Chapter 74: Each one

When Madam Lin thought of her beloved son, that was carrying her lifelong wishes and aspirations on his shoulders, had to lower his status by conducting a mourning ceremony for a mere commoner, it was like a stabbing a knife into her chest, and she couldn’t bear to listen any further.

She vehemently hit the edge of the bed, her actions resembled those calculative housewives who were cheated of a few silver pieces, and she screamed at Li Jun. “I’m not drinking it! Go and get your brother back! Tell him I’m close to dying and I want him to come back to look after me in my sickness!”

How was that possible?

The Pei family was the guarantor for this and the Li family had also given their word. Moreover, the whole Lin’an city was watching their every move, so how could his brother break his promise?

Li Jun’s mouth was filled with bitterness. He coaxed his mother in a low voice. “Mother, drink this medicine first. After you have finished, I’ll go find my brother!”

“No! You have to go now!” Madam Lin had already been tricked and didn’t trust Li Jun’s words, “I will only drink the medicine after you get your brother back.”

The two were stuck at an impasse.

Madam Lin yelled at Li Jun for his lack of filial piety and demanded that Li Jun go and get Li Duan back.

Li Jun lowered his head and simply pretended not to have heard her.

Madam Lin’s voice was heard from the main room of the Li family as she broke down into tears and wailed.

Yu Tang stood in front of the large bookcase in the family study, carefully examining the Pine Creek Fishing Hidden Painting that was sprawled out on the desk.

Her original plan was to send this painting to the Li family, thereby extricating their Yu family from this matter entirely.

However now she doesn’t want to!

The Li family killed Wei Xiaoshan and wanted to leave unscathed? Hmph, that was impossible!

Yu Tang sneered.

The hatred of her two lifetimes had culminated in this moment.

If she can’t take revenge for this, then what’s the point of being a human!

The Li family spent so much time, effort and money in order to secure this painting. Sooner or later, they will still try to find a way to take the painting back. Although she wanted to take revenge on the Li family, but it was based on the prerequisite that it would not involve the Yu family. Therefore, the best way was the same as before, the painting must be “sent” to the Li family, but whether it’s the original, who knows?

But now she’s stuck in a quandary.

When they first restored the painting, she didn’t intend to amend the original content hidden in the painting. Therefore, if she wished to do so now, the painting had to be redone. Not many people know of such techniques, and the matter also required secrecy, so it wasn’t easy to find a suitable person. Furthermore, Master Qian had already left Hangzhou City. What originally was the simplest way had now turned out to be the hardest.

She had to think of another plan!

Yu Tang stayed in the study for several days mulling over this. It was only until the arrival of Mrs. Wei who came to thank Yu Tang for Wei Xiaoshan’s matter, did she put this issue aside for the time being and went to converse with Mrs. Wei.

“I heard about Xiaoshan’s matter from my husband and Xiaochuan.” Mrs. Wei grabbed Yutang’s hand in gratitude, “If it wasn’t for you, my family’s Xiaoshan would have died in vain. I had only given birth to sons, and thus dearly love to have a daughter. If you are agreeable, you can treat me as your elder in the family and visit me in the countryside when you are idle.” After speaking, her eyes welled up with emotion and it seemed as though tears would fall at any moment.

Yu Tang always felt somewhat guilty towards Wei Xiaoshan, thus, upon hearing her words, she hurriedly looked towards Madam Chen.

Whenever Madam Chen thought about this, she always felt as if fate destined that no matter what happens both their families seem to be tied together. As her beloved daughter was so precious to her, she was reluctant for her daughter to call anyone “godfather” or “godmother”. However, upon seeing Mrs. Wei’s tears, she couldn’t help but get emotional too. She gave a slight nod towards her daughter and said, “Mrs. Wei, I’ve always wanted to speak to you regarding this. Just that there were too many things happening this few days and I didn’t have the time. If you don’t mind, let’s become god sisters, and my daughter will recognize you as her god-aunt.”

Mrs. Wei didn’t have high hopes that she would be acknowledged as YuTang’s godmother, so when Madam Chen suggested this, she agreed readily.

Both of them made a formal recognition of kinship, Yu Tang changed her address of Mrs. Wei as ‘God-aunt’. After the formalities, Mrs Wei gave Yu Tang some allowance and Madam Chen also prepared some allowance for the Wei Family’s boys. It was a lively day for both families.

Only Master Wei quietly grumbled to Mrs. Wei. “What’s the point of becoming godparents? In a few years’ time we might be able to get Ah-tang to marry into our family!”

Mrs. Wei snorted at Master Wei and said, “As if I don’t know what you have in mind. Xiaochuan is too young! What if they can’t get along? Don’t let this friendship turn sour, just listen to me on this.”

Master Wei kept silence and discussed with Mrs. Wei about Li Jun’s reparation to the Yu family instead. “He said he would come to the house tomorrow, should we go and support the Yu family?”

Since their family had many sons, so at least there would be more people on the Yu Family’s side.

“Of course we should!” Mrs. Wei said immediately, “Why did we want to be related to the Yu family in the first place? It was because Master Yu is a practical person and we can’t let them down. If the Li family came to make amends and instead made things worse, we are able to dispel the rumours on the spot, and prevent Ah-tang’s reputation from being ruined even after she has done so much for us.”

The fact that she was kidnapped due to a failed marriage was not a good thing, and Mrs. Wei was afraid that the Li family would cause trouble, and it was not without cause.

Master Wei felt that Mrs. Wei had a point.

The next day, Master Wei took all his sons along with him to the Yu family.

Li Duan had already finished performing the funeral ceremony for Wei Xiaoshan. In Lin’an, there were many differing opinions on this, but majority of them felt that Li Duan was the most promising son in the Li family. Not only was he open-minded, but he was also a straightforward and responsible person who loyally performed the rituals for the Wei family to atone for the wrongdoings of his family’s servants.

Instead of hurting his reputation, it rose.

As soon as Yu Tang heard this, she knew that someone in the Li family was steering the public’s opinion.

This was the same sort of manipulation the Li family did in her previous life.

When Li Jun came to the Yu family to apologize, Yu Tang was on guard against the Li family and had hired a few helpers through the Qu brothers to hang around so that if anyone said anything damaging to the Yu family, they would be able to defend themselves. However, who knew that the Wei brothers would come along as well. When all of them stood tall at the entrance of the Yu family’s residence, few people dared to gossip about them. Only Li Jun, with a reddened face, kowtowed three times to Yu Wen at the entrance of the Yu family’s gate, in apology.

As Yu Wen always had a good impression of Li Jun, he could not bear to let Li Jun take the blame for the Li family’s actions, especially since it had nothing to do with Li Jun. After Li Jun had kowtowed three times, he helped him up and offered him a few words of advice, such as “conduct yourself properly in the future”, and invited him back to the house to have tea. Not only did he not make things difficult for him, but he also provided a way out for him.

Li Jun was taken aback by his kindness as he dazedly followed Yu Wen into the house.

The people of Lin’an City felt that Yu family was really magnanimous and kind-hearted.

After drinking tea and making some small talk, he sent Li Jun out.

Li Jun nervously said his goodbyes and left the gate, but was called to stop by Yu Tang

She asked, “Do you still ride horses nowadays?”

Li Jun looked at her beautiful and delicate face and his heart twitched in pain. He said with a bitter smile, “I have been busy these few days, so I don’t have time to ride horses.”

That’s a relief.

Yu Tang replied “Then you should take this time to recuperate and rest well at home. After such an incident, there will inevitably be some difficulties.”

Li Jun nodded, but in his heart he thought, “Instead of showing your concern for me like this and rubbing salt into my wounds, it would be better if you would just flat out ignore me in anger so that my feelings for you would die out.”
