Two days later, Miao He and Yang Dalang set out for town at first light, carrying their respective baskets on their backs. After all, a single trip on foot to town would take around a shichen, or roughly two hours in total.

{T/N: 时辰 shíchen – one of the 12 two-hour periods of the day; so half a shichen is equivalent to an hour}

Although donkey carts manned by coaches were stationed at the village’s entrance for convenient transportation, they also charged a per-person transportation fee. Due to their practicality, Miao He and Yang Dalang’s baskets were only loaded with lightweight medicinal plants. Even if Miao He snuck a bag of sliced dangshen into Yang Dalang’s basket, the latter would not notice because it was not as weighty as the prey Yang Dalang usually sought.  And, occasionally, items that were too heavy to carry had to be transported to alleviate the strain.  As a result, when you return from shopping in town, buying a fare would be more cost-effective. The two resumed their trek after Miao He insisted on not using the donkey carts.

Not long after they got off on the road, they came across an acquaintance. The only way to go from Miaojia Village to town was to use this route. As a result, it was almost unavoidable to not meet another person and end up travelling together.

“Brother He!” Miao Min, the original host’s best friend, ran towards them with apparent delight the moment he saw Miao He. “You’re also heading to the town. That’s great, A-niang and I are also going to run some errands. We’re going to buy some cloth and make it into a dress. If you have time, you can come to the cloth shop and lend your good eyes to me.”

Not far behind Miao Min, a well-known skinny woman with fine wrinkles etched on her face stood there. She was holding a six or seven-year-old girl in her hand. The fu ren gazed at them with her lips pursed up in a bit of dissatisfaction. And her eyes looked at the figure of Miao He with such vigilance as if she felt that her proximity to the ger would be a stain to her reputation.

Miao He replied, “You must heed your mother’s advice though. What vision do I have with those things?”

Despite their refusal, Miao Min persisted in persuading them. “I notice you look good in your current attire, so I suppose it’ll be alright. You must come over and help me look at it, ah.  The clothes store is not far from the town’s main street, nor from the other stores. By the way, why are you going to town today, Brother He?” He looked at Yang Dalang, who was behind Miao He, right after he finished speaking.

“There’s a shortage of seasoning at home, so Dalang and I will go over and purchase those we need.”

“So there should be time, right?” Miao Min said, unwilling to give up.

Miao He contemplated it for some time. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to use this heaven-sent excuse to be separated from Yang Dalang for a while. “Is it alright?” he asked Yang Dalang as he turned around.

Yang Dalang simply nodded and left it at that.

Miao Min smiled excitedly as he was satisfied. “That’s fantastic! After we set foot in town, we’ll also be busy shopping first before going to the cloth shop. Brother He should remember to look for me in the clothing store, ah!”

When Miao Min eventually came to his mother’s side, his mother chastised him with a few harsh words.  A few words, such as “humiliation” and “you must pay attention”, were carried by the wind towards the ears of those around. Consequently, Yang Dalang, who just resumed walking, suddenly halted in his steps.

“Get a bottle. Drink water.”

Miao He initially thought that this act of Dalang wasn’t just for a show on the road. It could be seen that Miao Min and his mother were gradually moving away, knowing that this person was silently taking care of his ger again. Miao He looked into Dalang’s eyes and suddenly thought that the original host should be able to stay with him for a little more. It’d be hard for the original host’s feelings to remain unchanged in the face of Dalang’s unexpected silent coaxing.

The two people, once again, continued their journey on the road. Fortunately, the path was primarily flatlands. A brief break in the half a shichen wouldn’t significantly affect their time spent travelling. The moment their legs were becoming slightly tinged with soreness, the town was also a few meters away from them.

As they passed past the gates, a straight walkway lined with clustered stones greeted them. Miao He and Yang Dalang strolled for a quarter of an hour before reaching the town’s busiest street. The lively atmosphere shook Miao He out of his exhausted spirits and became exhilarated as he watched the people’s enthusiastic interactions.

The town was larger than Miao He imagined, and there were many vendors along the sides with all their products laid out in glory. After looking for it in his memory, Miao He realized that Miaoshui Town was the largest town with an area of a hundred miles squared. This large-scale land was because the previous emperor had issued an order to open a canal just behind the boundary of this town. This inadvertently connected the larger county town downstream, making this place gradually become the town’s hinterland, which was also why it was bustling with lively noises every day.

Therefore, it was entirely typical to frequently see rice grain shops, seasonings stalls, pharmacies, boutiques, and both iron shops and jewellery stores along the streets. Besides private schools, teahouses, restaurants, music halls, and gambling shops, there was also a public amusement theatre where they presented the county town’s cultural tradition and education.

The town’s main street was on the east side of the three pathways that housed the specific things people desired in their life. Turning east on the three-way fork in the road would lead to the liveliest market in all streets. Fresh varieties of vegetables, fruits, meat, kinds of seafood, and so on could be purchased there. On the west side of the fork road, a collection of items used mainly by the big guys was displayed on the entrances of several shops facing each other. These included weaponry from the iron shops, woodworkings from the carpentry stores, rice granary, mill, and many more. Furthermore, entering the middle street of the town’s street division, one could see the best business buildings standing haughtily, such as the clothing shops, pharmacies, tea restaurants, and so much more.

Private houses were scattered all over the town, except for the northern area. That area was solely reserved for certain people of status, and it only accommodated courtyards with the best conditions. Their neighbourhood was truly notable as it was always devoid of any impurities, it was also quiet, and some catchers patrolled the streets regularly. With its apparent differences from the rest of the town, it must be a high-end residential area.

Comparing the memory he had in his mind with what he was currently seeing before his eyes, Miao He couldn’t help thinking. How could he sell the vegetables that were already wrapped inside his basket? Where was it sold? And what level of customers should he sell it to?

As he was preoccupied with his thoughts, Miao He blankly followed Yang Dalang to a drugstore. Being one who frequented the drugstore for months now, Yang Dalang became a familiar face to see inside. As soon as he entered the store, the staff who were busy arranging something didn’t notice him, and the pudgy and stout shopkeeper was the first one to greet him.

“Hey, isn’t this Dalang? What goods are you bestowing at the store today? Oh right, the snake you left in our care had been successfully purchased. An old doctor once came in and strolled around the store. When his eyes spotted the snake display on the counters, he grabbed it immediately and did not let it go throughout the entire time he spent here. I’ll count the money for you later, and also, if you have any goods inside your basket, then be sure to visit us first, ah.”

“Okay,” Besides that, Yang Dalang said nothing anymore. He swiftly removed the basket slung on his back and took out the carefully wrapped dangshen slices made by Miao He. Then he directly spread it open on top of the counter cabinet.

At first glance, the shopkeeper was instantly horrified. “Ah, why are they all sliced? You know, this store is not particularly keen on accepting goods that were sliced beforehand, though you haven’t given us whole plants before. However, we still forbid it. After all, if there is something wrong with how the medicinal plants are sliced, then it could easily affect its medicinal properties,” he said. While taking a piece of the dangshen, scrutinizing it, then smelling and licking it.

Miao He, standing beside Yang Dalang, had his eyes wide open as he watched there with nervousness peaking behind his eyelashes.

He didn’t want to slice it either. But, he only had that exceptionally large dangshen on hand. So if it wasn’t cut into sections, wouldn’t it be easy to notice its strangeness? Hence, Miao He had to decisively cut them all up and placed them into Yang Dalang’s basket. In addition to the original dangshens they dug from the mountains, he also mixed a few spices of the improved breed of dangshens.

“It depends on how much you offer it to me, about how many I pick up. Otherwise, this quality… wait a minute, this, this quality is extremely good?! Lemme see? This piece too! Also this! And this, this one too, and this piece!”

The shopkeeper’s eyes were indeed incisive and landed on Miao He in passing. “The colour of these dangshens represents the year, and its flavour represents its purity!! These slices are simply top quality! You, you really have such good luck. How can such a superior quality dangshen be encountered by you!!”

After he had just finished his excited outburst, the shopkeeper beat his chest again and said, “This is why you mustn’t cut it!! Otherwise, it’d be hard to sell these cut-up pieces as ginseng! There is definitely a price to pay!!”

Yang Dalang’s brows furrowed when he heard it. Thinking about it carefully, he didn’t have any recollection of such a good impression that he had dug out special-looking dangshens. Noticing this, Miao He quickly jumped into the conversation to condemn himself. “It’s all my fault ah! I’ve become really meddlesome, to think that I only wanted to sell this better. What should I do?”

Sure enough, Yang Dalang was naturally interrupted, and his focus changed. He turned around and comforted the little ger. “It’s okay. It’d still be exchanged with money.”

“Yeah, yeah. You don’t have to worry, little brother. In short words, if you have this kind of quality in the future, then you must come and sell it here ah! Also, please, remember to not cut it!”

In the past, the original host had too few opportunities to visit the town and more so to pharmacies. The shopkeeper seemed to not know who the original host was, so his attitude towards Miao He also had the same cordiality he treated other people.

Miao He smiled in relief. “So it’s like this ah. Thank you, shopkeeper. I’ll work hard with Dalang to dig more in the future,” he said.

After that, Yang Dalang unloaded out the other medicinal materials such as raspberries. Then, he waited for a bit to let the shopkeeper calculate the total amount together with previous earnings from the purchased snake. In the end, to everyone’s surprise, it actually calculated up to a tael of silver and seven dimes!! It was actually double their net worth!!

Miao He’s eyes widened, and he asked in a low voice, “These medicinal materials, how could you sell them at such a high price?”

The shopkeeper heard this whisper and replied with a smile, “Most of the money was from the previous snake exchange. Besides that, the quality of the dangshen is excellent, so it also has a great value. I say that you really are lucky, and not me, the shopkeeper. Oh, I’m not talking nonsense. By looking at your appearance as a little ger. Hey, aren’t you the one Yang Dalang married?”

A ger who could talk like this to the big man beside him and could also dig out into the same basket of the man’s, one didn’t need to ask. This must be Dalang’s ger.

It took a long time for Miao He to realize that he had been made fun of openly, so he could only give a hollow laugh as he hid behind Yang Dalang’s ripped body.

In any case, when he walked out of the drugstore, Miao He felt his shoulders loosen up. And Yang Dalang had witnessed it all. Although there were no smiles on his face, he still took the initiative to hold Miao He’s hand, which was really rare to happen, and said, “Spice shop, let’s go there.”

With money, anyone could have such confidence!

So when they arrived in the seasonings store, Miao He, without the slightest bit of hesitation, purchased sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, and even a little honey. After that, they proceeded to the grain store and bought a bag of white flour and a small pouch of husked rice. Besides purchasing the rapeseed oil he originally planned to get in the oil shop, he also bought a small bottle of lard.

Within the time they spent on purchasing things, the one tael and seven dimes of silver instantly became 60%. Although there was still a bundle of sliced dangshen hidden inside his basket that could be converted to money, Miao He still felt a little heartache as he watched the money they just earned flew away.

But as if the heavens were also helping him, no rapeseed oil came out the moment the container was pumped. The oil store asked their staff to quickly fetch the reserves from the warehouse. And it’d take a quarter of an hour to get the oil reserve, so Miao He had to wait for a quarter of an hour or two before the staff arrived back at the store.

Seeing this, Miao He instantly grabbed onto the opportunity and said, “Is the cloth shop just right on this street? How about I go to the clothing shop right now and find Brother Min, and just come back when the oil staff has arrived. In this way, we could save time and be at home earlier. Today, we bought a lot of things, so we have to take a ride back home. Isn’t it okay to be early?”

The location of the shop was indeed like this. The cloth shop was about a dozen shops north of the oil store, and the pharmacy stood in the middle of the two! There were two two-storey tea houses laid between the oil shop and the pharmacy. Plus, the group of tables and chairs, as well as the cloth strips that were used to attract customers, were enough to cover the line of sight perfectly!

This was simply the best opportunity to sell more dangshen!!

Yang Dalang stared at Miao He’s hopeful eyes. He stayed silent for a few seconds and finally responded in a low voice.

The previous mess that the original host had done in this town, which had been the moment where the host secretly went to the private school just to see a particular person, was utterly forgotten by Miao He. When Yang Dalang gave out his permission, Miao He turned around happily and left. As a result, he didn’t see that Yang Dalang, who was left alone at the store, had a complicated expression as his eyes flashed unknown emotions.

But after the cheerful Miao He scurried away from the grain shop, he cautiously turned his head back to see if Yang Dalang had his gaze fixed on him as he walked. After confirming that there was no such thing, he shook out his nervousness and entered the pharmacy in all seriousness.

“Shopkeeper! Hush, I came here secretly. I still have slices dangshen here to sell. How much do you want to buy?”
