23. Sacrifice to Get What You Want

-kurrureung!

A bolt of lightning cracked open the cave, letting in light and revealing the sky. It was still raining outside.

-kwaak!

And as if waiting for us, a large number of monsters rushed towards us.

I thought that destroying the mother of monsters would be the end of it, but is it literally only stopping evolution?

Ruzef who sealed the mother of monsters or spirits mass has yet to wake up. This may be our last fight with monsters.

Enoch and Kayden ran with Diego and Ruzef on their backs, respectively. I ran after them and loaded my flare gun.

I pulled the hammer down, looked back at the swarming monsters, and pulled the trigger.

-pish-boom-boom!

Seeing the monsters burst into flames as they lunged for us, I reloaded again. I’m almost out of ammo, and that’s a problem.

Eunji, wrapped around my body, spewed fire at the monsters that had gotten so close.

-pow!

-kuwak!

A couple of bizarrely shaped monsters fell apart. I thanked Eunji and ran forward again.

I couldn’t see where the helpful fireflies had gone, and as we ran, we were greeted by an empty field with no end in sight.

“I hope you survive, Meg. It’s kind of a gamble? Let’s just say it’s fun. Try your best here, on Alea Island.”

Alea Island.

In the first place, animals and monsters do not belong to Alea. This is because gambling and luck only apply to humans.

“You know that monsters roam this island, right?”

“They weren’t here from the beginning.”

“……what?”

“At first, they were all ordinary creatures. But they gradually evolved.”

“The monsters?”

“Yeah.”

That’s why Jenas couldn’t control the monster’s evolution. According to Jenas, monsters are also mutations in Alea’s system.

If so, the spirits must have gotten what they wanted to some extent, and they even managed to evolve monsters. I wonder how much resentment and grudge have they accumulated.

Well, it might be possible if it’s accumulated over a thousand years.

I wonder what the end goal of this experiment is. Given the story of Kayden’s childhood experiments, it seems unlikely that this is simply an experiment planned by Jenas and Anata.

And I don’t think it was for their own personal gain.

With that thought, I reloaded my flare gun. Then I lowered the hammer and pulled the trigger, firing at the approaching monsters.

-boom!

“Shit, I don’t see a way,” Kayden said impatiently.

Above our heads, the cave was crumbling and huge boulders were falling.

-boom!

We ended up surrounded by monsters. We could kill them, but there was no end in sight. Where the hell did they come from?

“Margaret, be careful,” said Enoch, carrying Diego on his shoulder, pushing me behind his back.

Things are not looking too good.

I glanced at my remaining ammo. Maybe fourteen or fifteen left.

“Stay behind me, Margaret.”

Dropping Diego to the ground, Enoch drew his sword and stepped toward the monsters. Kayden did the same, dropping Ruzef to the ground and drawing his dagger.

“Stay here.”

He also faced monsters with his dagger.

Eunji, draped around my waist, slithered down to the ground and stood guard in front of Ruzef and Diego, breathing fire as the monsters approached.

I was on high alert while holding the flare gun tightly and waiting for the slaying to end, but the monsters kept coming, and there was no end in sight.

It was getting to the point where I was exhausted.

-bam!

A sound overhead made me look up. There was a flying monster. A large bat-like monster flew through the crumbling ceiling.

Damn, that’s ominous……

I pulled the trigger of the flare gun at the bat flying in front of me. The thing is, not only one flying at me.

As expected, they snatched me by the waist.

“Shit…!”

I saw Eunji startled and tried to breathe fire, then stop for fear of hurting me. I slowly moved away from the ground and got higher and higher.

I don’t know how many times I’ve said this, but is it a sin to have mana? Why do monsters like me so much?!

“Margaret!”

The two men came toward me in surprise, but I quickly rose to a height beyond their reach.

And then,

-shoot!!

An arrowhead flew out of nowhere and struck the body of the bat that had snatched me.

“Ahh!”

I squeezed my eyes shut and crashed down, but luckily, someone caught me.

“Young Lady Floné, it’s been a long time, and your greeting is still spectacular.”

His voice was familiar. It was the voice of a man I had forgotten for a long time.

It was none other than Arthdal who caught me.

“Prince Cheekydal?”

As I muttered that with a blank face, Arthdal wrinkled his face.

“It looks like you’re fine.”

I slid out of his arms with a bewildered face.

Arthdal was wearing cargo pants and a black hoodie. It was an outfit that shouldn’t have been so out of place for a pompous crown prince, but he was handsome enough to pull it off.

I think there were supplies around here, and it looks like Arthdal found them.

“Margaret!”

And a woman popped out from behind Arthdal and pulled me into a big hug. It was Yuanna.

Like Arthdal, she was wearing a techwear jumpsuit.

“You’re okay! I knew you would. Thank God,” Yuanna murmured, cupping both my cheeks and scrutinizing my complexion.

But since when did she call me Margaret?

“Margaret!”

“Are you okay?!”

Just then, I heard Enoch and Kayden’s voices in the distance. Surrounded by monsters, they were too busy protecting Diego and Ruzef to come this way.

Looking at them, Yuanna smiled. “There is a way out, but first we have to get them on board, right?”

With that, Yuanna pulled out an axe from her backpack.

‘……wait, an axe?’

She seemed like a completely different person.

She had many questionable corners before, but she always took a step-back attitude, but now she is more proactive than ever.

She looked back at Arthdal and said, “Our prince is wounded, so just stay here. I’ll go, just cover me with the crossbow.”

Wounded? Come to think of it, Arthdal’s body was covered in wounds. Seeing that Arthdal, who has a very strong ego, doesn’t deny it, it looks pretty serious.

He caught me when I fell and made it worse. Feeling unnecessarily sorry for him, I asked him to cover me from behind.

“Let’s go together. I have a weapon too,” I said, double-checking my remaining ammo.

Yuanna smiled and nodded. “Let’s go.”

Killing monsters with an axe must be very difficult, because you need to have a strong grip.

-puck.

I was speechless for a moment as I watched Yuanna smash her axe into the monster’s head. A saint killing a monster with an axe. That’s quite a sight.

But I had no time to appreciate it. I spun around to face the monsters and pulled the trigger.

-pow! pow!

Well, that doesn’t sound like something I’d say as a noble young lady who shoots monstres with flares.

After killing another one, Yuanna paused to catch her breath.

Then she said, “Even subconsciously, I thought of the old you, and I thought I had to win over you to keep my heart at ease until I escaped.”

Huh? What is she talking about?

“I apologize for my rude words, but don’t you think we’re better partners than that?”

After saying that, Yuanna looked at me and smiled pretty. Before long, she swung her axe again, severing the torso of the rushing centipede-like monster.

No way…… She remembers what happened before the regression?

“…if you had such strength, why did you just run away all this time?” I asked Yuanna as I ran toward Enoch and Kayden.

“I didn’t have any weapons. I’m not good enough to kill a monster with a harpoon, and I don’t know how to use a sword,” she answered, wiping the monster’s black blood from her cheek.

-puck!

-poof!

The sound of Yuanna’s axe and the explosion of the flares I’d fired followed in quick succession. Yuanna and I paused, gasping for breath.

Enoch and Kayden were in sight.

“I was a person who lived a low life. There’s nothing I haven’t tried. A noble saint? That’s nonsense.”

-shoot.

Yuanna, who said so, pulled my hand and pushed me behind her. A monster lunged for my spot, and an arrow from afar pierced its head.

I turned my head and saw Arthdal in the distance, aiming a crossbow, then put it down and waved at us. He must have gotten that crossbow from the supply box.

“Margaret!”

Enoch ran over and pulled us the other way.

Kayden, who had been fighting the monsters with only his dagger, stopped and ran to me, examining my complexion, then frowning at Yuanna.

“Where did the Saintess come from?”

“Is now the time for such idle conversation?”

After answering Kayden’s bewildered question with a gasp, Yuanna pointed to Diego and Ruzef.

“You two run with those two men on your back. We’ll deal with the monsters in the front and back. Don’t say it’s dangerous. There’s no other way.”

Yuanna spoke forcefully, and then she pushed Enoch and Kayden on their backs to carry Diego and Ruzef.

Eunji came up to me and quickly slithered up my body, resting his head on my shoulder.

I quickly added after Yuanna’s words before Enoch and Kayden said something else.

“That’s right, Prince Cheekydal– no, I mean, Prince Arthdal is covering us over there, and we’ve got Eunji, so you guys just run, okay?”

I loaded the flare gun and looked at Yuanna. She nodded when our eyes met.
