Batabatabatabatabata

The sound of the air being pounded echoed throughout the area. Had it been during the hustle and bustle of the middle of the day, they could have missed it. However, since it was in the middle of the night, it was a faint sound which they could easily discern. Dawn was approaching but it was still fairly dark. Fur Hart raised an eyebrow, having never heard the sound before. The area was still enveloped in darkness and they could not discern any enemies.

The sound slowly got louder, escalating their anxiety to its limits.

Using a pair of binoculars, Fur Hart tried to check the direction from where he thought the sound was coming from. There, with the moon behind its back, he saw the faint silhouette of something. Having spotted it by chance, its shape was unlike any Imperial aircraft he had seen before.

“What the hell is that???”

The silhouette looked like an insect with something that looked like a ceiling fan rotating at ultra-high speeds placed on top. It moved slower than any aircraft in the Imperial arsenal and yet…

“So it’s a low-flying aircraft! Get ready to intercept the bastard! Once it enters range, weapons free!”

Its speed was slow but Fur Hart nevertheless felt tense looking at it. Since it flew so low, there was a chance that it could spot them. There was also the danger that if they attacked it, they’d give their positions away. Still, there was also danger in them not doing anything about it.

“What the?!”

Streaks of light appeared in the sky.

“Did it fire?!”

The streaks of light, travelling at high speeds, flew straight and true towards the heavy machine gun emplacement south of Fur Hart. Flashes of light illuminated the darkness as explosions continuously rang out.

“Ack!!!”

Wracked by flames and explosions, buildings began to collapse above their hidden weapons emplacements.

“No… Don’t tell me that thing could see us!!!”

They were being attacked from outside their effective range. Relentlessly hurling attack after attack, their positions were being wiped out by the enemy with deadly accuracy and speed. It was as if everything else was invisible and they’re the only ones being seen. Each attack was a massive blow to their forces as casualties skyrocket.

“That’s impossible! How can they attack so accurately from that range!”

Fur Hart could hardly keep up with understanding what allowed the enemy to achieve such a feat. Their proud Imperial force was being helplessly wiped out. Ignorant of Fur Hart’s thoughts and feelings, the attacks relentlessly continued.

“We’ve lost contact with the 1st diversion squad! The 2nd is gone too! 3rd! 8th! 12th!”

Their losses outpaced the reports.

“No! No! Fuck!!!”

Pinching his cheeks to try and wake up from a bad dream, Fur Hart could only wince in pain.

“A-All heavy machine guns have been destroyed! They got all of them!!!”

Someone screamed.

“Not only is it at night, we put up all the camouflage so that we could stay hidden!!! For fuck’s sake, there’s only 1 aircraft out there!!! How the fuck are we losing to a single fucking aircraft?! Fuck!!!”

“But sir!”

“Aghh!!!”

A rocket found its way directly where Fur Hart was standing.

A single AH-64D, after having pinpointed the location of the Gra Valkan emplacements, efficiently carried out their destruction. After having caused countless pain to the people of the Hinomawari Kingdom, Fur Hart’s life ended anticlimactically in a rocket explosion.

・・・

Underground command room, Subjugation Authority

“Having received substantial aerial attacks, the Sheen Assassination Unit has lost the east gate. The extent of casualties is unknown but according to signal flares launched, it seems that they’re trying to re-establish emplacements. Furthermore, the rebuilt anti-aircraft emplacements around their positions have all been destroyed by the enemy special air unit.”

“Enemy special air unit?”

“The unit, unlike our aircraft, can hover in place.”

They were at a loss for words at what the enemy was capable of fielding.

“What the hell…”

As they continue to lose their means of counterattack, a sense of futility begins to set in. They didn’t even have any radio contact with their other forces in Leifor. Their numbers were also too few. If only Olle Butz could come back with reinforcements from the other bases…

Having resorted to hoping for their useless commander to return, their spirits further diminished. The possibility of them becoming POWs of those barbarians was beginning to manifest. A horrible chill ran down their spines as they imagined the barbarians treating them like they treated the barbarians.

Despite feeling the hopelessness, Jagner continued to lead his men.

・・・

Countless parachutes open up in the sky as soldiers of the JGSDF’s 1st Airborne Brigade drop in. Jumping out of a C-1, the soldiers were able to safely parachute their way to the ground. As soon as they freed themselves from their parachutes, the elite 1st Airborne Brigade proceeded south of the battle, towards the heart of the Hinomawari Kingdom’s capital.

・・・

Underground command room, Subjugation Authority

One by one, they were losing contact with their surface teams. For each time they lost contact with one, the sound of an explosion preceded it. For each explosion, the underground command room shook.

“Fuck… We no longer have any people topside…”

The speaking tubes connected to the upper floor continuously gave them reports but after some explosions the reports also stopped coming. The only thing they heard through the speaking tube was the eerie secondary echoes of explosions. It felt as if a significant amount of time had passed when it was only mere moments.

“It’ll be dawn soon…”

With the stress from the fear of death and the lack of sleep piling up, they slowly felt their stamina ebb away.

“…now…”

The radio kicked to life for a moment.

“Huh? Where’s that coming from?”

“bzzzzzt… -pan Self Defense Force! All remaining Gra Valkan forces are to raise a white flag and surrender, now! Else, we will attack!-”

It could only mean that the enemy knows the frequency that the Imperial Army uses. It was hard to believe but the reality was that the Japanese were advising them to surrender. In the midst of all the death, they now had a chance of escaping the bloodshed alive. A saving grace from the voice of their supposed enemy. Everyone in the room looked towards Jagner for his response.

Considering all that we’ve done, it’s possible that I will be killed after they’re done torturing me. However, this is still not a guarantee that I will be killed. At the very least, I can petition for my subordinates to be spared… Fuck it, no more ego! Tsk! Who knew my life would end like this…

By simply devoting his life for the Army, he intended to live a no-nonsense life. He intended to push himself to the limits for the Empire and for its people. Efficiently subjugating the colonies and sending the riches back to the empire was justifiable. If only he knew that his end would come this early… The faces of his wife and now 10-year old son swirled in his mind.

“It’s possible that this is a ploy from the enemy. I will head up and see the situation with my own eyes before deciding if we’ll surrender or not. One of you will come with me with the portable radio. If we are to actually surrender, throw away your weapons and don’t resist so that you could actually live.”

Together with a subordinate carrying a portable radio bigger than a randoseru (the backpack worn by gradeschoolers) Jagner climbed up the stairs to the surface. Emerging out of the door, they climbed up one of the buildings that still stood and surveyed their surroundings.

“… It’s over… It’s all over…”

The buildings containing the anti-aircraft emplacements are now engulfed in flames as the dark, early morning skies are dyed red from the flames of the burning capital. The bridges connecting the capital to the outside were replaced by thick smoke. Looking up at the bright, red sky, Jagner could only feel despair and hopelessness. There, more than 200 dragons and 500 parachutes dotted the heavens.

“A counterattack by the otherworlders…”

He can’t help but feel the ferocious will these small nations must have had to band together and attack them with their overwhelming numbers. Seeing some of the parachutes land, hopelessness had completely wrapped over him.

“The radio…”

“Yes, sir!”

Their heavy weaponry were crushed by an overwhelmingly superior enemy while their conventional forces were snuffed out by the massive numbers of their foes. It was clear to anyone that the situation was beyond repair. Jagner made his decision.

“This is vice chief Jagner of the Gra Valkan Hinomawari Empire Subjugation Authority calling out to the Japan Self Defense Force! We surrender! I repeat! We surrender!”

In response, the Japanese army sent out an OK. The following moment, however, saw a signal flare race across the sky. The bright flare shone over the burning capital as they flew over.

“What’s that?”

A familiar plane appeared in the reddish sky.

Jagner’s eyes widened.

Among the large swathes of dragons in the sky flew Japan’s special air units (attack helicopters) In the midst of all that, an Imperial aircraft flew towards them from the east.

“The Starcloud! Is that Olle Butz?! Why hasn’t that bastard left yet?! Wait, no, no, no, no!!! FUCKING OLLE BUTZ!!!”

The Starcloud was flying straight for the group of dragons. An attack from them just after they surrendered was the worst thing that they could pull off. The plane was clearly on the warpath.

With the camouflaged control tower destroyed, Olle Butz was unable to reach out to the other bases. Having the keys to the storage hangar, he finally decided to take on the enemy. As the enemy seemed to already be moving to their next phase of operation, they did not see the fast plane coming straight at them. Confident that he could get the plane up, Olle Butz took off, turned around, and began firing mindlessly into the mass of enemies gathered above Harunagakyō. If he continues on his way, he thought that he could somehow still return back to occupied Leifor. Feeling that he was safe in his fast aircraft, he opted to try and down some of the easier to shoot wyverns before deciding to break off and escape.

Vroooooooooo

The high-pitched sound of an engine noise getting louder could be heard. Gaining speed, the Starcloud fired its autocannons at the wyverns on guard.

Tatatatatatatat

“NOOOOOO!!!”

Jagner shouted with all that he could. However, life was merciless and reality wasn’t as sweet. The bullets found their marks on a wyvern and its rider, causing them to fall out of the sky.

Soon after that happened, one of the enemy special air units unleashed a rocket, which followed the Starcloud around. After a sharp explosion, the Starcloud was engulfed in flames before slowly crashing onto the ground.

・・・

3rd Wyvern Squadron, Nigrat Union, above Harunagakyō

A signal flare went up, signalling the surrender of the enemy.

“Even the feared Gra Valkas Empire surrendered so readily before Japan, huh…”

3rd Wyvern Squadron commander Dall muttered to himself. With their forces all over the sky, they now have total air supremacy. Even the cannons that were called anti-aircraft guns were now silent after being bombed by the Japanese.

“Hm?”

A lone aircraft approached them. It was clearly about to attack.

“Derka! Get out of the way!!!”

The moment he shouted through the manacomms, the enemy unleashed a hail of bullets. Derka and his wyvern were hit, reducing them to lifeless corpses falling out of the sky.

“Derka!!! Derkaaaaa!!!!! Motherfuckers!!! An attack after surrendering, huh?!?!”

As rage flew through his blood vessels, tears welled up in his eyes. While Derka may have been clumsy, owing to his youth, he was a bright, happy-go-lucky bastard. Just a while ago he couldn’t stop bragging about his newborn child…

“Motherfuckers! What the hell should I say to his fucking wife?!”

Soon after, the enemy plane was easily shot down by the Japanese aircraft with them. However, he couldn’t hold back his rage as the black, burning hunk of metal plumetted from the sky, echoing the darkness that welled up from his soul.

“You’ll pay for this…”

It can be said that the casualty they sustained was fortunate since they went against the empire after all. However, he can’t help but feel angry at his subordinate being dismissed as a lone figure in the death toll. The location of the enemy headquarters was already known to them beforehand along with the possibility of an underground base.

“The price we paid for minimizing the casualties on the Hinomawari people, who have sided with the enemy, was Derka… Why the fuck do we have to consider these bastards?!”

He made up his mind.

“All units! The enemy has launched an attack despite their surrender! We cannot let them kill more of us!!!”

If only we didn’t know of how much these people suffered… If only we didn’t care… Derka would have been alive!!!

“Naturally, there’s still a chance the enemy could attack us! BURN THE ENEMY HEADQUARTERS TO THE GROUND!!!”

He turned off his manacomms.

“We must… We must cleanse the filth!!!”

Among the wyverns flying in the sky, 120 wyverns from the Nigrat Union began to dive into the capital. One by one they unleashed their magic flame bullets on the enemy headquarters, engulfing the building and its surroundings in flames. Even the Hinomawari royal castle wasn’t spared.

On that day, everyone in the Subjugation Authority underground command room was killed either through sustaining fatal burns or through suffocation. Jagner himself was killed from a direct hit from a magic flame bullet. 279 Hinomawari civlians were killed due to the relentless attacks by from the Nigrat wyverns.

・・・

Ministry of Defense, Japan

“The Gra Valkan forces in the Hinomawari Kingdom have been annihilated. Since the Gra Valkans launched an attack after their surrender, it appears that the Second Civilization Union Army had conducted a sweep of the remaining Gra Valkan forces in the capital.”

“Okay then. Move to Stage 2 of the operation.”

“Understood. Relaying to all units to commence the operation…”

Mitsugi watched over the progress of the operation. Whether out of excitement, he noticed himself trembling.

“Oi, why are you shaking?”

One of his colleagues called out to him.

“I’m just nervous… They may think that they’re safe but… With this, they’ll soon feel that their own lives are in danger.”

Mitsugi stared at the screen as sweat formed on his forehead.

・・・

Enuvia Airbase, Mu

P-1s, BP-3Cs, F-15s, and F-2s lined up on the runway began to take off one after the other. Since Enuvia Airbase couldn’t handle all their aircraft, other airbases nearby hosted them and the same thing was happened there as well. The Japan Air Self Defense Force was once more kicking into gear.

Forming into their formation in the sky, the planes all flew west. Targets were promptly and accurately designated to each plane as they flew closer and closer to them.
