Chapter 34:

Sky ski

Constantine:

We use the community teleport, and go to Ursula 588, where there is a small sky ski site. It won’t be as exciting as doing the sky ski without an oxygen mask, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t be a great experience for Noah. Besides, I have a surprise for him. One, I arranged at the last minute.

I help Noah put on his suit, and then adjust his air mask over him. Unlike the suits on Ursula 589, the suits on Ursula 588 support speech through the suit. So, at least we won’t have to deal with text to speech. I take Noah’s hand, and then lead him out of the domed area. We go to the ski dome, and then Noah stands rooted to the ground.

“Dad?” The boy asks, and then rushes towards his father. The older Naga meets his son halfway, and scoops him up in his arms. Daniel leans into me.

“How did you arrange that?” He asks, as his hand takes a hold of mine.

“I might have called Gregor, who called the people in Wendel, and might have told Hugo’s boss, that his help was needed for the case,” I say. Daniel chuckles, and we move towards the father-son duo.

“You have a day off?” We hear Noah ask.

“Technically, I am still on the clock,” Hugo says. I can see the shoulders of the boy slumping a little.

“But...” Hugo protests. His father swings him in his arms.

“Today I have a critical job, Noah. It is to have fun with you,” Hugo says. I can see that Noah is confused, by the way, he keeps silent for a while.

“Silly head,” the boy says, and I can’t help but chuckle. Hugo bursts out laughing at that.

“Do you still call people that?” Hugo asks. Noah nods.

“If people weren’t such silly heads, then I wouldn’t have called them that,” he retorts. I can see that Hugo is a couple of seconds away from laughing again.

“Maybe we should let them catch up?” Daniel suggests. I nod. Just as we turn to leave for another dome, Noah calls out to us.

“Wait! I want to have a ski race with all of you,” the boy says. I turn around, and see that he is down, standing by his father’s side.

“If this is what you want,” I say, and then slither to him. Hugo picks Noah back up, and we go to the domed area for the sky ski. We race for a while, then, our oxygen begins to run out, so, we go to recharge.

When we enter the domed area, Noah removes his helmet, and looks at me.

“I think I am ready to bottle the potion now,” he says, a bright grin on his face.

“No, you are not,” I retort. This must be exceptional to him. We can’t do any half-measures. “I have planned everything.”

“Things are going to get even better?” He doesn’t seem to want to believe me. His hand is clutching at his father’s, as if he is afraid that, if he lets Hugo go, then the man will disappear.

“Don’t you believe me? Come on, we will be late for the interview,” I say, and then pretend to have let it slip accidentally.

“What interview?” Hugo asks. I didn’t tell him about this part because I wanted for this to be a surprise for him as well.

“Your job interview,” I tell him. “You are an electrician. Manacom back in Mirstone is looking for someone to help keep Roddy in top-notch condition.”

“Dad can come back home?” Noah asks, and looks at his father. “You’ll do your best to get the job, right, dad?”

Hugo looks uncertain for a while. He looks me straight in the eyes, and then speaks.

“They weren’t hiring last time I checked,” he tells me.

“They didn’t know as much as they do now. Besides, they barely had any funding back when you were searching for a local position,” Daniel says. He didn’t know about the job interview, but I am glad that he decided to play along.

“What is the paycheck?” Hugo asks. Ah, we come to the most important question. I have to remind myself that Hugo moved away from his family to support them.

“5,000 golden scales per month. Although, you won’t have any assistants. Still, you will have to take care of a single piece building,” I say. Hugo looks down at his son, who is smiling up at him.

“This is more than my current job pays,” Hugo says, and then takes in a deep breath. “If I can pass the interview, then I will be happy to work at Manacom.”

I nod, and lead him towards the conference room, where there is already a video call pending. Hugo hugs his son briefly, pats him on the back, and then closes the door in our faces. Noah scrunches up his nose at that.

“Why couldn’t I go in?” The boy asks.

“Well, you know how things are. Only the person who is applying for the job may be in the job interview room,” I tell him. For good measure, I pick him up, and carry him to a nearby bench. Then, I turn towards Daniel. “Daniel, the special surprise.”

Daniel is quick to take out a plushy from the innermost pocket of his jacket. It is not an Illity one, but, rather, a teddy bear.

“What is this?” Noah asks, as Daniel hands him the beige plush toy.

“I figured that, seeing as you are a very understanding young man,” Daniel begins, a smile blossoming on his face, when Noah preens under the praise. “I could introduce you to some things from my home planet.”

“This is from Earth?” Noah asks. Daniel pulls out his phone, and shows him a picture of a bear. Noah touches the screen, and puts it on hologram mode. That doesn’t seem to satisfy him because he decides to use the life-size function of the phone.

“Wow,” the boy says, as he begins to circle the hologram of the bear. “How did it get so fat?”

Daniel begins to explain the different types of bears then, as we wait for Hugo to get out of the conference room.
