

The carriage drove for a while, and the front suddenly widened. Instead of the dense woods, many huge black rocks appeared.

It was unclear whether those pitch-black huge rocks were natural or man-made. They were densely packed with small holes. Illuminated by the moonlight in the sky, the light and shadow staggered. The strange rocks were rugged, and the wind blew and screamed, giving one a strange feeling.

The wagon wheels were still creaking, and Garlan heard a sound.

An extremely weird sound. It was like singing, but also like shouting.

The voice was not unpleasant, it had a deep ancient accent and seemed to permeate one’s heart.

But he didn’t know why he had an uncomfortable feeling when he listened to that voice, as if there was something in his body moving and trying to break free.

The child lying on the carriage floor sneakily opened his eyes.

A red flame lit his face.

He saw in front of him, the place was surrounded by countless undulating strange pitch-black rocks, several erect dark slabs, and a huge burning bonfire.

Under the bonfire was a huge black cyan stone slab, carved with mysterious lines, using patterns and ancient drawings.

A man, dressed similarly in a black and cyan robe stood by the campfire. It was he who made the strange sound.

At the side, there were many people gathered around.

The people there were kneeling on the ground. Everyone was terribly quiet, no one made a sound, and the flames reflected the extremely pious4 faces of those people.

A child was standing barefoot on one end of the black and cyan slate, and the blazing fire reflected the child’s sluggish and expressionless face.

The boy’s brown-skinned neck and forearms were painted densely with mysterious patterns using bright red paint.

The moon was already in the middle of the night sky, and it was only at midnight when the strange chanting stopped.

-WARNING! DISTURBING CONTENT-

The man in the black-cyan robe stepped forward, slashed the child’s two wrists, and let the blood drip onto the same slate on the ground.

The child whose wrists had been slit still stood sluggishly on the spot, motionless as if he had lost his consciousness.

Soon after, Garlan saw it.

Amidst the sudden screams of the people kneeling around, the man in the black-cyan robe opened his arms to the sky, shouted, and then cut the child’s throat with a knife.

The blood gushed through the blood-red runes on the neck and forearms of the child who was standing blankly.

Then, the bright red blood trickled down on the black cyan slate, blended into the twists and turns, and dyed the lines a crimson colour.

The bonfire was burning fiercely, as if it had dyed the original bright moonlight of the sky with a hint of blood red.

In the wooden cage, Garlan suddenly closed his eyes.

He held his breath, his fingers clenched hard, and his fingernails buried into his palm, leaving deep marks.

That black and cyan robe…

Also, when that person stretched out his hand to the sky, the weird blood-red rune on his arm…

The An-Ki Cult.5

The evil cult that stirred up and spread the theory of subjugation in the country during the most difficult period of Aaron Landis. They deceived people into committing suicide, disturbed people’s minds, and almost caused Aaron Landis to perish.

In the past, King Camos, who returned after chasing the enemy troops out of the country, used iron and blood to ruthlessly wipe out the cult that remained unrelenting.

A few years later, when Aaron Landis had just calmed down, it started to revive again.
