Chapter 168 Entry

My Soulmate is A Libero

The VNL finals would start on July 5th.

Zhe Yue Young Master Lu Xuandong, finally finished his work and bought a ticket to fly to Chicago. He arrived at his destination on July 4th in the afternoon, U.S. time.

To his surprise, as he disembarked from the plane, he saw the nanny of the Hamster Club walking ahead, not in a hurry and with a somewhat weird walking posture. All his luggage was being pushed by his younger brother, Lu Yunchen.

Neither of them noticed the familiar figure of Lu Xuandong nearby.

What was going on? Lu Xuandong was puzzled, but his experiences in the entertainment industry had made him unusually sensitive to certain things. He pondered for a while but decided that sometimes it was better not to think too much.

As the chief medical officer for volleyball, the top medical officer in Russian sports, Yashenka was highly renowned in the industry. When he entered the hotel, the Russian team welcomed him collectively, and even passing athletes could call him by name.

For ordinary people, Yashenka was just an average doctor from the Saint Petersburg team. But for athletes, he was the lifeline of hope when they were pushed to the brink by injuries.

Although his 188cm height was not as “delicate and lovely” as a certain 180cm  libero in front of a group of volleyball players, it still fell within a modest range. However, Lu Yunchen was surprised to find that everyone, including the 6’7″ giants, lowered their heads respectfully upon seeing Yashenka. Even those over 6’8″ bent over.

Yes, that was the level of respect and politeness.

Yashenka’s care for his patients eventually turned into reputation, enabling him to stay in hotels for free. The Russian national team covered his accommodation and transportation costs. Additionally, he earned extra income from conducting medical examinations and treatments. Not to mention the annual salary of 500,000 USD he received from the Hamster Club.

Lu Yunchen calculated his monthly salary from his job at the food factory and couldn’t help but put his arms around the doctor’s waist from behind, proudly complimenting Yashenka, “You’re really young and promising.”

The 31-year-old Yashenka gazed silently at the 19-year-old Lu Yunchen: …

Didn’t this kid use sign language to call him “uncle” during their previous argument? And now he’s suddenly younger?

He pushed Lu Yunchen away. “I’ve said it before, don’t act so intimate with me.”

Lu Yunchen stuttered, “But, but I need to take responsibility for you.”

Yashenka decisively replied, “No need.”

It was just a hand… and he had to take responsibility for that? This kid was taking things too seriously.

Lu Yunchen looked guilty. “But I caused you to twist your knee.”

To meet Yashenka, Lu Yunchen had taken an earlier flight to Saint Petersburg after informing them through Qin Chunxiao. When Yashenka heard the doorbell early in the morning and opened the door, he thought it was the milk delivery. Upon seeing Lu Yunchen’s face, he instinctively lifted his foot. Likewise, Lu Yunchen, who had been practicing martial arts under his brother’s supervision, instinctively grasped Yashenka’s ankle.

Lu Yunchen lightly shouted, “I go?!”

Yashenka cried out, “Ow!”

Yashenka’s knee was twisted, and it was fortunate that there were no bone injuries.

Thinking of that embarrassing scene, Yashenka’s lips twitched. He organized his medical kit. “I’m going to the Chinese team’s side. If you’re okay, you can leave.”

Lu Yunchen’s attention shifted. “What’s wrong with our Chinese team? Who got injured?”

Yashenka replied, “Someone had a fever during training but didn’t notice it. They thought the fever was due to the intense training. Eventually, they fainted in the arena and accidentally injured their wrist. Misha heard I was coming and asked me to take a look.”

At that moment, someone knocked on the door. Yashenka went to open it and saw Li Ling’s handsome yet utterly naive face.

“Yashenka, you’re here. That’s great. We’ve all been waiting for you. Maiti is almost crying.”

Li Ling grabbed Yashenka and was about to leave. Yashenka stumbled and almost fell to the ground. “Slow down, slow down. My knee is injured too.”

Li Ling froze. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Let me carry you.”

Er Leng directly flung the person onto his back, sprinting away with great momentum. Yashenka felt like he was riding a husky, his hand trembling as he shouted, “Help me watch the door!”

Lu Yunchen obediently closed the door and grabbed a chair, sitting by the entrance. He pinched his own arm, wondering if he should start working out with his brother to develop the kind of muscles that could easily lift someone onto his back.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Wang Yan skillfully handed Aizimaiti a can. Aizimaiti wore a fever-reducing patch on his forehead, looking dejected. He turned his head and began crying again, “Coach, what do I do if I can’t catch up with the competition?”

Newton gestured with his fingers, “Our group stage lasts for three days. After that, there are the semifinals and finals. As long as we don’t get eliminated, you should be able to recover within three days and make it to the competition.”

Aizimaiti thought about the opponents the Chinese team was about to face and suddenly felt overwhelmed with sadness. He let out a whimper and started crying again.

Newton was displeased, “Maiti, you need to have confidence in your teammates. What if we make it to the semifinals? We reached the semifinals last year, you know.”

Aizimaiti stuttered, “But, but what if we get placed in a tough group this year?”

When it came to this kind of metaphysical question, Qin Chunxiao had no answer. Ding Rong kicked Xiong Wu, “Fortune teller, do a divination.”

Xiong Wu retorted, “I told you, I’m not a fortune teller, remember?”

Despite his words, Xiong Wu still cast a divination. The result: very bad luck.

Seeing the divination, Xiong Wu messed up the tortoise shell divination and whistled, completely destroying the atmosphere in the room. Everyone knew that Xiong Wu had an eerie talent in metaphysics. Seeing his reaction, it was almost certain that the Chinese team would have a tough journey in this year’s VNL finals.

Aizimaiti became even more sorrowful. Unfortunately, at this moment, he also saw Qin Chunxiao, wearing a mask and standing about three meters away from him. He hesitated, waving at everyone, “Stay away from me, don’t spread the infection. Xiaozai, distribute the masks.”

“Oh.” Qin Chunxiao got up and shared his stash of masks with everyone. He wasn’t too anxious, as he hadn’t heard any rumors of infections during this VNL season. Plus, if there were any infections, it wouldn’t happen in July. He felt quite steady about it.

At that moment, You Ziyu suddenly stood up, “I’ll go buy some more.”

Qin Chunxiao asked, “Huh? Aren’t the dozens I have on hand enough?”

You Ziyu replied, “Well, I just checked the local news in the United States. There’s a flu outbreak in Missouri. Chicago is the most famous city in Illinois, and Illinois shares a border with Missouri. Even though Aizimaiti is infected with a common cold virus, not the flu, it’s better to be safe.”

Just then, Li Ling burst into the room, carrying Yashenka on his back with great momentum, “I brought the nanny!”

He shouted in Chinese. Yashenka, who had learned a few phrases in Chinese during his trip to China for medical treatment, suddenly became furious, “Who are you calling a nanny? I’m obviously your dad!”

Aizimaiti had a sprained wrist, and Yashenka was experienced in treating such injuries. He examined the young men and praised Wang Yan for his excellent emergency treatment of the injury. Then, with a confident tone, he reassured Aizimaiti that as long as he cooperated with the treatment, he would recover to a level where he could compete.

“It’s impossible to completely recover within three days, but you’re lucky. It’s your left hand that’s injured, and you’re not left-handed like Misha. The injury won’t affect you much.”

Yashenka’s carefree expression successfully alleviated Aizimaiti’s anxious heart. After treating Aizimaiti’s injury, Li Ling carefully carried Yashenka back.

Just then, Newton received the group assignments for their matches. The eight teams that advanced to the finals were divided into Groups A and B for round-robin matches within each group. The top two teams from each group would proceed to the semifinals. This year, China was placed in Group A, along with teams from Brazil, the United States, and Poland.

Sebastian had returned to the Polish team, so there was no issue of the opponent lacking key players.

This was truly the “group of death”! While the adjacent groups of Russia, Italy, Iran, and France were also quite challenging, at least if the Chinese team were placed in those groups, they could likely defeat Iran and put up a fight against France, increasing their chances of advancing.

After reading the group assignments, the Chinese team fell into silence. Qin Chunxiao stood up and cleared his throat, “We made it to the semifinals last year. We can’t perform worse than last year, right? Our families and fans are all hoping for us to create miracles.”

The others responded, “You did say it’s a miracle.”

In fact, there were records of weaker teams defeating stronger ones in the VNL stage matches, as many strong teams tend to relax and use their second string in those matches. However, this was the finals, and they had to use their main lineup. So, who dared to challenge Qin Chunxiao’s words?

Qin Chunxiao slapped the table, “Our ultimate goal is the Olympic championship! Those teams are bound to win sooner or later. Whether it’s sooner or later doesn’t matter! Let’s go all out against them this year!”

Some in the team did want to argue or make a sarcastic comment about this statement, but they all saw the table under Qin Chunxiao’s hand.

It was a wooden table, made from an unknown type of wood. When Little Qin slammed his palm on it, several large cracks appeared on the tabletop. A second later, the tabletop shattered into four pieces.

How could anyone dare to refute Qin Chunxiao’s words after that! Wang Yan jumped up, holding Qin Chunxiao’s hand and examining it left and right, with an astonished expression, “Xiaozai, your hand isn’t hurt at all. How did you train it like this?”

Qin Chunxiao was also bewildered, “T-the quality of the table is just terrible, it’s not my fault!”

Meanwhile, Newton was already adeptly pulling out his wallet, heading to the hotel front desk to compensate for the damage. As a man who managed a whole squad of animals, he was quite accustomed to his wild critters accidentally breaking things.

On July 5th, the VNL finals officially began! On this day, not only did players’ relatives and friends with the means and time gather, but fans from all over the world also flocked to the event.

Since the VNL was a commercial competition, the organizers were pleased to see the athletes having fun and even encouraged it, but the matches still needed to be played seriously. Athletes had to keep their antics off the court. Take the entrance, for example.

The Polish team’s entrance this year was incredibly sweet. They wore fruit hats bought locally in Chicago, happily making heart signs to the crowd. Among them, Sebastian only made the heart sign towards the camera, and everyone knew he was sending it to his fiancée, Lily. It remained to be seen if the busy nurse could catch a glimpse.

The Brazilian team’s entrance embraced a nature theme. These brothers, who had also bought animal headgear in Australia, entered happily with koala and kangaroo headgear, looking like they were having a blast.

But everyone was most excited for China’s entrance.

At some point, muscular men had become the symbol of this top Asian team. When the Chinese team’s bus stopped, a group of sunglasses-wearing muscular men disembarked, and many fans cheered.

Qin Chunxiao, sporting sunglasses, walked at the front of the lineup with his head held high. Although he was the shortest, no one had any objections about his position in the lineup. Even the fans felt he was the most qualified for that spot.

After all, Little Qin was the strongest… second strongest man on the Chinese team!

In previous years, it had always been Lu Xuandong walking down the red carpet, the one receiving cheers. But in this moment, in a foreign land, he stood among the bustling crowd, watching Qin Chunxiao on the red carpet.

Qin Chunxiao seemed to sense something and looked in his direction. He lifted his sunglasses, revealing a smile, and mouthed a greeting.

“Hey.”

In that instant, Lu Xuandong realized that Qin Chunxiao wasn’t just greeting the fans in this direction, but was truly looking past countless fans and locking eyes with him.

He instinctively smiled and waved, “Hey.”
