Chapter 8

Lunatia shouldn't be too hard to find.  The bird's magnetoreception continues to function in this new world, and there have been a few days to see the sun rising in the east.  And if this body is equivalent to his old one, it'll take an hour or so of flying to get there.

The sky today was overcast and cloudy, and there were no other high-flying beasts.  Small fliers did exist, however, little yellow things hopping between treetops, orange things that hovered for a minute, moving like hummingbirds, flitting around from one flower to another.  And puffballs, large white things that floated gently in the breeze, barely able to control their own movements.  For today, at least, the flight itself was unremarkable, travel being safe.

Down below things were a different story.

"Okay, keep it tight.  You all know the drill.  Bodyguards, stay next to your charges.  Ranged, stay in your positions and team up.  Escorts, pair up, watch each other's backs and cover the middle of the carts.  Vanguards keep your positions unless I say otherwise."

The short, bearded man pauses before continuing, eyes flicking across the rest of the caravan.  There are over thirty carts and about twenty armed people among them, more of the strange humans with the armour, the weapons, and the odd clothing.  There's a couple with spears, some with swords, some with bows, some with crossbows, some with more exotic weapons.. armour, of all types and weight, and several of them, the ones called 'escorts' are mounted.  Too many to describe in detail, although Beardo has a particularly fancy embroidered cloak with shiny threads in it.  At the back there's another fancy one, a human with cat ears and a heavy sword.

"And remember, don't do anything heroic.  This is a low zone!  A low zone!  There are no bounties, so you're here to protect the caravan and stay alive.  No running off for kills!"

Not that anyone does.  Looking around, the bird can see three groups of attackers.. packs of long, low half-hyena half frog-like creatures that hop menacingly and threaten with nasty looking spines.  They're mostly staying away, but one pack charges the left side.. followed by several guards running to block them.  This causes the pack on the right to jump in, sensing weakness.

A few dead frog-creatures later, the rest flee, but several humans are downed and injured.  Perhaps dead.. but.. no, they'd smell different.

The bird calmly watches this before flying away.  They're protecting the frog corpses and packing them up, so no free lunch.

Amphibians are a bit slimy anyway.  I feel like something dry and more solid now.

Wait.. when did I start getting so picky?

Distracted by self-doubt, the bird flies into Lunatia on autopilot, coming to a landing inside an exquisite open upstairs window.  Surprised inside is an immature human female.  She's standing next to a tall wardrobe, holding a stuffed animal, and staring at the black creature with her simply enormous eyes.  A shriek brings the creature back to its senses.  Panic.  He takes off, slams headfirst into a large heavy-framed painting, knocks over a crystal lantern fixture, and finishes up by knocking a plant straight out the window.  The planter slowly topples down, down, landing onto the road far below.  Now fleeing, the bird barely escapes a fireball sent through the window behind it, before eventually coming to a landing on an ordinary roof in the town, far below the castle-like mansion above, shaking with adrenaline and recovering from the near miss.

Phew.  At least that's over.
