Chapter 5: The Car Is Gone

_

“Regarding reliability and loyalty, who can compare to the Unsullied soldiers?” Daenerys said.

The interdimensional trade device could trade living beings. Still, compared to regular trading, trading living beings was a bit more complicated. The traded object must not resist or have the ability to resist.

However, this was not a problem with the Unsullied.

The “Unsullied” were the slaves of Slaver’s Bay. After castrating the slaves at a young age, they trained them to be a non-human army with no freedom, status, or emotion, only endless obedience.

Before encountering Daenerys, these soldiers had almost erased all human characteristics, including physical sensations, emotions, and pain, leaving only absolute obedience to their masters who purchased them and fearlessness towards death and torture.

Only after Daenerys arrived at Slaver’s Bay and tricked the slave masters into giving her the command of the Unsullied did they gain their freedom and dignity.

Therefore, this fearless army was completely loyal to Daenerys.

So as long as Daenerys spoke and asked them to be traded to Josh as commodities, they would not resist.

It had to be said that Josh was very tempted by Daenerys’ proposal. Although the Unsullied soldiers may not have the best minds due to being slaves, they were perfect as guards.

With several dozen Unsullied soldiers, if they were taught how to use guns, Josh would not have to fear facing the CPD (Chicago Police Department) or any other gang.

He wouldn’t have to be so cautious about exchanging gold as he was now.

As for whether having a few extra people around him would cause unnecessary trouble, there was no need to worry too much.

After all, the whole world was at war now. Many refugees with visas had gathered in major port cities in the United States, such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. They could only live in specific refugee camps. Although Chicago was an inland area, its port could still lead to Europe along the Lawrence River.

This was also why Chicago had so many European immigrants, such as Italians.

So as long as Josh spent a little more money, it would be easy to give the Unsullied soldiers refugee status and then legally obtain their American identity.

After careful consideration, however, Josh ultimately refused Daenerys’ proposal.

“Sorry, Daenerys, your proposal is good, but I also hope you understand the importance of the trading device to us. I still believe that it is not suitable for anyone besides ourselves to know of its existence because it is a risk for us, even if that risk is minimal.” Josh shook his head and said.

“You’re right. I was a little hasty,” Daenerys said after hearing Josh’s words. She thought about it and said no more.

Cutting off communication with Daenerys, Josh breathed a sigh of relief, waved his hand, and a heavy gold bar appeared in his hand.

“Mwah!” Looking at the gold bar in his hand, Josh couldn’t help but kiss it. Gold, it was such a wonderful thing.

After indulging in the gold for a while, Josh got up, packed his things, looked at the sky outside, which was not too late, and prepared to go out for dinner.

Although there was still a bit of bread at home, he had been eating it for almost a week and definitely didn’t want to eat it again in the short term.

Although he had spent most of the US dollars he exchanged in the morning, he still had several tens of dollars left, so he didn’t need to be too frugal.

Josh tidied his clothes, checked the M1911 he bought during the day, loaded it, and put it into the system’s warehouse before confidently stepping out of the door.

“Mr. Kane!” Just as he was about to leave, he was stopped by someone wearing a uniform.

Josh recognized the clothes on the person as being from the property management company.

“What can I do for you?” Josh was a little puzzled.

“Mr. Kane, this is your property management bill for the past three months. We didn’t bother you before because of the death of your parents, but it’s been so long now. What do you think?” It turned out that the other party had come to collect a debt, but their attitude was still good.

What surprised Josh, however, was that he didn’t expect property fees in America at this time.

Of course, this could only be attributed to Josh’s lack of knowledge.

In fact, the concept of property management fees had already appeared in England in the 1860s and soon spread to the United States.

Although it was still the 1940s, the system in the United States was already very well established in this regard.

Although Josh was somewhat surprised by this, the property fee was not expensive. After all, this was just an ordinary civilian apartment. The property fee was forty-two cents a month and just over a dollar for three months.

He paid the bill immediately.

Seeing Josh paying, the other party also showed a relaxed smile.

Property management companies were not afraid that homeowners would not pay property fees because property companies in Europe and America have always been very powerful. When the homeowner accumulates a certain amount of debt, they can submit it to the court and directly auction off the homeowner’s property through a judicial procedure.

However, just because the property management company was not afraid didn’t mean that the employees who collected the property fee were not afraid. Not receiving money or being complained against by homeowners would also affect their bonus income. For them, it was naturally better to avoid trouble.

“By the way, does your property management company have a business of selling properties on behalf of the owner?” After paying the bill, Josh handed the other party a ten-cent tip and asked.

“Uh, Mr. Kane, are you planning to move out?” Upon hearing Josh’s words, the other party asked somewhat unexpectedly.

“Yes, that’s right. This is my sad place, you know, so I’m planning to leave here.” Josh pretended to be sad.

But he didn’t plan to continue living here.

After all, this apartment was too small, the security was average, and someone had died here—even though it was the parents of this body, Josh still felt uncomfortable.

Before, he had no money and no choice.

But now, with all the gold in the system warehouse, he could buy a luxurious mansion and a six-bedroom house in a high-end community.

Of course, this didn’t mean Josh had to buy such a big house. After all, he was lonely and didn’t need such a big space.

And he had to leave most of the money as operating capital.

So, he planned to rent a more upscale apartment in the short term.

“I see. The company does have a business of selling properties on behalf of the owner. And now, small properties like this are very easy to sell. If Mr. Kane needs it, I can help you to contact us.” The other party nodded and said.

“Thank you. Please let me know if you have any news.” Josh nodded and didn’t mention how to inform him because it wasn’t necessary. Although the apartment was very ordinary, there was also a doorman at the entrance. When he was at home, the doorman could see him coming in and out, so he didn’t have to worry about not being found.

After reaching an agreement with the other party, Josh left the apartment.

Then, his originally good mood instantly turned sour.

Because the spot where he had just parked his newly bought second-hand Ford car was now empty.
