Chapter 24: Silverfish and Master's horrible tea

<Previous

Next>

And so, my days of training began as grandpa’s, Master's disciple!

Winter is getting close!

A futon of brown leaves hides the ground beneath once colorful trees.

<<Hey, Emmy! Concentrate please! We’re going to fall again!>>

Un, I hear you, it’s fine it’s fine.

I carefully lift up my right foot, take one step farther and secure it again…

As you can see, yes, I'm walking up the wall right now.

It’s [silverfish] training.

Already walking on walls!? Some people might be surprised, but this is a world with magical power!

Once you understand the principle, wall walking is not that difficult a skill!

<<No, even if you understand the principle, ordinary people can’t master it so quickly? After all, Emmy, you have a good aptitude for magical power manipulation, or rather, you’re a genius at it.>>

Fufu~n! What, what, Omake-sama! Even if you flatter me, you won’t get anything~?

<<…If you get ahead of yourself like that…>>

The next moment, my left foot lost its hold on the wall, leaving my body without support, and I fell to the floor. Ouch (tears).

<<I told you to concentrate, didn’t I?>>

Omake-sama sighs.

Yes, I'm sorry…

With this ninja-like wall walking technique, [silverfish], the most important thing is to use magical power to "stick" the soles of my feet to the wall.

Just like that night when Master showed me [silverfish] for the first time.

My [magic vision] was able to grasp a magical power flow similar to [condensation] and [solidification] beneath Master’s feet while he was walking on the walls and ceiling.

In other words, sticking your foot to the wall and releasing it, that repetition of magical power operation is how [silverfish] is realized!

<<But, it’s easier said than done.>>

Yep.

This is pretty difficult.

It’s not just the effort to manipulate magical power; the physical control it takes to "stand and walk" vertically, against the force of gravity is also hard.

It’s not a technique you can learn overnight.

But I'm very happy that I’m able to do something that would normally be impossible.

I kept training and training, and by the time I looked around, it was already dark.

<<Master made dinner without even saying anything; he really does so much for you, huh?>>

Un, really…

Although he barely speaks and always looks angry, Master is really kind.

I mean, he’s seriously lenient with me.

So that his kindness won’t go to waste, I’ll work hard in training.

And soon after, it’s already bedtime.

This is about a week after starting my training.

◇ ◇ ◇

A little more time has passed since then, and the weather has been getting colder and colder.

Master’s hunting trips have gotten less frequent, replaced by housework indoors.

Well, when I peeked into it the other day, we had a considerable amount of dried meat stocked up in the storehouse.

Preparations for winter are coming along smoothly.

And I, fufun! I got a present from Master!

It’s the clothes I have on now!

He handed them over silently as usual, so I didn’t get any details, but it’s probably made from the fur of that reaper wolf that was chasing me the day we met.

The pitch-black fur is stiff, but warm and looks cool!

Thank you, Master!

Wearing that black fur outfit, right now I'm crawling around the walls and ceiling.

Un, I realized.

It was difficult because I was trying to cling to the wall on just two legs.

The technique is called [silverfish], right?

Then, just like the real thing, it should be fine to use my whole body to stick to the wall!

<<Real thing? Huh? Emmy, did I ever teach you about the Great Spirit Beast Silverfish?>>

Nope, I don’t know it, I don’t know it… I never heard anything about any Great Spirit Beast… I only know about the unpleasant pests from my previous life… they were playing around on the walls in my room all the time.

Well, anyway.

What I’m doing is increasing the surface area that touches the wall so that a wider area of me is actually holding on, making it easier to stick.

Furthermore, it’s less difficult to move my body in this position.

Now I can crawl across the walls and ceiling with some speed!

On that note, I scuttle my way over to a corner of the ceiling where Master can see me above the handicraft he’s working on, and I appeal how capable I am!

…Master takes one look at me and shakes his head.

It seems to be useless if I don't stand up properly on two legs…

This is about two weeks after starting my training.

◇ ◇ ◇

And now!

It's been about a month since this training started.

My current progress is that now I can move on walls and ceilings quite freely while standing! Clap clap!

At the moment, I’m waking up from a midday nap on the ceiling.

…Yeah, worlds with magic are seriously amazing.

I can’t believe with just one month of training, such a fantasy lifestyle would be so simple to achieve…!

<<No, Emmy, can you call that easy? You're doing something that’s probably considerably difficult, right? I think if it wasn’t you, other people might not be able to do it even if they had a year, you know?>>

No, no, Omake-sama, no matter how hard it is, you’re giving me too much credit, right?

But, hmm, honestly, other than Master, I've never had a decent relationship with anybody, so I don't know at all what an average person is in this world and what kind of ability they have…

However, what’s clear is that, for example, if a person at Master’s level seriously tries to kill me, I’d get killed in less than three seconds, without even a chance to run.

I’m still weak.

Master hasn't taught me [mantis] or other battle-useful techniques yet…

<<That person is quite out of the ordinary. Don't think about him as standard…>>

Un? Master’s entrance breaks off my chat with Omake-sama.

In his hand he has two warm, steaming cups.

Looks like he brewed tea.

…Yes, not only does Master cook dinner for me, he also brews tea.

It’s too much!

No matter how much I look like a child, I shouldn’t leave everything to him!

Thinking that helping out with the tea was a good place to start, I tried, but Master was adamant in not letting me touch his tea set.

On the contrary, when I went to open the cupboard that had the tea leaves on my own, he hit me with a violent [intimidation].

I almost had to change my pants from that.

…Is brewing tea his hobby?

But then why is the tea that Master brews so horrible…

His tea is so bitter and repulsive, I feel nauseous just remembering it.

I can’t complain though, since he puts the effort in to brew it for me, so I don’t say anything and keep drinking.

Anyway, Master is waiting, so I kick off the ceiling and flip down to the floor.

A splendid landing!

So cool, right?

<<In the beginning, you messed up so many times and crashed on your head. Why do you keep adding unnecessary flips?>>

It’s fine!

I have [body strengthening] so I won't get hurt!

This kind of acrobatics is romance!

Well, even if it’s a pointless movement? Practicing it was a good distraction within my days of nonstop training.

With quick steps, I approach Master, and we sit facing each other on the floor, taking occasional sips.

Un, yet another revolting flavor of tea.

But it doesn't smell foul, so it's at least better than the naked nasty rat.

"……Your stomach doesn’t hurt?"

That’s unusual; Master spoke to me.

Un, the tea sucks, to be honest, but I'm more used to it now compared to when I first had it.

No problems here.

I nod in reply.

The two of us continue to drink our tea in silence.

Although the fireplace has a steady flame, not much heat is trapped in this drafty house.

Warmth seeps through my cold body every time I raise the mug to my lips.

After he sees me empty the last of my tea, Master utters another phrase.

"……[Silverfish], well done."

......Eh!? Sudden compliment!? Thank you!?

"……Next."

Master turns his back on me, still surprised, climbs the wall using [silverfish], and stands upside down on the ceiling.

Then, he bends his knees, gains momentum in an instant and jumps straight to the floor!

Wait, Master!?

Do you want to plunge headfirst into the floor!?

However, contrary to my worries, Master twists around and lands cleanly on the floor.

Just that is already amazing.

Although he should have smashed through the ground, the wooden floorboards, where just walking is enough to hear a creak, don’t even have a scratch, much less a hole.

I mean.

There was no sound.

It was as if a feather had fallen softly.

Without generating any impact.

Master touched down on the floor.

"…Once you can do this, you can practice [grasshopper]."

Saying only that, Master walks back out of the room.

I’m left stunned after the sudden display.

From outside the cabin, the echoes of Master chopping firewood resound.

For now, I.

It looks like I’ve got a new task.
