Yang Dalang immediately followed the direction that Miao He was pointing at. He quickly spotted clusters of shrubs dotted with little balls of red fruit. When he approached the plant for a close inspection, he shook his head at Miao He, “This is a snake berry. You can’t eat it because it’s a restorative material.”

“Medicinal material?” Miao He also walked towards the plant and began to dig, “Is it expensive?”

“There are many mountains here, so it’s not.”

“Doesn’t matter. I’ll just pick a little bit of it.”

Miao He reached for the roots specifically and uprooted them. This way, he didn’t need the seeds to be withered as he could plant them in the living soil directly.

Not intending to stop him, Yang Dalang just looked around the area. Suddenly, he raised his hand and pointed, “That type of fruit can be consumed. It’s sweet.”

‘Oh, those are raspberries. Wait a minute!’

“It’s called a raspberry, and it’s perfectly safe to eat. Furthermore, the pharmacy accepts it.” Yang Dalang walked over to the plant and imitated Miao He as he uprooted the plant from its roots. He recalled that the little ger mentioned that he wanted to take it home to plant.

Thinking of certain things, Miao He pursed up his lips and smiled, “I know this. Isn’t it used to cure impotence?”

Raspberry juice was widely rumoured for this particular reason and occasionally overruled the internet by its rumours. Though said to be very powerful and effective, Miao He didn’t know for sure whether it was genuine or fake.

Startled, Yang Dalang paused for a second but didn’t say anything.

“After we get back home and plant it in living soil, you can eat some of it if you want.” Miao He said, laughing.

And to be honest, when he delivered this sentence, Miao He was purely cracking a witty remark. When boys got along, it’s unavoidable for them to bring up sentences like this. However, Miao He seemed to forget his current identity as a ger, just as he would occasionally overlook that the original host had an unusual temperament.

With that said, Yang Dalang’s face immediately tensed up.

Unaware of the sudden strangeness of the man beside him, Miao He proceeded to dig out the snake berries and raspberries contentedly and even urged Yang Dalang to resume his treasure hunting.

The mountain they went to was much colder than the plains they came from, making the woods smell more earthy and fragrant. When the sun shone through the multitude of crevices in the densely packed trees, a plethora of golden beams formed, illuminating the entire forest with warmth. The light penetrated the tree leaves, making them almost transparent, resembling billions of enchanting emeralds suspended above their heads. Miao He, a modern man at heart, felt awakened and energized, even though he’d been panting profusely earlier as he took everything he saw in wonder.

Around noon, Miao He took out the bingzis he had prepared beforehand. He offered some over to Dalang and refreshed himself as he drank the cool water. As they finished eating, Yang Dalang stood up and took him to the mountain spring.  Regardless of the differences and perks, this world was far better than in modern times. This was the real treasure that should be cared for, the natural and harmless nature. Even the air felt so much better and clean.

As they were resting, Miao He took the opportunity to count their spoils of war. Until recently, they had dug up snake berries, raspberries and later discovered a mulberry; in total, they had collected more than a dozen different types of plants. Aside from that, a few sour grape vines with no fruits and a few wild pomegranates were unearthed. They’ve also scoured palm trees, persimmon trees, hawthorn trees, pear trees, and peach trees, as well as some chestnuts. However, because it was still the beginning of spring, the flowering period had not yet begun, and there were no ripe fruits to be found, so Miao He could only watch helplessly.

As for the medicinal materials, in contrast to what Miao He was expecting, some accidents sprouted.

The majority of the medicinal materials Yang Dalang was looking for were flowers. Including Chinese bellflower, leopard lily, and yellow celery. Aside from the leopard lily, an orange-red five-petal flower, the other two were painted in stunning, one-of-a-kind purple hues that would look marvellous in a courtyard. These three flowers were notable for their unusual dual-purpose anthers. Aside from concocting medicine, the three flowers could also be sun-dried and ground to produce cosmetic face powder. The leaves of the bellflower could be consumed as vegetables, as well.

Among the three of them, the Chinese yellow celery owned the highest selling price. Yang Dalang informed him that the flowers only grew in small numbers and took a long time to completely bloom. So Miao He dug up all the yellow celery he could find to bring back home.

In contrast to the flowers, the subsequent discovery of medicinal materials was like hitting the nail on the head. And only one type was discovered: Codonopsis pilosula, dangshen that was also known as the poor man’s ginseng. It thrived in shady, crisp environments provided by the densely packed trees, allowing the poor man’s ginseng to grow in various areas throughout the forest. Not only that, recognizing one would need a great deal of effort and vision. Furthermore, despite not being as effective as ginseng, it had a significant impact on healing and nourishing the qi, as well as the expulsion of congested fluids in the lungs.

Calculating the number of the dug poor man’s ginseng on hand, while deducting a few of it, could still earn about four to five dimes. When Miao He realized how much he’d get, he felt that the soreness in his legs was insignificant in comparison to his gains. He opened his mouth to speak, wanting to share this, but the words hung on his lips, unsaid, as he noticed Yang Dalang’s sombre expression. Dalang quickly placed his forefinger on top of his lips, gesturing for silence.

“Be quiet. There’s a situation.”

Miao He stiffened, even his breathing became softer.

Yang Dalang stood up quickly and picked up Miao He without informing him beforehand. Miao He nearly yelped because of the sudden movement. Fortunately, he hadn’t. After picking him up, Yang Dalang then raised Miao He’s body till his lower half could reach the branch union of the tree in front of them. They chose a large tree covered in dense foliage to rest on, where two or three people could stand atop the thick trunk.

Yang Dalang used his eyes to signal Miao He to climb up. Miao He didn’t dare waste time, with his calf trembling a little, he immediately climbed up as he was told. Moments later, he witnessed Yang Dalang retrieve another mountain knife from his basket. The blade was entirely slender, with the tip extremely sharp. Hunting wasn’t part of today’s plan. Dalang might not have brought a bow and arrow, but he simply would not let himself be weaponless.

The knife possessed a slightly longer blade that could intimidate the beasts who threatened to attack. Yang Dalang skillfully whirled the blade around his hand as he glanced at Miao He, who had a look of anxiety clearly written on his face. Seeing him that nervous, Dalang made a soothing gesture to pacify the little ger that everything would be okay.

Miao He, a weak chicken who had never experienced such a scene in his life, was unexpectedly comforted by the imposing aura of the man who seemed to have everything under his control. In any case, no matter how worried and anxious he was, the only thing could do to now was to obediently close his mouth tightly and to maintain absolute stillness and silence.

Beneath him, Yang Dalang slowly tilted his head as he listened attentively.

In the woods that looked as zen as ever, only the soft rustling of the wind blowing atop the treetops, some subtle chirping of the birds, as well as the echoes of insects could be heard.

However, Yang Dalang wasn’t in a hurry, he continued to hold the knife in his hand beneath the trees, guarding, as he waited patiently for any unusual movement.

Patience, brazenness, and carefulness are the most important qualities a hunter must possess.

Until there was a small sound of movement on the left side!

Miao He noticed at last, while Yang Dalang had already fixed his gaze intently on that certain spot early on.

After a while, a pig nose covered in black fur suddenly appeared!

Soon followed by its small ferocious orbs and its thick and solid mane, and then came out the complete structure of an adult wild boar!!

Miao He could not hear nor feel anything, but his heartbeat was raging faster. But, as calm as he was, Yang Dalang didn’t move at all. He stared at the wild boar intently. His right hand held the long knife firmly, as his left hand slowly inched towards the concealed pocket on his side, and took out a small bamboo tube about the thickness of a finger.

The wild boar naturally also noticed Yang Dalang. Suddenly, its four-toed hooves stirred restlessly on the ground, as if it hadn’t decided yet whether or not to rush over.

The next second, the wild boar finally broke into Yang Dalang’s vicinity. If Yang Dalang didn’t move, the wild boar would only assess whether the opponent in front of it was a threat or not. If not, wild boars would not be so idle as to spend their time waiting for threats. They’d likely trample on people right away when they see people. Usually, humans weren’t included in their everyday menu. However, since it’s spring again, these boars were improbable to not be hungry.

Because of this, the two sides faced each other for a while. Observing the other party’s movements.

But at this moment, as if luck wasn’t on their side, a ‘pada’ sound loudly rang out within the forest and coincidentally came from the right side of Yang Dalang.

It sounded like some fruit had fallen down!

This abrupt movement startled the wild boar greatly that it immediately raised its hooves and rushed ragingly towards Yang Dalang.

Miao He couldn’t help but cry out in alarm when he saw the turn of events. In contrast, Yang Dalang remained calm and motionless. Then threw the bamboo tube he held in his left hand quickly and accurately on the path where the wild boar was rushing toward. When the bamboo pipe fell to the ground, it instantly exuded dense smoke mixed with dust above the ground! It just so happened that the grown wild boar rushed into the smoke and dust pollution!

Immediately afterwards, a miserable cry rang out from the boar! After harshly shaking its head from all directions as if to dispel something, he turned around and galloped away decisively!

This shift of events was way too fast, it only happened in mere seconds!

The ‘danger’ in Miao He’s mouth was stuck in his throat, making him choke up!

After the wild boar ran away, Yang Dalang waited another quarter of an hour before letting Miao He descend from the tree.

To say the truth, even if he didn’t sustain any injuries from the daunting experience, Miao He was still somehow traumatized, with his face pallid than usual. After all, he had seen in the news back in his world, that wild boars not only bite people but also bite them to death.

After steadying his heartbeat, Miao He couldn’t help to ask, “What’s in the bamboo tube?”

“A stimulating powder, prepared by the pharmacy.”

“When you hunt, is there anything else that you use besides this?”

Yang Dalang really did find a lot of useful tools. In addition to powder, there were also fire folds, a kind of bamboo tube that emitted flames when the lid was opened. A lasso, knockout drugs, anaesthetics, blow arrows and even nail thorns that were used to throw on the ground.

It turned out that Yang Dalang didn’t just climb up the mountain with only a knife to protect themselves. Miao He felt a little relieved. “Then when you encounter a wild boar, if you’re alone, would you hunt it?”

“Will. Just now, the boar wasn’t that big.”

“Ah? Then why didn’t you today?” ‘I didn’t hide it well enough.’

“I have to send you down the mountain.”

While they were talking, Yang Dalang had his hand on his back basket as he neatly arranged the hunting materials he took out not too long ago and fixed his basket comfortably on his back together with Miao He’s. Then he stretched out his hand to Miao He, “Let’s go back.”

Miao He pursed his lips and did exactly what the man before him said.

‘Suddenly, my heart feels warm and stuffy again.’

  ***

After returning home, taking advantage of the time Yang Dalang was away to exchange food with Second Aunt Yang, Miao He busied himself as he took turns in burying the berries or medicinal flowers he first grabbed onto in the living soil.

Then all of the flowers and plants had been successfully transferred into the new soil. There’s no need to wait for these plants to germinate and mature, as Miao He merely intended to take advantage of the divine power of living soil to transfer some vitality onto the plants and to prevent it from withering for the next few days. And looking at the plants’ transformation from wilted to lively, it seemed that this method that only required a short time to work seemed pretty good.

Simply staring at the living soil, Miao He instantly became bored.

‘When we went out earlier, I was protected again.’ The image of the man with his back to the tree flashed through his mind. Miao He didn’t feel anything at the time, but when he recalled the scene, he realized that Dalang was immovable. On the other hand, he held many secrets and did everything secretly. Miao He didn’t trust others easily and was afraid of being betrayed and harmed. After all, he was a selfish person with a lot of secrets in his heart.

The plants embedded in the farming field were arranged haphazardly and in no particular order. The flowers and vegetables were planted together with no dividers as if they were all carelessly planted. In fact, Miao He planted them purposefully in this way. With this, if he wanted to use the living soil to grow something, he could just bury it within the disorganized vegetable field, and it wouldn’t be too conspicuous. Just like the dangshen he had dug back earlier and replanted, he’d be required to harvest the seeds and plant the new ones tomorrow. Even if the seeds sprouted new leaves soon, Miao He was convinced that if he wasn’t attentive enough to remember it correctly, he wouldn’t be able to find it the next day. All of these operations were required in the future to conceal the divine ability of the living soil.

The thought of having these motives, but still calmly immersed himself under the protection of Yang Dalang, stabbed Miao He’s heart with guilt.

Or, just—

During this time, the door bolt clicked loudly. Miao He clapped his hands off the soil and reached out to touch Dabai, who was rolling beside the cultivated soil. He stood up and walked to the front yard, intending to greet Dalang’s return. However, it wasn’t only Dalang who came back. A man whose physique was relatively short compared to Yang Dalang stood beside him. His face was framed by thick brows that sat atop his large eyes. He had fair and correctly positioned facial features, but he was a little darker.

I saw him slung an arm over Yang Dalang’s shoulder, freely spewing any jokes and unaffected by Yang Dalang’s indifferent and calm expression. It appeared that the two had a very close relationship.

Seeing this scene, Miao He suddenly remembered that he had previously doubted the possibility of it happening.
