Chapter 18 (Part 5)

“He’s not going to come,” Duan Ling adds.

Helan Jie has stopped engaging him in talk. All he’s doing is studying Duan Ling as he hangs in the air.

On the other hand, Duan Ling is staring up at the magnificent river of stars above, mumbling to himself, “I know he won’t come.”

“So you do know him after all.”

“Once I’m dead, take this thing I’m carrying and give it to him. It’s in a pocket under my lapel.”

Helan Jie’s eyebrows come together dubiously. The truth is, Duan Ling doesn’t actually know who the Nameless One is. He just wants to see if he can try to trick Helan Jie.

Helan Jie falls for it just as Duan Ling expected he would, and slowly approaches him along the branch. Duan Ling is acting as though he really does know this Nameless One character so that Helan Jie would take the golden centipede from him. As long as he gets bitten, Duan Ling is saved.

But after moving to the tip of the branch, Helan Jie suddenly changes his mind and retreats.

Duan Ling asks, “What is it?”

Helan Jie gives him a frosty laugh. “I nearly fell for your plot. Since you’re Wu Du’s lackey you must be carrying some sort of trickery on your person.”

Duan Ling says to himself, how come you’re so smart, and as he’s just turned his head to try to talk him into getting the gold bead again, he notices that a man in black has appeared — silently, and inconspicuously, he’s crept behind Helan Jie, a sword shimmering with cold light in his hand, its end pointing at Helan Jie’s back.

Helan Jie is backing away from Duan Ling, and as he does he’s moving himself towards the point of that sword inch by inch.

Duan Ling’s heart beat madly in his chest. Is this the Nameless one he spoke of?! Come on, use your sword! Use your sword already!

Helan Jie is about to say something else when the Nameless One behind him makes his move.

The long sword flashes so fast through the air it becomes a streak of light, stardust flickering in its blade, going for Helan Jie’s back like swift lightning! But in the next instant, Helan Jie lets out a snarl and the sword itself bends into a curve — his body had somehow stopped the blade from going in!

With a sudden motion Helan Jie hooks an arm behind him, and blood bursts forth from the Nameless One’s abdomen and chest. Then leaping onto the pine he turns his right-hand hook in a slash towards the Nameless One.

Somehow unable to take Helan Jie’s life in one surprise attack, the Nameless One waves his long sword in a flash of open arcs — three feigns that envelop Helan Jie’s throat, heart, and lower abdomen. Helan Jie back flips, dodging the one move going for his neck. This time, Duan Ling hears a light screech that sounds like the tip of a sword scratching across metal.

Helan Jie’s robe splits open to reveal soft silver-thread armour beneath! In the space of this dodge, Helan Jie brandishes his hook again and this time blood flies out of the Nameless One’s arm!

As he prays for the Nameless One to win this fight, Duan Ling tries his best to save himself. He swings up and up, attempting with all his might to catch the branch with his legs.

Yet while he’s trying to do that, Helan Jie has taken one step onto the pine tree — the pine tree curves again and Duan Ling ends up once more beneath the rope, back in midair. The Nameless One is in pursuit, his sword clanging against the hook and in second he’s exchanged five moves with Helan Jie. Instead of letting him get closer, Helan Jie is trying to put some distance between them. The Nameless One stops at the bottom of the tree, soil at its roots loosening and falling off the rock; at any minute the tree could separate from the rock and get tossed into the abyss.

Helan Jie flashes him a sinister smile. “Go on, step up here. What are you afraid of? Who’s this kid to you anyway?”

The pine tree is producing a crackling sound. Duan Ling struggles in midair and nearly catches the branch with his legs several times, but with the Nameless One advancing and Helan Jie retreating, the pine tree keeps bending and he keeps falling off again.

Blood is dripping onto him from above, smelling of rotting fish. Helan Jie’s iron hook is covered in poison! Having failed to kill him in a sneak attack, the Nameless One has already lost the initiative, and now that Helan Jie has poisoned him his movements have clearly slowed. Meanwhile the crack in the branch is growing bigger and bigger. The Nameless One’s blood is getting everywhere, but he isn’t running as he pours his strength in every move of his sword. The pine tree makes another sound as though breaking apart, Helan Jie takes a flying leap, and flipping around he flies over the Nameless One’s head.

The Nameless One immediately turns and runs at Helan Jie. Duan Ling lets out a cry at the top of his lungs — with that one step down on the branch Helan Jie used to make the leap, the tree trunk nearly snaps into two. However, the Nameless One seems to be staking his life on this fight, and his long sword heads towards Helan Jie with the force and speed of a raging storm.

Hold on a bit longer! Duan Ling finally manages to get his legs wrapped around the tree trunk, and he unties the other end of the rope. Now the pine tree has nearly snapped into two, and rocks are rolling down continuously. The fathomless abyss is right behind him.

The Nameless One hops onto the rock, sword colliding with Helan Jie’s hook so hard sparks fly out from the impact, forcing him backwards, and each of his moves is thrusting towards a fatal point. But Helan Jie’s eyes have gone crazed with fighting; he’s disregarding every blow the Nameless One’s sword deals on his body as he throws himself forward, and the iron hook again scratches the Nameless One’s palm.

The Nameless One grunts as the hook goes through his palm, and with this injured hand he pushes Helan Jie hard against the cliff side, hook and all, but Helan Jie grabs his collar and throws him against the ground instead. The sword has flown out of his hand, so the Nameless One grabs a rock and smashes it against Helan Jie’s temple. Blood is suddenly flying everywhere. Helan Jie bangs his head against the Nameless One’s forehead like a trapped beast, blood spurting forth from both of them.

As Duan Ling flips himself onto the tree, he notices the Nameless One turning his head to look at him. Helan Jie’s hook is around his neck, but he’s struggling to meet Duan Ling’s gaze, his eyes filled with alarm — run!

A sharp pain grips Duan Ling’s heart, and consequences be damned, he steps onto the fractured tree trunk and rushes towards the cliff. But just then, Helan Jie lets go of the Nameless One, and spins to kick towards Duan Ling — he’s going to kill Duan Ling in front of the Nameless One!

One of Duan Ling’s feet has already made it onto the cliff, but he comes face to face with Helan Jie’s kick, connecting with his chest so hard he flies back towards the tree once more, towards the abyss.

“Ah—!” Duan Ling cries out, his back crashing against the pine tree. The trunk finally snaps, taking several rocks covered in lichen along with it, falling into the abyss with Duan Ling.

In that very instant, he hears the thudding hoofbeats of a warhorse.

That singularly familiar silhouette is diving towards him from the torrential Silver River above, swooping down from luminous waters, a dark shadow covered in starlight.

Wanlibenxiao—!

“Dad.” Duan Ling’s lips move imperceptibly, his body suspended in midair, and he opens his arms wide. Finally, it’s going to be all over.

Wanlibenxiao crashes into Helan Jie so hard he flies out the other way, and then the tall man on the horse steps on the stirrup and leaps out towards the air-borne Duan Ling, somehow promising to share his life, and to share his death.

In midair, Wu Du wraps one arm around Duan Ling’s waist and shouts, “Don’t move!”

Wu Du abruptly pulls Duan Ling into his arms and steps onto the pine tree.

One jump by stepping on the trunk takes him one foot higher.

Another rock falls; Wu Du puts his lightness arts “stairs to heaven” to use, stepping hard on the falling rock.

They rise another foot higher.

Duan Ling’s pupils contract sharply.

Wu Du takes quick steps at the edge of the precipice, and walks on air for what seems like a thousand feet.

His last step is still on a rock in the air, and as he steps onto it he spins like a spinning top; with the strength and skills he’s been cultivating his whole life, Wu Du turns over in the air with Duan Ling, the ends of his robe rippling, and with a flip through the open air they land on the edge of the precipice.

He lands on the edge, and in the same breath Helan Jie shakes his crippled arm to employ his concealed weapon. Wu Du abruptly puts himself in front of Duan Ling, and with his right hand he pulls out the Lieguangjian to slice through the rope around Duan Ling’s wrist, while his left palm turns to reveal the magnets attached to his knuckle daggers. In the silvery sound of metal hitting metal Wu Du captures all of the tiny needles Helan Jie’s tossed out to rain on them, and with a shout with qi behind it, he pushes them back out, “Go—!”

The needles quickly fly out in the other direction to land on Helan Jie’s body, but his silver armour stops all of them. Helan Jie backs away to take shelter, escaping into the wilderness.

Duan Ling gasps for breath while Wu Du stares apprehensively in the direction Helan Jie made his escape. The two of them fall quiet for quite a while before Wu Du turns around to meet Duan Ling’s eyes. Neither says anything at all. Wu Du grabs Duan Ling’s arm and pulls him into his embrace.

At the edge of the precipice, they wrap their arms tightly around each other.

Duan Ling leans into Wu Du’s shoulder, and once again, he hears the beating of Wu Du’s heart.

This heartbeat makes him think that feeling of safety he used to have with his head pillowed on his father’s arm as he drifted into dreams through countless nights; think of the way Li JIanhong’s chest rose and fell as he breathed; think of the army outside Shangjing, the hooves of a hundred thousand horses beating against the ground that sent a thunderous rumble through the earth; think of riding on a horse with him, crossing the grass plains the great goose call home, towards a steady drumming in the distance.

It’s as though he’s still alive, right here in front of him. He is him, and yet he is not him; when Duan Ling raises his head to look at him it’s as though he can see his father, but he’s Wu Du — another person who’d protect him without considering the costs, protect him without any reason why.

If my dad’s still alive he would be so grateful to you. Duan Ling’s lips open and close, but he doesn’t actually manage to say anything.

Wu Du strokes Duan Ling’s face with his thumb without a single word, and he’s at a loss at what to do all of a sudden — he wants to say something. But Duan Ling is refusing to let him go, his arms wrapping tighter around Wu Du, burying his face into Wu Du’s shoulder.

“That’s enough …” Wu Du says awkwardly, “Someone is watching us … some—who’s there?!”

Duan Ling also just remembers, and he turns around immediately.

Beneath the rock, there is nothing at all; the Nameless One who was there before has vanished.

“I returned to Tongguan, at first.”

With the horse’s reins in one hand, and Duan Ling’s hand in another, not having let it go since, Wu Du walks downwards on the mountain path. “I returned to Tongguan, at first, and found the estate empty of people. So I went looking for Yao Jing. When I heard what she said, I knew things weren’t right and rushed out of the city looking for you. The treasure cave was crawling with guards, and I ran into a Tangut patrol outside — they said you were captured, and Shang Leguan had gone looking for you all over the mountains. I was out of options so I took Benxiao up the mountain. I just happened to see someone hanging on a cliff at a great distance and rushed over. It’s all thanks to this horse showing me the way — otherwise I’d have been too late.”

Duan Ling stops walking, and wraps his arms around Benxiao’s head. Next to them, Wu Du says, “When the late emperor attacked Tongguan back then, he took this mountain path before. Benxiao somehow still remembers the way.”

“Yeah.” Duan Ling stares at Benxiao and begins to smile; it’s a smile full of pain. “I’ll have to thank it somehow.”

“Why didn’t you say you’ll have to thank me?” Wu Du is unhappy now.

Duan Ling gives Wu Du a glance. “What sort of favour do you want?”

“Fa—favour?” Wu Du’s expression freezes all of a sudden. Duan Ling leans in and starts rubbing his head against him again, and Wu Du hastily pulls him off of himself. “Behave. Let’s go let’s go, we’re not even done with work yet. What’s even in that head of yours?!”

Duan Ling bursts out laughing. Wu Du helps him up on the horse and says, “They say only the Lis can ride this horse. It’s probably not throwing you off ‘cause it respects me. You best be careful though.”

“Sure, sure.” In his head Duan Ling repeats what Wu Du just said: only the Lis can ride this horse. It’s probably not throwing you off 'cause it respects me. You best be careful.

It’s been a difficult night for Duan Ling and he’s already a bit sleepy. He leans back against Wu Du’s chest and can’t help himself from burying his face into his chest.

“Stop that. I haven’t even lectured you yet. Coming out here to do something so dangerous … you know you should be scared now?”

“Yeah.” Duan Ling breathes in the smell on Wu Du’s body, not wanting to part from him, his nose filled up with the travel-worn scent of dust and earth, but it puts him truly at ease. Benxiao canters steadily over the mountain paths, while a brilliant river of stars stretches all the way to the ends of Qinling up overhead.

With Wu Du by his side, it feels as though there’s nothing in the world he could be afraid of; this feeling has once more quietly returned to his heart.
