Passive and active abilities

When a person levels-up, they are either granted a new ability or are able to freely choose from a specific listing of choices available to them.

The most common of these choices are abilities titled active or passive abilities.

Active abilities are skills that a user must activate, as their name implies, in order to use them. Generally, this comes at a cost, typically soul-points, as the ability is fired off. A classic example of an active ability is the wizard class’ fireball spell, which, for the cost of activation, creates a highly volatile ball of fire that the caster may lob towards a target.

Passive abilities, on the other hand, are always active abilities that either grant a boon of some sort or sit waiting for a trigger to activate them.

An example of a passive ability is a Dryad’s ‘regeneration’ ability, which is active from the earliest stages of their life and constantly regenerates hurt and wounded parts of their body, without any further intervention such as bandaging or medicine.

All classes offer a wide variety of both active and passive abilities.

~ The ways people are, by Silvatar Edumando

~ [Isaiah] ~

Isaiah hovers on the core of the island, near the tower. Beige and Magenta are at its side. The two of them keep ‘accidentally’ bumping into one another as they seem to be undergoing some form of playful sibling squabble. It rests with its sword in the soil and looks towards the tower. It truly is a grand construction, something worthy of admiration. Crystal and everyone else had worked so hard on this.

However, now they come into a time of danger once more. The church is long overdue and every day that comes to pass makes it worried somewhat more about the safety of the tower. The island currently is ‘anchored’ to the ground via a few mechanisms, such as the ladder, the chain, a rope and some other things. This allows the dungeon territory to count as accessible, thereby following the cosmic rules of the world, but if a grand siege is to take place, then the encroaching force doesn’t even need to besiege the tower. They can just destroy the entrances to the island, and the whole thing will fall apart. The island’s anchoring to the world below is its core, fundamental weakness.

Thankfully, it has taken some precautionary measures, and with a little foresight, this problem will now be averted.

“Are Seide and her goblins ready?” asks Isaiah.

“They a-” starts Beige.

“- THEY ARE!” replies Magenta, butting in. Beige pushes her back again.

Isaiah nods, opening its massive wings out wide, its hands clenching the hilt of the sword that is plunged into the soil.

(Isaiah) has used: [Grand Wonder]

The island shakes, with a quake rumbling through the ground.

~ [Murjin] ~
Dwarf, Male, Merchant
Location: A Small Shop, Down at the Base of the Tower

Murjin counts his money, more than pleased with what his life has been developing into. This little island is a real gold mine. Sure, there’s some drama now and then, but as a merchant, drama is the spice that he profits from the most. He thought he’d need to be here for a few years before he made the money to retire, but at this rate, he’ll be able to pack up and go before the year is over.

People wander in and out of his business. He doesn’t even have to work the counter anymore. He’s hired some elf to do that for him. He just sits back and rakes in the money, as is the merchant way.

— The windows rattle, and then the glass lining the shelves starts too as a quake rumbles through the world.

Wares fall off of the shelves, bottles shattering as they strike the floor. People let out confused cries outside and then, just as it came, the quake simply stops a moment later.

Murjin gathers himself and looks around at the mess. “Clean this up,” he says to his worker, who runs off to grab a broom as he walks outside to look out at the little town.

People have gathered in a circle around the quest-giving statue in the center of the plaza that has been formed. He leans over from his somewhat raised staircase and looks. There, in their midst, a hole has opened in the ground, just before the proclaiming statue. A winding, spiral staircase leads downward, down through the body of the island.

New Area
~ [Dungeon] ~
The World-Connecting Sub-Tower
Floors -100

Created by magical energies of the spirit-world. A secondary tower spans the distance between the island and the crater below the island. In order to reach the top of the island, the sub-tower must first be ascended.

~ [Seide] ~
Dryad, Female, Wood-mother
Location: The Dark Crater Below the Island

Seide stands on the stone bridge that spans out across the water-filled crater that looms in the shadow below the island. Herself and hundreds of goblins stand there on the construction, lined with shadow-thriving trees and ivy, as their eyes stare in wonder at the thing that has shot out of the bubbling murk below like a great serpent rising from the sea. A tower rises out of the water, a downpour of lake-water crashing off of itself as it firmly connects to the island above, as if it were a titanic pillar holding the world aloft.

Her goblins shriek in fear and terror, despite knowing what was to come. But this is a sight far beyond the scope of what any goblin might normally witness in its life, the emergence of such a thing. She herself can only stand there in awe as well, wondering what great power the creature known as Isaiah must wield, in order to create something as this on a whim.

“Wood-mother,” asks a fearful voice from the side, tugging on her robe. “What is this?” asks the goblin.

— The tower releases a heavy thudding crash, as it finally comes to a stop and the last of the water falls off of its body, crashing back down into the lake below. Waves crash around the bridge.

She looks back towards the large gate that has appeared before them, the golden aura beckoning them inside. She reaches down and takes the goblin’s hand, before walking towards the sub-tower.

“Our new home,” she explains, walking into the mist, the rest of the goblin tribe following her inside.

~ [Crusader Legionnaire Nostrae] ~
Human, Female, (Priest + Warlock Advanced-Class) - Inquisitor
Location: Below the Island to the West

Nostrae looks down at her carefully laid out stacks of paper — dozens of sheets covered in hand-drawn sketches and plans laying out an intricate plan for her to reach the island after her failed attempt at using the ladder. She has been carefully planning these tactics and ideas.

Her eyes then rise back up, staring across the shadowy lake beneath the flying island, towards the massive tower that has come from nowhere and the bridge that spans the lake to reach it.

She looks down at her plans with tired eyes that she has spent weeks in the forest scouting out to craft.

— Letting out a frustrated, more than just annoyed, scream, she grabs everything in a fit of rage and throws it into the water.

~ [Isaiah] ~

“There,” it says. “This new sub-tower should keep us safe,” explains Isaiah. “The humans will not be able to besiege a construction of the spirit-world.” It looks at Beige and Magenta. “Fly along beneath the island. Make sure everything is secure and safe.”

“Oka-” says Magenta.

Beige pushes her out of the way. “- Okay!” affirms the uthra, quickly flying off. Magenta flies after her in annoyance.

Isaiah watches them go and then stares towards the bedazzled adventurers of the island, but not just them. Thousands of people have been making their way here from the city nearby and from every city in the world. They need a way to reach the island too; it isn’t just a defensive measure.

It would be in poor spirits to beckon the world’s pilgrims here and then not offer them a way up, after all.

~ [Taishi-shi] ~
Vildt(Rabbit), Male, Classless
Location: The Far Off Eastern Continent

Taishi-shi watches in wonder as the crystalline messenger of Isaiah shoots around like a dancing bird. He tries to help, but he is hardly able to keep up with the presence. White, artistically hewn bricks, stemming from a source it can’t even begin to identify, materialize as if out of nowhere. Wood, cut and straightened from firm, exotic trees, is set upright into strong beams.

The building changes and morphs, almost as if it were an organic lifeform growing before his eyes, but not just his.

The others have stopped their games on the field and watch in awe together with him as the building changes, growing and becoming a whole, beautiful structure the likes of which hasn’t been seen by their eyes since before the great destruction and poverty that have spanned the continent.

“Taishi-shi,” asks the boy next to him. “What is it?” he whispers.

Taishi-shi looks at him and then back at the church that rises out of nothing more than the glory of what can only be the last god in the world.

“Isaiah,” says Taishi-shi. “I told you before,” he explains, looking at the group of other children his own age, give or take a few years in either direction. “Its name is Isaiah,” he says, clasping his hands together as a bell-tower rises out of the top of the building. “And it is here to save us.”

“Isaiah,” mutters a dozen voices around it, one after the other, as they try to let the name roll across their tongues, as if unsure of how it would feel.

— The bell atop the church rings, heralding the finished construction of the very first church of Isaiah.
