Chapter 43

The human body is made of cells, and every cell has organelles called the mitochondria. They are the powerhouses of the cell, providing us with energy. On Earth, in the absence of magical energy, they can only generate ATP and heat as byproducts. However, in this world, the mitochondria can also make mana. My health care AI, Emerald, has confirmed this.

And that leads to mana overload. This is a condition where excessive mana generation occurs, most likely due to an overactivity of the mitochondria. Heat is one thing, but there’s also the overproduction of reactive oxygen species that can wreak havoc and shut down the whole system. If not treated, Lumi will die very soon.

“Jack, we must help her!” Sophia exclaims. “You know about the disease, is there any way you can treat it?”

However, simply knowing doesn’t mean that I can cure it easily.

“Honestly, I don’t know if I can…” I mutter.

The whole etiology earlier is just a hypothesis based on my observation and limited knowledge. It lacks the confirmation via experimental designs. Even with the help of two advanced AIs, Ruby and Emerald, curing an illness I'm encountering for the first time is still too much. Like any cure or treatment, developing one takes a lot of time and effort. Moreover, my understanding of magical energy and mana theory is still cursory, barely scratching the surface. I have yet to know what caused her mitochondria to be in such a hyper state. Is it really cancer or is it something else? If so, is it the cancer of the brain? Or the liver? Or the heart?

Thus, even if I want to, can I really save this little girl?

'Please, Jack, please save my sister!' Lyon is now grabbing my clothes, begging me with tears in his eyes. Suddenly, he falls to his knees before me. 'Please help, I will do anything, please!'

I immediately react, trying to help him to his feet, but as I look into his eyes, I freeze.

Those eyes, filled with desperation and hope, hit me like a truck.

Because I now see myself in him. Isn’t Lyon just like me? Am I looking at my younger self right now? When Anna was taken away, I was devastated. My world was filled with despair and pain. Every minute, every second, every moment that I existed, I felt that pain, a pain worse than a million knives stabbing into my heart.

And now, is this little guy going to experience the same agony as mine?

No… I cannot bear watching another brother lose his sister.

I must prevent that! I have to do everything in my power to help cure Lumi!

“If you trust me, there’s something I would like to try,” I say.

Upon hearing this, the boy's expression brightens, and his eyes light up with hope.

“Thank you! Thank you very much!” he sobs and smiles.

Nearby, Sophia’s eyes are also welling up with tears.

“Alright, let’s find your father first, because I need the Etherbloom,” I say. “But first, Sophia and Lyon, do you have any items that can hold a powerful enchantment?”

“Powerful.. Enchantment?” Lyon echoes, clearly puzzled. Seems like he doesn’t know what an enchantment is.

Sophia, however, reaches into her pouch and pulls out something. “Here, will this do?” she asks, extending her hand.

“Wait! This is…”

As her palm opens, I instantly recognize the object. It's the Phoenix Ring! The precious Phoenix Tear crystal is gone, but the ring's base is still intact!

“This is capable enough.” I nod. “But… it’s your mother’s memento, are you sure about this? The enchantment I’m about to apply is for mana absorption. It will absorb Lumi’s generated mana. However, Sophia, when the ring reaches its limit, it will break.”

“That’s fine,” Sophia places the ring onto my hand without any hesitation. “It’s just a ring, Lumi’s life is more precious.”

“Alright.”

With the ring in my hand, I immediately begin the enchantment. And of course, ten minutes later, the enchantment succeeds.

As the ring is placed onto Lumi’s finger, it begins to work. The room grows cooler as mana is absorbed.

“That will buy us some time,” I say. “Now, let’s go find Curtis.”

“Please, let me come with you,” Lyon requests. “With my Lupical Sense, we can find him!”

“Of course! Then, Sophia, you stay and watch over Lumi. Lyon and I will go.”

“Yes! Leave it to me!” Sophia nods.

“Alright,” Lyon says. “Metamorphosis!”

In an instant, his body morphs into a small white wolf. In this form, Lyon will be able to use his Lupical Sense to track down his father by scent. Me and him sprint out of the house, heading towards the city center, where the Auction House is located.
