The next day, Prince Yinuo sent a letter of apology to the Emperor of the Great Qin for losing his head to alcohol and harassing the prince of Nanping.

Since Xia Yujin was beautiful and had been harassed more than a couple of times by people who didn’t know the truth of who he was while he was out fooling around, the Emperor didn’t bother to take it seriously as long as he wasn’t truly seized and forced upon. He briefly and flippantly absolved the prince of Eastern Xia, then went to see his Noble Consort Song and told her the latest jokes about his nephew.

Prince Yinuo, having prepared gifts of the best furs and gems, personally went to the prince of Nanping’s mansion to apologize.

Xia Yujin’s hatred of him was so deep that he didn’t have any tea prepared for him, and had him wait in the reception pavilion for more than a shichen before coming out to see him, yawning. Then he crossed his legs and, not looking at the prince, drank tea by himself.

“What brings Your Royal Highness here to honor us by your presence?”

Prince Yinuo didn’t mind the slights against him. Lowering himself, he profusely apologized with an embarrassed smile on his face, regardless of Xia Yujin’s ridicule and mockery. The maids standing on the side couldn’t bear the sight of it and entered the inner room to plead Ye Zhao to come out and curb the prince’s behavior.

Having received the message, Ye Zhao rushed out of her training room to stop Xia Yujin, who was getting more and more excessive, asked the maids to serve tea, and greeted Prince Yinuo.

“Drunken words cannot be held onto,” she said, “and you didn’t intend to lose control, Your Royal Highness. My husband has a straightforward nature, and his temper comes and goes quickly. So let bygones be bygones and let’s all forget about it.”

The prince of Eastern Xia was one rank higher than a nephew of the Emperor; moreover, he was a foreign envoy. Xia Yujin knew that it was no good trying to get back at him in public, and that the other man had borne his humiliation for a long time already without speaking up. Losing interest and calming down, he mumbled, “Is it instinctive for military leaders to get drunk and molest people?”

“It is,” Ye Zhao replied.

Prince Yinuo choked slightly and pensively glanced at Ye Zhao.

Ye Zhao’s face did not change, but she proudly stood upright.

“The Eastern Xia delegation will return home tomorrow at dawn,” Prince Yinuo said, handing over his gifts.

“At last?” Xia Yujin replied, delighted. “I will not send you away.”

“Mhm,” nodded Prince Yinuo. “You are very busy, Your Highness. No need to send us off. But I offended a friend yesterday, and I deeply regret it. Tonight, I want to invite you and your wife to share a meal with me at Taihui restaurant.[1] I want to apologize to His Highness in front of everyone and clear up the misunderstanding.”

“Then who knows if you’ll get drunk…” muttered Xia Yujin.

Ye Zhao discreetly kicked him to get him to accept.

“I will not drink too much,” promised Prince Yinuo.

Xia Yujin expected that the rumors would be difficult to erase for the next few months. Seeing that the other party was willing to take the initiative in apologizing, clearing up the misunderstanding, and saving him some humiliation, he felt a little moved.

Taihui Restaurant was on the bank of the Qin River, a place Xia Yujin often visited when he went out. He and the owner knew each other very well, and Ye Zhao would be close by his side. Thus unafraid of whatever the prince would be up to under the influence of wine, he finally agreed.

Delighted, Prince Yinuo took his leave and left.

“Beware of suspicious folk bearing gifts — they are sure to be ill-intentioned,” Xia Yujin said disdainfully once he left.

Ye Zhao stared at the door and affirmed, “He once endured for five years, pleasing and assuaging the vigilance of the second queen of Eastern Xia, then destroyed her whole family. This man keeps his emotions in check. And now he shows you kindness. He has other intentions, that’s for sure.”

Xia Yujin’s lips turned stiff. “Do you think he wants to destroy my whole family?”

“Hard to tell.”

“The Emperor’s in my family…”

“It could be he doesn’t want to cause trouble,” Ye Zhao said after a moment of silence.

“Who knows what he’s pretending to be, ruthless as he is. Let’s talk about it in five years,” Xia Yujin said. “What’s the result of our murder investigation?”

Ye Zhao pulled out a piece of paper from her lapels and handed it out to him. “The little beggar said the murderer has a scar under his eye. Assistant Prefect Niu thinks he could be a foreigner living in the capital, so he had an artist draw a portrait. He wants to put up posters all over the city to search for the suspect.”

Triangular eyes, wide nostrils, large mouth, a full beard, a fierce expression.

After looking at it for a while, Xia Yujin laughed and commented, “Tsk… That’s a really bad artist, he drew that guy barely like a person and more like a ghost…”

Ye Zhao declined to comment.

That night, Taihui Restaurant was filled with the noise from its patrons, the wine was overflowing, the singing and dancing raising spirits high. Prince Yinuo booked the private room with the best view, ordered the best food and drinks, and also invited the people who’d accompanied him: Sir Xie from the Secretariat-Chancellery and Secretary-General Niu.

Ye Zhao was a punctual person. She dragged Xia Yujin after her, and neither of them were late. But Prince Yinuo still wasn’t there after they’d taken their seats, and after a quarter of a shichen the interpreter to the Eastern Xia delegation ran over, breathless, to say that Prince Yinuo was being delayed and would be half a shichen late, and may they excuse him and accept this Eastern Xia wine. He also earnestly invited them to forgo formality and start eating and drinking as much as they wished.

Xia Yujin wasn’t happy but, having no alternative, he leaned on the railing of the window, boredly looking at the pleasure boats on the Qin River, the starry sky, and the lights, brighter than daylight. An indistinct thread of music reached his ears. Wherever he looked, he saw barbarians, better-looking than the old men at their table, so he warned his wife not to drink too much, and left them all to her to deal with.

Suddenly, he saw a sneaky and tall figure standing under the willow tree across the way, seemingly waiting for someone. When that man turned around under the light of the lantern hanging from the willow tree, he revealed a sturdy figure, clear triangular eyes and red and wide nostrils set on a fierce and cruel face, as well as a long scar under the corner of his eye. He was so ugly that Xia Yujin jumped back in fright, and couldn’t help inwardly sighing. This man, so ugly he only looked partly like a man and mostly like a ghost, was exceedingly familiar.

Xia Yujin looked at him for a long time, pulled out the portrait of the murderer from the front of his clothes, and loudly exclaimed, “This artist’s drawing is uniquely good and true to life.”

Prince Yinuo, who had just come through the door, curiously asked, “What is true to life?”

“Ah-Zhao!” Xia Yujin yelled, pointing out at the murder suspect downstairs, “go grab him!”

“Huh?” Ye Zhao quickly dropped her half-eaten drumstick, ran over, and glanced at the portrait. “We really searched high and low without seeing a trace of him, and now we can get him so easily,” she sighed.

She vaulted over the railing, pulling out a soft sword from her waist, and slashed at the murderer. The sword whistled through the air, impossible to block. The attack scared the murder suspect so much that he did not dare keep his secret tricks to himself, and pulled out a short dagger from his sleeve to hold her back.

Seeing the weapon, Ye Zhao’s determination grew even stronger, and she became even more brutal.

Although the suspect was a master killer, this was his unlucky day, his one mistake too many. He had encountered the master of all masterful killers. His dagger countered the sword for a dozen moves before it broke in two, exposing his weakness and his defeat. Ye Zhao took advantage of her victory to press on.

With a single punch, the suspect experienced life as an old man ahead of schedule, unable to speak or chew.

With one kick, the suspect disappointed his parents, wife, and children, and was suddenly qualified to work inside the Palace.[2]

With another punch and kick, he started to cry for his mom and beg for mercy.

Remembering the exhaustion of running about for days, Xia Yujin suffering humiliation and harassment, violence rose in her heart. She kicked him over a hundred feet away, then walked up to him, picked him up, and kicked him down again. In a voice that no one could hear, she cursed and told him, “So you think you can frame my husband? Do you want to fucking die?”

The murder suspect, about to faint, was only wishing that she would let him.

Upstairs, Prince Yinuo was leaning on the railing. “What are you doing?” he asked enthusiastically.

“Watching my wife beat up someone.” Afraid to miss the show, Xia Yujin quickly dragged a stool to the window, holding a plate of salted fried peanuts and sighing as he ate, “How fierce! Really so fierce! I finally understand what Qiu Laohu meant! Ah-Zhao, show some mercy, will you?”

Secretary-General Niu and Secretary-Chancellor Xie also rushed over, sat in a row by Xia Yujin’s side, and started applauding together. Remembering the hardships he’d suffered through in the past few days because of this man, Secretary-General Niu hotly said, “Beat this bastard to death! He made my son run around for so long!”

“Your Highness,” Secretary-Chancellor Xie said unhurriedly, “don’t let General Ye beat him to death, we still have questions for him.”

“Ye Zhao’s as strong as ever,” sighed Prince Yinuo.

Xia Yujin immediately brushed up on the greetings he sent those eighteen generations of his ancestors.

[1 ↑] This is a restaurant, although it technically has the same name as the imperial pavilion where the Emperor first welcomed the Eastern Xia delegation (which I translated as “Great Welcome Pavilion” because the name was simply too straightforward to keep in pinyin) in chapter 32-33.

[2 ↑] The only male adults allowed to work and live inside the imperial palace (apart from the Emperor) were eunuchs.
