Ch. 25

“Virago”

I have never seen Iamys move so fast after he lets me go. I brace my hands out in front of me, catching myself before I fall into what looks like a flowing creek below me. My palms catching some rocks in the water. Stings etching into them. A seep of red flows down through the stream. Coughs ring out from my lungs and liquid trickles down my mouth. My breathing is ragged but is getting steadier. Water is dripping off the tip of my nose and back into the creek below. My braided hair falls heavy to my side.

I feel a snarl resonance through my skull. The feeling of being exposed crawls up my spine.

I suddenly look to my left side, drawn to that direction. Leaning against a tree with his leg rested on it, typical. Nothing more than that unbothered look on his face, but his eyes, his eyes look like the raging sea that divides Espa from Adros during a typhoon. They are darker than I have ever seen them. The normal orange that fills them sometimes is gone and replaced with dark shadows. Much like the shadows he once wielded…or shadow he wields now…

Fuck.

“It was Sadar’s idea…”

I shoot my eyes back to the speaking voice, but my face is still angled down to the creek.

Standing across the creek ahead of me is Devlyn with her arms crossed. This seems to be a growing trend with her at least toward me.

Iamys, not surprisingly, is standing behind her now. Using her as a shield. Not a bad choice. He moved fast, too. Luckily for him.

Sadar stands next to Devlyn, nearly a foot taller than her. Every inch of him a deadly weapon. Precise and lethal. His dark hair braided into many strands that lay across his shoulders. His hazel colored eyes, looking at me, unapologetically. I feel my eyes roll. Of course it was his idea. Master of tricks, and integration techniques. I should pick up a rock and throw it at his smug giant head.

“We needed you awake, but…” He shifts his weight in his boots. The dark muscles in his arms twitching even under his guard leathers and metals. Nervous are we Sadar? I feel my mouth curl. No wonder they are standing on the other side of the creek. I would never hurt my friends…but the rock between my fingers may think otherwise. I did even realize I grab one. I twirl it between my fingers, and I raise my knee and using it push myself upward.

Sadar is a massive man. He stands well over six feet, maybe even close to seven. Hmm, thinking about it now… we’ll have to measure him one day. He stands more than a foot, maybe almost two feet above me. As one of the top guards and a pure blooded Varcolac, he is packed with muscles, built for speed and power. Most people, most creatures, choose not to cross him and I don’t blame them. If I make him nervous that should say something. A grin pushes against my cheeks.

“Your sedative is still active if needed.” His eyes narrow at me, and I almost think I see him trying to hold back a smirk now. “So, keep your clever ideas to yourself.” I let the rock fall from my fingers… it makes a small splash in the water. He cannot contain it anymore and a grin flashes on his face, but it is gone after a few seconds., but I will relish in the fact it was there even for a couple of moments.

A smile moves across my teeth, again. I don’t need my powers to throw rocks, but I’ll play nice…for now.

“She has two hands, plenty of daggers, rocks at her disposal, and a viper tongue that can make cuts with words alone…” Iamys says peaking past Devlyn’s shoulder. “She doesn’t need her powers to be hurtful.” I tilt my head back in forth much like a predator does before pouncing on its prey. “I’m never volunteering again.” Iamys shudders. “I hate when you have that look in your eyes, too…”

A laugh leaves my lips. “One of vengeance?” Iamys moves closer to Devlyn. A smile fully tugging at my lips.  “Iams you are so sweet to say such nice things about me…But I would advise you just sleep with one eye open.” I say.

“Iamys, she isn’t going to hurt you. She likes you too much.” Devlyn gives Iamys a small shove to his shoulder. “Who else will train will her? She is kind of scary.” Iamys stumbles from the force. “What happened to your shirt?” Devlyn says motioning towards as starts walking to me, one of the only ones brave enough to approach me, right now, or ever.

“Well, for starters it is soaking wet…” I shoot a look at Iamys, and he moves behind Sadar now and I laugh. I look to Devlyn, and I tap my head. Water is now dripping down my fingertips. “This is never quiet…or powerless, I guess.”

Mind injuries happen in real life, too. That is just great… Add that to my growing list of great things. I am acquiring many lists…which is great. Add that too.

Devlyn reaches me with almost the same look on her face that I just gave Iamys. She moves a piece of the blacken shirt and notices the burn along my ribs. Blisters now replace the once bubbles along my skin. Moving along the top of my ribs to the bottom. Her fingers graze my chilled skin underneath…shit. Her eyes flash to my face, and then back down. Searching for more injuries. “Call for Galilea.” She glances behind her, looking at Iamys. “Now.”

Iamys looks at me and makes a big circle around us, nearly falling into the creek because he was too busy watching me rather than his own feet. He crosses the creek behind us to where I assume the rest of the camp is. I hiss as he passes by. His steps increase in speed. A smile pulls at my lips. I am having too much fun. I would never hurt Iamys, but it is nice to see him think I might. My reputation perceives me.
