Many, many years ago,

A young 12-year-old Renaud was sitting on a wheelchair. His limbs were all covered in bandages, and he was surrounded by his uncle and the latter's family while his aunt fussed over him.

"Your Highness, stop moving…" said the queen as she tried to use her water healing power to heal Renaud's bleeding arm. "Your father is on the way back…"

"I'm fine, Your Majesty…" Renaud winced when the queen moved to the cut on his face.

The queen frowned and knocked him lightly on the head. "I have told you a million times. You can call me Aunt when there's no outsider."

"It's not proper, Your Majesty," said Young Renaud before wincing again. "And I'm already a big boy now, almost a man."

"Almost?" King Adam laughed as he carried his 10-year-old daughter over. Placing Cecile next to Renaud's wheelchair, he then said, "You saved your cousin from the assassins. In my eyes, you are already a man."

Young Renaud blushed. He then reached over to pat Cecile's head and asked worriedly, "Are you still scared, Your Highness?"

Cecile shook her head. She then looked at her feet guiltily. "I'm sorry…"

Tears then welled in her eyes. She was the one who dragged him out of the palace, bringing them away from their safe environment and into the danger, and she was the one the assassins were targeting. Yet for someone who had been trained to take over the kingdom, she froze when those assassins cornered them. If not for Renaud, she would be dead.

But Renaud, in order to fight off those assassins, had activated his power to the maximum, badly injuring himself when his power went out of control. While he was already way beyond his peers in terms of his control and strength, Renaud still had much to learn, especially since he was gifted with power that was stronger than he could control.

After he killed those assassins, the water blades he sent out went rogue, as if they had a mind of their own, and the blades went for Cecile instead. Luckily, Renaud covered Cecile with his body, which resulted in his state now.

"It's alright…" Renaud wiped Cecile's tears away with his shaking hands. "I'm your personal guard and your older brother. It's my duty to protect you."

"No," King Adam said with a stern expression suddenly. "This time, Cecile has to learn her mistakes."

Hearing the disappointed tone in her father's tone, Cecile cowered slightly, but she still nodded.

"Your Majesty, please don't punish the princess," Young Renaud pleaded. "I should have stopped her. She's still young."

"She's the future monarch, and she should have known that as my heir, she will always be a target for assassins," the king said without mincing his words. "Cecile, apologize to your cousin again."

Cecile nodded. She then looked at Renaud, grabbed the side of the wheelchair, and said with sobs, "I'm sorry, Renaud. I will behave myself from now on…"

Renaud smiled weakly and patted her hands. "I forgive you. I'll always forgive you, Your Highness…"

The king nodded approvingly, happy that his nephew genuinely cared for his daughter. He then signaled his men. When two of his trusted guards arrived with a few weapons, the king then said, "As for your deed, Renaud…"

Young Renaud looked at the weapons. "This…"

The queen frowned when she saw the weapons. "Really, now? You should wait for Frederic to return first."

"I don't want Frederic to influence Renaud's choice," King Adam said as he smiled at his wife. He then said to Renaud, "Renaud, for your bravery, I have decided to knight you."

"What?" Renaud's eyes went wide open. While knights were ranked lower than princes, a prince that was knighted would rank higher than most heirs, which meant that he would even be ranked higher than his own father, staying below the first heir in line. "This is not necessary, Your Majesty!"

"Of course it is necessary…" King Adam said. He then added, "And as a knight, you need a good weapon. After all, you will one day be guarding my precious heirs. On the day itself, I will present it to you. But for now, let's see which weapon will suit you best."

The king then signaled his men to lower the weapons so that Renaud could see them clearly. There were 8 different types of weapons with different functions and different sizes.

"Which should I choose?" Young Renaud looked at the king.

"It's up to you, Renaud," the king said, placing a hand on the boy's shoulder. "A weapon works best if it's compatible with its owner. You have to choose yourself."

"The boy's arms are badly injured, and you're asking him to choose now…" the queen said while shaking her head.

"Ah, he's fine! Your water healing power is the best in Terre D'eau, I'm sure Renaud is no longer in pain."

Renaud nodded earnestly in agreement.

"But that doesn't mean the wounds have completely healed," the queen said. She then looked at Renaud and added, "Take your time. If it's too painful to move around, just tell me, and I will tell the king to leave you alone."

Renaud smiled and nodded. He then looked at the weapons, occasionally picking one up to test it.

The king watched carefully. Renaud had been taught by his father, so he should know which weapon was the best. But this was also a test. King Adam had always been wary of his brother, and he could not tell whether or not the incident today had something to do with his brother. That was one of the reasons why he always encouraged Renaud to stay next to Cecile.

On one hand, he could let Renaud develop the protective feelings that a brother would have for his younger sister. On the other hand, King Adam hoped that his brother would think twice before doing something stupid, especially since Renaud took his job as Cecile's guard and brother seriously, testing out her food personally and going everywhere with her.

King Adam wanted to see if Renaud would go for the most powerful weapon. If it were his brother, Frederic, King Adam knew that the man would definitely go for the highest ranking weapon, even if it was unsuitable for him.

Among the weapons that he laid out today, there were a few A-rank ones.

Yet, to his surprise, Renaud picked up the weapon that was bigger than him. He even nearly dropped the weapon as it was too heavy for him. The king quickly helped him.

"A guandao?" the king thought. In the history of the royal family of Terre D'eau, there had only been one guandao user, a crown prince as well as the previous owner of the weapon in Renaud's hands.

That crown prince had died young before he could even name his weapon.

It was the weakest weapon, and one most unsuitable for Renaud at this point of time.

However, Young Renaud seemed to have take a keen to it. He placed the weapon on his t.h.i.g.hs and gently ran his hands through it. "What is this?"

"It's a guandao," the king said as he nodded slowly. "Out of the weapons here, this doesn't have a name yet."

"I like this one…" Young Renaud said. "It's…"

"It's a bit too big for you, Renaud," said the queen.

Renaud nodded. He then smiled and looked up at her as he said, "Then I have no choice but to grow big enough to handle it!"

Upon hearing it, the king burst out in laughter. "Smart yet simple-minded. Alright, Renaud. You can have that."

Renaud smiled brightly and looked at his cousin. "What do you think I should name it?"
