Chapter 7:

Sharing the moment

It is a near miss, but I make it to the Roberts’ house with a bag of apples. I just can’t get the mother and son duo out of my head, though. Normally, a Naga would feel content, with a happiness potion. Why didn’t it work for Noah? I pull out my phone, and I ask Daniel that in a private message. He is not on, so, I’ll need to wait a little. Or, maybe a lot.

I ring the doorbell, and Norah Roberts slithers to the door.

“Tine, it is so good to see you! Beth has been teething, and your humming is the only thing that can calm her down,” she ushers me inside the house, and takes the bag with the apples from my hands. I chuckle at her enthusiasm.

“Where is Charlie, Norah?” I ask. Normally, Charlie is home at this time of the day. He is a businessman, and has an online store that sells to the entire Ursula solar system.

What, you might ask? Well, mood potions, of course. Space travel is a hurdle for even the inhabitants of the Cosmos. Foods and other perishables’ tent to spoil by the time they are delivered.

“He had to go to the storehouse. It seems someone broke into it, and took a happiness potion that was made by a child,” the lady of the house tells me, and I blink.

“Is it the same person as the one from Wendel?” I ask.

“We don’t know. Although, the traces are the same. Or, the lack of traces looks the same,” she tells me. We hear a giggle, and I brighten up.

“Beth, little acorn, I brought you apples,” I call out to the baby. A gurgling sound followed by more giggling is my answer.

Beth is an adorable cherub of a baby. With acorn colored hair and tail, and lovely green eyes. Grass green, with an ever-present twinkle in them.

“I’ll make them into a purée, you go and see her,” Norah disappears in the kitchen, with the bag in her hands, and I go to the play room. I used to visit the Roberts before Beth was born, but ever since the little lady laughed for the first time, I have practically moved in into this house.

Norah welcomes it all, seeing as a free babysitter whose day job is being happy means that I can always turn up in the blink of an eye. I don’t mind. The little Naga lady charges me with such fluffy thoughts, I go back to my house humming to tunes I have made up for her to get her to smile.

Not that it is hard to make Beth smile. All you need to have, is a bit of ingenuity.

“Hey, little acorn,” I say, as she comes into view. She is on the soft pink plush carpet, with the plush image of Illity the snake in her little hands. I lay down so that we are at eye level, and poke her nose.

“Pressing the button of the little acorn, fun times protocol activated,” I say, and she blinks at me. One of her little hands grasps my finger, and moves it to her forehead. “Oh, is that where the button is today?”

She nods, a bit too serious for my liking, and I press her forehead next. Right between her eyes.

“Bip-bob,” I say, but she doesn’t giggle. “What is it, little acorn? Do you want a story?”

She nods, and I scoop her up in my lap, and kiss the crown of her head.

“Ok, I will tell you a recent story. One that I haven’t told anyone up to now. But seeing as the little acorn is my best friend, I think I can’t keep it a secret, anymore,” I say. She nods her little head, and places her little hands over my arms.

“So, here goes. There is this man,” I begin, and am given an:

“Oh,” in return. I chuckle.

“No, not like how your father and mother are, little acorn. He is just a friend,” I say, and Beth just huffs. “No, really.”

She huffs again, and I sigh.

“Ok, moving on. So, he told me that, humans also hunted down the big animals on their planet, but they will bring them back. That got me thinking, what if we brought the Gigantoboa back? So, I signed up for an organization. Do you want to see some of their posters?” I ask, and she giggles. Ah, typical Beth. Tell her that there are pictures to be looked at, and she is the first volunteer.

I pull out my phone, and turn it on hologram mode. Then, I go to the website for Ursula Love of Nature, and navigate to their posters and pamphlets. I pull out the picture of the Gigantoboa, and hear a:

“Wow,” from Beth.

“Yes, the biggest snake in the world. Some would say, in the Cosmos. With the help of many Naga, we are going to see it thrive in Ursula 591,” I say. Her little fingers reach out, and poke the fangs of the hologram. It wavers a little, but my phone is a good model. The hologram doesn’t fade to black.

“Ouchie,” she says, and then pokes the tail tip next. She looks between her plush toy, and the hologram, and then opens her mouth again. “Hiss!”

“Yes, the Gigantoboa made hiss. So does Illity. What does the little acorn do?” I ask, a teasing lilt to my voice.

“Huggies!” She turns around, and hugs me. Her smile is back at full force, and my face brightens up. I don’t ask her why she was in the dumps. I mean, she must be in pain from the teething. Deciding that she needs to be distracted, I begin to pull up the pictures of extinct animals from the Ursula Love for Nature site, and feed her little facts about them.

“And the Scorpion Snake lived in the Desert of Lupia. It was as big as a house,” I say, just as Norah comes into the play room, with a bowl with mushed apples.

“Mama,” Beth reaches out to her mother, and I hold her up, so that Norah can take her into her arms.

“Beth, dear, mama is going shopping. You will have to look after uncle Tine,” Norah winks at me, and I shake my head. A soft smile playing on my lips.

“Uncle Tine good,” Beth says with all the seriousness of a one-year-old. I can’t help it. I break down laughing. The baby’s pout brings tears to my eyes, and soon, my stomach hurts from all the laughter.
