I had to take a few deep breaths after returning to the sect. The Sect Master had noticed me and was talking but I could not hear her, my ears were ringing from the conversation I had just had.

“Just, hold on!” I said, which caused me further pain. I found a place to sit down and collapsed. There was a blanket nearby that I wrapped around myself, revelling in the darkness. I lay still for a while, thankfully the Sect Master had heeded my request and stayed silent.

Eventually I peeled the blanket off my head and looked around. The soft colours of the room allowed my eyes to adjust quickly and without pain. Eventually, the wonderfully oval face of the Sect Master entered my vision. She wore a concerned look.

She had changed her clothes into a light gown that hugged her soft curves. I begrudgingly got up from my comfortable isolation. “I’m sorry, Sect Master. I did not want to be rude.”

She shuffled around on a chair. “No one’s talked to me like that for quite some time,” she noted with a small smile.

“Let me know if you like the change of pace.” I was about to lean back when I realised I had probably commandeered her sofa. “Would you like your sofa back?” I asked.

“Why don’t we share?” she said with a sultry smile as she got up and sat down next to me.

“Whatever you say,” I conceded with an expression similar to hers. She looked at me with a slight flush.

“Is everything alright?” I asked.

“Yes of course, only… You’re quite passionately holding onto my robe.” I looked down and sure enough the blanket I had been using was in fact the clothes she’d changed out of.

“I thought it was a blanket,” I said sheepishly as I handed it back to her. When she heard what I said she turned around and handed me what looked to be a proper blanket. “Thank you,” I said.

“That’s quite alright,” she replied, relaxing a little into the back of the sofa. I threw the blanket over my legs and leaned to the side to cover hers too. “I must say, I thought you would be a little more… Haughty?” she admitted.

“Give me an excuse,” I teased, to which she smiled.

“I will endeavour not to.” She crossed her arms. “What did you see in there?” she asked suddenly. I could tell she’d been holding the question back for a while.

“It’s a private domain.”

“Who governs it?” she prodded.

“It is referred to in many ways. But it is difficult and unpredictable, so I just call it Chaos.”

“Why didn’t you ask for it’s name?” she asked.

“You should never try to lead a conversation with it. Not unless you want it to either kill you, or worse, ignore you.”

“Why would being ignored be worse?” she asked with a tiny frown.

“Because then you’re stuck, and that is not somewhere you want to be stuck.”

“I see,” she said. “Have you met them before? In one of your previous lives perhaps?”

“Only briefly, the first time I died.”

“Sounds like a terrifying being,” she shuddered.

“As long as you’re careful, it’s actually quite charming.”

She slowly lifted her legs under the blanket and placed them delicately on my lap. Her calves popped with muscle but she was relaxed so they felt smooth and soft. “Maybe you’re the charming one,” she giggled.

“There’s my excuse!” I said as faux dread filled her face.

“What have I done?” She placed the back of her hand to her forehead dramatically. We laughed a little before I arrived at the important question.

“Sect Master, do you know who Milly is?”

“Milly?” she repeated. “I have no idea, I’m afraid.”

“Milly is the reason the door exists, Chaos has been expecting a visit from them.”

“Sounds like we have a mystery on our hands,” she mused with a curious smile.

“Seems so.”

“Besides that, I’ve found that I’d like to spend more time with you. How does that sound?”

“I understand Sect Master, I will help provide the Sect with…

“That’s not what I meant,” she interrupted me quickly. “I mean, I really would like to spend more time with you.”

“Then, I know where to find you.”

“You do,” she smiled shyly. “Ah but, you could also help the Sect.” I laughed at that.

“Of course, you can have whatever you want from me.” To that she nodded in approval.

She lifted her legs off me slowly. “Come and see me tomorrow?” she asked.

I got up and straightened my robe. “If you ask nicely.”

“Please?” she corrected herself immediately.

“I’ll come when I can.”

She pouted a little but agreed. I exited the smoky room, waving to the surprised disciple on the way out. It seemed that it was really that unbelievable that I would survive. Their expression told me they expected never to see me again.

I bounded down the stairs, excited to see the one responsible for saving my life. It took me no time at all to find my cave, I completely ignored all the surprised looks that people were giving me.

I pushed the door open and instantly three individual pairs of eyes snapped towards me. “You…!” Safi jumped up and lurched towards me. “You made it!” she cried with tears in her eyes. She suddenly stopped in front of me, seemingly reconsidering the embrace. She looked up at me and I could tell how desperately she wanted to hug me.

I smiled and lifted my arms, beckoning her forward. Her face melted as she launched herself into my arms, she latched her legs around my waist so that I was carrying her entirely.

I held her tight, letting her empty her tears onto my shoulder. She eventually lowered her legs to the floor, she reluctantly let go of me with her arms too, only to let Chit give me a hug. Chit’s eyes were a little puffy from crying but the smile on her beautiful face was contagious enough that even Safi got infected by it.

Eleb was last, she gave me a hug too. She held me far tighter than the other two to the point where I thought she might have been trying to pop me. She was the only one actually studying a strength technique and her muscular and tempered body represented that.

“Things are going to change from now on,” I said. I felt the atmosphere turn heavy, they knew it as well as I did. “I’ve been enjoying myself too much anyway.”

“I’ve been slacking off,” admitted Eleb. “Ever since someone called my technique crummy.”

I laughed at her obvious jab. “Let’s tend to that first.”

“Actually, first.” Began Eleb, she was giving the side eye to Safi. “I think your girlfriend needs more hugs.” I looked over at Safi to see that indeed, she required a lot more hugs.

It was not just hugs she needed though. “Thank you Safi, for saving my life and for being part of it. No amount of hugs will ever be enough to show you my gratitude.” I wrapped her up in my arms - glad that she had broken through the physical contact barrier.

“This is the second time I’ve saved your life,” she laughed into my chest.

“Put it on my tab.”

“Don’t make it a habit,” she chided.

“I’ll be sure not to.”

“Your life is mine to take, that’s what you said.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t forget, I just got carried away.”

“You remember that you promised me happiness?”

“I do remember that.”

She looked up at me with full and resolute eyes. “You’re my happiness.”

I smiled. “I love you too.”
