Chapter 28: Learning grasshopper

<Previous

Right now, I’m standing in the small clearing in front of Master’s house.

The frigid air stings at my skin.

Peeking its face little by little up over the mountains, the morning sun begins to brighten my view.

I raise my right and left hands in front of me.

And with as much strength as I can, I slap them together.

Paan!

The clap echoes undisturbed through the mountains’ dawn tranquility.

Alright, next.

I hold up both my hands again.

This time, I focus on magical power conversion.

I clap my hands with all my might.

…Silence.

With [magic vision] active, I can see magical power replace the impact generated between my palms, before diffusing to the surroundings and eventually disappearing.

It's been a week since I realized the possibility of magical power conversion.

Finally, I successfully removed the sound from a clap.

◇ ◇ ◇

Once I got that far, everything else followed quickly.

Eliminating the impact from clapping and eliminating the impact from falling from the ceiling are basically the same thing.

So after several practice runs, I demonstrated my own “soundless landing” in front of Master.

Master nodded his head and led me outside.

We ended up stopping in front of a huge tree.

In this world, huge trees aren’t that uncommon.

Even ones at the level that they would have been revered as sacred trees in my previous life are practically overgrowing here.

So, I can pretty much guess the reason you’ve brought me to this one, Master.

I have to do it again, this time from the top of the tree.

Let’s get right to it then.

In conclusion, it wasn't too difficult, but it was harder to disperse the impact than from the ceiling.

Apparently, the more severe the impact, the more challenging it is to convert to magical power.

From there, Master steadily increased the height I had to jump from, and now, we’ve come to a steep cliff for my final test.

Which brings us back to two chapters ago, where I had just jumped off and am currently plummeting towards the ground.

◇ ◇ ◇

As if I had been here from the start, I land.

Above towers the edge of the cliff I had been standing on until a few seconds ago.

The entire force from the impact has been converted to magical power and spread until it vanished.

I did go down to one knee, but this much is fine, right, Master?

Ah, he’s nodding. He’ll allow it!

<<Ha, haaaaaaaaaaa…… that was so scaryyyyyyy……!>>

Come on, Omake-sama, it wasn’t that bad… But still, sorry for putting you through that…

<<It’s kind of addicting, though. Can we go again?>>

What are you, a girl hooked on thrill rides!

"……"

Ah, Master’s saying something.

When I turned to him, Master lightly crouches, then kicks off the ground to jump into the sky.

And sticks the landing.

…Aah, that’s right, it’s [grasshopper].

That’s what I’ve been doing all this training for.

<<You got so caught up in tangents that you forgot, huh?>>

Sh, Shut up!

I did not!

Refocusing, I should also try [grasshopper].

[Grasshopper] is a combination of several skills.

[Solidification] reinforces the ground, you create a repulsive force while jumping with [body strengthening] to propel yourself up.

And when you land, magic conversion kills the impact.

Smoothly executing each of these in succession is the key to [grasshopper].

I explode up with my full strength.

In no time, my body soars into the sky.

…I can’t quite reach the same altitude as Master though.

My upward momentum decreases, and after a momentary fluffy sensation, the laws of physics drag me back down.

I remember, two months ago, this is where I embarrassed myself by getting overcome with fear and fainting.

But things are different now!

Breathing steadily, I grasp tightly onto my consciousness, and noiselessly, I hit the ground!

The collision softly floats away in the form of magical power.

"……"

I check for Master’s reaction.

"……"

Master meets my gaze.

"……From there, it’s just experience."

Saying that, Master turns on his heel and begins the trek back home.

Ah, that means my [grasshopper] was good enough for now, right?

…Yes. Yes, yes yeesssssss~!

I’m so happy!

It was way harder to figure out the method this time, so I’m just brimming with joy right now!

Let’s goooooooooooooooo~!

Master casts a glance back at me while I inwardly celebrate.

Not breaking his stride, he casually swings down a hand sword onto one of the nearby boulders.

The large stone falls in two directions, separated cleanly as if it had been sliced by a sharp blade.

"……[Mantis]."

Leaving just the name of the technique, Master walks off.

…It’s a new assignment.

For the time being, let me just say this.

Master, please stop doing things out of nowhere like that.

I’ll have a heart attack.
