Chapter 18: 18

If audio player doesn't work, press Stop then Play button again

Sorry this chapter took so long, it was way longer then the usual chapters, almost double of what the author usually writes.

After looking over the raw source that I’m using it looks like there are split chapters in the future. Not a lot but a few, just because of how long the author wrote it. The author usually writes between 2000-2600 words, but if a chapter should exceed 4100 words I’ll split it up just because of how long it takes to translate it. So each split chapter has the same amount as a regular update but it’s split just because of how long the original is. Hope you guys understand, sorry I couldn’t keep my promise about not splitting chapters, but the author really went all out on some chapters.

Might have another chapter today, but if not, all three chapters will be out some time tomorrow.

Qiao Lan sat in her room dumbfounded for a long time.

She was only 16!

Were they crazy?! Thinking of finding in-laws when their daughter was only 16!

She had thought before that if she did well on the exam this time, the Qiao family would treat her better. But now she understands that for these people, it was even more exciting to marry rich than to attend Peking or Tsinghua University.

Qiao Lan suddenly felt a sense of crisis.

No matter how good at studying she was, it is of no use to them.

If they really found a so-called “suitable candidate” for Qiao Lan and Qiao Lan disagreed, then would Father Qiao and Mother Qiao stop her from studying?

Probably.

Actually…it wasn’t even a possibility, knowing them, they definitely would.

She had no money to pay for her school tuition, so if the Qiao family stopped paying her tuition, then she would have no choice but to stop going to school.

Before, she had thought that she would be able to graduate from high school and then go to a university far away, so that she could get rid of this family of hers.

But now that she heard Mother Qiao’s plan, Qiao Lan realized that she needed do something, and quick

She needed to make a plan as soon as possible.

That night, Qiao Lan struggled to fall asleep amidst the shouts of Second Sister Qiao and Mother Qiao.

The next day she went to school and walked into the classroom. There were only a dozen students living in the classroom, and some of her classmates took the initiative to greet her.

After being alone for nearly a month, Qiao Lan had forgotten how it felt to talk to her classmates.

After she got back, she sat in her seat, took out her Politics textbook, and went outside to recite and memorize the book as usual, whole also doing some morning exercises.

After she was done, she headed back to the classroom. Along the way she took a cup and went to get water. When she finished her water and was heading back to her seat, she glanced back unconsciously, and happened to see Tan Mo slowly rolling his wheelchair.

After nearly a month of morning greetings, Qiao Lan subconsciously wanted to say good morning to Tan Mo again, but she stopped the words at the tip of her tongue.

After talking with Tan Mo that day, on the way home, Qiao Lan tried to understand things from Tan Mo’s point of view and empathized with him.

A person who has not been in contact with outsiders for a long time would definitely be afraid of someone taking the initiative to greet them. Additionally they would be very resistant to forming any type of social bond with anyone.

Tan Mo was a person who has suffered from Asperger’s Syndrome since childhood, so his reaction could only be more serious. So in her opinion, even just a gentle greeting would definitely make Tan Mo very repulsed and at loss.

Tan Mo also saw Qiao Lan.

He was sure that Qiao Lan had also seen him.

He didn’t realize it but Tan Mo’s hands quickened its pace in pushing the wheelchair forward. But unfortunately, when he raised his head again, the girl that stopped and talked to him whenever she saw him was gone.

The hand that was placed on the wheelchair trembled ever so slightly and Tan Mo sat there frozen for a while.

No one would know but at this moment Tan Mo actually wanted to take the initiative to say good morning to Qiao Lan.

Tan Mo lowered his head, rolled his wheelchair again after a while. He entered the classroom, and returned to the shadow that he had been sitting in for more than two months.

While Qiao Lan sat at the door, the one person farthest away from him.

Tan Mo’s light brown eyes fixedly looked in Qiao Lan’s direction. He saw Qiao Lan, who had never communicated with anyone else other than him, talking with her new table mate.

He didn’t know what they were saying, but they spoke for a long time, around one minute or two minutes.

How much could you say in two minutes? Tan Mo didn’t know.

After the death of his mother, he had never communicated with anyone for more than two minutes.

Despite Qiao Lan talking with him everyday for weeks, the total amount of actual conversation they had would not have exceeded 2 minutes.

The sourness that had rushed into his heart that day came back, and he knew that there was something wrong with this emotion. But he couldn’t describe what it was like, he just knew that he didn’t want to see Qiao Lan and other people talking so much with each other.

Tan Mo has been in this seat for more than two months. He had never felt anything wrong with it, but now he was dissatisfied.

It was too far.

It was too far away, so far that he couldn’t hear Qiao Lan’s voice at all.

Qiao Lan’s new tablemate was Pei Ning, a boy who was about the same size as Qiao Lan and had a very introverted personality.

It wasn’t the same as Tan Mo’s indifference to strangers, but more like an timid and introverted personality.

After talking with him for a bit Qiao Lan suspected that Pei Ning might like Song Yao.

Knowing this, Qiao Lan felt a little guilty. If it weren’t because she had been determined to not sit at the same table as Chen Yaoyang, then Pei Ning’s tablemate might have been Song Yao.

But now there was no way for that to happen.

Pei Ning was introverted, but if you had any questions, he would still tell you everything he knew and try to help you the best he could.

Qiao Lan had asked Pei Ning about the financial aid or scholarships that the high school offered.

Yesterday, after hearing Mother Qiao and Second Sister Qiao saying those things, Qiao Lan didn’t sleep well all night. So after coming to the class she tried to find out more information that could help her situation.

Pei Ning didn’t know much, but he knew much more than Qiao Lan. After Pei Ning finished speaking, Qiao Lan had a general understanding.

Qiao Lan herself was a poor student, so she has the financial aid of 200 yuan every month, which would be added to her meal card. That was something half of the students who needed financial aid recieved.

But the scholarships are different. The scholarship system of the high school is privately set by the school. The standards for the first-class scholarship was very simple and straightforward, and that was the person with the highest score at the end of the two semesters would recieve it.

It is given out once a year, and worth five thousand yuan.

The other prize is for students whose final score was in the top four and did not qualify for the first prize. They can get 3,000 yuan.

Hearing this, Qiao Lan was very excited.

High school fees were not too expensive, it was 800 yuan a semester, and 600 yuan for accommodation. If you can get a scholarship, then you wouldn’t  have to worry about tuition. In the future, even if Father Qiao and Mother Qiao refused to allow her to go to school, at least she could still afford the tuition and accommodation fees.

Of course, it was still uncertain whether the money could be obtained. Even if it could be obtained, it would be at the end of the first year of high school which was still far away. So in addition to the scholarship, Qiao Lan had to find a way to save more money.

She couldn’t count on the Qiao family. It’s better to rely on oneself then other people. Thinking this, Qiao Lan decided to go look for work as quickly as she could.

She needed to take advantage of the fact that she still had a lot of free time as a first year. Compared to the busy schedules of second year students who had to do evening study sessions, Qiao Lan had it easy.

Waiting for the weekend, Qiao Lan planned to go out to find work and save some money. If she didn’t she won’t have living expenses in the future.

After making some good plans, Qiao Lan felt relieved.

In order to make more time, Qiao Lan took her classes more seriously, so that her time after class was not wasted reviewing or extra studying.

Pei Ning usually studied very hard, but after sitting next to Qiao Lan and seeing Qiao Lan’s learning enthusiasm, he suddenly felt like he didn’t work hard enough.

So inexplicably, he started to work harder.

The results of Class 13 were at the forefront of the school, but since the mid-term exam, the learning enthusiasm of Class 13 had become more visible to the naked eye.

The students all had the same ideas in their hearts. Qiao Lan, even with her poor foundation, could get first in the grade. If this was possible then nothing was impossible.

Even Chen Yaoyang, who was already very smart, didn’t want to be pressed down by Qiao Lan in the next exams. Due to this he began to study and recite his books daily.

Old Liu was very impressed after seeing such a strong learning atmosphere and was happy all day. The head teachers of the other classes stood on the podium every day and scolded their students constantly.

“Class 13 completely destroyed you guys in the class ranking and yet you’re still working like that! What qualifications do you have to not study hard?!”

Because of this, when Qiao Lan got up early to recite her books, she found that there were many more students around her who were also reciting.

The last class of the afternoon was once again PE.

It was with Class 5, which was the class that Hao Ying was in.

Qiao Lan actually liked sports, and did not dislike physical education like most would believe. When she was in high school, she had some close classmates and they would often sit and talk together during PE.

But now, since the midterm results came out, her classmates have gradually started to talk to her, but it was just small talk, and she still wasn’t very close to them.

For Qiao Lan, such a physical education class was not fun at all.

As usual, Qiao Lan was going to head back to the classroom to read books as usual after the class to let loose to do whatever activity they wanted.

But today, the physical education teacher suddenly changed his mind and did not disband the students after they finished the opening activity, but instead, organized the whole class to do activities together.

A bunch of boys who had brought basketball and were going to play with Class 5 began to cry together.

The physical education teacher was completely unmoved, and happily took the whole class to the big playground, and enthusiastically “played games with the students.”

The boys looked at their classmates in Class 5 on the court, and the girls looked at those sitting on the side. The girls who usually listened to music and chatted on the lawn all protested with every cell in their body.

But their protests were ignored.

No one knew what strange thing the physical education teacher smoked today. One class was forty-five minutes, and when the class activity was finally over, there was only five minutes left.

They had spent the entire class playing the games that the PE teacher set up.

Qiao Lan, who wanted to go back to the classroom to read, looked at the time, but in the end she didn’t go back and waited for the bell.

There were only five minutes left, and everyone had nowhere to go, they were all walking and talking, especially now that there were several campus celebrities on the court.

For example, Song Yao, whom many boys like, and Chen Yaoyang and Hao Ying, who attracted almost all of the girls present. All the attention was focused on these three people, with everyone watching their every move.

But since taking the midterm exams, another person, Qiao Lan has been added to this group.

The first in the grade, this title had  always been very intriguing. Many students came directly from class to watch them, now that they were in physical education. Knowing that Qiao Lan was here, many students were also watching Qiao Lan.

“Qiao Lan, she’s the girl with the high ponytail over there.”

“She got 108 points higher than me in the exams. She’s really awesome, but she’s not very good-looking.”

“It’s good enough to study well. Why do they need to be good-looking?” Some people retorted and asked them to take a look at Qiao Lan again, “Her features aren’t that bad, her facial features are actually very beautiful, if she was a little whiter, she would be absolutely beautiful.”

“She’s so tall, she’s definitely more than 1.7 meters, and her legs are so long…”

“She’s too thin…”

“God I want to be that thin…”

Everyone continued to chatter, until the teacher yelled to dismiss them. Hearing him the student slowly walked back to the classroom.

Qiao Lan went back to  the classroom with the crowd, when suddenly a person jumped out from behind her. Qiao Lan subconsciously dodged the person, and when she turned her head, she came face to face with Hao Ying’s brilliant smile.

Looking at his white and uniformed teeth, Qiao Lan’s first thought was that the boy could go to shoot a toothpaste advertisement.

Hao Ying acted very familiar with her. He had just finished playing and had taken off his jacket and was only wearing a sleeveless T-shirt. Holding the ball in his hand, he ignored the surprised expressions of the crowd around him and said to Qiao Lan, “Thank you. “

Thank you?

Thanks for what?

Qiao Lan felt a little confused, “I think you have the wrong person.”

“How could that be?” Hao Ying said. Last time he believed that Qiao Lan had lied to him, so he found Qiao Lan’s name. How was it possible that he got the wrong person.

Hao Ying felt a little better when he thought of this. This time he got 123 points in mathematics, and his father gave him a lot of pocket money, and his mother gave him the latest iPhone.

Li Fan and Qin Yang patted Chen Yaoyang, “When did Qiao Lan meet Hao Ying?”

“I don’t know,” Chen Yaoyang frowned, he was also surprised. After all, Hao Ying and Qiao Lan weren’t in the same class, and Chen Yaoyang didn’t even think of the possibility of those two ever meeting.

Some people were talking, some were playing with their mobile phones, and so no one noticed the teenager in a wheelchair on the first floor of the teaching building.

The pale boy looked at the smile on Qiao Lan’s face and the tall and handsome boy next to her.

That boy loved to laugh, was sunny, lively, healthy, and was completely different from the introverted, gloomy, and disabled him.

No one knew Tan Mo, who never took the initiative to walk out of the classroom. He had stayed there for a few minutes, and no one knew what he was looking at or what he saw.

The setting sun gradually fell, and the sun shone on the empty table in front of Tan Mo.

Qiao Lan returned to the classroom, even though she had decided not to disturb Tan Mo again, she still glanced at Tan Mo subconsciously.

Her brows frowned silently.

Tan Mo was not in the classroom.

But Qiao Lan didn’t think much about it. Tan Mo may have left early during the physical education class today because there were few people.

When she got home, Mother Qiao kept her eyes on Qiao Lan, and looked at Qiao Lan up and down, while muttering with dissatisfaction, “Our kids are all white, how can you be so dark.”

Mother Qiao was a little worried. Her second daughter said that she would introduce someone to Qiao Lan. If they thought Qiao Lan was ugly, how would the Qiao family deal with such a thing.

Qiao Lan: …

She wasn’t white, but she wasn’t completely dark.

Besides, she was malnourished, so obviously she was yellow and thin. If she was able to eat good food then she might be whiter than the little white fat man Qiao Yuan.

Since Mother Qiao suddenly began to pay attention to Qiao Lan’s appearance, which was not a good thing for Qiao Lan. Qiao Lan couldn’t wait for the weekend, and planned to go after school on Friday to see if there was any job recruitment.

After going to school the next day, Qiao Lan looked back several times during the day, but didn’t see Tan Mo.

Tan Mo did not come today.

Why didn’t he come?

Was he sick?

Or did something happen at home?

As a result, Tan Mo still did not come the next day, and no one in the class felt surprised. When she met the class teacher on her way home after school Qiao Lan inquired about it, and the class teacher said he didn’t know.

Tan Mo was different from other students in that he doesn’t have to go to school nor did he have to ask for leave.

Qiao Lan went home, ate something casually, put down her school bag, and went out to find a place to work.

In the past, Qiao Lan’s high school education was funded by well-wishers, so she didn’t have to worry about tuition, but if she had free time, she would still have gone to work to earn some money. After all, there was no source of income, which would make people feel insecure.

Later, after going to university, she even worked a few jobs to support her tuition and living expenses.

She used to hand out flyers and worked as a waiter in college, and all kinds of jobs. After college, Qiao Lan could find a better job as a tutor because of her good college entrance examination results and because she was able to enter the best financial university in the country.

Qiao Lan now has only a freshman in high school, so she could only work at night and on weekends. It was too difficult to find a job where she could work for a long time.

Qiao Lan wandered from 7 to 10 in the evening, holding a bunch of recruitment slips in her hand, and copying many addresses and phone numbers in her notebook. She didn’t get home until nearly 11 o’clock, and her ears automatically blocked the chattering of the Old Lady Qiao and went to bed early.

She went out again at dawn the next day.

Take out the recruitment flyers that she had selected yesterday, she went to ask them one by one.

Qiao Lan is just a high school student now, so finding a job was very inconvenient. She couldn’t find anything all morning. She was not 18 yet, and only had a junior high school degree. After looking around for nearly a day, she still couldn’t find anything.

Gradually, one day passed and night came again. The surrounding lights gradually turned on and Qiao Lan went to the store to buy a piece of bread and sat on a chair next to a small alley on a gravel road to look around.

Nearly ten minutes later, a western restaurant that hadn’t been open finally turned on their lights. The graceful proprietress put up a business sign with her hair tied up, and a while later posted a recruitment form on the glass.

Qiao Lan finished her bread in two bites, wiped her hands, and walked in.

She saw this western restaurant when she first passed by this area. It had two floors and the decorations were very exquisite. Now that the lights were turned on, it was even more unique.

After looking for a day, even the worst job could not be found. Qiao Lan simply wanted to try to find a better job, it was already very difficult finding a bad job, so she might as well take a chance.

Part of the reason she wanted the job was because she had once worked in a western restaurant, and learned how to make coffee, and speak pretty good English.

When Qiao Lan walked in, the lady boss glanced at Qiao Lan, “What would you like to eat?”

Qiao Lan pointed to the window, “I’m here to apply.”

Qiao Lan, who has been busy all day, finally made some progress.

The proprietress said she didn’t want an underage worker, Qiao Lan said that she was already sixteen years old. The proprietress also said that she should have a high school degree or above. Qiao Lan said that she had good grades.

She had been arguing with the proprietress for nearly half an hour, and the proprietress seemed impatient. Luckily, a clerk had requested for leave today and there were many customers. Qiao Lan volunteered that she would make coffee, and the proprietress let Qiao Lan give it a try.

The proprietress did not expect that the little girl was very dexterous, the most important thing was that she was very skilled, whether it was making coffee or ordering, she was very proficient.

But Qiao Lan’s time is a problem. Qiao Lan can only come in the evening and weekends. Qiao Lan said that she can pay less.

The proprietress stared at Qiao Lan for a long time. She was a little sympathetic. Finally, she agreed to hire Qiao Lanand asked her to come to the store at 11 o’clock tomorrow morning.

Qiao Lan went out looking for a day and finally found a job. Although she only paid more than one thousand yuan a month, she was already very satisfied!

After starting work the next day, Qiao Lan found out that although the location of this shop was quite off-the-wall and the items were also very expensive, there were not many people here. Additionally, many of those who came were regular customers.

—————————————

Tan Mo didn’t like to go out very much, especially during the past two days, but Tan’s father came to pick him up, and Tan Mo finally went out.

Tan Mo and his mother had always lived abroad, because of this Father Qiao thought that Tan Mo might like Western food, so he took him to the western restaurant he usually went to. Although the restaurant was not very big, the environment and taste was first-class.

“The food is really good here,” Father Tan said, but Tan Mo’s expression was faint, and there was no reaction at all.

Father Tan asked Tan Mo again why he didn’t go to school these two days. The teacher had specifically called to ask him about Tan Mo yesterday.

Tan Mo was sitting in a wheelchair, expressionless, “I didn’t want to go.”

Father Tan frowned.

He had finally persuaded Tan Mo to go to school, but he didn’t know what happened, but Tan Mo suddenly no longer wanted to go to school.

Father Tan happened to have some free time today, so he took Tan Mo out for dinner, and wanted to have a heart-to-heart talk with Tan Mo.

Father Tan’ was used to being a leader. While talking to Tan Mo it was fine at first, but after speaking for awhile, his tone changed to the one he used when talking to his subordinates. Tan Mo was already annoyed, and he wanted to leave even more. He was about to when  he looked up, and suddenly saw a familiar back figure.
