Chapter 83 – Result of the Match Against Kamasse

Yoshanka was always under cloudy skies.

It was something that Sara-chan… the former Sara-chan, talked about when we were chatting.

Looks like it was quite a famous tale.
Today, the sky was certainly cloudy again.

Looking over the sea, the clouds were tinged with red, and the dazzling light leaked through the gaps.

Sunset.
I was at the main gate of Yoshanka.

Having safely collected the desired herbs and returned to town as planned… for some reason, I was scolded by Kamasse?

“Late!!”
The moment Kamasse saw me returning from the forest with a small jog (though I was using [Grasshopper], so it was quite fast), he blurted out those words.
“Listen well. Requests given to adventurers usually come with deadlines! Skilled adventurers usually complete requests with plenty of time to spare! It’s for the clients as well! In other words, coming back at the last possible moment like this shows that your time management skills are inferior, and that makes me the winner!”
… Yeah, I get the point he’s trying to make in the first half.

Being punctual, meeting deadlines… those are important things.

But the last part completely ruins it, Kamasse.

Actually, I had completely forgotten about the competition Kamasse challenged me to until he started bickering with me just now.
“Kamasse, did you get the herbs?”
To avoid more of his scolding or even him showing off, I changed the topic.
“Oh? Just who do you think I am? If it’s me, Kamasse-sama, then gathering herbs is a piece of cake! Watch and learn!!”
He said that with a forceful tone, but his movements were delicate and precise as he took out several herbs from the backpack he was carrying and lined them up on the ground.
“Listen well. This small grass at the far right, this is Uru Grass! It’s an herb used for insect repellent, easy to find and has a low purchase price, but it’s not some herb to be underestimated by beginners like you! Those who mock Uru Grass will be brought to tears by Uru Grass! Remember that! Next, this grass with spots and a slender shape…”
Kamasse’s explanation of the herbs began.

Despite his rough tone, his explanation was incredibly detailed, and the content was very informative from an adventurer’s perspective.
“… And so, do you understand now? I have extensively studied the knowledge of herbs necessary for my activities as an adventurer, and not only that, I have broad knowledge extending to various monster materials! Therefore, it’s self-evident that I am superior to the likes of you, and thus, in this competition, I am the victor!”
«… It would have been fine if he had stopped before that last statement»
An exasperated sigh escaped me in my thoughts.

“Speaking of which, how did you do? What did you collect? You, a cursed child who doesn’t possess any knowledge of herbs, I doubt you obtained anything and was just wandering around the forest!”
Hmm? Did Kamasse not hear that I need to gather Saiishu grass as the ‘task’ from that receptionist?
«This boy was struggling and bound to the floor back then. He probably doesn’t remember the details.»
As I conversed with Omake-sama, I took the Saiishu Grass out of the backpack.

This time, I collected three smaller plants.

There were many more bigger plants at that place, but this time, I prioritized not damaging them and packed them carefully in my backpack. So I chose the smaller ones.

My goal isn’t so much to earn money with Saiishu Grass, but rather to complete the ‘task’ and get my adventurer’s license.
“What?! Is… is this Saiishu Grass?!”
Seeing what I took out of the backpack, Kamasse’s eyes widened, and he trembled.

Given Kamasse’s extensive knowledge, he probably knows about Saiishu Grass too.
“No way! No way no way no way! The natural habitat of the Saiishu grass in the Kaise Forest overlaps with the dangerous zone inhabited by Lovely Bunnies! You! Are you injured!? Are you okay!? What about the Lovely Bunnies!?”
“I defeated them.”
“You defeated them!? Those monsters are supposed to be taken down by a party of 4th-grade or higher adventurers with proper equipment! ….. Well, I have to admit, your combat skills are high.,,, It might be possible for you to defeat them… But what about the head!?”
“Head?”
“The proof of the kill! If you bring their heads to the guild, you can get a reward, especially for Lovely Bunnies! Damn, you don’t even know anything like that!”
“I ate them.”
“Why the heck did you eat their heads!?”
“I was hungry.”
“Eat something other than their heads!”
“I ate everything else too!”
“You ate everything!? You devoured that huge monster whole!? How much of a big eater are you!?”
“I ate five of them.”
“As I said, how much of a big eater are you!?
*growl….*
“It was still not enough!? You still want to eat!? Or rather… humph! Cut back on the lies, cursed child!”
At this point, Kamasse noticed something and made a mocking expression toward me.
“It’s not a lie.”
“Your clothes are way too clean! There isn’t a speck of blood on them! You’re wearing that outfit to take down Lovely Bunnies!? My eyes won’t be deceived!”
“I washed them.”
“Just washing won’t get rid of the bloodstains!”
Actually, they do.

If you soak them in a stream and use [Separation], they become clean quite easily.

Then if you use [Drying], wet clothes dry quickly.

…Speaking of which.
I glanced at the setting sun over the sea.

The sun had sunk even further since earlier, and the light from the evening sun leaking through the clouds had significantly diminished.

Night would be here soon.
“Kamasse, I want to go to the Adventurer’s Guild quickly.”
I put the Saiishu Grasses back to my backpack while saying that.
“The match? Who won?”
“Uhh…”
Kamasse stumbled over his words.

This competition was about the value of the herbs we collected, right?
“My herbs come in various types, and they can meet various demands! I also have plenty of them! I’m also well-versed in various medicinal herbs and have a wealth of knowledge!”
Kamasse muttered while looking at the herbs he had lined up on the ground, struggling.
“Then, Kamasse win. Kamasse’s knowledge, really amazing. Kammase is an excellent adventurer.”
“Of, Of course! But- But…..!”
I think Kamasse’s attitude toward the adventuring business and his in-depth knowledge, which could be seen in every word he says, were things that I could really respect.

So I sincerely praised him for that.

Though, his personality that always want to be on top of other could be somewhat off-putting.

To be honest, I didn’t really care about the competition, so I’d like to just call it a win for Kamasse and get out of here.
But it seems that Kamasse couldn’t accept it that way.
“If you want to talk about value and price…”
While trembling.

“Saiishu grass! That kind of, and there were three, gathered, then…!”
He squeezed the words out.
“It’s your-!! Win!! Cursed… You cursed child!!!!!!!!!!!”
Saying that, Kamasse rolled his eyes back and fainted.

He fell backward while still standing, his body twitching.
«He doesn’t like to admit defeat, so he faints… a hardcore competitive person, isn’t he?»
And yet, Kamasse conducts the competition fairly.

He’s annoying, but I can’t hate him.

Oh, the gatekeeper dragged Kamasse inside and started closing the gate.

Wait, wait! I’m going in too!
I hurriedly entered the town and left Kamasse behind, heading straight for the Adventurer’s Guild branch.

The gatekeeper uncle was keeping an eye on him, so he should be fine.

◇ ◇ ◇

“Can you prove that you gathered this Saiishu grass yourself?”
Huh?
“You probably stole it from another adventurer party, didn’t you? It’s no surprise. A cursed child like you being light-fingered.”
Huh?
“I will take this. I will return this Saiishu grass to its rightful gatherers, so I’ll hold onto it.”
Huh?
“Since it’s your first offense, we won’t involve the guards. Now, give it to me, quickly.”
Huh?

And this was the exchange I had with the female receptionist after I headed to the guild full of a sense of accomplishment and submitted the Saiishu grass to the receptionist for my “task”.

Just like a flowing water, I was promptly dismissed from the reception counter line, leaving me utterly dumbfounded.

……………………

Huh?
