Ch. 47

“Obedience”

I sit on the hard floor with my knees to my chest. In and out. Thinking. Pondering over what the creature said, what I saw, all the information I have gathered over the night, days, and if I can believe any of it. What ever the fuck the Zmeu is? Or that he was possible coming for me? Why were creatures being binded? Why are people going missing? Who is they, the creature talked about? Who the blonde boy is? How much fae shifters truly are? What the fuck does fae mates means?

Nyx, I need to rest, and geesh another bath.

I finally manage to get myself upward, nearly sliding across the blood soaks floor before standing on my own two feet. I sway slightly but keep moving. I can’t even look at the rest of the room. My vison narrows on the door, the door that gets me out of here. Nyx, I need out. I will personally apologize to whoever has the unfortunate task of cleaning this room later. My feet slide again across the black stickiness of the floor. In and out. Just need to make it past the door, then out.

I reach the door and my hands slip trying to grab the handle. The door is buzzing from sensing me, but I can’t get my fingers to work. They are black…Nyx, open, please. In and out. Shakier, harder.

“Fucking shit.” I use both hands to stabilize each other and grab the handle that is practically sending sparks in my hands. I yank the door open and nearly lose my footing from the force. As quickly as I can manage, I slide out of the door and pull it closed. In and out.

I am on my face before I even realize what has happened. I groan as I push myself up on my elbows. There is a large white mass beside me now, with a head tilted. Like I was the idiot for not seeing him laying by the metal door in the first place…waiting for me. I mean he is kind of hard to miss.

First a small laugh and then more start to boil out of me with a few locked down tears I have been holding on to for awhile.

Hi Halfy.

I stand up and realize there is a black splat outline on the hallway floor now. Another laugh leaves my lips. Nyx, I’ll deal with that later. I start walking down the hallway, Halfy close on my heels, and turn toward my bedroom, straight for my bathing chambers.

I spend what feels like hours soaking, scrubbing, every part of me until all the black oozy blood is all gone. I find a simple nightgown at the bottom my armoire and slip it on. Halfy has taken up a spot, or well majority of the bed, and has deemed it to be bedtime by staring at me with those giant golden saucers of his.

A smell floods my brain. My quiet brain. Nyx.

Not yet Halfy.

I move back to the hallway and to the large bay window past the reading nook. Halfy groans or was that the bed as he moved, I am not sure. I can hear the little pitter patter of the drops hitting the window glass now. I unlatch the locks on the top of the window by standing on my tip toes. The window pops open with little ease. The smell of fresh rainfall surrounds me. I climb through the window onto the little patch of roofing space outside the window before it connects to the stone tall walls on either side. Perfect for sitting, reading, thinking, and close enough that the wards still reached if they were up.

I’m fully out of the window now. Halfy unsurprisingly decided to stay inside but chose to lay by the window. I inch myself along the clearing on my hands and knees until I reach a good spot. A spot best for laying with my face to the stars and were the rain can gentle kiss my cheeks. I lay there with my eyes closed for a while, feeling each drop run down my skin. My nightgown is fully soaked, and I don’t even care. The rain has always had some kind of power over me, to calm all my nerves, to quiet my brain without the beast room, without sedatives, to just make everything stop and be still for once. I hear the slight distance clap on thunder clouds moving in the distance. I wonder if that is truly Solomaonri and Druzin or Mother just having an argument.

My moment on peace is interrupted by…mint.

You are insuperable.

“Halfy doesn’t seem mind.”

I peek out of one eye and glare back to the window. Halfy is now sitting at the entrance of the window, and I notice him licking his chops.

“Sold out for a tasty piece of grub. Terrible guard dog you are.” Halfy huffs and thuds the ground with his massive body as he goes back to laying down by the window. “Do I dare ask how you managed to slip away, let only come here?”

“I didn’t. Iamys and Oana are mulling over some books she brought. Even brought some of the dinner none us ate. Although it was Oana’s idea. She suggested we all have a sleep over, and I didn’t object.” He says and I can hear the rain hitting the leather of his tunic.

A sleepover. Grown adults having a sleepover. I mean I never had a sleepover other than when Oana and I stayed up too late and passed out in the grand library. “Mother is going to be thrilled.”

“Iamys convinced Chalia not to tell Farrah and Sadar knows I am with Iamys. Oana, I’m pretty sure she has a spell or potions for everything, so she can go anywhere, so no one would question her.” I can feel his warmth as he sits down on the roof clearing a few feet away from me. Drop after drop hitting his leather. Thunder claps again.

“What a lovely bunch of heathens you have all become.” A sigh leaves my mouth as the rain hits my cheek with more force than before. The storm is moving closer. Solomaonri and Druzin are on a mission, unless it’s Mother, hopefully not.

“You seem to attract a type.” The earthiness of the fresh rainfall is now mixing with the scent of rich mint.

“Question for question.” I ask finally sitting up and bringing my knees to my chest. I have some many questions, some many thoughts. Maybe someone who has been around for almost 300 hundred years may have some answers.

His face is facing forward watching the lighting that now flashes across the horizon, but I can see the faint tug of his mouth. “I am owed a question if I do remember correctly, but you may have a more interesting question than I currently. Indulge me, little bat.”

“How familiar are you with creatures of the underworld?”

I see his eyebrows raise for a moment and then he says, “There are numerous creatures that resided within the underworld and many more go between the underworld and the above lands. Do you have a specific creature in mind?”

“That counts are you question.” I say matter of fact like and another tug on his lips. “And yes. I am not familiar with it though. It is like a woman or looks like a human mortal woman. Pale almost translucent skin, you can see every vein, every organ. Black blood like other undead creatures. Red dead eyes. Ringing any bells?”

Zanir doesn’t say anything at first and I can tell his mind is racing. “Where did you see one?”

I hesitate.

I feel like this is one of those moments that will decide the verdict of future events. Can I trust someone, a vampire, a mortal vampire, I only met a few days ago? Even though we are connected somehow? Shit. I mean he hasn’t done anything that would make me question that… other threat to eat me like a damn snack… but he is currently mortal…

Curiosity, and sheer will to just understand what is happening in the world around us, around me, the world I have yet to feel, to see, to venture through pushes me forward.

“Let’s just say, it is gone now…” I squeeze my knees closer to me. Dead by me…my fangs…ripping through it… I examine my fingernails, the blacken blood long gone. “But, mother captured it for questioning.”

Zanir follows suit and mirrors my own body. Crossing his legs and resting his hands on his knees close to his chest...His legs are much longer than mine… “Even with centuries under my belt, I have only seen two Orelis. Why would your Mother have one?”

“That’s your question…and I am not sure, but it was binded. I think she was hoping to get some beneficial information out of it.”

Zanir looks over at me, waiting.

“What?” I feel a warmth caressing the edge of skin…I think I almost preferred when it was cold that remained rather than whatever this is. I feel my cheeks flush slightly.

“Just waiting for you question because I know you have plenty.”

“Can you blame me for being curious?” I say with a small laugh. “Do you think binded creatures can communicate with each other?”

“It’s possible, like most things are. When magic is involved the possibilities can become limitless.” He glances at me again. “Did your…Mother get any information from the Oreli?”

“Yes, but it only lead to more questions. Binded creatures are ruled by something called a Zmeu and or they. Although I don’t know what or who either of those are.” I look out ahead of me. “Have you heard of anything of this?”

The rain continues with drops after drops. My hair is soaked and sticking to the side of my face now. My nightgown has gained about thirty pounds of water weight and is fixed to me like glue. The thunder clouds clapping growing closer and closer. Probably need to head inside soon.

“Unfortunately, no. Muma Padurii mentioned a creature within the forest that she has never seen before. Visiting multiple times within the last few months.”

I feel my face and nose wrinkle. There is just so much I don’t truly know.

“How about we switch it up.” Zanir says suddenly twisting her body to face me. Thunderclaps in the atmosphere and Zanir doesn’t even blink. “Two truths, one lie.” The rain fall drips down his chin.

I look him over. He has a small smirk on his face now and flames are dancing in his cerulean eyes. I slowly turn to face him, ours knees mere inches from each other.

“I’ll go first.”

This should be interesting.
