Pa! A resounding slap on the face successfully stunned Jiang Chengyan. He stared at Ling Huaan in disbelief, hoping that he could offer him an explanation, but it took a long time for him to recall that Ling Huaan was actually blind.

“Why did you hit me?”

“Why did you lie to me?”

“I lied to you?” Jiang Chengyan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “When did I lie to you?”

Ling Huaan fumbled and picked up the fifty note. “This is ten yuan?” he asked expressionless.

Jiang Chengyan was stunned and felt guilty. He hastily explained, “Even if it’s not ten yuan, I’ll never give you less money.”

“How much?” Ling Huaan held up the note.

Jiang Chengyan mumbled, “Fifty.”

“You’re not lying?”

Being watched by Ling Huaan’s peculiar eyes, Jiang Chengyan felt an inexplicable oppression, then said at a loss: “I didn’t mean to lie to you, I just…”

“Sympathy? Pity?” Ling Huaan said coldly, “I have no need for it.”

“I didn’t mean that. Don’t misunderstand, I just want to help you.” Jiang Chengyan explained anxiously.

“How much money did you give me altogether? Come over tomorrow and I’ll pay you back. Go back for now and figure it out.”

Ling Huaan took out 45 yuan from the checkout counter, placed the pack of instant noodles on the table and said, “You can go now.”

His gaze lingering at Ling Huaan, Jiang Chengyan picked up the money and instant noodles then turned around to leave. He walked out of the store, and glanced back just in time to catch Ling Huaan looking out of the window.  He felt nervous and had the sudden impulse to run back.

Then he remembered that Ling Huaan was blind. He touched his throbbing face and muttered in a low voice, “I’m just doing a good deed. But at the end of the day, not only did I get beaten, I also have to make amends. It isn’t reasonable.”

Wang Lei whispered in Ling Huaan’s ear, “Boss, that ghost has been knocked down.”

Ling Huaan nodded. He closed the drawer and stared straight at the headless ghost floating across him.

Suddenly, the small bell hanging in the door of the shop rang continuously, the normal lights flickered on and off. A gust of chilly wind blew, and the things on the checkout counter fell and scattered on the ground.

A hoarse voice spoke, its voice sounded neither far nor near: “Who are you? Have I ever wronged you?”

“You’re a resentful ghost that have just taken shape. Once you do something that would cause harm, you won’t be able to reincarnate. I’m just helping you.”

The wind stopped suddenly, and the voice rang out again: “How did I die, who was my enemy… Why can’t I remember?”

“Because you died in vain with a resentful heart, and your memories before death remain unclear. You won’t be able to reincarnate.”

“What should I do? Why do you know that? Who are you?”

“Knowing my identity isn’t important. What matters is that I can help you.”

“How can you help me?”

“I can help you find out the truth about your death, dispel the resentment that lingers in your heart and help you reincarnate.” Ling Huaan paused for a moment, then said: “But I have conditions.”

“As long as you could help me find out the truth, I will agree no matter the conditions!”

“I want one fifth of all your property. If you consent, place your fingerprint on this piece of paper.”

Ling Huaan took out an inkpad out of his pocket and a piece of yellow paper from the drawer under the cash register. On the surface, few lines of calligraphy which were written in small regular script were carefully and neatly drawn. The font was very beautiful, which was in no way inferior to those so-called calligraphers.

Suddenly, when the fierce ghost saw the words on the paper, he immediately became a fan and exclaimed, “Who wrote this? It’s so beautiful! Is it on sale? Do you want to have a painting and calligraphy exhibition? I can provide the venue free of charge!”

Wang Lei was stunned by the sudden transformation of the headless ghost, and muttered: “Boss, is this guy ok?”

“I don’t want to sell it, and I don’t want to hold a painting and calligraphy exhibition. If you agree, press your fingerprint on it. ”

“You wrote this? How old are you this year? Which school are you from?” The headless ghost chattered excitedly.

Ling Huaan frowned slightly and silently looked at the headless ghost, his expression a little impatient.

The headless ghost suddenly felt an invisible sense of oppression and said, “I’m already a ghost. Can I still press my fingerprints?”

“This inkpad is special. If you agree, just press it.”

The headless ghost hesitated for a bit, reached out his finger and pressed it on the inkpad.

He just wanted to finish and leave his print on the paper, but Ling Huaan suddenly stopped him. Puzzled by his actions, he looked at Ling Huaan and asked, “What’s the matter?”

“Don’t press, your fingerprints are gone. Wait until you remember who you are then you can sign it.”

The headless ghost raised his hand to check, but forgot that he has no head right now. “Well, don’t look at it! It actually isn’t easy to talk to me with your current situation. Do you remember who you are and where you live?”

The headless ghost replied blankly, “Who am I? Who am I… ”

Sensing the resurging wind, Ling Huaan hurriedly interrupted and said, “Well, it’s normal if you don’t remember. Don’t think about it anymore and just tell me what you recall. ”

The headless ghost was silent for a moment and said: “I only remember painting in a studio. There were a lot of oil paintings in that studio, so I think my work could be related to oil pointing.”

“Earlier, you mentioned that you could provide a venue for free. This statement shows that you have the ability to hold a painting and calligraphy exhibition, and you also mentioned that your work is related to oil painting. We can conclude that you were probably a famous painter. Think about it carefully, and don’t hide anything that could be used as a clue.”

There was another moment of silence. The headless ghost thought for a long time, then uttered, “There is a little boy, maybe five or six years old. I call him Han Han. I can’t remember anything else. ”

“Okay, I see.” Ling Huaan took out a small bell made of copper. Written on top of it were numerous ancient red characters. “Stay in this bell for the time being until this matter is settled.”

When Li Huaan finished speaking, he recited a mantra. Without waiting for the headless ghost to recover, he unexpectedly felt a powerful force sucking him in. In the blink of an eye, he was in a narrow space.

The headless ghost was startled. After a while, his scattered thoughts came back and asked, his tone amazed, “Great Master, Shenxian, who are you?”

“I’m Ling Huaan, owner of the grocery store.”

October 25, 3020, in the office of the criminal investigation team, Jiang Chengyan arrived early in the morning to call a meeting for the arrangement of the next investigation task.

“Captain, why are you still wearing a face mask in the office?” Yao Min asked, his tone odd.

Jiang Chengyan touched his face. Ling Huaan slapped him really hard yesterday, and the slapped part was still swollen, so he wore a mask to cover it. Otherwise, these stinky boys who are unafraid of the chaos in the world would definitely get to the bottom of this.

“I have a cold. I don’t wanna infect you.” Jiang Chengyan’s response lacked enthusiasm, then he immediately changed the topic. “Now let’s sort out the case and arrange the next task.”

Everyone quieted down, took out their notebooks and focused their gaze on Jiang Chengyan.

Jiang Chengyan looked at Yao Min and asked, “Did you took notes of the drunkard last night?”

Yao Min nodded. “The man who found the body was Luo Da. He’s 45 years old, he’s divorced, and has a son that lives with him. He was in a bad mood due to work, and drank in a small restaurant not far from the crime scene until it closed at 10 p.m. Because of his drunken tendencies, he knocked over the garbage can and found the body inside. Due to the time, I haven’t gotten the chance to report it. ”

“Aside from these, what other useful clues did he offer?”

Yao Min thought about it and said, “Oh right, he also said that there were two other people present at the crime scene. A man and a woman, standing at the entrance of the alley not far away from the garbage can. They were already there before he even arrived.”

“Alley entrance? There’s a surveillance camera placed there. If I was the killer, I would never stand there. However, since they appeared earlier than Luo Da, they might’ve seen something. Li Tong and Zhang Liang, you two are responsible for monitoring the alley entrance and finding out who these two people are. ”

Zhang Liang and Li Tong looked at each other, stood up in succession then said, “Roger, captain. We’ll be leaving now.”

“Besides the surveillance there, when you look around the perimeter, it’s a T-junction. All three intersections should be monitored. For the time being, obtain the surveillance 48 hours before the crime.”

“Roger, captain.” Zhang Liang and Li Tong walked out of the office one after another.

“At present, we still haven’t found the head. His fingerprints have been destroyed, so it’s difficult for us to identify him. Now we can only trace him back to the most recent missing people. Yao Min, Liu Ran, I’ll leave this task to the both of you. ”

“Roger. We’re going.” Yao Min and Liu Ran got up and left the office.

Jiang Chengyan closed his notebook and glanced at Wang Bin. “Wang Bin, you and I will cooperate with the others to continue the search for the remaining body part around the crime scene. The scope is set at 10 kilometer radius.”

“Roger.”

“Good. Disperse.”

Jiang Chengyan got up and walked out of the office. Wang Bin quickly followed, “Captain, where are we going?”

“Visit the forensic medicine first and see the autopsy.”

Two people arrived at Su Ke’s office, but found no one in it. When they came out, they happened to meet the assistant forensic doctor Hu Yang.

“Hu Yang, where’s Su Ke?”

“He’s still in the dissecting room.”

“Still in the dissecting room? Did he stay up all night?” Jiang Chengyan frowned slightly.

“Un, he’s been there since last night.” Hu Yang hesitated for a moment, then said: “Jiang dui, you advise Su Ke. In addition to the case of the second team, he hasn’t had a proper rest for two days. If this goes on, even a body made of iron will not hold up. ”

“All right, go ahead. I’ll go have a look.”

Jiang Chengyan turned to the autopsy lab and moved straight to the door.

“Su Ke, why didn’t you go home to rest yesterday?”

“It’s a homicide case, and the case this time involves dismemberment. If I dissect the corpse as soon as possible, I’ll be able to save myself a lot of trouble.” Su Ke closed his tired eyes and raised his hand to wipe his sweat with his sleeve.

“Don’t move.” Jiang Chengyan took out a tissue and wiped it for him. He said with concern, “Look at yourself, it’s like you’re on the verge of collapsing. If you fall down, what would happen to the case?”

“I’m a big man. I’m not as weak as you think. Worry about yourself. What’s got you so conscious today? You’re even wearing a mask.”

Poor Jiang Chengyan. He got slapped and now his face is hurt :(( ksksjdks. He’s such a nice and caring captain though. I’m inlove~ ♡(ӦvӦ。) Li Huaan is kinda cool too though AAAAAaaAa kkskskddjd I’m loving them both. My back hurts but it’s worth it. Also, I love how they call it dissecting room lmao. But wait, if the headless ghost is headless, then how is speaking…
