Chapter 140

The large birds each had colorful plumage in shades of yellow-brown, black, and teal. Quite colorful and eye-catching!

With their vibrant colors, they were easy to spot.

As soon as the birds appeared in the sky, everyone in the room armed themselves and began to prepare for battle. Their colorful appearance was a blessing in disguise.

“For now, I’ll evacuate these people!”

“You have your job to do too, so come back quickly!”

I received somewhat unsettling but somewhat gratifying words and proceeded with the emergency evacuation. I transfered the seven girls to the gymnasium area, which served as the residential area for the Physical Education Club.

“Wait!? W-Where is this!? Why did the scenery suddenly…”

“Alright, alright, just ask the people around here for information! I’ll bring what’s needed later, so take care! See you!”

“Wait? Wait a minute!”

Leaving the bewildered seven girls behind, I returned to my original location.

“Welcome back! Evacuate the people in town and you using ‘transfer’!”

Yes, in this situation, it’s the first time that a place with many people has become a battlefield. It’s impossible to protect others while fighting effectively, so it’s best to evacuate the townspeople as quickly as possible.

…In the first place, I don’t need to protect the people of this world anymore, but I won’t dwell on that now.

If I can do it, I’ll do it. That’s all there is to it.

Expanding the range of the ‘transfer’ effect as much as I can, I then selected only the residents of this town from within that range and transfered them together to a safe zone… in this case, the courtyard of the temple.

The current temple seemed unlikely to mistreat the suddenly arrived people, so I made that judgment.

Using a significant amount of my MP, I transfered back and forth, managing to evacuate people from the area that seemed to be turning into a battlefield… or so I hoped.

…However, as expected, when a large number of people suddenly appeared in the courtyard, the temple residents were thrown into confusion. And those who were evacuated without knowing the situation were also in a state of panic.

“We thought the legendary monstrous birds had appeared, but we came here…”

“Someone must have broken the seal!”

“It’s the curse of the ancient city, Auvrul! Please help us!”

…The priests tried to listen to their explanations, but the people from Kukurts were in such a state that it was impossible to make sense of the situation.

So, I had to provide a simple explanation to the temple residents. Essentially, it was an explanation that sounded like, “We saw three giant birds suddenly flew in, and we ended up here.” It was an explanation that made it sound like it had nothing to do with me.

The priests accepted it, understanding that there was nothing they could do if they were attacked by monsters.

…Now, I could return to where everyone was, but I was intrigued by the mentions of the “curse of the ancient city Auvrul” and “someone breaking the seal” that I overheard earlier.

After all, I wouldn’t be much help in battle. So, I thought I’d stay here for a bit and try to gather more information.

“Excuse me, do you know anything about those birds from earlier?”

I asked a person nearby who seemed a bit scholarly, and they looked at me strangely.

“…Ah, are you someone from elsewhere?”

“Yes. I was here for tourism, but I got caught up in this…”

I quickly fabricated a lie like that while looking troubled, and it seemed to be accepted without much hesitation.

“That’s understandable if you don’t know… By the way, have you heard of Aegis?”

“It’s the town next door, right? Near the capital.”

It should be the town that Homura-kun and the others were heading to.

“Yeah, that’s right… Originally, Aegis wasn’t the capital. Before Aegis became the capital, there was a town called Auvrul, and the royal castle was there.”

I see. So, Auvrul was the capital before they relocated to Aegis.

“Why did they move? Was it because of a plague or something?”

There must have been a reason for the relocation.

Well, I can guess what it might be.

“That’s because of those birds I mentioned earlier. They appeared fifteen years ago and devastated Auvrul.”

Ah, just as I suspected?

“It seems like those monstrous birds have been appearing in this area for a long time. No matter how many times they seal them, the seal always gets broken somewhere, causing a major disaster each time.”

That’s… quite challenging for the region.

“It was tough when Auvrul was destroyed as well. Those monsters were no joke. At the time, there were no heroes around, and they couldn’t possibly fight them. So, sealing the soul of the monstrous bird in the ‘Abyssal Stone,’ which can be mined in Kukurts, was quite a challenge.”

“And this time, the seal has been broken again, leading to those three birds?”

“Probably. The ‘Abyssal Stone’ that sealed the soul of the monstrous bird used to be in the shrine in the mine until about five years ago… But it got buried in a cave-in accident, and they lost track of it.”

I can’t help but think they should have kept it securely stored, but there’s no point in dwelling on that now.

“Is there no way to defeat those birds?”

“Legends say even the heroes of old couldn’t defeat them. They’re said to have incredible endurance, rapid healing, and astounding defense. That means they don’t get injured easily, and even if they do, they heal quickly. Even if they receive injuries that exceed their healing, they won’t die. That’s why they’re unbeatable.”

I see, so that’s how they managed to survive the sealing.

“What is the ‘Abyssal Stone’ exactly?”

“Well, you often see them in mines. They’re more transparent than glass. When you seal something in them, they turn somewhat gray. They’re quite fragile, but if you apply a strong impact, they activate immediately and seal everything around them. They can be troublesome.”

I see, a highly transparent stone that turns somewhat gray when used to seal something.

And if you crush it, the seal is released.

I see. It seems we’re the culprits… I’m so sorry!

Most likely, during the process of searching for the stone that had sealed the emotions of the Home Economics Club members, they must have broken all the stones they found, including the one that had sealed the soul of that giant bird.

It was unavoidable, but we ended up doing something incredibly significant.

For now, if they can’t defeat those birds, they have no choice but to seal them. So I need to inform everyone about this.

Returning in haste to the battlefield that Kukurts had become, I found everyone still engaged in battle.

“Oh, welcome back.”

“What’s the situation here?”

“We’re detaining them for now because there’s no other way to deal with them.”

The three giant birds were partially buried in earth and rocks, or encased in ice, struggling.

It was a surreal sight.

“While their physical defense, healing, and endurance are incredible, it seems they don’t have much resistance to magic.”

Even so, constantly repairing the rocks and ice being destroyed must be exhausting.

Both Hagasaki-kun and President looked fatigued. They probably couldn’t keep this up for much longer.

“Oh, about that. I asked the people of Kukurts, and it turns out that these birds had their souls sealed in the same kind of stones that the Home Economics Club members had their emotions and will sealed in.”

As soon as I said that, it seemed to click with President.

“So, in other words, we’re the ones who unintentionally released the seal?”

“Most likely.”

Well, to be honest, if they hadn’t kept the ‘Abyssal Stones’ that sealed the souls of those birds in the shrine inside the mine, this wouldn’t have happened. And if the Home Economics Club members hadn’t foolishly applied a strong impact to a stone that was “common in mines” and “troublesome,” this wouldn’t have happened either.

Our culpability is a bit ambiguous.

“That’s a problem. …We need to take responsibility and defeat them.”

So, I think President doesn’t need to feel undue responsibility, and we can just reseal them normally.

“Ketorami!”

Since the situation was still unclear, I called for Ketorami.

[What is it?]

Ketorami arrived immediately when called, which was quite cool.

“Do you know those giant birds?”

[I don’t know.”]

“Is it okay to defeat them? Will it cause any problems for this town, or the Demon Lord?”

[Isn’t it okay to just defeat them?]

First checkpoint cleared.

If Ketorami had said it was really bad, then maybe we shouldn’t defeat them, but he seemed genuinely indifferent, so it’s probably fine.

“Do you know how to defeat them?”

[How should I know?]

I realized that Ketorami is from the 2nd Floor, so he might not have any knowledge about these unique… well, these unique-sized monsters. Yeah, this bird is probably a unique monster. It makes sense that he wouldn’t know even if he hadn’t met this specific bird.

[I’ll tell you this, I’d rather not get involved with those kinds of situations.]

“Oh, I understand. Sorry for calling you. I wasn’t sure if it was okay to defeat them since they’re unique.”

Ketorami doesn’t want to fight with other unique monsters. My apologies.

[……Well, that’s it. If you’re struggling with just one unique that’s not even high in firepower, then your masters are still small fry.]

With that seemingly spiteful hint, Ketorami mentioned that he’s going to have a meal and left again.

“Ketorami! Thanks!”

I wonder if my thanks reached him… Yeah, I’m sure he heard it.

Now, it’s not “three unique creatures” or “one unique creature,” but “one unique.” (T/N: Sorry, it’s hard to convey this clearly. “One unique creature” means one of the three birds is a unique monster. “One unique” means all three of them are considered one monster.)

This absolutely has to be a hint from that tsundere wolf.

“I see. ‘One unique.'”

I immediately conveyed Ketorami’s hint to everyone, and we held a meeting while the birds were trapped in rocks and ice, making strange noises.

It was extremely surreal.

“Wait, so does that mean there’s only one unique creature among them?”

“If it were ‘One unique creature,’ he would have said it like that. Most likely, those three birds together form one unique monster.”

What the heck!?

“If they’re considered one unique monster when combined, then they probably have some kind of shared ability.”

Well, most likely.

At the very least, if they’re considered one unique monster when combined, it wouldn’t make much sense for their shared ability to be “incredible defense, stamina, and regeneration.”

“Hmm, how about trying to attack all three of them at once for now?”

…So, based on Toriumi’s proposal, Suzumoto, Kadomi-kun, and Toriumi decided to simultaneously attack the birds.

“Ready, set, go!”

It turned out not much changed. Even with the combined attack power of the three, the birds didn’t sustain significant damage and quickly healed.

“Hmm? I might have figured it out. You know, this is the kind of puzzle you often encounter in games, right?”

Seemingly having an idea, Toriumi muttered something to the three and they got ready again.

“Okay, one more time. Ready, set, go!”

This time, the three of them simultaneously attacked the same spot on each of the three birds—the base of their right wings.

“This feels like some sesame dressing.”

“…Refreshing.”

“I see. Attacking the same spot on all three birds simultaneously seems to be the solution.”

I see, it has that video game puzzle-solving vibe, doesn’t it?

“So, shall we quickly finish them off?”

While everyone was feeling refreshed, the wounds on the birds were slowly healing.

In other words, we need to take them down quickly, all at once.

…You know, thinking about these things might not be a good idea.

…But it’s fine, right?

“Hey, how much longer can President and Hagasaki-kun hold out?”

“About 5 minutes for me.”

“I think I can last… about 10 more minutes.”

“Correction. I can also last for 10 minutes… So what’s the plan?”

Hmm. I don’t want to push Hagasaki-kun too hard, so 5 minutes, huh? Well, that should be enough.

“Hey, everyone, could you help me shear the chest feathers of these birds for down comforters?”

Carefully avoiding shearing all three birds simultaneously, with everyone’s cooperation, we were able to harvest plenty of down from the birds’ chests.

Oh, these unique monsters certainly live up to their name. The feathers are so soft. Fluffy! While cotton comforters are nice, there’s nothing like a down comforter.

“Alright, I think it’s about time.”

We had collected enough down, so it was time to take care of these three birds.

With a somewhat anticlimactic squawk or something along those lines, the three birds were defeated.

When birds die, their colors changed. The yellow-brown bird turned gold, the black bird turned silver, and the blue-green bird turned copper!

Interestingly, when we checked the collected feathers, they had also changed color. Hmm, quite the mysterious feature.

Now, let’s move on to disassembling these bird corpses… Huh?

“…The corpses?”

“What’s going on?”

The bird corpses gradually sparkled and disappeared, leaving behind large gold nuggets, silver nuggets, copper nuggets, and some mysterious metal lump.

In a hurry, I checked the feathers… They’re safe! They’re still feathers! I repeat, they’re still feathers!

“I don’t really understand what just happened, but did we at least save our comforters?”

“We saved them!”

Undeterred by the mysterious nature of the creatures in this world, we secured our down comforters! Hooray!
