Chapter 10
Monday mornings are a depressing time for many people. However, those of us who don’t know how to resist the flow of time can only rub our heavy eyelids, wake up with our sleep-deprived brains, and head to our respective battlefields. I arrived at school at the usual time, neither too early nor too late.
I took my usual seat, and I plopped down on my desk and shut my eyes. It’s not that I’m going to sleep completely, but I do this because I want to rest even for a little while.
I feel that when I shut off my sight, my other senses become stronger. In this case, it was my hearing. As I’m prone, I can hear the sounds around me more clearly than usual. At first, I hear a whisper, then I start to hear words, and if I concentrate I can sometimes tell who’s talking and what they’re saying. I’m not consciously listening, I’m just letting it wash over me. You may think it’s not restful, but it’s surprisingly calming.
“ETSUJI!”
The sound my ears picked up was the sound of a door rattling open and a loud voice calling my name.
Oh, there’s another boisterous guy…
When he found me, he came to me, dodging the girls who were screaming “Cool!”
“Hey! I’m here!”
“I didn’t call for you…”
As I lifted my head, I checked his face. I knew exactly who it was by the sound of his voice and the reaction of the people around me.
“Don’t say that!”
“What’s wrong with you in the morning, Kouki?”
The handsome man who has been causing a commotion in the classroom since morning is Arizono Kouki. As mentioned in the previous conversation, Kouki is one of the six people who have always been close to me.
Kouki is a popular guy. He humbly says he’s not, but there’s always a crowd around him. His looks and his athletic skills, which are no less than those of Rikiya, make him the center of attention for girls. He is one of the few freshmen on his soccer team. He has already been confessed to by several people since entering high school…
His friendly personality, which allows him to interact with everyone, made him popular among the boys, and he seems to be the central figure in his class. I’ve only heard rumors about him since I’m in a different class, but I’m pretty sure it’s Kouki.
“I heard from Rikiya that the four of you hung out together the other day, though I wasn’t invited…”
“No, that’s…”
“I didn’t play with them, but if you want to talk about why you were not invited, please talk to Erika.”
When I looked at Erika, our eyes met for a moment, and she quickly looked away.
“It’s not like we were playing, we were just hanging around the station.”
“But still, I wanted to go! Why didn’t you call me?”
“Kouki, you’re busy with club activities, he was trying to be considerate.”
“Rikiya and Erika have club activities, too.”
Oh, this is so annoying…
“Forget about the details. Don’t worry about what’s done! Yes, we’re done.”
Forced termination. Kouki continued to complain, but when I left him alone, he gradually subsided. As soon as I thought that, the next topic came up.
“Oh well. So I heard then that you guys are going to hang out together again sometime, right?”
That’s what we promised to do now that I remember.
“You’ll be able to talk to me then, won’t you?”
He leaned forward and looked at me with a sparkling expression, like a pure boy.
“The time will come. I don’t know when though.”
Kouki did a guts pose, saying “Yes!” He is still like a child after all.
“I mean, don’t talk about it with me, talk about it with Sayuri or Erika.”
The moment he heard my words, Kouki’s expression instantly turned serious.
“No, I can’t do that. I don’t know why, but Sayuri and Erika sometimes just brush me off. If I tell them about this, they might say, “Yes,you can come” and then later say that the talk is already over.”
“Did something happen between you two?”
“No I don’t think they hate me, it’s just that when Etsuji is involved, he’s kind of hard on me-“
At that moment, I felt something akin to killing intent. It was as if it was saying, “Don’t talk any more.” I felt it coming from Erika’s direction, but she was looking forward, so maybe I had the wrong person…
Koki didn’t say anything more either.
The bell rang at the right time.
“Time’s up.”
If you’re done, go away…
“Hora, shiishi~!” [TL Note: JP Equivalent of Shoo shoo]
“Why is it so cold? I don’t understand. I’m going home.”
For me, Kouki is a rare person who can communicate like this, so it’s no problem to treat him roughly. If you don’t mind the reaction of the people around you, that is a problem.
As I saw Kouki going away, I remembered something.
“Wait a minute, Kouki.”
Kouki quickly turns around and comes back.
“Hmm? What’s up?”
“There’s something I need to ask you.”
“Etsuji wants a favor from me? What is it? I will do whatever you say!”
“Actually…”
I didn’t want anyone to hear me, so I told him in his ear.
“I want you to…”
“I see, okay, I’ll take care of it!”
He stuck his thumb out in front of him and gave a simple “Gu”. Our time was just about up, so Kouki hurried back to his classroom.
Even in the short time it took him to leave the classroom, I could hear the yellow cheers of the girls, “Kya~!” and “Kouki-kun!”.
Seeing Kouki smiling and reacting to each one of them even though there was no time to spare, I thought to myself that this was the top of the school castle.
After that, a large number of girls came to listen to Kouki, and I was tired, so I made a firm vow to make him buy me something for sure.
