Chapter 44:

Forgiveness

Frederik:

“You are really here. I... I am so sorry, songbird,” I tell the lovely vision before me. Ray hovers a hand over my own. I take the initiative, and twine our fingers. Back then, when the whole debacle happened, and Ferenc lost his mind over Robin kissing me, Ray had no other choice, but to take Robin’s side. They are twins, just like Ferenc and I, after all.

“I missed you,” his voice is still like that of bell chimes. Gods, if we only didn’t go to that party, we might have been married by now.

“Is there no way to make it up to you?” I ask Ray. Yes, what we did was grave, but it was more than 200 years ago. Surely, our time in the reprogramming facility and then our service as security guards of this company or the other, more than paid our debt to society off?

“Ferenc told you we were over, after he bit Robin. Robin could have died. You know just how venomous your bites are,” Ray tells me. I bow my head. “But, now, with the microchips in your heads, I think... maybe we can have a new start?”

A part of me screams at me that he is only saying these things to give me false hope. That, after the case is over, he will go back to being angry at me. Another part is hitting the screaming part with a frying pan. One full of boiling oil. The voice of reason dies a death I wouldn’t want for my worst enemy, and I smile.

“I have a permanent job nowadays. I work for Manacom as security. Have you heard of it?” I realize what I just said, and want to hit myself over the head. Of course, he has heard of Manacom. He arranged for me to have a leave from it.

“You can tell me all about it, if you’d like. But,” he bites his lower lip. His lips are just as soft and rosy as I remember. I lean in closer to him. “Fred, this is going too fast. You nearly bit me, back then. Remember?”

I lower my gaze, head swimming in shame. If only I was more my own person, than Ferenc’s twin...

Ferenc will never let me be myself, when there are people around.

Yet, he is the one constant in my life.

“I am sorry,” I say, and he cups my face.

“Hey, you didn’t copy your brother. You didn’t enter the fray,” he murmurs. I can hear the gratitude in his voice. Ray is allergic to dark elf venom. If I had bitten him, back then, he would have died.

“So, about the case,” I change the subject because I want to begin making it up to him.

“Yes, well, I think that our ancestors, the ancestors of the combined Cosmos, are rising to steal our emotion potions,” Ray says. I nod at that. I was there for the gala. Not only that, but I saw the creatures, who tried to come out of the mirrors.

“We call them citizens of Dimension Beta,” I say.

“Well, they can speak. Just to make a rain check: Shadow creatures in a dust cloud, right?” Ray asks.

“Yes, that’s them,” Ray takes my hand, and leads me out of the teleport room. I don’t speak, as he takes this left turn, or that right turn. This must be a piece building. One on high alert, which means, it is moving as we walk in its halls. He leads me to a room, and, after checking the name plate on it, knocks on it.

Soon, Constantine opens the door. I wave at him, and he waves back. I can see that he doesn’t know what is happening. Which is good. If he had been there, when the citizen of Dimension Beta stole the potion, he might have done something stupid.

“Come on in. Daniel and I were just getting ready for bed,” he says, and slithers to the side, so we can enter.

“Sorry for the late hour. Did you exit this room at any point, after we dropped you off to here?” Ray asks. Constantine shakes his head.

“No. We found the bathroom, and we didn’t want to bother anyone, so we remained in the room,” the Naga says. Ray smiles at him.

“That is good. There was a bit of a... break in,” he says, his eyes glued to Constantine’s face.

“Did you see the thief?” He asks.

“Yes, a shadow creature in a dust cloud, has the shape of a male Naga,” Ray tells him. When Constantine points at the chairs facing the TV, we go, and sit on them. Constantine slithers deeper into the room, exits the living room area, and then comes back with Daniel.

“Oh, hi, Fred,” Daniel says, and I wave at him.

“How did you know it was me?” I ask him. Just so, I will work harder on getting my twin act together. For the next time, I pay him a visit.

“You are calmer than Ferenc,” Daniel says. I smile, and shake my head. Yes, my brother is a good person, when he is not scaring the life out of people, but calm, he is not.

I listen, as Ray repeats the description of the thief. Daniel and Constantine share a look.

“I think that, we need better equipment,” Daniel says. “Fred, do you know what the mirrors are made of? You know, the ones that help us see into Dimension Beta?”

“Glass, mana, the frames are from Caltea wood, if it helps,” I list everything I can remember about the mirrors. Nahndor would have given a more accurate description, but it is late at night, and he is more than likely sleeping.

“What if we make cages out of the same glass?” Constantine suggests?

“Didn’t you say that the Caltea sucks out mana?” Daniel asks him, deep in thought.

“If they are dead, they shouldn’t have mana,” Constantine retorts.

“Yes, but what if they do have it?” Daniel asks. All eyes turn to him.
