Chapter 59:

Another plea to Manacom

Agafia:

I give Rhea a knowing look, to which she responds with a giggle. Nahndor shifts some papers this way and that, but I can see that he is flustered. Just as I am about to exercise my God given right as a senior citizen, and tease him silly, my phone begins to ring. I pull it on hologram mode, and see, much to my surprise, the Prime Minister.

“Agafia, old girl, how long has it been?” Rodger asks. I blink suspiciously at him. Rodger’s mother and I were great friends, and I used to babysit him, from time to time. I know for a fact that he wants something, and is ready to use his boyish charm to get it.

“Cut to the chase, Roddy. What do you want?” I ask him. If he wants to take Nahndor, and add him to that emotion potion case for more than a day, I won’t have it! Nahndor needs to make sure that the new teleport arrives and is installed in Roddy, our piece building.

“Auntie, I need a delivery of, let us say, one million emotion solvents, and at least as many headsets, for next week. I am at Ursula 589,” Rodger tells me. I blink at that.

“I don’t have that kind of money,” at least, that is what I want him to believe. Surely, they can catch the thief, without breaking the bank.

“Oh, I already started the process for a state order for the order,” Rodger says, doing this annoying thing of his where he repeats his words.

I’d ask him to use a synonym, but he would just grin, until I am blinded by his pearly whites. I have always had a weakness for his smiles, ever since he was small, and used to chew out the ears of his Illity plushys.

“Nahndor has an important task ahead of him,” I look at Nahndor, who nods. Ready to back me up in the blink of an eye.

“Ah, yes. The A+ teleport,” Rodger says, and then shifts some papers. “Agafia, I saw Nahndor’s request for the new Nebula Port, and I might have managed to give Manacom a leg up in the waiting list to get it for a reduced price, straight from the manufacturer. Just think, auntie. The guys on Nebula 543 will install it for you, for the money you would have spent just waiting for the teleport.”

“You did this for Manacom?” I ask, my hand going over my heart.

“I know how important the Dimension Theory is. For you, for me, for the entire Cosmos,” ah, Rodger. I know you are buttering me up, but I just can’t help the sigh that escapes it. “Besides, you are my auntie. If I don’t abuse my station to get you favors, then I am not using my position to the fullest.”

“You shouldn’t be abusing your position at all,” I chastise him, but there is no bite behind my words. “Fine, Nahndor will get it done. Is there a fund for the purchase already set up?”

“Yes. Check your email. I already had my secretary send you the details,” Rodger gives me another blinding smile, and then shifts in his seat. “I made friends, auntie.”

Ah, so the business part of this conversation is over, and now I can speak to the same boy, whose behind I used to wash.

“Is that so? They are looking past your occupation; I hope?” I ask him. I know for a fact that it always irks him. That, no matter how easy going he is, people still think of him only as the Prime Minister. Which is unfair. Roddy is a fun kid.

“Dany and Tine are great, even though Tine is a panty pooper,” Rodger chuckles, when I wave a finger at him.

“Is this how I taught you to keep your friends? By calling them names?” I ask. I see someone come behind Rodger, and he sighs, when the Naga whispers in his ear.

“Sorry, auntie. There is no such thing as vacation for me, it seems. Talk to you later,” I wave at him, and he cuts the call. Nahndor is practically gaping at me.

“That is the Prime Minister?” He asks. I smile, and fly up to his face, to flick him on the nose.

“The best one we have had, in the past millennia,” I tell him, letting him know that I will stand behind Roddy, no matter what. “Still, he is a good boy.”

“You should invite him to one of our get-togethers,” Rhea chimes in. “Not one with cameras, but something more private. I have this friend of mine, that has been having troubles dating.”

“Oh, I like the sound of that,” I say, my mind already swimming with plans about hooking up Roddy. Yes, I named our piece building after him. Considering that he was the one to buy it, and gift it to me, I think it was only fitting.

“How about we don’t try to make the guy run for the hills,” Nahndor says, and I turn to mock glare at him. He places his hand under my legs. What a good boy. He must have noticed that my wings are fluttering ever so slower. “And focus on what he wants. I will have to contact all the manufacturers on Ursula 590 for the headsets. They, in turn, will owe us for forwarding such a huge profit to them.”

“Oh, you,” I tap Nahndor’s palm with my foot, twice. “It is devious of you. Making a net of favors? I like it. Maybe we can get our hands on a particle reader next? You know, right after the mana tank?”

“We have to get our hands on the teleport first,” Nahndor says. “Which will take a while. It is good that Constantine and Daniel are not around. They would have been with their hands tied, just researching Naga customs.”

“Nandy, you know that Dany has a lot of catching up to do. As one of the faces of Manacom, he must understand us, so we can get more funding,” Rhea chastises.

Nahndor mumbles a sorry, and places me on my desk chair. That is good. Break time-over! Time to kick some work butt.
