“Hello, Narias. How were your classes?” Ileena asked after giving him a kiss.

“Oh, yeah. They were great,” he answered, but something in his voice said something unusual might’ve happened.

“Did something happen?” Ileena was about to go sit back at the table to continue reading her book, but stayed where she was.

“Well, we had a Field Battle practice training during Instructor Dreknor’s class and…” Narias rubbed the back of his head, looking away.

“Did you get hurt?” Ileena became worried.

“Ah, no, no. I’m fine. It’s just that… we had Flamiris in our team and…” he was still looking away.

“The new transfer student? I see. I’ve heard she’s quite a troublemaker. Anyway, I’m glad you didn’t get hurt,” Ileena let out a sigh of relief before going back to her seat. “By the way, we got permission to go to the Magic Dungeon. We’re going in three days.”

“Three days? Oh, wow. That’s cool. We need to prepare,” Narias became excited.

“Yes. I’ll wait for everyone to get here and then we’ll talk things over,” Ileena opened her notebook to review whatever she had written in it earlier.

The Magic Research student club was preparing for another dungeon run. This time, five members will be going and the goal was to explore the second floor of the Magic Dungeon. If they want to reach and kill the boss monster on the second floor, they will have to discover a Supply Point room or two and stack on supplies. Supplies will be the main issue going deeper into the dungeon, so they will have to stack up on those. The five members who will be going this time will be Narias, Ileena, Flavia, Growly and Emilia. Nicky said she’d rather stay, because she had some studying to do and since Friday was the day when they would be leaving, Vivia said she had to go somewhere during the weekend. When everything was finally decided, the students went to do some training with the little time they still had.

“Do you mind if we train together today, Growly?” Narias asked him.

“Yes. The Tag training?” The Game of Tag was now Growly’s most favorite type of training.

“Ah, actually, I was thinking about something else,” Narias smiled.

“Ok,” Growly tilted his head to the side.

The others picked and chose what kind of training they’ll be doing and with whom, and then went to do it. The few days passed fast, with the last day being the preparations day for the most part. As usual, the group had to meet up with their Guide before going to the dungeon, but they knew who the Guide will be in advance.

“Good morning, Professor Zeanlor,” Narias greeted the teacher.

“Hi,” Growly was with Narias too. They walked together from the dorms.

“Greetings, Mister Talrone, Mister Ferpaw. Good to see you being in high spirits,” the professor greeted the students back.

The girls showed up soon after as well.

“Good morning, Professor Zeanlor. Wow, what a big backpack you have,” Flavia exclaimed, seeing the teacher’s backpack was bigger than hers. Being slim and tall, it made an impression to see how big it actually was. Nobody said it out loud, but there might’ve been one or two students who had a thought cross their minds if Professor Zeanlor was strong enough to carry such a big backpack.

“Yes, one must never neglect the importance of being well prepared before entering the Magic Dungeon,” the professor was lightly amused by Flavia’s comment, but his serious, stoic facial expression didn’t show it. “Now, if you are ready, we can move out.”

“Yes, sir,” Narias responded.

The guards greeted the group politely before opening the gates. Differently from when Ranga was leading the group, no jokes were flying around. A few minutes after everyone passed the huge, metal gate, the party was once again inside the Magic Dungeon.

“Alrighty, let’s head directly for the boss monster and then down to the second floor,” Flavia cheered excitedly. “Narias, lead us using the Zig-Zag method.”

“Zig-Zag?” Karineus Zeanlor became curious upon hearing a new term.

“It’s a name Narias came up with himself, sir,” Ileena was quick to explain it to the teacher.

“Yes. Narias comes up with all kinds of unique names,” Emilia added with a smile.

“Well…” Narias felt like being put on the spot again.

“I see. I will be curious to learn from you, Mister Talrone. Please,” Professor Zeanlor bowed his head lightly, indicating he will now be an observer for the most part.

“Ok, so we will do it like the last time we did. I will try my best to navigate the dungeon using the Zig-Zag method, but the setting of the Magic Dungeon might’ve changed after the last reset, so my method might not take us directly to the boss monster’s lair.” Narias debriefed the group before moving out.

“It’s fine. It shouldn’t have changed too much,” Flavia wasn’t worried about it.

“Is everyone ready?” Narias paused to catch everyone’s confirmation. “Ok, let’s go.”

Since their goal was to get to the second floor of the Magic Dungeon in the least amount of time possible, in addition to stepping up their pace, Narias tried to save time by giving just bare minimum instructions before each monster encounter. They had fought the Fanged Wolves and the Dungeon Crawlers quite a few times now, so everyone knew what they were doing. It wasn’t difficult to take down the monsters and move on to the next room. Besides, all of them were much stronger which helped clear the cave rooms faster too.

It took them a few detours, because the dungeon decided to play a trick on them and the party hit a dead end twice, but they still benefited from it. In one of the rooms Growly uncovered a hidden chest where they found a Soft Steel Ore and the other one had a blue quality Crystalized Mold in it. Even Flavia was happy they hit the dead end the second time. However, the dungeon hasn’t changed too much and the group reached the den of the Whitemane Fanged Wolf before needing to take the long rest.

“Hey, it has four adds this time,” Flavia pointed out.

“Yes, it means it will be stronger than the one we fought last time,” Narias warned everyone.

“It should be piece of cake for us anyway,” Flavia wasn’t bothered by it, but before anyone could say anything she was quick to add an explanation. “I know what to do and I am not as reckless as I used to be, and we’re stronger than before as well. I’m simply pointing out the obvious.”

“Yes… that is true,” Ileena said, adjusting her glasses. She was probably intending to say something else, but she recognized Flavia wasn’t the same person she was before.

“Ok, let’s gather up to discuss how we’ll do it this time,” Narias suggested.

All things considered, the most effective way to fight the Whitemane Fanged Wolf was to deal with the adds first, but Narias suggested something different this time. In order for them to not deal with the Fanged Wolves after the pack raises again in the second phase of the encounter, Narias suggested for Emilia to freeze them instead. The only issue was, he didn’t know if the ice will be broken by the boss monster’s howl, but it was worth a shot. For that, they agreed to lure all of the Fanged Wolves to one side of the cave, so Emilia could use her Ice Shackles spell to trap the monsters. Once all was agreed, the fight was on.

The plan worked and the Fanged Wolves were successfully lured and frozen by Emilia’s new spell. Once again, Emilia made an impression and not only on the students. Since the party was fighting and couldn’t see him, Professor Zeanlor allowed a smile to show on his lips, watching the students fight. Once the adds were frozen solid, all five students unleashed themselves on the boss monster. It didn’t take long for the boss to get beaten up to the point it had to call for help.

The students braced themselves to see if the Fanged Wolves would be freed from the frozen shackles when the Whitemane Fanged Wolf released his Enraged Howl, but the frozen monsters stayed frozen. That just spurred the party to go all out in an instant without worrying about getting jumped by the adds. The rest of the fight was pretty much one sided after that. The Whitemane Fanged Wolf was strong and wasn’t willing to go down easily, but with no help from its pack, and with five opponents attacking it relentlessly, it couldn’t do much in the end. Once again, the students showed excellent teamwork and determination to win, and the boss monster was finally defeated.

“HOOOWL!” Just like it happened the previous times, the Whitemane Fanged Wolf released one last howl before vanishing into dust.

“Hah, take that!” Flavia cheered, but hasn’t released her Anima-Transformation ability just yet. “What about the adds?”

“Right, the adds,” Emilia turned to where her Ice Shackles were holding the frozen monsters. “Oh, I think… they disappeared as well.”

“I see. So, when the boss monster is defeated, the adds go down with it as well.” Ileena commented.

“Ok, cool. Phew…” Flavia went back to being the normal bunny girl again. “Time to rest… but before that… Treasure!”

Flavia wasn’t about to get beaten to be the first one to see what was inside the treasure chest this time.

“Good fight,” Growly commented before going after Flavia.

“Yes. Your plan worked nicely, Narias. It was much easier to fight the boss monster with no adds around,” Emilia complimented him.

“I agree. We have Narias to thank for it,” Ileena added.

“Thanks, but I didn’t know if it work. Still, it was thanks to Emilia we could pull it off. We have to thank her for it, really,” as always, Narias didn’t want to take all the credit to himself.

“Heeey! Check it out! You won’t believe this, guys!” Flavia was yelling, standing next to the treasure chest and waving her hands frantically.

“Flavia is really excited. Let’s go see what the Whitemane Fanged Wolf dropped,” Narias didn’t want to keep her waiting.

“Hey, hey, check this out. We got two items this time,” Flavia couldn’t stay still.

“Two items? But don’t we always get two items?” Narias was curious.

“Ah, that’s not what I meant. We always get a Magic Crystal and another item, but this time we got two items in addition to the Magic Crystal,” Flavia was grinning so wide it almost looked her face muscles were about to pop.

“Really? How exciting,” Emilia clapped her hands, feeling curious.

“So, what did we get?” Ileena wanted to know.

“Ok, the first item is… the Bone Fang,” Flavia took it out of the chest to show it.

“We got a Bone Fang last time we were here and it sold for a good amount. What is the other item, Flavia?” Ileena was happy about it.

“Ready? Tadaa,” Flavia pulled out the second item from the chest.

“Wow, it’s the fur,” Emilia exclaimed, but then noticed it looked different than the previous fur that they got. “But… it looks smaller than the one we got last time.”

“Ah, yes. This one is the Whitemane Fanged Wolf’s Tail,” Flavia told her.

“A tail? Can I see it?” Ileena wanted to inspect it. “Wow, it feels very soft yet sturdy and it seems like it is much thicker too.”

“Pretty neat, isn’t it?” Flavia couldn’t contain her excitement.

“Yes. Now we can make additional magic leather armor for someone else as well,” Narias was happy someone else will benefit from it this time.

“We can visit Lady Froxen to ask if she could craft something out of it when we get back,” Emilia suggested.

“I agree. With the money we have saved, and the extra that we will get after selling the items we already got, we should have enough to pay for it. Creating the Money Bank was such a great idea. Thank you again, Narias,” Ileena was quick to praise her boyfriend for it.

“Yeah, way to go, partner,” Flavia cheered.

“Aah… it was nothing,” Narias felt happy and embarrassed at the same time.

“Congratulations on such an amazing win. Just like the other teachers reported, your teamwork was outstanding,” Karineus Zeanor, who was silently waiting until the students calm down, finally spoke up.

“Thank you, Professor Zeanlor,” Narias turned to him.

“And you got an additional item as a drop too. Your efforts clearly paid off,” the professor sounded like he knew they would get an extra item.

“What do you mean, Professor Zeanlor?” Ileena picked it up.

“You didn’t know?” He turned to face her fully. “There are certain conditions that, when they are met, provide a chance for the boss monster to drop additional or higher rarity treasure. For example, the Whitemane Fanged Wolf’s Fur that your magic armor is made from have a chance to drop only from the highest difficulty boss monster. The drop chance is not guaranteed, but a small chance is better than no chance. As for you getting one additional item today, you have defeated the Whitemane Fanged Wolf without killing its pack first. That could’ve been the condition needed for that extra item to be found inside the treasure chest. Of course, it could’ve been something else. The Magic Dungeon is very… mysterious and intriguing on that part.”

“Awesome,” Flavia was impressed to learn that.

“Lucky,” Growly was happy about it, and so, were other too.

Right. So, we can get different items based on how we defeat the boss monster. That’s definitely interesting. I’d have to do some extra reading about that. Oh, wait, I still don’t have the permission to get books from the higher sections of the library. Dang it, I need to check what I need to do in order to get the permission. Narias excitement to read new books was cut down as soon as he remembered there were conditions to be met before he’d be able to get those books in the first place.

“So then, what is your plan going forward?” Professor Zeanlor asked, although, he knew what the group’s goal was.

“Our plan from the beginning was to go explore the second floor of the Magic Dungeon, but we need to rest first. Now that the boss monster is defeated, we can rest right here, don’t we, Professor Zeanlor?” Narias knew it was so, but still wanted to confirm with the teacher.

“You are correct, Mister Talrone,” the professor was pleased Narias knew how it worked.

“Ok then, let’s eat and have a good rest. We need to be at full strength before going to the second floor of the dungeon,” Ileena’s words sounded almost like an order.

“Dang it. I’m so excited I might not fall asleep at all,” Flavia tiptoed on her feet.

“You wouldn’t want to be the reason for us to turn back, would you, Flavia?” Ileena was direct and cunning with her question.

“What? Heck no!” Any excuses Flavia still had, they evaporated in an instant and that was not all. “Yo’, partner, how about we use both of our blankets together, so it will be softer to sleep on?”

“H… hey, that’s not fair, Flavia,” Ileena exclaimed in protest. “I will join you two as well. With the three blankets put together, it will be even more comfortable to sleep.”

“But then you won’t have anything to cover yourselves with. The blanket is big enough to cover all four of us, so let’s use mine for that.” Emilia wasn’t about to be left behind.

“Good idea. Let’s pick a good spot to lie down,” Flavia surprised everyone with being so cooperative. “But let’s eat first. I’m starving.”

“Food is good,” Growly was already unpacking his food.

“It must be a little lonely for you to sleep by yourself, Mister Growly?” Karineus Zeanlor asked, getting ready to have some food himself.

“Narias is cool and his girlfriends are nice to him. My girlfriend couldn’t come this time. It’s ok, I can sleep by myself. My fur is soft,” Growly had only good things to say about his friends.

“I see. I admire your deep friendship, Mister Growly,” the professor was impressed with how supportive and understanding Growly was.

“Yes. They are good friends,” Growly grinned happily before starting to munch on his food.
