Eyes

When he stepped into the gates of No. 4 High School again, Bian Shengjian suddenly had a sense of a ‘King returning, who looked down on all sentient beings’, that even the steps he took almost became smooth and easy.

“Hey.” Bian Shengjian coughed and immediately adjusted his pace, while looking ahead, he suddenly asked: “Then on the 15th of every month…..What should I do?”

“Hm?” Lu Shen was stunned, and the hand on his side tightened instantly. “I just subdued a resentful spirit not long ago, so it should be quiet for a while.”

“What about after that?” Bian Shengjian looked at him and frowned. “Lu Shen, I came back because I believed in you. Don’t lie to me.”

“I really didn’t lie to you.” Lu Shen smiled helplessly, “It’s just…….”

“Forget it.” Bian Shengjian sighed, and squinted his eyes against the oncoming cold wind. “Actually, there are two reasons why I promised you to come back, one was because of you, and the other was my own idea.”

“What own idea?” Lu Shen asked.

“Those resentful spirits…..were all human beings before they died, right?” Bian Shengjian said, “And it’s because they experienced some bad things that they became like that.”

“Yes.” Lu Shen nodded, as if he had predicted what he would say next.

“Then if anything happens in the future, just call me, I’ll see what I can help you with in that time.” Bian Shengjian looked at him. He was wrapped in a black down jacket from head to toe, and the zipper was pulled up to the tip of his chin. Because he was also wearing a mask, Lu Shen could only see his exposed eyes at the moment.

Resolute, with a faint light shining within.

“……………..good. “Lu Shen suddenly felt his voice was a little hoarse. He quickly cleared it and said it again, “Good. “

“Hm.” Bian Shengjian continued to look ahead. “Actually, I’m not a very kind person… I just find them pitiful.”

“En,” Lu Shen sighed softly, “They’re quite pitiful.”

“I don’t want them to be like me, stuck in the pain of the past and be unable to get out,” Bian Shengjian said after a pause, “Damn, if you look at it this way, can I be regarded as a savior?”

“Ah,” Lu Shen nodded with a smile, “Of course! Of course you are, you even helped them reincarnate.”

“Then what about you?” Bian Shengjian asked suddenly.

“It’s still early for my turn,” Lu Shen paused and quickly skipped the topic, “Let’s talk about it after we have found all the resentful spirits.”

Bian Shengjian responded. He lowered his head to stare at a small piece of dust on his boots, and felt a little depressed for some reason. He never seemed to have considered that Lu Shen would leave him one day.

Leave?

Where are you going? Heaven?

It seems that there was a saying…..what was it, humans and ghosts have different paths?

Lu Shen seemed to see through his emotions, and suddenly grabbed his hand and stuffed it into his pocket. “Third Brother, aren’t you cold?”

“Who’s cold?” Bian Shengjian’s thoughts were suddenly pulled back in an instant. He frowned and pulled his hand back. “Hey! Are you sick!”

“It’s so cold, why don’t you wear gloves?” Lu Shen didn’t let go, pinched Bian Shengjian’s cold wrist and stuffed it deep into his pocket. “Come on, let me keep you warm~”

“You’re crazy!” Bian Shengjian glared at him, but he had to admit that Lu Shen’s hand was very hot, and the inside of his pocket was also very warm. Because of his physique, his hands couldn’t help but become as cold as a girl’s in winter. After struggling a few times, he gave up. Anyhow, everyone wore thick clothes on this day. If two men get closer to each other to keep warm, it shouldn’t be particularly noticeable…..Oh right, other people would surely not notice it either.

After all, it was a little ghost who was warming his hands.

“Hey, let me ask you something.” Bian Shengjian poked Lu Shen, suddenly curious. “For those souls who are going to reincarnation……where will they go? To the Underworld? What does the Underworld look like?”

“Hmm…..this question,” Lu Shen pretended to be in deep thought for a while before he opened his mouth and said, “there is a river there called River of Forgetfulness, the water of which is black…On the river there is also a ferryman who is in charge of the souls of the dead and is responsible for sending those little souls to Meng Po to drink the Mengpo soup.”

(t/n Mengpo soup- is a kind of tea soup in ancient Chinese folklore that can forget all troubles and memories, all love and hatred.)

(t/n Meng Po, a figure in ancient myths and legends, lives beside the Naihe Bridge . She provides Mengpo soup to all the spirits going to reincarnation to erase the memory of ghosts.)

“Little souls?” Bian Shengjian wanted to laugh after hearing this address, “What would happen to the little souls after drinking the soup?”

“Then they can go reincarnate.” Lu Shen said with a smile.

“Ah, now I see.” Bian Shengjian clicked his tongue, “But why do I always feel that you are just teasing me?”

“I’m really not teasing you,” Lu Shen tilted his head and thought for a while, then added, “But you know, Meng Po was sometimes a man.”

“A man??” Bian Shengjian was so shocked that he almost choked on his saliva. “Is the relationship in your house really messed up?”

“Sigh, there’s no way,” Lu Shen shrugged, “It’s not easy for them, it’s fine to work in the underworld without wages, but the main point is that they can’t even rest, it’s worse than livestock.”

“Really miserable.” Bian Shengjian clicked his tongue twice, “It’s better to be a human being.”

“……Yes.” Lu Shen paused, and then said.

“Go, go, go. Go in first, it’s freezing outside.” Bian Shengjian saw that the long road from the school gate to the teaching building had come to an end. With great difficulty, he pulled Lu Shen, raised his head and ran into the room. A burst of heat blew towards his face that made his bones almost crisp, greeted him immediately.

 “Ah…comfortable!”

At this moment, Lu Shen turned his head and glanced at him. Bian Shengjian, who was squinting his eyes and enjoying the baptism of the heating, paused and looked over suspiciously.

“What?”

“Nothing.” Lu Shen turned his head back and tried his best to hold back a smile on the corner of his mouth. “Just felt that your name sounds nice.”

“My name…….what about my name?” Bian Shengjian quickly recalled, and when he realized what Lu Shen was referring to, his whole body froze. Shocked, he jumped on the spot. “Damn it! Lu Shen, you’re fucking dead!”

“Don’t, don’t come here,” Lu Shen yelled a series of words, and ran up the stairs first. “Come and chase me.”

“Just you wait!” Bian Shengjian roared in a low voice, and ran after him, planning to catch the bastard, so he could place his unwarmed hand into his neck to let him feel what his cold as ice palm felt like. But just as he turned around the stairs, he almost bumped into a person head-on, forcing him to take two steps back and almost tripping.

“…Damn, Who!”

“Shengjian?” A familiar voice sounded in front of him. Old Tan was looking at him apologetically with a folder in his arms. “I’m sorry, this teacher was leaving in a hurry. Are you okay?”

“No worries, no worries,” Bian Shengjian quickly waved his hand. “I’m sorry, Mr. Cai, it was just a slip of the tongue.”

“It’s okay.” Old Tan adjusted his glasses, looked him over quickly and then smiled. “Shengjian, I haven’t seen you for a few days, you seem to be much more refreshed?”

“Haha, is that so?” Bian Shengjian forced a dry laugh twice.

“Okay, since you’re back, let’s settle down and study hard.” Old Tan said and patted him on the shoulder in relief, and said with a smile. “Your father called me yesterday, saying that you have changed a lot since you came home this time, and thought that I must have taught you well.”

“Of course, you have taught well.” Bian Shengjian replied immediately, “But I have to go back to class, Mr. Cai.”

“All right, go on.” Old Tan smiled and patted him on the shoulder again, not forgetting to say, “By the way, Shengjian, don’t forget to control your temper, otherwise in class………………..”

“I know. I will definitely pay attention to it in the future.” Bian Shengjian nodded repeatedly, and hurriedly took a few steps up the stairs, for fear that Old Tan would let him stay and lecture him about love education when it comes to his mind.

When Bian Shengjian returned to the class, he saw that there were a few unoccupied desks and chairs in the originally barely filled class, that was to say, in just the few days that he left home, some people had left the class again.

But because of the small number of people, when Bian Shengjian suddenly appeared at the back door of the classroom, the scene was comparable to the appearance of characters in anime, with wonderful flashing special effects and BGM.

“Brother Jian!!” Bian Shengjian suddenly heard someone shout.

“Yes, I’m here.” Bian Shengjian suddenly felt a headache, and when Zhou Li rushed towards him, he quickly dodged to the side and patted him on the back perfunctorily. “Stop shouting, those who don’t know would think I was dead.”

“Fuck, didn’t you transfer school? Why did you come back again!” Zhou Li rubbed his nose, and the tip of it was a little red. “Or…you just came back to pack your luggage?”

“Not transferring.” Bian Shengjian sighed.

“Really?” Zhou Li put his arms around his shoulders. “Damn, don’t lie to me, are you really not going to transfer?”

“I’m really not going to anymore,” Bian Shengjian clicked his tongue, “If I lied to you, I’ll remain single until graduation.”

“Good, good!” Zhou Li nodded again and again, his eyes squinted with joy, “Brother Jian, don’t you know that our class has lost several people these days when you’re not here….”

“I know, I’ve noticed.” Bian Shengjian patted him on the shoulder, “It’s okay, even if they have left, don’t you still have me by your side?”

“Ah! You said it.” Zhou Li was very moved and hugged his shoulder again., “Damn it, I love you so much.”

“What love, I don’t need….” Bian Shengjian frowned and was about to push him away, when he suddenly noticed someone staring at them from the corner of his eye.

Damn, why was he staring? Bian Shengjian turned around and glared at Lu Shen.

Lu Shen sat obliquely on the seat, looking at him with his chin in his hand, and only remained silent. After meeting Bian Shengjian’s eyes, he moved slightly, raised his eyebrows at him, and mouthed something to him.

Bian Shengjian didn’t understand what he mouthed over to him, but he always felt that whenever he was with Zhou Li, Lu Shen would always show such profound eyes, and sometimes Bian Shengjian could even read two small flames jumping up from those two eyes.

What, jealousy?

Bian Shengjian quickly looked away.

……Eat your bloody vinegar! What kind of vinegar are you eating?

“By the way, Brother Jian,” Zhou Li gave Bian Shengjian a firm hug before letting go. Fortunately, it’s almost the end of the period, otherwise the teacher would have to kick him out of their earth-shattering mess. “Do you know that next week is the school sports meeting?”

“School sports meeting?” Bian Shengjian glanced at him, and suddenly a thought came to his mind,’See! The athletes are walking towards our rostrum with their heads held high and bright smiles on their faces’, these lines were already engraved in his DNA before, he paused before continuing, “I don’t know, isn’t it none of my business?”

“Of course it’s your business!” Zhou Li said immediately, “This is about the honor of our class!”

“Yes, yes, yes,” Bian Shengjian glanced at the whole class, and said as cooperatively as possible. “The burden of carrying the honor of our class is in your hands.”

“How can I alone be enough?” Zhou Li snorted, looked at him seriously and said, “Brother Jian, do you plan to not participate in any events?”

“That’s exactly what I mean.” Bian Shengjian nodded.

“That’s not good!” Zhou Li shouted immediately, looking at him with a heartbroken and fierce expression. “Brother Jian, let me tell you, if you don’t participate in two more events on behalf of our class this time, I can only be sorry for your terrifying physical strength! Do you know the horror? You’re the kind that others can’t even catch up with! Are you still thinking about wasting it like this?”

“It’s okay, after all, I’m a relatively low-key person,” Bian Shengjian said, “I usually don’t use my physical strength to pretend to be aggressive until special occasions.”

“No! This time I’m forcing you to pretend!” Zhou Li stared at him for a while before whispering, “Anyway, I’ve already signed you up…”

“What did you say?” Bian Shengjian was so startled that he almost choked, and he held back so as not to punch this guy in the face on the spot. “Zhou Li, do I have to fucking thank you for this?”

“You don’t need to thank me. After all, it is to win the glory for the class.” Zhou Li said with a righteous face, “If you want to thank me, please call me Lei…”

“Lei, your uncle!” Bian Shengjian punched him on the shoulder. Fortunately, Zhou Li already expected it therefore he didn’t suffer any substantial damage. “What did you sign me up for?”

“In fact, it’s nothing really.” Zhou Li hurriedly hid back and said with a smile, “I just signed you up for 1500, basketball and relay.”

“…Damn.” Bian Shengjian stared at him for a long time in a very speechless manner, “You’re really fucking awesome.”

“It’s okay! I also signed up for basketball and relay.” Zhou Li patted his chest and vowed. “We will advance and retreat together.”

“Then why don’t you also sign up for 1500 yourself?” Bian Shengjian gritted his teeth and said.

“No good, isn’t it because big boys can only sign up for 1500…..moreover your physical strength is much better than mine.” Zhou Li smiled, “But the most important thing is not these two. The most important one is basketball!”

“Hm? Why?” Bian Shengjian looked at him impatiently.

“Brother Jian, how is your play?” Zhou Li asked seriously.

“Not bad.” Bian Shengjian reluctantly responded, “Should be better than you.”

“Oh, you’re not kidding?” Zhou Li raised his eyebrows, “That’s good. Let’s go down and have a game later, I’ll try your strength.”

“Who the hell plays basketball in winter?” Bian Shengjian was speechless.

“Stupid, our school has an indoor basketball court!” Zhou Li looked at him with a look of ‘Are you stupid?’.

“Okay, let’s also make a bet!”

“You think I’ll follow whatever you say?” Bian Shengjian tucked his arms and looked at him, “Do you think I’m some kind of little pet that can be ordered around?”

“Hey,” Zhou Li sighed suddenly, “Brother Jian, you don’t know, I just wanted to give our class a good kick of motivation by asking you to play with me.”

“What motivation?” Bian Shengjian looked at him.

“Just last year, when our class was playing against Class Six next door!” Zhou Li became a little excited, “Damn, at that time someone from their class hit our class’ forward, and made him break a bone on the spot! As a result he was carried down to be treated.”

“I see,” Bian Shengjian frowned, “But isn’t it normal to get injured during a game?”

“Normal, what nonsense!” Zhou Li yelled, “This guy deliberately cheated! He hit him directly to the pole at that time! Fortunately, he didn’t get a concussion.”

“What a dog,” Bian Shengjian hated this kind of disgusting people in a game the most, and said after a pause, “So you want to……”

“Yes!” Zhou Li waved his hand carelessly. “I just thought that if we played against their class again this year, as long as brother Jian is there, brother Jian will surely blow that person up.”

“I didn’t know I was that powerful?” Bian Shengjian twitched the corners of his mouth.

“Tsk, in short, you don’t need to worry about anything else, just play well.” Zhou Li shouted again. “Blow them up when the time comes!”

“Hey!” Bian Shengjian was taken aback by his voice, and could only reply helplessly after a long time: “…..right, blow them up.”
