The Chase

Don’t show any tension. If there is anyone who looks suspicious, they’ll search them thoroughly, regardless of their identity.”

“Yes, I understand.”

The city of Attica was the last one on the western side of the continent.

Now that the Unknown Assassin had disappeared from Asilla Palace, the city of Attica was the most likely place for him to flee to.

After passing the city of Attica, there was no place to get supplies for a long while. All around there were only dry wastelands and rocky mountains.

It took over a fortnight to walk to the next city, however, this wasn’t the type of terrain that could be traversed on foot. Therefore, one would have to acquire a ride.

After thoroughly examining the surrounding terrain, Veroz strengthened its borders in the city of Attica.

Other major targets were also being guarded by the Imperial Army, but this is where he came in person to direct the search.

After the Leshak Army captured Asilah Palace, the western part of the continent was in chaos.

The other four small countries, including the Principality of Flambard, formed a coalition and launched a large-scale pre-emptive attack.

Without any sleep, Veroz left the battlefield where the next battle was unfolding and came here. No matter how important it was to find the Unknown Assassin, he was anxious about leaving the fight behind.

Therefore, it was necessary to capture the Unknown Assassin and present him at the feet of Prince Leshak.

“Next.”

The procession to leave through Attica’s city gates was very long.

Being that it was the largest gateway to the West, it was always crowded with people.

He told them not to relax their vigilance, but when there were this many people, it was natural that their vigilance would loosen.

“Pass. Next.”

Next in the queue before the city gates, was a procession of spectacular carriages that were waiting for the usual inspection.

There were a total of four carriages. Three of them were wagons, and the last was a coach carrying passengers.

There were a total of two hundred and two in the group.

When asked about their identity, they said that they were subordinates of the Gett, hired as porters and attendants to the Gett’s entourage. There was no doubt about this group.

The Imperial soldiers counted. Three men and one beast were riding in the carriage, a hundred and two employees.

“Pass.”

The attendant in the front nodded. The Imperial Army removed the blockade for the carriage. At that moment, Veroz saw it.

“Wait.”

“What?”

Clattering!-

The blockade came down again.

“Why didn’t you check the inside of the carriage?”

“What? No, that’s…… It’s a four-person carriage, and their identity is clear.”

“Get out of the way.”

Veroz pushed the soldier aside and knocked on the carriage door.

“Ahem.”

The window on the door opened and the only son at the head of the Gett appeared.

“What’s going on?”

“It’s a checkpoint due to a wanted order. I need to look inside the carriage, is that okay?”

“Oh, really? A wanted order?”

“That’s right.”

“Ah, oh really. Someone must have escaped. Well, it has nothing to with us, we are people from across the sea so it’s unrelated to us”

“…….”

Veroz frowned.

He knew well enough what the Gett were like.

Amboia was a strange place where money took the place of status. Although there was no royalty or nobility, it was said that the Gett family enjoyed more extravagant power than that of a King.

So it was ambiguous.

They couldn’t treat them like commoners, and they couldn’t treat foreigners who roam around freely selling in such exhibitions, as though they were Ambassadors.

“Open the carriage door. We will need to search the coach.”

“Ugh. There are quite a few expensive things here. Will you* be okay?”

Moreover, that peculiar feeling of being talked down to wasn’t good.

The Crown Prince’s immediate guard, one of the twelve Guardian Knights, was the core of power in the Ibeden Empire.

it was only natural to get angry when a merchant who didn’t even have a title, treated him in an uncooperative way.

“We appreciate your* cooperation.”

Veroz omitted the honorifics too. And didn’t wait for permission.

Rattle!-

He opened the carriage door. Meanwhile, the soldiers stopped the wagons that followed and began to search inside.

“Oh, really. There are a lot of expensive things. If even one disappears, it will be a big deal.”

“Kik, Kik.”

There were three people in the carriage.

It was the only son of the head of the Gett, a young man who was his chief attendant, and Gett’s fiancee, who was meticulously dressed in a long blue dress.

The carriage, which was all covered in velvet and fur, was luxurious, but not large. There was no place for people to hide except for the space where four people could sit.

In addition, one of the four seats was occupied by a brown monkey.

“Kikk, Kik!”

The fluffy brown monkey revealed its teeth to Veroz, who entered suddenly. It was a party of both arrogant masters and pets.

Nevertheless, it could not be denied that his identity was certain.

You could tell just by looking at the carriage and saddles full of the Gett family emblems.

The reason why there were no charlatans imitating that emblem was that there were no people who could match up the wealth of putting authentic gems into the eyes of the raven drawn on the emblem.

Veroz looked inside the carriage and spoke one last time to his fiancée.

“I need to check under the chair, would you please stand up, Mam?”

“… …”

The lady in a long dress was just with the Gett party.

Veroz clicked his tongue involuntarily at the sapphire ring she was wearing. The large rings’ true purpose seemed to be more about boasting about wealth, than adornment.

“Mam.”

The Lady, who had been sitting motionless, slowly got up only after Veroz had asked again.

The dress that covered up her whole body, even her neck, seemed excessive.

He thought that all the clothes that are popular in Amboia were strange.

The veil that covered the whole face was also like that.

Also, the blindfold underneath the veil didn’t seem to be fashionable.

“Why are you covering your eyes?”

Veroz reached out for the veil.

But before that, the Gett noble intervened and embraced his fiancee.

Veroz saw the fiance’s white jawline tremble.

“Hey, wait. What kind of disrespect is this? Trying to touch someone else’s fiance! No matter how hard it is to see a beautiful woman. Was the chivalry of the Empire something like this?”

No matter what the man said, Veroz’s eyes did not depart from the fiancée.

If she took off those strange shoes with jewels in their heels, she would be similar in height and size to an Unknown Assassin.

Veroz had no intention of letting these small suspicions go.

Every day the dimwitted Karum talked about how pretty the Unknown Assassin was. He would talk about how women’s clothes would look good on him without any guilt at all.

“I don’t know if the merchant is qualified to talk about chivalry. A person who has a ‘wanted order’ issued in the name of His Majesty the Crown Prince of the Ibeden Empire is wearing a blindfold. I have to check.”

“Oh, no, you can’t.”

The manager slowly shook his head.

“You seem to know nothing about Amboian weddings. Before the wedding, the bride must not make eye contact with anyone. Because you never know what diabolical demon will come to steal the bride’s heart. Really, isn’t that just common sense?”

Veroz didn’t believe it.

Even if there really were such stories in Amboia, this place was lbeden.

“Nonsense. Why do you want to have a wedding in the western part of the continent where there is war?”

“It’s a family secret, so I can’t tell you. If you’ve made sure there’s nothing hidden in the wagon, why don’t you just get out of the way?”

“I haven’t checked Lady’s face yet.”

“Because that’s not possible.”

The Master of the Gett buried his fiancée’s face in his arms. The fiancee stood stiffly without saying a word.

“Even if the Crown Prince of Ibeden comes, much less his Guardian Knights, that’s not going to happen. Why? I am definitely going to have this wedding. It’s my destiny, I can’t let her see anyone and be stolen away.”

“The High Lord of the Gett seems to be paranoid. Don’t worry, It’s not about stealing people away, it’s about checking her face.”

“It seems that the people of the continent must suffer from mental disorders. How many times must you make me say it’s not possible.”

Then the chief attendant intervened.

“I’m sorry, Sir, but the search of the wagons is over.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yes. That being said, even the Knights of the Continent should know that the High Lord of the Gett has already cooperated sufficiently. So, as it has always been and will continue to be, I would like you to see me off as a guest of the continent.”

Veroz replied without looking away.

“You will not be able to use the continental road without checking your face. If you want to stay as a guest, act like a guest.”

“So, are you going to use force? A warring Empire against the Gett merchants?”

Ozdin erased the languid smile.

A sharp tension filled the carriage.

“You don’t take me seriously, a Gett merchant.”

“It’s the same on both sides. How can you take the wanted order of the Empire lightly?”

Veroz placed his hand on the sword that was worn at his waist. The sword that had not yet been drawn creaked, exposing a threat.

“Take off the veil, woman, or I’ll take it off myself. This is my last offer.”

Then the master of the Gett stepped forward.

“Really? Then I’ll have to make a final off as well.”

“What do you have to offer,”

The next words came out quickly and cut off Veroz’s words.

“Zorg! Go up to the roof.”

“… …?”

The brown monkey quickly slipped out of the window.

The monkey climbed over the roof and took a seat next to the driver’s, and tapped the driver’s back.

And…

Pfft!-

After that, the master Gett did something that no one expected. He grabbed Veroz’s shoulders and him.

“…… Ugh!”

Suddenly, Veroz, propelled by his body weight, fell out of the carriage. At the same time, the Gett entourage horses and carriages set off at once.

“Run!”

Heeeeh!-

The horses roared and the wheels screeched.

“Stop them! Damn it! The unknown assassin is on board!”

Veroz screamed as he barely managed to roll over and avoid being crushed under the horse’s hooves.

But it was already too late.

The Imperial Army had no idea that the Master of the Gett would engage in such a reckless act and missed the time to respond by a narrow margin.

They too were distracted by dodging the horses before being trampled on.

Clap. clap, clatter!‐

The Master of the Gett made a raucous and dust clouds, as he fled.

“What are you doing!? Follow him right now! Go and get my horse!”

Bellows shouted out, loudly.

The search for the Unknown Assassin turned into a chase on the spot.

“Absolutely don’t lose them!”

Veroz got on the horse, grinding his teeth.

Hey, hey!-

Veroz’s famous horse, one of the best in the Empire, let out a long cry.

It was the sound that signaled the start of the chase.

“Your Majesty.”

“Your Majesty.”

”…….”

“Your Majesty!”

“……What’s going on?”

It wasn’t until the third time that Leshak recognized the sound of the voice calling him.

Abadd stood there with his face scrunched up.

“Did you not sleep yesterday?”

“… ….”

After Radan disappeared he stopped sleeping.

It wasn’t just sleep.

Many other things disappeared. Pain perception disappeared. Even if the enemy’s axe was lodged in his forearm, he did not notice the degree of injury or pain.

His emotion disappeared as though it had been severed.

He thought nothing of seeing people dying right before his eyes. Everything was someone else’s affairs. His affair was out of his hands and wandering somewhere far away.

Leshak gave up on sleeping.

His body knew first that it would never be able to sleep again.

The day was as dark, and the night was white. Even with his eyes open, a nightmare unfolded in his mind.

A blue-eyed snake pierced its chest and devoured hearts bit by bit.

Whenever he felt the pain of it being ripped out, he was sure to cut someone’s throat.

When raised his head from the nightmare, there was always a battlefield.

There was no end to the throats waiting to be cut, and Leshak was relieved to know that.

Still, he knew that he could kill more.

Leshak gave strength to his wriggling fingers.

Unbeknownst to Abadd, he had just set foot in very dangerous territory.

Unable to feel anything, Leshak was now the most dangerous being on the battlefield.

“I asked what was going on.”

“The Principality of Flambard has informed me that it is willing to surrender. They said they would send Duke Eliche as a messenger. What should we do?”

There was no consideration, no emotion.

The fact that even the Principality of Flambard would surrender now that Kemened had fallen was a sign that the victory of the war was finally rolling in the direction of the Ibeden Empire.

A war that had lasted for seven years could be ended.

However, he felt nothing.

Leshak replied briefly.

“Take care of it on your own.”

“Your Majesty?”

Abadd approached him with a sad expression on his face.

“Stop.”

“What?”

“Don’t come any closer.”

Abadd slowed his pace on the spot. He knew now that a frightening tension blooming in Leshak.

“…… You must sleep, My Lord.”

He hadn’t given away his sleep.

It was stolen by the blue-eyed snake.

“If you want me to fall asleep, catch the Unknown Assassin. That’s the only way.”

Those words tormented Abadd like a man who hadn’t slept for days.

Leshak was not normal. Something is quite wrong.

All twelve Guardian Knights admitted that it wasn’t just a feeling of betrayal or anger.

The cursed Blue Snake bit the heart of the Leshak Caliph.

They were all curious and worried.

Was it the biter, or the bitten, who was truly cursed?

The one who bit ran away. The one who was bitten became murderers who wandered the battlefield without sleeping or eating.

The present Leshak was not Leshak. He was a hollow husk that looked like Leshak. If there is anything left for Leshak, it would be his will to catch the Blue Snake.

“I’ll do my best…… My Lord.”

“Alright.”

“Then why don’t you deal directly with the Emissary of Flambard?”

“… …”

Leshak frowned for a moment.

As cognition slowed, judgment slowed. The most serious problem was that his heart was not moving.

My heart reacted first that nothing else was worthwhile. He had to make an effort to show even the slightest interest.

Leshak asked, rubbing his bloodshot red eyes.

“Is it necessary?”

“If it’s Duke Eliche, then we can’t deal with him because of our status.”

“Bring him.”

“Yes, My Lord.”

Abadd disappeared.

Leshak remained alone in the empty Asilah Palace and closed his eyes.

The nightmare had begun without fail. Now Leshak felt that even the line between reality and nightmares was blurring.

He looked down at the serpent’s limp and lethargic limbs, as he licked his blood.

Their eyes met. The snake raised his blue eyes languidly and laughed sweetly.

– I like you, My Lord.

As usual, the snake had the countenance of a new unfamiliar Radan.

Leshak reached out to Radan. The hand outside the nightmare scanned the air in vain.

A handful of emptiness chilled his empty palms.

“…….”

Leshak covered his face with the palm of his hand.

The line distinguishing whether it was the nightmare or the nihilism that was so painful, was now infinitely blurred.
