Fu Wang carried Shu Yu while flying out of Dayan City and arrived at the rolling hills outside the city. As they landed on an open space on the ground, many others continuously landed here as well, and if you added the people that were originally there, the amount of people wasn’t small. There was laughter and chattering all around, making it seem much livelier than the streets during daytime.

It seemed like although most demons in the Snake Clan were slightly frigid, there were still some demons who loved to crowd together and get rowdy~

Although they were all demons, their appearances didn’t look any different from a human’s; most looked like young people, and those that looked like elderly or children were especially few. Moreover, the demons here were mostly low-rank demons with very few mid-rank demons, and less said about high-rank demons.

Just as Fu Wang said, this night market was a kind of place that those high-status demons wouldn’t like going to. Since Shu Yu was concealing her presence, no one else noticed that she was actually a high-rank demon. She looked left and right while grasping Fu Wang’s sleeve and whispered to him, “So this is the night market?”

Fu Wang shook his head. “The night market isn’t open yet, but it will, soon.” Just as he said this, there was a popping sound, and then countless lanterns started to continuously rise in the distant hills. Then, there was another round of popping firecrackers — nine, in total.

After hearing it, Fu Wang said, “There were nine firecrackers. So, tonight’s market will be an especially large event, there will probably be even more interesting things.”

The crowd began to move. Fu Wang raised his hand – wanting to hold Shu Yu’s hand – and bumped against her own, which had also reached out for him. The two looked at each other with smiles in their eyes, their hands linking together tightly, and they followed the crowd forward.

They walked from the clearing and reached a mountainous forest. The forest at night should’ve been dark, but there were many orange and blue fireballs hanging from the trees on both sides of their path, blooming like flowers on the branches, illuminating the night of the forest brightly.

Shu Yu held Fu Wang’s hand and dragged him towards one of the fireballs that looked like they were growing from the tree branches. She watched them without blinking, seeing them seemingly flicker and sway without any kind of breeze.

Suddenly, she saw a big orange fireball suddenly start trembling, then surprisingly, it made a noise that sounded like a human cough. That fireball suddenly opened a hole – similar to a mouth – and then, along with the coughing sounds, it spewed out a few sparks of embers. After two embers were coughed out, they – with a sputtering noise – turned into smaller fireballs that floated for a bit before sticking to the tree branches.

There were more of smaller fireballs hanging around the bigger fireball in a circle. Hearing the bigger fireball continue coughing, they stopped pretending to be flowers and dragged themselves towards the tree branch where the bigger fireball was, jumping and hopping as they plastered themselves over the bigger fireball.

Shu Yu thought it was entertaining. She thought it could’ve been a big family — a big mommy fireball, and her crowd of little fireball babies.

On another branch, Shu Yu also saw two fireballs that looked like they were arguing, one was orange and the other blue. With a loud cry, the blue fireball opened its ‘mouth’ and spit a blue-colored flare towards the orange fireball, and, in the blink of an eye, the orange fireball became blue amidst the blazing light of the blue flare.

The fireball that was already a blue made sounds like mocking laughter, and the orange fireball that had been turned blue looked like it was exploding, the flames that made up its body suddenly started exploding with a few cracking sounds. After throwing a fit for a while, it suddenly blew apart. It spooked Shu Yu and she held Fu Wang’s hand tightly.

Fu Wang was smiling as he said, “It’s fine. Look.”

The fireball that had blown up reformed and regained its original orange coloring. This time, the orange fireball also spewed a flare in the blue fireball’s direction, turning that blue fireball into orange. It was the originally blue fireball’s turn to get pissed, as it let out angry fuming noises, and then it also blew itself up.

Those two different-colored fireballs then started spitting and spewing at each other, turning each color’s different, sometimes blowing themselves up, not seeming to get bored of doing it. Even as they walked far away, Shu Yu could still see those two fireballs messing with each other from afar.

There were many other fireballs, like the row of little ones on a branch above their heads. One little fireball opened its mouth and swallowed another little fireball, and then like a chicken pecking rice, it proceeded to swallow the entire row of little fireballs. The fireball that ate the most bloated massively, and in the end, it trembled and exploded apart, turning into a row of little fireballs again. They all let out little noises that sounded like laughter.

There was another orange fireball that left its tree branch and floated down before Shu Yu. Shu Yu held her breath and looked at the mesmerizing little fireball, wondering what it was doing, then she saw it suddenly turn bigger and blow up with a boom, scaring her with a jump. After scaring her it turned small again, and like a brat who had pranked someone successfully, it grew two little lights and puffed itself – like arms sticking on its metaphorical hips – and opened its mouth to laugh loudly.

It was promptly flicked away by Fu Wang and smacked into a nearby tree. It swayed after crashing on the tree, looking displeased as it jabbered unintelligibly at them, probably accusing Fu Wang of hitting it too hard.

Shu Yu had no idea what it was saying, but she thought it was very interesting. She squeezed Fu Wang’s arm and buried her face in his arm, hiding her small giggle.

Shu Yu’s little head turned this way and that way without stopping. She felt like the forest path with the little fireballs ended too soon.

Fu Wang explained for her: “Those are also spirit creatures, they’re like the stone frogs at the inn. To be honest, these little things don’t have a predetermined form and their habits are also vastly different, but they will be naturally borne from various kinds of places. Most of them will appear in places with a lot of low-rank demons. Those stone frogs were borne from within ‘indoor lodgings’, and these little flames are borne from the ‘lights in the night’. You will see many others when we get to the night market in a bit.”

Shu Yu’s head was still craning around and watching those little fireballs. When she couldn’t see them anymore, she turned back and couldn’t help waah’ing. They had arrived at a lake. They hadn’t yet gotten to the real night market, instead, it was on the other side of the lake. Shu Yu remembered seeing this lake when they were in the air earlier, but the lake back then wasn’t this bright, and there wasn’t a long bridge over it either.

The bridge’s body looked ancient, it didn’t look like it was built recently, and instead it looked like it had already been there for many years. And this bridge which was connected to the other side wasn’t constructed above the lake, its body was instead submerged within the waters, only the two railings painted in dark red were exposed above the water.

Can you even step on it? Wouldn’t we just step in the water if we walked on it?

As Shu Yu thought this, she saw the people in the front already walk up the bridge, but contrary to what she thought, their feet didn’t sink into the water and instead they walked directly on the water’s surface. Saying they were walking on the water’s surface wasn’t quite right though, because Shu Yu took a closer look and realized that lake seemed to be stagnant and unmoving, like a mirror. When people walked on the water it was like they were walking on a mirror, there wasn’t a single ripple whatsoever.

“When the full moon is upon us and the night market opens, the lake will turn into this and connect to the night market,” Fu Wang said. It was their turn to enter the bridge. Shu Yu was very excited and wanted to step on it, but Fu Wang pulled her back. He turned to a young girl holding a flower basket on the right side of the bridge, “Two.”

The young girl received the stone currency from Fu Wang with a cheery smile, then she took out two beautiful red flowers from her basket and handed them to Fu Wang. With a smile, she said, “Enjoy your night safely, you two.” Then, she went to attend the demons behind them.

The two red flowers Fu Wang was handed quickly turned into two red lanterns. He handed one to Shu Yu. “This is the authorization needed for entering the night market.”

Shu Yu inspected the red lantern in her hands. She recalled the inn they were staying at also had fruits that people picked that turned into lanterns, and concluded that a lot of things here could turn into lanterns.

“Not exactly. This is something the night market’s Master conjured with their spiritual energy; it can protect the demons who enter the night market. In the inn, those lanterns serve the same purpose.” Fu Wang said.

Shu Yu: So, they’re entry tickets. Wait a minute, I didn’t say anything, why does Fu Wang know what I’m thinking?

Fu Wang: “Because Xiao-Yu is very easy to understand.”

Shu Yu: … I don’t believe that. Then try to guess what I’m thinking now.

Fu Wang: “I will not.” (Smiling)

Shu Yu: I didn’t even say anything!

Fu Wang: “As I said, Xiao-Yu is very easy to understand.” (Sighing)

Shu Yu quietly turned away, not wanting to look at Fu Wang.

This man was too scary, he only had to look at her eyes to know what she was thinking.

Fu Wang stared at her side profile. If it wasn’t because he had no free hand right now, he really wanted to pat her head. Thus, Shu Yu felt Fu Wang holding her hand more tightly; the two held hands while their free hands held a red lantern, and they mixed in with the crowd of people holding red lanterns, becoming part of the band of red lights that stretched over the lake.

The bustling of the night market on the other side of the lake could already be heard faintly. The brilliant lights reflected off the surface of the lake. Shu Yu was led by Fu Wang into a dazzling and gorgeous world.

After entering the night market, their red lanterns turned back into red flowers, and Fu Wang pinned his red flower on Shu Yu’s hair. Seeing this, Shu Yu looked at her flower, and then looked back at Fu Wang, and moved to pin it on his hair. Fu Wang didn’t dodge and even bent down slightly to make it easier for her. The big red flower didn’t look out of place on his head, it even added to his gorgeousness, making his overall person seem livelier. Shu Yu’s heart was beating; she suddenly wanted to see him wearing red clothes.

“Let’s go, didn’t you want to look around?” Fu Wang was extremely at ease. Seeing her dazed, he pulled her hand and walked forward.

One lantern after another was hung, with a hundred lanterns making up a lantern board. Many of these lantern boards stretched very far off to both sides of the road, until you couldn’t see where it ended. At the very top of the multitude of boards was a crane carved out of wood, adorned with a crimson ribbon that hung a dozen or so meters over their heads, giving off a very lively and festive look.

Shu Yu noticed the white lanterns on those boards sometimes had a shadow flickering by. Looking closely, those were white cranes with their wings spread out. One moment they were next to a lantern there, and the next moment they were over the lantern in the front.

“That’s a spirit creature as well, borne from the ‘shade of a lantern’, they are the shadows within a source of light. The stall over there sells a kind of lantern that these lantern shades usually parasitize.” Fu Wang pointed at nearby stall selling lamps underneath a light board.

Shu Yu walked over to look, greatly interested. She saw dozens of lanterns with different kinds of beauties painted on them. The lantern closest to her had a man drawn with slightly open clothing and loose hair sleeping underneath a flower tree, he was painted the size of a palm on the lantern. Shu Yu only looked at it for a little bit, when the man painted suddenly raised his head and looked at her, and teasingly said, “Beautiful, do you like me? If you are to purchase me, I am willing converse and entertain Beautiful every day and help you get rid of your loneliness at night~”

Shu Yu stepped back, a little overwhelmed by the palm-sized beauty’s flirtatious gaze. Fu Wang stepped forward and, smiling, told the lamp merchant, “Please give me this lamp.” He pointed at the lamp with the beautiful man.

“Of course, have a good evening, dear customers~” The merchant sold the lantern, smiling widely. With a smiley face, he watched his customer lead his female partner away, and, right before her very eyes, proceeded to throw that lantern into a body of water. The merchant cheerfully tapped the fan on his hand, “Oya, what an easily jealous customer.”

Within the row of lanterns in front of him, the little men and women painted on it all looked over, then they tsk’ed and chimed in: “That’s right that’s right, how could he get so easily jealous, how very tough for the little lady.” “Yo yo yooo, I smell the flavor of vinegar~” “That brat deserved it, he likes spouting flowers from his mouth, look the trouble his mouth brought him, it ended up drowning him hahaha~” 1

“Alright alright, get to work and put up your prettiest poses.” The merchant snapped his fan close and tapped on those lanterns to quiet them down.

Over there, Shu Yu watched Fu Yu smiling kindly as he drowned that lamp and couldn’t help but gulp a little. It was a good thing she didn’t say she actually really kind of wanted to buy that kind of lantern back, since it was kind of entertaining. Just as she thought this, she heard Fu Wang say, “I can make this kind of lantern. When we get home, I’ll make you one.”

Shu Yu became happy. Just as she wanted to say something, there was some commotion over at the front and the people started scattering to the sides. What was happening? She tried to look over, but Fu Wang brought her into his arms and retreated to the side. They had just retreated beneath a board, when they saw a large number of small lights rushing forward from the front. They were like an overwhelming flood of water breaking through, smashing into the ground and then bouncing up like a bouncing ball, bouncing high in the air before coming down again, passing through the road like a golden wave.

Since they were close, Shu Yu noticed those countless points of lights were individual golden butterflies. They were light and small and completely beautiful. Well, the number was a bit too much though, it could probably slightly trigger one’s trypophobia. She rubbed the small goosebumps on her arms as she watched the wave of lights leave.

The demons were obviously familiar with this kind of situation, after they waited for the wave of lights to pass by, they continued doing what they were originally doing. Shu Yu looked at Fu Wang. He let go of her and shook his head, “I don’t know what kind of creatures those are.”

His words served to surprise Shu Yu more than that huge pile of golden butterflies. There was something that Fu Wang didn’t know!

“The spirit creatures within Mengze are countless, and there are varieties between the five clans as well. It’s unsurprising that I don’t know everything.” Fu Wang didn’t fully understand Shu Yu’s stance on ‘Fu Wang is too amazing and knows everything’. How did she reach this understanding of hers?

“That’s fine. Da-Yu will always be the most amazing person in my heart.” Shu Yu patted Fu Wang’s arm reassuringly, having taken his puzzlement for self-disappointment.

Fu Wang, who has taken a Direct Hit to the heart again…

He suddenly wanted to hug Shu Yu.

Half-way through reaching for her, Shu Yu’s attention was attracted by something a nearby corner. She let go of him and ran over to it.

Fu Wang, who grasped at plain air: “…”

“Da-Yu, look look!” Shu Yu ran back to him while holding something.

Author’s Note:

My brain’s got too many things I wanna write, I will take my sweet time writing them~ This part might be a bit longer~

T/N: (throwing confetti) THIS GIRL IS FREE FROM UNIVERSITY! (but about to return to full-time employment but whatever) I was supposed to pump the translations in early August but got a little busy, sorry for the delay! There will be another update on Sunday, after which updates will resume on those days.

1

Why they aren’t concerned: They are lamp shades (灯影) that parasitize on the lamps. The ones first mentioned are cranes, and these ones take on the form of beautiful men and women; they are both the same race. So, the lamp Fu Wang ‘drowns’ isn’t dead since he isn’t the lantern itself but a lamp shade temporarily parasitizing in the lamp. But he def lost his temporary host.
