The next day after the incident with the roof tiles…

The rain that started last night was still pouring down, beating on the mansion’s roof. Sara-chan was a little unhappy since she couldn’t go outside in this weather. But well, I wouldn’t let her go outside even if it were a sunny day, considering what happened yesterday.

And so.

I was watching Sara-chan studying from behind.

Usually, around this time in the morning, I would be doing housework with Meiido-senpai. (note 1) But understandably, that was not happening today after what happened yesterday.

As a precaution, Baron-sama secretly instructed me to stay close to Sara-chan as her guard.

This means that about yesterday’s incident with the falling roof tiles.…

Baron-sama must have also considered the possibility that the culprit might be someone from within the family.

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have thought of assigning a guard within the mansion. Which should already be protected from outsiders by the barrier.

The forced smile Baron-sama showed last night might be the way he hid the discomfort of suspecting someone within the household.

“…Now then, let’s review from yesterday, Sara-chan. The Zakzark mine boasts the highest production of magic ore in our kingdom. Where is it located?”

“U-Uhm… The Marmouke Count’s fief…?” (note 2)

“…Incorrect. It’s in the Deswah Duchy. You see, the eldest daughter of Deswah Duchy, Lady Izywar, is the same age as you…. You might become a friend with her later at school. Imagine if you meet her and you know nothing about the Duchy… That would be rude, right? So, make sure to remember it, okay?” (note 3 and 4)

Sara-chan was struggling as she studies the geography with the Baroness.

… About the incident yesterday, Sara-chan was only told that it was an accident.

It was Baron-sama’s consideration to not frighten her unnecessarily.

However, this energetic baron’s daughter…

She might be able to get deceived for today since it’s raining, but we couldn’t keep her restrained forever with the excuse of “you can’t go outside.”

Maybe in a few days, she would reach her limit of patience and began to act rashly.

Something like secretly going out to play.

She was a bit of an idiot, after all.

<That’s why, at least regarding the perpetrator of the roof tile incident, we need to swiftly find and restrain them!>

…Omake-sama, why are you getting a little excited?

<A young lady and her mother, both targeted for their lives! The culprit must be someone close to them, within the mansion! The hidden love and hate beneath those smiles…! I’ve seen this kind of situation in Detective God’s Isekai Reincarnation Broadcast!?>

Oh, the situation seemed like a mystery story, so you were getting excited, huh?

Honestly, as someone who gets employed at the mansion, even as a short-term employee, I don’t have the luxury to enjoy such things at all! But I do agree that we need to catch the culprit quickly.

<Yes! That’s why I’ve been deducing since last night! Who could the culprit be…!>

Hmm. So, Omake-sama, do you have a lead on the culprit?

<No, unfortunately… There are some suspicious people, but we have no evidence. However, I believe that organizing information about the mansion’s residents again while Emmy is acting as Sara-chan’s guard wouldn’t be a waste of time…>

Alright, I understand, Omake-sama. Then, why don’t you let me hear your deduction SHOW? Of course, while I keep guarding Sara-chan, though!

***

<First of all, we can exclude two people from our suspect list. The baron’s daughter, Sara Salah, and Lady Ima Salah, the Baroness.>

Yeah, the attack on the carriage and the incident with the roof tiles were probably aimed at one of these two. We don’t know which one is the actual target or if both of them are the target.

<Next, let’s talk about Baron Marz Salah…>

There’s no way Baron-sama is the culprit, right? He’s the family member of the two targets.

I’m sure he genuinely loves his wife and daughter. Not like… my trashy and despicable family.

… Ah, the Baroness glanced over here. My intimidating aura must have leaked out accidentally and activated my [Intimidation] by accident.
It was nothing, nothing happened…

<Or rather, if he was the culprit, he wouldn’t ask Emmy to protect Sara-chan. Besides, I also believe that the Baron is not the culprit. However…>

However?

<Even though he has heard about Emmy’s abilities from the baroness and the other maids. But the fact of him hiring a street child that suddenly appeared as a bodyguard, feels a bit weird. Especially one with black hair and black eyes.>

Uhm, now you said it…

Sad, but people with black hair and black eyes usually get driven out of villages (speaking from personal experience).

If I should say, in this mansion, it seemed like the steward with a sinister look attitude towards a cursed child was the one with a normal response.

<There might be some underlying reasons behind his decision. But I don’t think it’s related to the current incidents. I won’t delve further into this speculation.>

Speaking of which, I feel like there might be a chance to learn more about the situation if I ask.

I’ll try to find the right moment for that.

<Now, let’s talk about the maid, Meiido>

I remember during the carriage attack, Meiido-senpai was also with Sarah and the others, right?

I don’t think she is the culprit.

<What about if she faked being attacked? And then after it was all over, the thieves spare her. That might have happened…>

Ehh!?

<That’s just a possibility. But it’s not entirely impossible, right?>

Uhmmm… But you know, Omake-sama.

Based on my observation, Meiido-senpai seems like an ordinary maid who’s good at cleaning.

She doesn’t seem particularly strong. I’ve also never seen her intentionally using any [Body Strengthening] techniques….

Even the roof shingle from yesterday is quite the heavy stuff. I can’t imagine her having an easy time dropping that from above.

I still think it’s difficult to believe that Meiido-senpai is the culprit.

<… Perhaps that maid is hiding her true abilities.>

No way, no way, that can’t be true.

What’s going on? Why is Omake-sama suspecting Meiido-senpai?

<Well, it’s a common trope in the Isekai Reincarnation Broadcast that maids are actually assassins!>

That’s just prejudice!!

<By the way, about the servant, Moub…> (note 5)

Stop treating him as an afterthought…

Sure, he is a plain middle-aged man, but still.

<This person actually fainted when attacked by bandits during the carriage assault. Unlike that maid, I don’t think that was just an act.>

Grr, Omake-sama, you’re too fixated on the idea of the Meiido-senpai being the mastermind!

Prejudice is not good!

<But, he is a man, and he seems to have enough strength to drop a board from the roof.>

If we’re going by that logic, doesn’t that apply to that stern-faced steward as well?

Come to think of it, ‘Have the strength to drop a shingle from the roof’ is the requirement. If we exclude the baron, the suspects that fulfill the requirement would be only Moub-san and the stern-faced steward, right?

<Ah->

[Ah-]?! What do you mean?

What about your deduction since last night…!?

<Cough, cough! Moving on to Sneigen, the manor steward. This person wasn’t involved in the carriage attack and has enough strength to drop a board from the roof.>

And his personality is so terrible!

Always saying ‘my lady, my lady’ and belittling the baron. It feels like there might be some conflict between them.

<However, you see? Whether it’s the carriage attack or the roof board incident, if it weren’t for Emmy, it could have hurt the Baroness. Do you think that the steward, who loves the lady so much, would do something like that?>

Well, yeah…

And considering how Sneigen usually behaves, although he has a bad personality, he works diligently.

I don’t think he would deliberately lower his job quality… Or do something to harm Sara-chan and the others.

Ugh- in the end, who is the culprit?

Thinking about it doesn’t help!

<In that case, I will still stick to the ‘The maid that was hiding her true abilities is the culprit!’ I believe in the theory of ‘Maid was the Strongest’!>

What kind of theory is that?!

Hmm… you know, Omake-sama.

I’ve been thinking about this.

<Yes, what is it, Emmy?>

Since we haven’t been close to the members of the baron’s family. We can’t even imagine any motive that would lead them to commit the crime.

<I see>

And we don’t have any evidence either.

<True>

So, even if we think about it all we want, wouldn’t that be just wild speculation rather than deduction?

<…………>

… Omake-sama?

<…………*pout*>

Don’t sulk!!

Omake-sama’s deductions were more useless than I thought, and they didn’t help solve the case at all.

Well, I was not a detective, but a bodyguard. I should not overthink and just focus on protecting Sara-chan!

Yup, I decided to follow that.

Author Note: Omake-sama is a support character, but she is a little useless.

Translation Note:

Meiido-senpai: Her name is メイード. A pun(?) wordplay(?) from maid/meido (メイド) Marmouke (マルモーケ): Once again wordplay from Marumouke (まるもうけ・丸儲け). If translated to English, it means ‘Clear Profit/Great Profit’. Deswah (デスワー): Desuwaa~ Something that is usually said by some Noble Lady. Google it, I can’t explain desuwa~ Lady Izywar (イジワール): Again, wordplay from Ijiwaru (いじわる・意地悪). It means malicious; unkind; ill-tempered; mean; nasty. Expect that Lady from Deswah Duchy to have a mean personality. (I don’t know though, I have not read the raw) The Servant Moub (モーブ): In the previous translation he was translated as Mauve. That was not a bad name, but looking at the list of wordplay that we have, his name should be a wordplay too. He was also explained as a plain middle-aged man, so I think it comes from the word ‘Mob’ (モブ).

I may have other that I missed or maybe one (or more) of the note I made was wrong. If someone noticed, feel free to correct me. Correct me too if I made mistake on the translation.
