Chapter 27: Master (2)

Old Lin, whose legs were clutched, was probably never approached this way. He stopped and looked down at her, but did not speak.

Lin Zhao Xi asked, “Why aren’t you asking me why I grabbed your leg?”

“It’s none of my business.”

Lin Zhao Xi: ?

Playing cards so irrationally was really a lot like Old Lin.

Old Lin obviously didn’t want to talk to her. She looked around to find something to talk about and unexpectedly found Lu Zhihao still standing in the same place.

She waved to Little Lu for him to leave quickly, then paused, looked up, and asked Old Lin, “where is that boy from just now?”

Old Lin raised his eyebrow nonchalantly, silent. But after being Old Lin’s precious little cotton-padded jacket for more than 20 years, she guessed that Old Lin was put off by her inaccurate use of adjectives.

There were so many boys here, which one do you mean?

That’s what Old Lin meant, more or less.

“That good-looking kid that fought against the king of mental arithmetic!”

“He left.” Old Lin was concise and to the point.

Of course he’d leave. Probably for the same reason she would. An adult arrived, everything was fine…

Lin Zhao Xi had no regrets. She continued holding onto Old Lin’s leg, even though she could tell he was already getting impatient. Calming down, she sat down without letting go of him, and tried to think of a way to answer the most important question at that moment: how could she determine whether the person in front of her was really her dad?

“That question!” Lin Zhao Xi suddenly interjected, “The question the boy asked just now. How much is 1.234 × 7.890 + 973.260 – 518 + 3.144 – 1.071.246? I want to know!”

“0.”

She hadn’t even closed her mouth before she heard a hoarse voice casually answer her.

Lin Zhao Xi jerked her head up, catching Old Lin’s expression. It clearly said, “damn it, I was careless, how could I just blurt it out?”

“Mister is so smart!” In the distance, her little friend Lu Zhihao looked at Old Lin with admiration.

Old Lin awkwardly shifted, drawing the cigarette out of his mouth. He shook it beside him. Snow-white soot fell on the ground.

Lin Zhao Xi realized that Old Lin was afraid the cigarette ash would land on her head.

And she was now very sure that he was Old Lin.

The moment she confirmed her suspicions, the tension and fatigue accumulated along the day poured out, and the pain in her body was suddenly clear. Her hands and legs were very painful. She loosened her hands around Old Lin’s legs, eyes red, and slowly looked at her palms and knees. Both had abrasions with blood oozing out.

“Let go now!” Old Lin told her.

“No.”

“Lin Zhaoxi, let the stranger go.” When Old Lin didn’t deem to open his mouth, Xiao Lu quickly walked to them, squatted down, and nudged her.

“He is not just a stranger.” Lin Zhao Xi said with certainty.

Old Lin looked down at her.

Swathed by Old Lin’s freezing eyes, Lin Zhao Xi forcefully resisted the impulse to shout “He is my father!”. In an instant, countless thoughts flashed through her mind. It was easy to identify Old Lin, but she was abandoned at the door of the orphanage when she was a baby. How could an orphan who was abandoned as a baby immediately recognize their own father?

And she didn’t know why she was separated from her father in this world, it’d be too easy to cause undesired ripple effects.

But… she was still a kid, couldn’t she do whatever she wanted?

An idea surged in Lin Zhao Xi’s mind.

“This is my master!” She said to Lu Zhihao, while pointing at Old Lin.

“You know each other?” Her gullible buddy asked.

Old Lin: “No.”

Lin Zhao Xi: “We’ll get to know each other right away!”

They both said almost at the same time.

Lin Zhao Xi tightened her hold on Old Lin’s leg and earnestly pleaded, “Master, you can calculate so fast, you must be very good at math. Please accept me as your apprentice.”

“Let, go.” He only uttered haltingly.

“Coach… Uhh, I mean, Master, I want to learn math.”

“That has nothing to do with me.” Old Lin tried to step away.

“Master! My leg hurts…” Lin Zhao Xi hastily wailed, as if he was the one that cut up her knees.

“Go to the hospital. What, are you waiting for me to carry you?” Old Lin grumpily turned away, intending to leave.

“How do you know?” Lin Zhao Xi asked, facing his back.

Old Lin slowly turned around, pointed at her, and said to Lu Zhihao, “Kid, your classmate is asking too much.”

“But, mister, I also think you should take her there to bandage her knees.”

“It’s not that I won’t take her.” Old Lin solemnly continued.

“Then, why?”

The change in his eyes agitated Lin Zhao Xi so much that she almost stood up. But then, Old Lin’s words sharply turned, giving her an overwhelming urge to punch someone.

“She’s so fat, I can’t carry her.”

Said Old Lin.
