After the four gathered in the parking lot of the restaurant that they previously arranged to meet in, Cai Youyang led the introductions.

Thus, Yan Zhi introduced the man beside him. “This is my friend, Du Wan.”

Cai Youyang also introduced the one by his side. “This is my friend, Lu Feng.”

Friend?

Lu Feng squinted at Cai Youyang, suddenly emitting a cold aura.

Cai Youyang turned a blind eye to it. Propping his chin up in one hand and flashing a slight smile, he chatted with Yan Zhi about each other’s work. Meanwhile, his other hand reached under the table and secretly sent Lu Feng a WeChat message.

“Yan Zhi knows about us, but he’s afraid of making Du Wan feel awkward. Please don’t talk about our relationship first. When we get back home later, I’ll call you husband, okay? Don’t be angry.”

Lu Feng looked down at his phone, and a slight sneer appeared on his face. He coldly looked up and flashed Du Wan an exceptionally standard and polite smile. In a distant tone, he said, “Where do you work, Mr. Du?”

Du Wan noticed the hostility hidden underneath his calm composure. He deliberately shot Cai Youyang a glance and slowly said, “What a coincidence. I’m in the same profession as Mr. Cai.”

“You’re a teacher too?” Energized, Cai Youyang straightened up in great interest and asked, “Which subject do you teach?” He surmised that Mr. Du was either a music teacher—he had a good temperament—or an arts teacher.

“I teach psychology at A University,” Du Wan replied.

Cai Youyang seemed to have been pinched by the neck as the words died down from his throat.

As Lu Feng watched Cai Youyang’s expression change from surprise to worship, his gaze toward Du Wan grew colder and colder. “Really amazing, Mr. Du.” Then in an insincere manner, he said, “So you’re an intellectual, more exemplary than us common people. Let me give you a toast out of respect.”

Cai Youyang elbowed Lu Feng, trying to make him speak more normally and to not act weirdly. But unexpectedly, Lu Feng raised his arm and placed it on the back of Cai Youyang’s chair, causing Cai Youyang to bump into air and fall into Lu Feng’s arms.

Flirting at home was fine, but the unintentional PDA made Cai Youyang feel embarrassed. He leaned on his seat, face lowered and incredibly flushed. He avoided their gazes and didn’t dare speak for a while.

Du Wan didn’t notice their interaction but said, “Mr. Lu, or perhaps I should call you Captain Lu. I have actually heard about you for quite a long time now. I’ve wanted to meet you since then.”

Lu Feng leaned back on his chair, folded his arms, and shot him a stony stare. “I don’t know anyone from A University.” As he said this, his expression remained unchanged, but his muscles tightened. When Du Wan addressed him as “Captain Lu,” his brain almost immediately shifted toward the criminal profile that the Provincial Criminal Psychology Research Unit had provided for the culprit of the “216 homicide case.”

25 to 35 years of age, has attained tertiary education, well-off, possesses a certain degree of paranoia, possesses strong counter-reconnaissance abilities, and knowledgeable about the public security system to a certain degree.

At that moment, Lu Feng switched from an ordinary civilian filled with jealousy to a veteran police with a keen sense of smell. Why did a university professor from the distant Beijing come to this small city during winter vacation when it had no places worth sightseeing? And how did he manage to recognize a local police captain?

“Don’t look at me like that.” Even when subjected to Lu Feng’s gaze, Du Wan remained unusually composed and didn’t avert his gaze. “I just heard Professor Ruifang talk about you before. He admires you very much. You should know this.”

Lu Feng asked, “You mean the director of the Provincial Criminal Psychology Research Unit?”

Du Wan nodded. “He’s one of my university professors.”

Lu Feng wanted to continue asking Du Wan about his purpose for visiting this city when the waiter came to serve their food. When Yan Zhi saw the food, he hurriedly invited everyone to eat. Thus, Lu Feng’s words were interrupted.

Once again picking up the previous conversation, Du Wan shook his head and said with a faint smile, “Captain Lu, I’m not your murderer.”

Lu Feng also flashed a smile. “Just randomly asking.” He then turned his gaze toward the red wine and the beer on the table. “Does Mr. Lu drink red wine or beer?”

Du Wan made a casual gesture. When Lu Feng stood up to pour wine for everyone, he suddenly said, “In fact, I participated in the completion of that criminal profile that the provincial department gave you.”

As Lu Feng took the bottle of red wine, he slightly paused.

“So,” said Du Wan in an almost imperceptible mocking tone if one didn’t listen carefully. “You don’t need to be wary of me. In a sense, I should be your teammate, right?”

Unperturbed, Lu Feng finished pouring the wine. He then sat down, raised his glass, and said with a faint smile, “Expert Du, this is just an occupational habit of mine. Please forgive me.”

“It’s alright.” Du Wan didn’t clarify Lu Feng’s misunderstanding until afterward, waiting to see Lu Feng embarrass himself first. He gently clinked glasses with Lu Feng and magnanimously said, “Just take note next time.” His smile widened, and the gold rim of his glasses reflected a sharp, dazzling light.

After taking a few bites, Lu Feng mentioned that he still had matters to attend to at the bureau and left in advance. Cai Youyang muttered to himself, didn’t he say his lunch break lasted more than an hour? How long had it only been?

Unbeknownst to him, after Lu Feng returned to the bureau, he called back all the people who were still on their lunch break.

The case hadn’t been solved yet. Rest? Didn’t exist.

What he didn’t say was: We front-line policemen of the crime investigation unit couldn’t let ourselves be underestimated by a university professor.

After the meal, Du Wan drove Cai Youyang and Yan Zhi home. After Cai Youyang got off the car, Yan Zhi asked Du Wan why he seemed to be targeting Lu Feng earlier. “You aren’t such a competitive person,” he said, bewildered.

Du Wan had a smile on his face. “Did I act differently than usual today? This is just your misconception.”

Yan Zhi scratched the back of his head and hesitantly said, “That’s possible.”

Du Wan’s smile remained plastered on his face, but deep inside, he remembered his professor Tan Ruifang’s evaluation of Lu Feng: bold yet scrupulous, a little inexperienced but with time, has a bright future ahead of him.

A bright future?

Merely some police captain of the crime investigation unit.

Professor Tan might be getting in on the years, Du Wan indifferently thought. He could no longer view things in an objective manner. When he recalled Lu Feng’s hurried departure, he cheered up again, thinking that he must have caused Lu Feng to blow his lid. But for Professor Tan’s sake, he would no longer continue quarreling with Captain Lu.

It was at this moment that Yan Zhi suddenly said, “Hey, Du Wan. Don’t say that Lu Feng isn’t worthy of being a policeman in the crime unit. He has a tall and straight figure, with a broad back and a narrow waist. And most importantly, he has a handsome face. When he stands still… Oho, he looks striking from head to toe, from the face down to the body, more eye-catching than a model.”

Du Wan’s face stiffened. He broke into a reluctant smile. “You used the wrong adjective.”

Yan Zhi waved a hand. “In short, handsome.”

Du Wan: “…” He clenched the steering wheel and kept his darkened eyes trained on the road.

Lu Feng, the future is long.

You f*cking wait for me! I’ll make you handsome! Make you handsome!

It was useless even if Professor Tan were to persuade him in person this time. Professor Du Wan was now completely at odds with Captain Lu.
