*In the title, wet garment also means a false accusation.

Characters in this chapter:

Sapphiras Perfectio, 2nd son of the Earl of Aldridge

Percival Belisario, 3rd son of Margrave of Vanderwall on the Eastern Frontier

Veritas Perfectio, 1st son of the Earl of Aldridge, Sapphiras’ older brother

Today, art classes with Percival-sensei are off.

He also has sword training, so I can’t have him with me every day. I was worried that he might not be feeling well because he was acting kind of strange yesterday, but if he can wield a sword, he’s probably not in particularly bad shape. He also ate well.

But Percival is not only a swordsman, he is also an all-rounder in the arts and other subjects as well. The man who is seamless in all directions is also a man who spares no effort in all directions.

I raise my left hand and look at the shiny ring on my middle finger.

“……A proof of bond, huh? Nfufu.”

A smile naturally comes to my face. I can’t wait to go on an adventure with Percival. Travelling with a trusted companion can be fun even when it’s difficult.

I walk lightly toward the backyard. I don’t feel like studying art alone, so I decided to practise spinning my wand. As for the subjects other than art, if I just skim through them before the exam, there’s no problem……probably.

In fact, I’m planning to spin the wand a bit more spectacularly. It’s still a work in progress as a technique, so I’ll have to pick a place to practise. If the wand falls out and hits someone, it’s a big problem, especially if I spin the wand in a room and break a window or something. In the backyard, people rarely come over, and no one will see the awkward part of me picking up the wand after I send it flying.

“……Nn? Something dropped.”

Something has fallen in the shady, deserted backyard. I went closer to see if it was something someone had left behind, and found it was a broken flute.

“This……must be a dragon flute.”

I looked at it without touching it just in case it was cursed, and then I heard a familiar voice behind me.

“That’s him. He must have blown the dragon flute. That dragon flute is irrefutable proof.”

“What?”

Oi, oi, what are you talking about? I stand up and turn around.

There was Veritas with a few knights in tow.

“……I’m not playing the dragon flute, though, am I?”

“Don’t lie. Then what is that thing that fell at your feet?”

“This was already there when I got here.”

“I wonder about that? Then why are you sneaking around in such a deserted place?”

On the contrary, why does Veritas know I’m here? And he’s so well prepared that he even politely brings the knights with him.

“Isn’t it up to me where I go and what I do?”

“Look at you. You can’t tell me what you’re doing. I have proof. You can’t get away with it.”

I don’t know if you’d believe me if I said I was here practising my wand spinning skills in style. Besides, a swan floating gracefully on a lake is not going to make anyone watching it realise it’s frantically paddling its way under the surface, is it?

“……Sorry, but will you come with us?”

The knight flanks me and asks me to accompany him.

“Haa, okay.”

I nod reluctantly. There’s no point in resisting here. But it’s become kind of annoying. I haven’t mastered the cool wand spinning yet, so if I don’t practise, I’ll forget how it feels, but I don’t think I’ll be able to practise wand spinning today.

Veritas proudly said with a sly face that this guy could transfer, so he could do as much behind-the-scenes work as he wanted, and that he was always sneaking around in the backyard doing something.

What is this Veritas guy, hiding and spying on me? That’s disgusting.

I was taken to a room in the academy, where I was interviewed by three knights in the presence of a teacher. Naturally, I tell them I don’t know anything about the flute that fell in the backyard.

I was in the cafeteria the day before yesterday, so if they asked the people who were there, they would know that I didn’t play the flute, right? I told them. One of the knights leaves the room after hearing what I said. I am sure they went to get confirmation.

Well, even if the people who were there testified, I don’t know if they would believe me. Proving you didn’t do it is harder than proving you did, because there is no evidence left behind. But since I didn’t do it, I’ll just have to say I didn’t do it.

I wonder if they’ll let me go by dinner, or if they’ll take me to the Knights’ detention centre, should I ask them to bring me an illustrated book?

“Rest assured, Sapphiras-san. We don’t think you played the flute.”

Said the one who seemed to be the most important of the three knights.

“……Eh, is that so?”

Speaking of which, the atmosphere among the knights is quite peaceful for an interrogation that is about to take place.

“Aah, this is just a formality to convince Veritas. After all, he’s the son of the adviser to the Order of Magicians, so we can’t afford to neglect him.”

“It’s hard to believe that Sapphiras-san, who has the backing of the Duke of Bloomfield, would do such a careless thing. Besides, I heard about you from the Second Order of Knights You helped our comrades.”

What, I didn’t realise that. You didn’t doubt me from the beginning. Even knights don’t have free time, but you’re really working hard.

The knight who had just left came back.

“There is no doubt about his claim. He was in the cafeteria before the Wyvern attack. A number of academy students testified.”

“I see. This should convince him. Sapphiras-san, I’m sorry for taking up so much of your time. You can leave now.

“I see. Well then.”

When I got up from my seat and left the room, Veritas was waiting for me. As soon as he sees my face, the edges of his mouth turned up in a wicked smile. What have I done to this ex-brother of mine? I think I’m the one who’s had something being done to.

“How is this guy going to be in the future?”

Now that I’m a stranger and not even close to him at all, it’s unbecomingly rudeness for a son of an aristocrat to call someone ‘this guy’. Above all, I don’t like the fact that he’s decided that I’m the culprit.

“He had nothing to do with the flute.”

“……Ha? It can’t be! No one but him could have played the dragon flute!”

“……Why do you think he played the dragon flute?”

It’s unnatural for him to be in such a deserted place! In fact, this had a flute!”

‘This guy1こいつ (koitsu)‘ has finally become ‘this2これ (kore)‘. Come to think of it, I was called that when I was in the Earl’s household.

But still, to try so hard to make me the culprit, I think it’s like revealing that Veritas is involved.

“No, I don’t have one. I was just looking at what had fallen.”

I retort, and Veritas glares at me. So why do you have to be so hostile? I don’t understand.

On the whole, it’s a bit weak to have that as the only basis for plotting against me. But if the knights had been on the side of the adviser, that alone would have been reason enough to hold me. It’s a good thing the Earl is so unpopular.

“There was nothing suspicious about Sapphiras-san. The academy students who were in the cafeteria that day testified for me. I didn’t find anything unnatural in their testimony.”

“Then check this guy’s room. I’m sure you’ll find other incriminating evidence.”

Oya? You seem awfully sure of yourself. Could it be that they’re trying to plant something in my room, taking advantage of the carelessness of the fourth dormitory block? But alas. Recently, I’ve come to own reasonably expensive personal belongings, so I’m also cautious. I won’t allow you to break in so easily. After all, I have a gluttonous crawler caterpillar to look after the room while I’m away. He may not look like much, but he’s a good boy who eats everything, like it or not. If there was an accomplice who was trying to misbehave in my room, he’d be running away screaming by now.

“I don’t see why I should go to the trouble of bringing in a wyvern to disrupt the academy?”

“Hmm, it seems like you’ve been very active during this time. Didn’t you want to raise your reputation with your own work?”

You wouldn’t do that, would you?

“Sapphiras!”

“Percival?”

Percival rushes over. He must have been in a hurry, still in his training clothes, and his golden hair stuck to his forehead as if he hadn’t even wiped off his sweat.

“Are you alright? I heard you were taken by a knight.”

“Yeah, I’m fine. I was suspected of blowing the dragon flute, but everyone in the cafeteria testified for me.”

“Then I’ll testify too.  There was no way he could play the dragon flute.”

“Well, everyone knows that Belisario is good friends with you. Do you think you can rely on the testimony of someone like that? Most likely, you seduced him with your face and body. If you look hard enough, you’ll find others who have been seduced by you. If you decide to leave the academy, why don’t you go that way? It would suit you.”

It was correct to direct the vulgar remarks just now to me, not to Percival. Even though he’s the third son, Percival is the son of a Margrave family. But that doesn’t change the fact that the content is rude.

“Perfectio-senpai, what the hell does that mean?”

“I mean it as it is? What else could it mean?”

Veritas snickers. The atmosphere surrounding Percival changed. When I glance at Percival’s face standing next to him, his expression is empty.

Uwah, he is pretty angry. Well, I guess so. A guy who testifies because he is thought to be confused by lust.

You can say whatever you like about me, but Percival is a man of integrity, and I will not tolerate insulting remarks about him.

We may have broken up as a family, but we are unwillingly blood brothers. I was going to keep quiet about the stealing of credit, but I changed my mind. In the first place, it’s not in my nature to keep letting my ass get kicked.

It’s difficult to prove you didn’t do it, but it’s surprisingly easy to prove you did.
