612 – Glimpse of the Ego

In the form of Eldia, of a diabolos, I swing the [Oneiros Mallet]. The hecatoncheir receives the blow with its body as usual, and then slashes its sword towards me.

With my bigger size, it’s easier for me to absorb the sword’s momentum as I block. The damage I’m taking doesn’t change much, but it’s easier for me to maintain my posture and immediately attack again.

I exchange blows with the hecatoncheir. After several exchanges, I end up receiving a heavy blow to my chin.

The longer we fight at point blank range without relying on skills, the more apparent the difference in our combat ability becomes. But, even though this is costing me a lot of MP now, I should be dealing proper damage.

Believing that, I check the hecatoncheir’s status. But, its MP again hasn’t decreased by as much as I’d hoped.

My damage has indeed increased. It was about two hundred with just my oneiros claws, then with the [Oneiros Mallet] it was about four hundred, and now with [Dragon Mirror] it’s increased to five hundred.

I’m doing over twice the damage I was at the start. But, that’s all. In the end, even when making full use of my skills, the damage rate is still far too poor. The hecatoncheir’s HP and MP maximums are both 10,000.

I throw the [Oneiros Mallet] at the hecatoncheir. It blocks with its sword, and the mallet sticks into the ground before quickly fading into motes of light.

…This isn’t working. The [Oneiros Mallet]’s defence reduction is effective, but it’s not enough for me to beat the hecatoncheir.

I use [Ideal Weapon] to produce a new weapon.

【[Oneiros Raizem]: Value L (Legendary)】
【[Attack: +240]】
【A greatsword that glitters with faint violet light.】
【Made from the fang of the [Dream Dragon] that rules over the world of dreams.】
【It is said that the boundary between reality and fiction will become vague for those cut by this sword, and they will be eventually brought to the world of dreams.】
【Temporarily lowers the [Illusion Resistance] of the cut target.】

…The [Illusion Resistance] reduction is useless against [Status Condition Nullification]. But, there are some skills that can’t be used without a sword.

I pour mana into the [Oneiros Raizem]. The blade begins to glow with holy light.

【Normal Skill [Flash That Drives Away the Darkness]】
【The sword is coated in holy light to cut the enemy.】
【Before this flash, all deception is meaningless.】
【All forms of damage reduction or nullification from resistance skills, characteristic skills, normal skills, or special conditions are ignored to deal massive damage to the target.】

With this skill, I should be able to bypass the maximum level [Physical Resistance] and [Physical Damage Halving] to deal significant damage. The hecatoncheir’s high defence stat will still remain, but the effect of these two resistance skills is huge. If I can bypass them, I should be able to deal good damage, even against the hecatoncheir.

But, this skill comes with flaws. While the sword is coated in holy light, it feels strangely heavy. Moreover, while it is a good counter for some enemies, the MP cost is considerable.

I also still have to get through its terrifyingly high defence and HP, so it’s not as though I’ll be able to take it down in just three or four hits.

As I draw close, the hecatoncheir shifts into shadow and moves away from me. It’s using [Shadow Dance] to retreat from a frontal attack!?

I was under the impression that it hated to use [Shadow Dance] very frequently. It’s a powerful skill, but also costs a reasonable amount of MP. If I can force it to use [Shadow Dance], then that isn’t a minus for me.

The hecatoncheir flees backwards. As I swing for a second time, it again runs away with [Shadow Dance]. It seems to be thoroughly committed to avoiding [Flash that Drives Away the Darkness]. I suppose it’s not a former Hero for nothing. It knows how powerful the skill is.

To maintain the light as it begins to fade, I pour more mana into my sword. Damn it! I’m just wasting MP!

『…Didn’t you have everything you were protecting taken away by God’s Voice!? Are you really okay with protecting their tower for thousands of years like this!?』

I swing for a third time, but it again dodges with [Shadow Dance].

『O… O, o…』

I only used [Telepathy] out of frustration, and wasn’t expecting a reply. And yet, I receive what feels like thoughts from the hecatoncheir. It doesn’t have [Telepathy], but my [Telepathy] is able to both send out thoughts, and to read the thoughts of others.

…No way, it still has a sense of self!?

『I, I have…a mission.』

The hecatoncheir changes stance. As it dodges my fourth slash with [Shadow Dance], it circles around to my blind spot. Damn it! I was sure it was going to dodge!

But my block should still make it in time!

『You will not pass.』

A far sharper stab than before slips past my attempt at a parry, and sinks into my chest.

“Gaah!”

Its swordsmanship has improved! I was already struggling, but apparently that was with its swordsmanship dulled by [God of Madness]. Calling out to it has unexpectedly backfired. I don’t know what exactly has caused this, but even though a portion of its ego remains, the hecatoncheir firmly believes itself to be the guardian of this place.

It’s a many-armed headless statue, but there’s an odd dignity to the firmness of its stance now. Damn it, I already didn’t have a way of breaking through!

『Is it your mission to be a dog of God’s Voice!?』

The hecatoncheir dodges my downward flash without using [Shadow Dance]. Immediately, its sword swings towards me. I let go of [Oneiros Raizem] and twist my body backwards, just barely managing to catch the sword with my claws.

This guy is seriously strong. If the hecatoncheir had evolved into an attacker type rather than an endurance type, I might have been killed without being able to do anything.
