Chapter 21 – Back to school

Before they left, You Yu cleaned the house up and down. The newly bought kitchenware was put in the cabinet, the dried quilts were stuffed into the wardrobe, and the bed and sofa were covered again as if they were leaving temporarily and would come back soon.

The snow was almost gone on the road, and in the small courtyard behind the house, there was only a small pile of snow under the loquat tree.
When it snowed before, Chi Tang built a very deformed snowman there.

When she was washing the dishes in the kitchen, she wanted to laugh every time she saw the little snowman under the loquat tree through the window.

After a winter, tired flower buds formed on the loquat tree. When the two left and closed the door, Chi Tang suddenly remembered and asked,

“When can loquats be eaten?”

“April and May.” You Yu answered her, wondering whether Chi Tang was a little reluctant to leave here?

They went to the bus together, Chi Tang closed her eyes all the way. You Yu saw her throat move occasionally, which meant she was not sleeping but suffering from motion sickness.

The bus ran forward gently, and the surrounding scenery was a bit familiar. You Yu turned to look at Chi Tang’s face buried in her down jacket, and couldn’t help but think of the question in her heart: How can I be nice to this person and make her happy?

As long as she could study and earn some money to support herself, she would be happy, but Chi Tang seemed to want nothing, then nothing could make her happy.

The first friend she met in her life was so good that she didn’t know how to repay her.

The bus stopped, which meant that their escape journey was officially over. They got out of the bus, Chi Tang still looked like the motion sickness hadn’t been relieved, drank two sips of water, and said, “Go directly to the head teacher’s house, and I told him to wait for you.”

Seeing that she was leaving, You Yu held her and stared at her intently,
“What about you, are you going home?”

Chi Tang’s mouth twitched: “Definitely don’t want to go back.”

You Yu: “Then, will you be okay?”

Chi Tang waved her hand unconcernedly: “What can happen? It’s not the first time I ran out. My dad is used to it. Even if he is angry, can he kill me?”

After that she got on the bus again, You Yu looked back after a while, frowning with some anxiety.

Is it okay?

Fortunately, they are about to start school, and only two or three days were left. Even if Chi Tang was not happy at home, she would soon be able to live at school again.

She went to the home of the headteacher, bowed and thanked him, and apologized twice.

The headteacher sighed helplessly: “You are a little kid, why do you apologize? We can’t do anything about your father, don’t apologize. You and Chi Tang are both, you two little children, alas.”

After two days everyone went back to school. You Yu went to the classroom early and waited for Chi Tang while reading. This was the first time she read a book so carelessly that she didn’t get the words into her mind, and only memorized a few sentences.

Just back to school from the vacation, the students in the classroom laughed and laughed. At first glance, they were unwilling to study. They had not been able to calm down for a long time. Some classmates arrived late. Chi Tang was one of them. The class was about to start when You Yu saw her carrying a small bag and slowly walking into the classroom.

She wore a sweater under her down jacket, a hat on her head, and a mask on her face. The anxiety that You Yu felt before she saw receded only to come back when she saw Chi Tang’s face.

She came in quietly. No one else in the class paid much attention, but You Yu noticed her. A faint bluish-purple appeared under the mask Chi Tang was wearing.

Chi Tang sat in her seat and looked out the window without saying a word. After a while, she felt You Yu’s eyes still on her, and she turned her head reluctantly, and pulled off her hat, “What’s wrong? you haven’t seen me for two days.”

She didn’t tie her hair today. Her hair that grew up to her shoulders was draped, and there was hair on her cheeks. Together with the mask, she managed to partially cover the marks on her cheekbones but the marks were too big to cover them completely.

You Yu hesitated, stretched out, and pulled her mask, Chi Tang leaned back but let You Yu pull it down.

There were obvious bruises on her swollen left cheek.

“You were beaten.”

Chi Tang put the mask away and said, “A bit. Although he hit a little harder.”

You Yu: “…”

Chi Tang: “It’s okay, it’s not the first time my dad hit me.”

In my life, when I was a teenager, when I was most powerless, I wanted to grow up right away. You Yu stared at her friend and said nothing.

You Yu: “I’m sorry.”

Chi Tang: “Why are you sorry for me.”

You Yu: “You helped me but I can’t help you.”

Chi Tang: “I don’t need others to help me. Can they help me beat my dad? No, he beat me and I have already fought back.”

Soon the class started, and the two didn’t talk much, but Chi Tang felt that her deskmate was always looking at her during class. She supported her cheekbones with one hand. She couldn’t help but doodle on the homework sheet.

At noon You Yu disappeared for a while and Chi Tang went back to her bedroom and saw You Yu coming over with a small bag. As soon as she looked at the contents of the bag, she backed away.

“I didn’t apply make-up. The more I apply to try to hide it, the more serious it becomes.”

You Yu was rejected before she spoke. She was used to being rejected, and she opened her mouth and said, “I will apply it with you.”

Chi Tang: “You haven’t been beaten, why would you apply it?”

Classmates whispered in the morning that she was outside on vacation and fighting with unscrupulous youths from other schools. After the afternoon, You Yu also had purple and red. The two of them were laughed at together.

You Yu seemed to be able to guess what Chi Tang was thinking and said seriously: “I am not afraid of being laughed at, nor what they say. If you think this is not beautiful, I will apply it with you.”

The girl turned out to be more ruthless than herself, and Chi Tang was also cruel: “Okay, you can paint with me if you like.”

Who is afraid of whom?

The headteacher who came to class in the afternoon didn’t look so good. After looking at the two of them several times, he was sure what was on their faces. Sure enough, after the class, they were rewarded with a day trip to the two offices.

Chi Tang was ready to ask her about the injury, and might still call her dad to try to mediate like the former headteacher, but the teacher did not ask about her family problems in the end. He just asked her to help her classmates that semester to improve their studies together.

Chi Tang: “Study progress??”

The headteacher turned to her with a kind tone: “Chi Tang, your grades are good. You also made progress in the final exam last year. You must cheer this year and try to advance a few more places, okay?”

The good words were a bit hot, Chi Tang couldn’t say that she didn’t want to study hard. It was very annoying. But You Yu, who was next to her, didn’t scald her mouth, and she agreed seriously as if she had already taken her as her task and burden.

The headteacher looked at the two of them with satisfaction and nodded: “Yes, what can change the fate of a person’s life is learning. No matter how difficult it is now when you grow up and look back, you will just laugh.”

Chi Tang was at an age where she didn’t like listening to middle-aged and elderly people giving motivational speeches. She was not touched by those words and was led back to the classroom by her deskmate with a cold face.

Her simple deskmate seemed to be encouraged by the speech and she devoted herself to studying again, much more seriously than in the morning, like a bottle of water filled with stars, once again settled down.

Chi Tang waited for a long time before the supervisor came to urge her to study hard. She thought that You Yu would be more frantic about her study this year than last year. If she did, Chi Tang would be impatient, but she suddenly ignored it now, Chi Tang felt strange again.

She took out her mobile phone and secretly played her game, then took out a novel and read a few pages, but You Yu did not respond.

“You aren’t urging me to study hard?” Chi Tang asked.

You Yu pursed her lips and announced in a serious low voice: “I think it’s fine. You don’t need to study. I will study for you. I can support you when I work.”

Chi Tang digested the meaning of person at the same table, and then asked for a long time: “So you mean, you want to be my dad?”
