Chapter 15

She made it...Barely.

She spent the previous four months running around doing things, going to get trained in a gym by a professional [Trainer], those were a thing it seems. Running in races because that helped build better control over her [Agility], she did need to either wear a limiter or participate in those other [Metahumans] joined.

Now that anyone could be a [Metahuman] the word didn't hold as much animosity as before, since you only needed to break free from the [Civilian] job to get more power, and even without doing that you could [Awaken] skills with enough practice.

And so, she did this and that, and slowly raised her status, one point at a time. She was getting some weird looks from people around as they noticed her rise in power, even if she was dumping most of it into [Intelligence] and [Wisdom]. One thing that made her curious was how high a [Civilian] could get on life.

Because if her math was right a [Civilian] Level 99 would have almost as many status points as her at level 14, or than a previous normal person at level 22. So, those who decided to stick to the slow life...Would be on the slow life track.

Granted, if you only needed to do normal work and wanted to go home and live life as [Normal], then you probably didn't need those 344 points that level 99 would grant you as [Civilian].

And as such she started ignoring the stares the [Bodybuilders] gave her way, they stopped looking at her weirdly when she plateud her [Agi] and [Str] at 30 and 20, but still was weird to have a mass of muscles look at you and grumble about how you a 'smoll little girl' had as much [STR] than the big macho guy.

"Blame your [Fate]." Was what she wished to answer them with, and the same thing she thought every time anyone came to ask about her [Job], or if she had a variant of [BodyBuilder] and how to unlock it.

She of course didn't have one of those, she liked muscles as much as the next one, but couldn't see herself building her body like that unless Rossie wanted her abs to be hard as steel, then she could compromise.

Either way, her time at the Gym and multiple classes, courses, and activities were enough to build recognition on the [Civilian] grade side of the sports, most of all because some caught on the fact that she had too much status on the physical side with no records of the first months after [Induction]. And like that, her short time on the sports scene ended.

Since they required her to take an [Appraisal] and she wasn't ready for that level of commitment, or not from a civilian entity, not yet anyway. After she got accepted back into the MPI she would read the current regulations, she would need to know if her previous [Identities] were still valid or not, and if she would need to make new ones.

All of her previous social media accounts had banished after all, well...Not all of them, she found a few posts and pictures of Chloe, but since she had no memories from her besides the vague impressions she got at the start...Yeah, she didn't feel like [Chloe] to try and take those, and since one of those was still active...Either her family was using it, or someone stole it, and if it was the second...

Well, she would check on that later to decide what to do.

But for now, "So are you ready Eli-Eli?" Rossie asked bringing her back from the retrospection world.

"Yes, I arrived at level 10 and should have enough Oomph on my spells to make a good impression." Answered Elizabeth looking at her status screen.

It didn't change much skill-wise, but status? The status had changed quite a bit.

She still wished to have more points in her magic status, she had more than before, that was true, but she still wished to have some extras here and there. Mostly because she was still getting used to her new mana pool.

And while she hadn't had enough time to practice her more familiar spells, she was confident in her [Mana Manipulation], so that would do for now. And instead, she would focus on the present!

Like, "Are you ready to return to classes?" Ask Rossie about her plans!

"That is to be seen, if they don't accept you I will break that [Contract] and eat the [Penalty] just to spite them." Even if the girl kept answering like that.

"Rossie, no." And that would turn into something like this.

"Rossie, yes." And Rossie answered back like so.

"I will be accepted, I had less status on the magic status when student...And was limited on what I could cast." Elizabeth tried to reason with Rossie.

"Then you wouldn't mind my plan of breaking the [Contract] if they don't accept you." But Rossie was adamant on that part.

She wasn't sure what breaking a [Contract] could do in this specific case, she wasn't even aware of them, she thought that she meant the [Geass]. But it looked as if those no longer worked as intended. So obviously Rossie meant another thing.

Not that she was telling her what that other thing was.

"Fineeeeee, but if you get your soul hurt again I will not cuddle you for a week." Elizabeth decided to surrender on that front.

"...Can it be half a week?" Rossie answered back at that after thinking for a second.

Could it be?

"...A week, unless you tell me what the deal is with those [Contracts] then I can be convinced to turn it into a work week." Elizabeth had found the Achilles heel of Rossie?

"...Fine." Rossie's acquisition was answer enough.

She had done the impossible!

And she only needed to sacrifice a week of cuddling!

NO WAIT! WHAT HAD SHE DONE?!?

HER CUDDLES!!!

"A [Contract] is how we make sure someone does what he intends to do, in this case, they will make me sign a [Contract] that states that I will end my [Hero] education with them, and if I do not comply with my side of the deal I will be hit by some degree of penalty, that could go from restriction to my use of [Healing] Skills to a [Status Drop]." Rossie finally answered her question.

It kinda sounded like a [Geass] in that it enforced something, but this one seemed to be fully [System Enforced], and if it blocked the use of [Skills], "Does it block [Magic] too?" Elizabeth asked.

It didn't sound like it did, she was able (Barely) to cast [Magic] without the use of [Skills], she had tested it, "...No. It blocks [Skills], so long they don't block my [Magic Circle] skill I should be fine, but they can't block that one since they should be aiming for my [Healer] skills." Rossie answered after a few seconds.

She didn't sound so sure about that, so maybe she was unsure about how many skills they would block? It depended on what the school was guaranteeing on their side.

Actually "And what will they guarantee from the [Contract]?" Elizabeth wondered aloud.

"They will give you a [Fair test]," Rossie answered.

And that was it, she didn't say anything else besides that, "That's it?" Elizabeth asked flabbergasted, that...was a bad trade.

"Yes, they will also do their best to make any result available to the required entities to make your grading [Fair]." Rossie confirmed, "This is more than enough to enforce that type of [Contract] on me, this will quell any doubts about your talent by admitting it is good enough to be a [Transfer Student]. They will disperse any thoughts about you being sub-grade or a bad student, and will help solve the problem of the other schools thinking you are bad with [Mana Manipulation]."

...That did sound tempting, but "Aren't our problems mostly because the MPI leaked notices about me being sub-grade?" Elizabeth brought up an important point out.

And by the face that Rossie made, it was close enough to the truth, "Yes, but we don't have many choices here. The MPI is the only one that accepts Transfer students, and I burned plenty bridges when I didn't return to classes...So it's mostly my fault."

"Well, nothing changes either way. I only need to ace the test." Elizabeth said once more. Like really, how many times had she promised Rossie that she would ace the test?

How hard could it be, granted it should be harder than the entrance exam since...No wait, "I will be a [Transfer Student]?" Elizabeth asked.

"Of course, they can't lump you with new students since you did go to school and went to the [Mid-Terms] even if most of the recordings are lost because of the [Induction]." Rossie answered back, "I mean, they know you are at least average since we came in a two-girl team. And one of them was a [Healer]."

"So they will grade me as if I continued studying?" Elizabeth felt some degree of dread climb into her back.

"Of course not, but the [Test] will be hard, that is why I used the goal of a [C-Tier] as a standard for our goal," Rossie said, "And while I think you could probably squeeze another lever or two in those four months...It would have put you under unnecessary stress, even so getting to level 10 in four months only doing miscellaneous things was fast enough."

"Yeah, especially if you look back to the festival two months ago, who would have thought that would net a whole level," Elizabeth said remembering the summer festival they had gone to.

It had been fun and they had spent the whole day on the streets having fun, so one level for that was nice. Most of her levels had come from big events, so maybe they depended on how many people were affected or how much weight they had behind it?

"Nothing would have changed unless I started experimenting seriously with [Shift] to see if I could get a second identity again, but I would need [The Hydra's Fang] help to get an extra identity since my obsidian bracelet is a bust." And wasn't that the main problem for Elizabeth?

She no longer held a convenient tool to manage two identities...Or well, four. She was only [Elizabeth] now, and whatever identity she decided to stick with as her [Metahuman] persona.

Her [Soulscape] no longer had a convenient station to design her [Shift] anymore, or not one that she had found, she would need to dig into the skill and see if she could make something, but that may require using one of the [Skills] Alexanders had left behind. And those...Those felt like things too advanced for her.

"And [Echidna] hasn't been seen since the [Induction] cured the [Taint], some people say that she died with the [Taint]. So it would be useless to try and look into that," Rossie added to make sure.

She didn't like the idea of Elizabeth going into the slums to look for [Villains], and so, she was barred from that approach, they would try to broach [Echidna] later as [Heroes] or [Magical Girls] but not right now, and definitely not while she was this weak.

"Well, this time I will not be limited on my magic, and since the [Origin] seems to only help with how much [Proficiency] you gain on [System] type magic... My magic will hit as hard as everyone else..." Elizabeth smiled at herself.

"As everyone else that also does not have the required [Skills]." Even if Rossie burst her bubble.

"That will still hit harder than before, and I do have the required skills...I can use [Shadow] and [Lighting] magic since I have both [Manipulation] skills!" Elizabeth grumbled once more.

She had practiced some with spells of those types, she had even rebuilt most of the old [Spell Nodes] she had before, granted she didn't need to use them like that anymore... And she could probably just create a [Lighting Bolt] spell instead of using a formula of ([Lighting]+[Manipulation]) + Bolt.

But she would still use this method, she wasn't sure how much they remembered of how she fought, or if they even had something, but if they did and she suddenly changed her style...Yeah, that could be hard to explain.

Not that they would fight her that much, she was a student that just underwent a traumatic event, so, some changes were to be expected, besides...They had wanted her to embrace her [Affinity] anyway.

"So, who will be the teacher?" Elizabeth asked, wondering if it would be the crazy old man again or not.

"It will probably be Miss Agatha, she was adamant about letting you in, so they probably will let her in the test." Rossie answered while going over something on her phone, after some mumbling (CUTE!) she nodded "Yes, it will be Miss Agatha."

"Miss Agatha? The [Witch] that did our [Awakening] test?" Elizabeth wondered if there were more Agathas in that school.

"The what? She was on the admission, but they only did some lighting testings about what we could do. But yes, that Miss Agatha." Rossie said while fishing for a picture on her phone.

"Here, this is Miss Agatha." Said the pink-haired girl while showing her a picture.

It was indeed the same Agatha she remembered, if said Agatha lost twenty years and turned her skin into that of a young woman. Her forehead didn't have a permanent frown and you could even see some beginnings of a smile on her.

"...Did teacher Agatha's daughter replace her?" Elizabeth asked aghast, no way in the four planes of hell was this the same woman.

"No? She has always looked like this, not for nothing she got the [True Magical Girl] Title." Rossie said while browsing on her phone for something and then projecting it to the screen in their living room.

Articles upon articles of the most popular [Jobs] and [Titles] that some people had got, among them was Agatha as [True Magical Girl] and her statement that while her body had received some mild changes no one remembered she was aware of them. Even if she herself wasn't able to pinpoint them, some joked that she was being humble of course, but she stood by her point.

Stating that [Odyssey] had told her as much, but that the [Goddess of Magic] refused to elaborate on the topic, and she knew why her [Mother] refused to elaborate.

If Agatha ever found out how much she had changed... Yeah, she could see [Miss Agatha] throwing a tantrum, but how had they done it? Was it a [Skill]?

"ITS THAT STUPID SKILL!" Elizabeth exclaimed to the high heavens, it was the [Young Body] skill!

That thing must have modified Agatha's body to mimic a younger body, but since she was old instead of turning her into a teenager it turned her into a young beauty, add in the [Beautiful] skill and you had [Miss Agatha] on the flesh.

Yeah, "And she wants to make sure I get in?" Elizabeth asked, she didn't remember Agatha ever looking at her kindly.

"Yeah, that's her thing, to make sure everyone receives education. And since most of the school can't quite remember you since you were at the epicenter of the [Induction] she wants you to recover your old life. Miss Agatha is a softie like that." Rossie smiled at her while answering.

Yeah...Did Rossie also forget how Agatha treated her?

Well, now that [Mother] was a [Goddess] maybe she had fixed the issues she had with Agatha? and that in turn made her happy?

Either way, "Well, nothing for it. Let's go I guess?" Elizabeth would deal with that as it came.

For now, they had a taxi to take, they were returning to the MPI.

"Back to school, we go," Rossie said turning back to their apartment, only the barest of things remained there, mostly things they couldn't take or wouldn't make sense they took.

Home appliances, 55' TV screen, furniture, rugs, nondescript barrels...Normal stuff.

"I will miss this apartment," And like that they left behind the place they had spent almost a year and some.

They could still visit it of course, in some way her apartment within the ruined city was like this one, but it would be different. It wouldn't be the same, but alas.

They had things to do, and Elizabeth wanted to move forward, she was dreading already what would come after dealing with the test...

If she...No, when she made it into the school it would be the start of a new year. And they would need to deal with a second event...

The meeting of the staff with the guardians of the students...Aka their parents...

Aka...Rossie's parents...

Maybe she should fail the exam after all...

It would be easier that way.
