Chapter 3, HOTD

.

.

.

[We have our weapon. Leave the group and go search for Rei, Takashi and Hisashi.]

Haven: Erin, are you mad? Why should I leave the group?

[Because you need to accomplish the hidden side mission. Saving Hisashi will allow you get a good amount of rewards in points and ranked rewards.]

Haven: I get that... but I think it would be best if I also stuck to this group. It'll be easier for us to fend off attacks. In addition to that, remember that the plot is slightly altered. We don't know how strong the Runner Zombies and the Evolved ones are.

[Haven. Sigh. Look, I understand your concerns... I really do. I'm apart of you. I know you better than any other person in the entire world. I have access to your memories and even your every feeling.]

Haven: What does that have to do w-

[Look. Just trust me on this, okay? I know what I'm saying is unreasonable but you and I are going to become very powerful through this.]

Haven: Erin... I really hope you know what you're doing. You're the only one that gets to reincarnate with memories. I don't get that.

[I won't let us die, my friend. I don't like dying as well you know. When I reincarnate, my soul has to pass through void energies. That REALLY hurts. Besides, you are the perfect host that I've found. I'm not willing to squander this opportunity for someone who'll believe that he's insane.]

Haven: Huh... you never told me it hurt.

[I can't be giving away all my secrets now, can I? Please, get to it.]

Haven: Alright. Ill do it.

[Good.]

.

.

.

Haven looked toward his group. He didn't know what to say. Yukio had given Jax and him a weapon so they would stick together to survive the coming mission. It felt somewhat wrong to just spit on his generosity. But he had to it.

All in the quest to get stronger.

.

.

.

Haven: Guys... Im-

Yukio: Im leaving. You guys are on your own.

Jax: What?! Why?

Izumi: You...

Yukio: Remember, this mission is a test. You survive it, you get on board my team. I've already handed you a freebie. Good luck. You're going to need it.

Izumi: But... I-

Yukio: Shut up. Don't think too much.

Jax: If zombies are going to be the main plot line, we'll have a better chance of survival with you. I doubt we'll be able to survive against many of those Running Zombies or even the Evolved ones.

Yukio: I don't care. Like I said, this mission is a test. You either sink or swim. This is not a game. I want reliable comrades who I can trust to watch my back and you all dying will just prove to me that you're useless.

.

.

.

He smiled. He patted our shoulders and began to walk off.

.

.

.

Haven: Will we meet up with you again?

Yukio: Heh. That'll depend on you.

.

.

.

With those final words, he parted ways with, disappearing into the student packed hallways where the students were going into their next classes.

.

.

.

Jax: This is quite troublesome. He is definitely the strongest person here. Most likely the only one to be able to fight off the Evolved zombies.

Izumi: True... we should go. Maybe look for safe spot?

Jax: Might be a good idea but it has to have multiple exits in case we get surrounded. Haven, what do you think?

Haven: Sigh. I think... Im leaving.

Jax: What? What do you mean?

Haven: Im leaving. Like Yukio said, were gonna have to prove ourselves to make sure we become strong. Im... not really a team player. Im a loner.

Izumi: Are you serious right now? That's a completely stupid thing to do!

Haven: I know, yet I'll still do it. Im sorry but you guys are on your own.

Jax: Haven... what's the matter with you? We are in a strange situation with strange variables present. If we aren't careful, we will all perish. When Yukio gave us these swords, he did so so that we would all protect each other and move in a group to ensure survival. Izumi is right, what you're doing is downright the dumbest thing to do.

Haven: You think I don't know that? I do. That's why im doing this.

Izumi: That makes absolutely no sense, are you mental or something?

Haven: I've said enough. Im leaving.

Izumi: Wait! You can't ju-

.

.

.

Jax pulled her back, to his side. He narrowed his eyes towards Haven. We might have lost all forms of camaraderie with him. Izumi seems more like a follower than a leader so she'll most definitely follow what Jax says.

.

.

.

Jax: Leave him be. He chose his path.

.

.

.

With those final words, we moved out of the classroom. I felt bad for leaving them like that but it would be worth it in the end. They needed this opportunity to become stronger. And Haven needed no distractions in our plan to make him stronger.

Our mentality needed to slowly change.

And our first order of business was breaking through limits.

All three of them.

Before long, we had already made our way through the bumbling students running around. Screams started resounding around us as Haven ran his way towards the crosswalks and saw them, Rei, Takashi and Hisashi.

Rei's weapon was stuck into the zombie's chest, it was trying its best to get to her even with the weapon halting its movement. Hisashi, seing this, went behind the zombie and put it into a choke hold to halt it's movements.

.

.

.

Hisashi: Rei! Pull it out now!

Takashi: Hisashi, get away from him!

Hisashi: Don't worry, I can take him.

Haven: Idiot. Are you planning on becoming a zombie?

Takashi: H-huh? Who're you?

.

.

.

Without bothering to reply, Haven ran towards Hisashi. He readied his sword and thrusted it's tip into the zombie's eye. Blood splattered everywhere, as the tip exited through the other side of its head, successfully piercing its brain.

The zombie, having its brain destroyed, fell in a heap onto the ground. When the deed was done, Haven removed the sword from its head and kicked its body to the side. He swung his weapon to rid it of the blood.

.

.

.

Haven: We should go. More of em are bound to come up here soon.

Takashi: Wait! Who are you?

Haven: Im Haven Crest. Who are you guys?

Hisashi: Ah, thanks for the help. Im Hisashi Igou and this is Rei Miyamoto and Takashi Komuro.

Haven: No problem and i guess its nice to meet you but... you should be more careful, these guys are zombies. If I hadn't helped you there, the bastard probably would have bit you then you'd have turned into one of them as well.

Rei: These guys really are zombies? My god.

Takashi: Oh man. That's... how did this happen? Some virus or pollution or what? From your clothes, you aren't a student of this school are you?

Haven: No im not a student. I climbed over the wall when I heard the screams. Truth is, the stuff here is happening on the outside as well. A lot of people are dying out there.

Hisashi: Are you serious? Damn. The authorities probably aren't likely going to be of much help, are they?

.

.

.

Haven nodded.

.

.

.

Haven: Come on, we should get out of here.

Takashi/ Rei/ Hisashi: Right!

.

.

.

The four of us explored the area a bit more, we came across a few more zombies as we made our way toward the main building. Haven made short work of the zombies, killing them off easily. Rei and Hisashi tried helping here and there but Takashi and Haven seemed capable enough to handle it.

On the way, they witnessed many scenes of people screaming out for help. Haven stopped the others from helping when a group of students were being pushed back by some zombies. The only reason they weren't dead yet was because one of them was using an entire desk as a shield to stop the undead.

.

.

Rei: We should help them! Let me go!

Hisashi: Stop, Rei!

Haven: Hisashi is right, Rei. Look, we cant save them anymore.

Rei: What? Why!

Takashi: Those marks on their arms. Look. They've been infected already.

Rei: No...

Hisashi: Please Rei. We need to leave.

.

.

.

With some persuasion from us, Rei listened and allowed us to lead her away from the students. Along the way, we noticed that there were quite a few more zombies than earlier. Their numbers were multiplying faster than I realized.

And before I knew it, we heard a familiar scream. Or at least, it was familiar to me. That should have been Saya Takagi. Kohta Hirano was out of bullets from his nail gun and a zombie snuck up behind Saya. She would then use a drill to kill the zombie.

.

.

.

Saya: No! Stay away from me!!

Haven: Shit, come on!

.

.

.

By the time Haven arrived, he ran into Saeko Busujima and the busty nurse, Shizuka Marikawa. They turned to see Saya Takagi plunging her drill into the zombie's head. Her expression was a mix of horror and panic.

A moment later, Takashi and his cabal caught up to me. Haven sighed in relief. It seemed she would be fine after all. Stuff didn't happen like Side B.

That was fine.

A few groans came from the hallway. Looking around, we noticed a few zombies lumbering towards Saya, likely attracted to her screams. Good thing we made it in time.

Saeko glanced at my weapon with a raise eyebrow but opted not to say anything about it. She pointed at the zombies and spoke.

.

.

.

Saeko: Ill take the ones on the left. Get the right.

Haven: Sure.

.

.

.

Haven dashed in, kicking away an undead near Saya before using his sword to slice through its neck. Borrowing the momentum from the strike, he jumped towards the next and pulled its arm that was reaching towards him. Haven then turned around tossing the undead into its ugly friends, successfully tripping all of them, sending them to the ground.

Haven glanced to his left and noticed Saeko's skill with the bokken. She twisted the handle of the wooden sword and smacked it hard against the skulls of the zombies, killing them in a single hit. Haven turned back to his opponents and stabbed through each of their skulls just as they were trying to get up.

.

.

-Side Quest Reward 1, Kill Zombies - 1 point acquired.

.

.

We all glanced at each other then relaxed our muscles. Saeko introduced herself and the nurse to me and I told her that I wasn't from the school, explaining that when I saw what was happening inside, I climbed over the wall to look for survivors.

Takashi explained how I arrived just in time to save Hisashi from getting bitten. As the other engaged in their respective conversations, Haven lent up against a pillar. Taking my chance during the quiet time, I initiated a conversation with him.

.

.

.

[Heh. This is pretty cool huh?]

Haven: Hm? What do you mean?

[Who would you choose, out of any one of them?]

Haven: ...not sure to be honest. Every single one of them have sexy bodies. The Nurse has to have the biggest tits I have ever seen in my life! Look at them! They're even perky! Like seriously? How is that even possible?

[Haha. This is an anime. Logic doesn't exactly apply here.]

Haven: True... but im still not sure who to pick. I have a sexy nurse, a sexy swordsman, a sexy... staff master? What's Rei's role in this again?)

[Eye candy.]

Haven: Hm... anyways, what was I saying? Oh yeah, and a sexy nerd. No, I wasn't talking about Kohta.

[Oh I know what you mean but I honestly doubt you'll be getting any of them.]

Haven: Way to ruin my self esteem, Erin. Anyways, enough about that, what's our next plan of action?

[The bus. We'll need to escape from the school. Propose the plan.]

.

.

.

Haven nodded at my advice. He proceeded to tell the others of what he thought would be a good idea to accomplish at the moment. They agreed for the most part but Saya wanted to know the full scope of the situation.

In the end, they decided to head towards the teacher's lounge. It was the closest location from the area, being an isle down from the trophy cases.

When we entered the room, Takashi closed the door and Hisashi went to shut the blinds in the room in case the zombies noticed movement in the room.

A moment later, Saeko switched on the remote for the T.V.

.

.

.

Newscaster A: We currently don't truly understand the situation. There are various reports that the dead are... rising and attacking people. Government officials have evacuated their premises to take shelter on an aircraft carrier to plan out a counterattack and explain what's been happening. Reports of looting and murder have come in. It seems that criminals have come out in the open while the public is focused on-

.

.

.

Saya thumbed through various news channels

.

.

.

Newscaster B: Do Not let them bite you. Their infection will spread into you and you will turn into one of them in mere minutes. Reports indicate it's some sort of virus that is transferred through blood and-

.

.

.

The news screen emitted static sounds and blanked out. We wouldn't be getting information from there anymore.

.

.

.

Takagi: Damn! They themselves don't know whats going on. The authorities are useless in this situation.

Saya: Its like the Spanish flu which infected millions and killed much more.

Kohta: What caused it to stop?

Saya: Too many humans died, the flu couldn't spread anymore due to the lack of bodies.

.

.

.

Kohta walked over to window where Haven was standing and pushed down the blinds slightly. His expression serious.

.

.

.

Kohta: Except instead of them dying... the dead rise up and try to spread the disease.

Shizuka: That's not all. Medical science doesn't seem to correctly apply to them. Bodies should decompose in the heat but with this unknown virus running rampant I fear that their bodies wont even decompose at all.

Saya: How long till they turn into skeletons then?

Shizuka: Hm... considering the various weather conditions... around a few months? That's not too long!

Saya: You are as dumb as you look.

Haven: We aren't here to start fights Saya. We can't afford to wait that long in here with the amount of zombies around the school. We need a safer base of operations. One where we can find food and shelter.

Hisashi: True. We are going to have to think of a plan and need a place to stay while this blows over. The school isn't a safe place. Im all for Haven's plan right now. It's the best one yet.

Saeko: Agreed. We'll need transport and supplies if were going to get out of this alive. I also want to confirm that my family is alright.

.

.

.

We ventured out into the hallways where some zombies were milling around, Takashi and I led the force of survivors where we'd clear out the way. Saeko acted as clean up for when any got past us. Kohta was ranged support, attacking the ones furthest from us to thin out the horde.

Soon we came across a group of survivors. An unspoken agreement flashed through our minds and at that moment, we decided to save them.

Haven charged in with a slice from his sword, decapitating the zombie closest to us. Using the momentum, he kicked out towards a zombie, pushing it down and using the opportunity to plunge the sword into its brain.

Saeko came up behind us and slammed her bokken into the heads of the zombies, effectively ending their unlives.

Looking around, Haven noticed that the corpses were fewer in number than what we expected.

.

.

.

Haven: Erin, why are there so few of them? I could have sworn that there would have been more here.

[Listen, do you hear that?]

Haven: Hear, what...? Are those....?

.

.

.

He strained our ears. Odd... why is it when we share the same body, I seem to have higher senses than he does? Something that I'll never understand. Soon he heard very, very faint sounds amongst the moaning of the zombies and the shuffling of their feet.

.

.

.

Haven: Those are... gunshots. Did the police arrive or something?

[No. Remember, the nearest police station is quite a ways away from here. Think Haven, besides the police, who would be the most likely candidate to posses a ranged weapon.]

Haven: ...Yukio... he's killing them. The undead.

[Indeed. He's farming up points for the next mission. I wonder how much he's amassed by now.]

Haven: Probably up in the hundreds by now.

.

.

.

In any case, It was better for us in the long run. The more he killed, the less would attack us and hinder us. Farming points using regular zombies was basically a waste of time for us right now. Which is why I need make sure that Haven encounters Runners and Evolved as soon as possible.

If my plan comes to fruition, Haven will be the first person to accomplish the most amazingly unexpected thing in all of the history of God's Dimension.

.

.

.

[Enough of that, check to see if they are infected.] I told Haven.

Haven: (Will do). Hey, was anyone bitten?

Girl A: No, none of us got bitten.

Takashi: Were gonna get out here. Anyone coming?

Girl A: Sure, we'll be happy to leave.

.

.

.

With this, our group grew bigger by an additional 4. Making us a group of 11 people. Hurrying down, we made it to the stairs. Unfortunately our way was blocked by the zombies. There was quite the number of them and we weren't confident enough to attempt to pass through without getting swarmed. Now that our group was of a bigger number, we had more members to worry about. Especially considering that 3 of them didn't seem to be able to put up much of a fight.

.

.

.

Saya: It's fine. They only react to noise. They're blind. We'll be fine if we just be quiet.

Takashi: Are you willing to test that theory?

Saya: W-well... we, Kohta and I that is, saw that the zombies don't even seem to react even when we threw some gloves at them. It didn't even see the locker in front it. It just sort of bumped into it over and over again.

Saeko: The point still stands. Are you willing to go down there and test the theory?

Saya: Hmph!

Takashi: Sigh... I'll-

Haven: Ill go. Stay here. If anything happens, pick up my sword and race towards the bus.

Takashi: Wait, I think that I should-

Hisashi: No, Takashi. I wont let you go into danger like that.

Saeko: Actually, I think that I should-

Haven: Urgh, shut up. Now your making me hesitate. Relax. I've got it. Just stay here and wait for me to clear the way. If her theory's right, we'll all be fine.

Rei: But...

Saeko: I understand. That's enough, he chose his path. Let him be.

.

.

.

With those words, we went off down the stairs, as carefully as possible to avoid making any unnecessary noise that would attract the zombies. Fortunately we have knowledge of the plot. We wouldn't really be putting ourselves into danger as long as we're quiet.

Haven was still as he could be, watching the zombies lumber pass him aimlessly. One zombie in particular wandered a little too close fro comfort but it passed by without even bumping into Haven so it was all fine.

He glanced at the ground to see if there were any objects that could be used as a distraction. Sure enough, he found a shoe. Picking it up, he threw it towards a shoe locker over on the far side.

It smacked against the metal with a loud thud, attracting the attention of the zombies. Groaning and moaning, they lumbered off towards the shoe, believing it was prey. Haven took the chance to motion the others towards the exit.

.

.

.

Haven: Alright. It seems we'll have smooth sailing after this part.

[Sigh. You're an idiot.]

Haven: What? Hey! Why?

[You just jinxed us.]

Haven: How could I have possibly jin-

.

.

.

CLANG!

A loud noise reverberated throughout the hall. The echoes seemed to have pass through even the walls of the school, attracting the attention of the zombies towards us.

One of the students we saved seemed to have accidentally knocked his weapon into the stairway beam just as he was descending.

.

.

.

[Believe me now?]

Haven: Shit.

Hisashi: Run!
