183: The Lost Territory, Qinghai

Before Cao Zhixian's body made contact with the ground, an invisible gust of wind lifted him up, preventing him from falling flat on his face. Zhuang Yu was also promptly supported by Xu Ying's mutant guards.

Zhou Fenglan and McRaven were momentarily stunned. They quickly let go of each other's hands. With an apologetic smile, McRaven said, "I'm sorry, I didn't anticipate... that surge of energy just now wasn't something I intentionally released."

Cong Zhenzhong walked over, stating, "We've already verified this elsewhere. When two individuals with the same elemental natural force evolution come into contact, it generates a formidable energy. Moreover, this energy is difficult to control. But don't worry, you'll have enough time to test your strengths before your contact. I'll make sure of that." Finishing his words, he gestured a request toward McRaven to sit at another table.

McRaven shrugged in disappointment, blinked at Zhou Fenglan, and then followed Cong Zhenzhong to another table.

Cong Zhenzhong took a seat at the table next to Cheng Tianbi. The members of the Dragonblood Clan were all fixedly staring at a man behind McRaven. Following their gaze, Cong Xia saw a robust, bearded Caucasian man in his forties, dressed in military uniform. He thought to himself, "This must be House."

House strode toward Shen Changze, and he began speaking fluent Chinese as soon as he opened his mouth. "Colonel Shen, after we parted ways in the United States, I thought we wouldn't meet again for a long time. Yet, just two years have passed, and here we are, meeting again – in China, no less."

"I never thought of it either," Shen Changze replied as he shook House's hand.

Shan Ming didn't even bother to look up, provocatively eyeing House. "You were banned from entering the country, yet here you are. House, you truly are everywhere."

House smiled faintly. "No matter when, seeing Colonel Shen is always a good thing for me." He looked at Shen Changze and continued, "Our pure-blooded dragonblooded individual has even become a fire elemental natural force evolver now. I envy you, kid. You always seem to have the best of everything."

Shan Ming stood up, placed his hand on Shen Changze's shoulder, and pushed him behind himself. Then, he lifted his chin and stared at House, saying fiercely, "House, listen carefully. Everything he has belongs to me. He will never contribute even a bit to you or your country. Understand your position clearly. The world has changed, and if you dare to catch his attention again, he will reduce you to ashes."

House coldly smirked in response.

McRaven positioned his body between the two, patting House's shoulder. "Colonel, I've known you for over a year, and this is the first time I've seen you smile."

House remarked, "You haven't known me long enough." He looked past the two and took a seat at the table.

McRaven chuckled, "Sorry about that, my companion has a bit of an unusual temperament." He shook hands with the people around him one by one. "You're Colonel Shen, you're Colonel Shen's dad, you're Al Moray, and this is Mr. Cheng. I saw your photos on the plane. Oh, you must be Mr. Cong." McRaven grasped Cong Xia's hand and exclaimed with joy, "I know you're going to help me advance. Thank you. I've heard that everyone who receives your assistance successfully advances. I can't wait to find out what I'll become after reaching the second stage. Will I merge with metal?"

Cong Xia smiled and replied, "Barring any surprises, you will."

McRaven gave his hand another shake. "Thank you so much, Mr. Cong." After a polite exchange, he finally took a seat next to House.

Liu Fengyu complained, "This guy talks so much. Just a tall fellow who seems a bit foolish."

Cong Xia explained, "He's not foolish, just extroverted. Xiao Deng, Commander Cao hasn't spoken yet. Put down your chopsticks."

Deng Xiao retracted his hand, pretending as though nothing happened, and turned his face to the side.

Cao Zhixian stepped up to the podium and began his welcome speech. He also presented practical gifts to the cerebral domain evolvers who had come from Moscow and McRaven's group – energy fluid.

Five cameras were set up in the banquet hall, with several photographers weaving through the crowd, incessantly clicking shutters. The next issue of the weekly report was sure to have plenty to write about.

After Cao Zhixian concluded his speech, the feast began. Since the attendees were all influential figures from Beijing who were familiar with each other, they stood and toasted, and Qiao Shan also found an opportunity for interviews. This time, neither Cheng Tianbi nor the other natural force evolvers were the center of attention. Qiao Shan winked at them and headed straight for McRaven's table. Her graceful demeanor, fluent English, and professional aura attracted the attention of many.

McRaven happily accepted her interview, multitasking by coating the flowers in the vase with different colors of metallic sheen while talking. He then offered the vase to Qiao Shan.

Liu Fengyu clicked his tongue twice, saying, "Foreigners really have perfected the art of picking up women."

"Huh? Where? Who's he trying to charm?" Deng Xiao raised his head, enthusiastically asking.

Liu Fengyu lifted his chin in McRaven's direction, and McRaven spread his hand open. A delicate rose-colored heart-shaped piece of metal slowly floated up from his palm, causing Qiao Shan to smile in delight.

Deng Xiao scornfully remarked, "What's so impressive about that?"

Liu Fengyu hooked his neck. "Don't worry, Little Brother Liu will teach you how to charm women when you have time. You don't need all these fancy things. Using eye contact is enough to conquer someone. You're handsome enough to outdo these foreigners."

Tang Yanqiu glanced at him and coldly stated, "If you have the time, teach him something actually useful."

Liu Fengyu raised an eyebrow. "And what's considered actually useful?"

"Teach him combat, teach him how to use weapons, teach him how to survive."

Liu Fengyu snorted, "You take care of teaching him those things, and I'll handle teaching him how to live. Just because you're an old fossil doesn't mean you should expect the whole world to follow you in a life of abstinence."

Tang Yanqiu furrowed his brow. "What's more important, staying alive or sex?"

"It depends on what you're after. Other people's priorities aren't your concern." Liu Fengyu ruffled Deng Xiao's ear. "Eat up quickly. After you're full, I'll take you to have some fun."

"Wow, where are we going?"

Liu Fengyu grinned. "You'll find out soon."

Tang Yanqiu squinted his eyes, looking at Liu Fengyu, who glanced at him, then turned his face away.

Halfway through the banquet, House walked over with a wine glass, approaching Shen Changze to make a toast, creating a somewhat tense atmosphere.

At that moment, Yao Qianjiang also approached, swaying the wine glass in his hand. He laughed and said, "Cong Xia, the wine you're holding is brewed in Jiujian Prefecture. It's made from the rice we used to have, not the coarse and unappetizing mutant crops we have now."

"Oh, it's quite delicious." Cong Xia stood up and clinked glasses with him.

"If you like it, I'll send you a few more cans."

Before Cong Xia could refuse, Cheng Tianbi stood up, placing himself between them. He looked at Yao Qianjiang and said, "I like it. Send it over."

Yao Qianjiang didn't mince words. "I'd feel sorry watching you drink it."

"Then save it."

Yao Qianjiang lowered his voice and said to Cong Xia, "That American guy seems quite interested in Zhou Fenglan. Has Professor Cong said anything about when they'll participate in the experiment?"

"Not yet. We'll have to wait for him to advance first."

"I'll definitely be there when the time comes." Yao Qianjiang smiled at Cheng Tianbi. "Cooperating with a natural force evolver of the same element is a marvelous thing. It's like you can feel their energy flowing within you. You can even sense their breath and heartbeat. Together, you control a surge of energy that's vast as the sea, possessing a world-shattering momentum. That feeling of dominating everything is intoxicating for any man. It makes you want to possess it forever, but it can only be realized when you're together with another person."

Cheng Tianbi coldly stared at him. "Why are you telling me this?"

"I'm telling you this because... I heard that the Russian wood elemental natural force evolver is an absolute beauty. You and her might be a match made in heaven." Yao Qianjiang took a sip of his wine and looked at Cong Xia with a playful smile.

Cong Xia paused for a moment, feeling a bit uneasy in his heart.

Cheng Tianbi clenched his fist, "Don't you like men? You and Wu Yu are a perfect match."

"He's not my type, although, as that American guy said, seeing him is like meeting a first love, it's not a crush, it's the energy calling each other. When you see that goddess, you both will feel the mutual summons, and when your energies merge, you'll feel like your hearts are connected." Yao Qianjiang smirked, "I hope by then, you can restrain yourself from being infatuated with a stunning beauty you're spiritually connected with... Ah, it's hard to imagine, even if you can, can she?"

Cheng Tianbi said expressionlessly, "She's not my type."

"You haven't..."

"She's not," Cheng Tianbi said slowly and deliberately.

Yao Qianjiang lightly tapped the wine glass with his fingertips, squinting at Cheng Tianbi.

Cong Xia said, "Prefecture Lord, we've seen the photo of that goddess. She really... isn't the type Tianbi likes. If energy can create a special bond between two people, then the prince should be pursuing President Wu now." He smiled, "Maybe when you get closer to each other, the energy will be even stronger. If the prince is willing to sacrifice for this to verify, please remember to inform us when you have results."

Yao Qianjiang looked surprised and said with a chuckle, "Cong Xia, you're quite sharp, aren't you? It's not easy to tell usually."

Cong Xia shrugged.

Yao Qianjiang left after dropping the bombshell, "Enjoy your meal, see you in a few days."

After he left, Cong Xia silently sat down and continued eating.

Cheng Tianbi glanced at him, struggling with words.

Sensing his gaze, Cong Xia looked up at him, "What's wrong?"

Cheng Tianbi said, "Nothing."

"Do you think I would care about his words?" Cong Xia said, "I don't believe you'd be interested in any goddess. You're not that kind of person. I'm angry that he's trying to sow discord, damn it." He had actually wanted to kick Yao Qianjiang earlier, although Yao Qianjiang had appeared calm, he was genuinely uncomfortable. Yao Qianjiang had depicted the meeting of two same-element evolved individuals like a romantic scene, his eloquence as a lawyer truly showed, making him want to sew Yao Qianjiang's mouth shut.

Cheng Tianbi said in a deep voice, "Don't believe anything Yao Qianjiang says."

"I understand."

Liu Fengyu smiled at the two, shaking his head.

Cong Xia asked, "What's wrong, Liu ge?"

"Envy."

"What?"

"Never mind, just eat your food."

After the banquet, Cao Zhixian pulled Cheng Tianbi aside and talked for a while. When Cheng Tianbi returned, Zhuang Yao asked, "What did he say?"

"He said that during this American visit, Xu Ying might have other intentions, so we should be cautious."

"Rather than Xu Ying, it's more like Zhuang Yu," Zhuang Yao said sarcastically, "He won't let anything slide. Let's go, let's head back."

The six of them sat on Abu's back and slowly made their way back to the Institute of Science.

As they passed a street, Liu Fengyu patted Abu, "Abu, stop here."

Abu turned back to look at him and slowed down.

"Liu Ge, what are you doing?"

"You guys go back first, I'm taking Xiao Deng to play."

"Play? Where are you going to play?" Cong Xia looked around; it was nearly pitch black, with only a few houses illuminated.

"Don't worry about it." Liu Fengyu hooked his arm around Deng Xiao's neck, "Let's go, Liu Ge will take you to have some fun."

Deng Xiao blinked. "Liu Ge, are you drunk or something?"

"I can handle that bit of alcohol. Are you kidding me?"

As he spoke, he was about to grab Deng Xiao and slide down from Abu's back. Tang Yanqiu quickly pulled him back, "Xiao Deng is right, you're drunk. Abu, let's go."

"Abu, stop!" Liu Fengyu pushed Tang Yanqiu's hand away, "I'm not drunk, I'm taking Xiao Deng to play."

Tang Yanqiu frowned, "What kind of play are you talking about?"

Cheng Tianbi looked into the distance, "Is that the brothel with the red curtains?"

Zhuang Yao held his chin. "Ah, yes, this is the so-called 'red light district.' Any building with lights on along this street is a brothel."

Cong Xia looked at Liu Fengyu speechlessly.

Tang Yanqiu widened his eyes, "You want to... and you want to take Xiao Deng with you?"

Deng Xiao nervously straightened his posture, looking at the distant lights, a mix of nervousness and curiosity.

Liu Fengyu sneered, "What's the matter? None of your business, is it?"

Tang Yanqiu gave him a fierce glare and shouted, "Abu, let's go home!"

Liu Fengyu also shouted, "Abu, stop!"

Abu let out a "meow," turned its head, and looked at them resentfully. They were telling it to go and then telling it to stop; it could only take a couple of steps and then stop again.

Tang Yanqiu said sternly, "Have you gone mad or something? Or are you drunk? Xiao Deng is so young, you..."

"Eighteen, legally an adult," Liu Fengyu gave him a shove. "So much damn fuss. I'm not taking you along, am I?" He grabbed Deng Xiao's hand, "Let's go."

Tang Yanqiu grabbed the collar of his shirt, firmly pressing him against Abu, enunciating each word, "Go... home."

Deng Xiao stood by, not knowing what to do.

Liu Fengyu exclaimed angrily, "Are you out of your damn mind? Do I need you to manage where I want to go? I've been in Beijing for so long, and I haven't had a proper time out yet. Let go!"

Tang Yanqiu shouted angrily, "Abu, let's go!"

Abu shook its head and decided to listen to Tang Yanqiu, speeding up and running.

Liu Fengyu raised his hand and slapped Tang Yanqiu across the face, "Let go!"

Tang Yanqiu held both of his hands, preventing him from moving.

Liu Fengyu said sternly, "I'll say it one last time, let go."

Tang Yanqiu responded coldly, "I said, go home."

Cong Xia whispered, "Could you guys not argue..." This was the most intense argument Tang Yanqiu and Liu Fengyu had ever had. Before, it had mostly been in jest, but now everyone could tell they were genuinely angry.

Cheng Tianbi turned his body away, "Mind your own business."

Zhuang Yao leaned against Abu's head lazily, "If you want to fight, then go down and do it."

Deng Xiao hurriedly said, "Tang Ge, don't be like this. If we don't go, then..."

"Who said I'm not going? I want to take him with me! Tang Yanqiu, you idiot, who the hell gave you the right to control us? Your little buddy is for serving your future wife, mine isn't. I can use mine however the fuck I want!" Liu Fengyu instantly released digestive fluid from his skin. Tang Yanqiu's hand that was holding Liu Fengyu's wrist shook, and blood started to flow. A putrid smell spread through the air.

"Let go of me, damn it!"

Tang Yanqiu stared at him, sweating from the pain but not releasing his grip.

Cheng Tianbi walked up to them, forcefully prying their hands apart. He looked at Liu Fengyu with cold eyes and said, "Your ability isn't meant for dealing with your own people, not at any time. If you do this again, I'll chop off your hand. Both of you, get down there, sort out your issues, and then come back." After saying that, he grabbed Liu Fengyu's arm and threw him off Abu's back.

Tang Yanqiu spread his wings and caught Liu Fengyu before he hit the ground. He grabbed him and flew away. The night was left with Liu Fengyu's shouts.

Deng Xiao sat on the side, hugging his knees. He felt like he had caused trouble and didn't dare to speak, but he also felt wronged. It wasn't like he had wanted to go; even though he was a bit curious...

Cong Xia sighed, "Xiao Deng, it's okay, it's not your fault."

They all could see what was going on between Tang Yanqiu and Liu Fengyu. Maybe only Xiao Deng couldn't understand it fully. One was old-fashioned and rigid, the other was frivolous and promiscuous. The differences in their personalities were too vast; they didn't seem like they belonged to the same world. But maybe it was precisely because of this that they were so intriguing.

When they returned to the Science Academy, Cong Zhenzhong had already come back, and it seemed like he was waiting for them. When a few of them entered the laboratory, Cong Zhenzhong excitedly said, "The production of the new energy source is increasing every day. When you go to Yunnan and Qinghai, you can easily take the transport plane. In a few months' time, we'll be able to reorganize the air force. The number of reconnaissance planes sent to Qinghai and the South China Sea has already doubled. Also, a few of the military factories in Beijing will be reactivated within a month to produce more new energy and weapons. This will also increase employment opportunities. New energy will bring life back to this city."

Zhuang Yao expressed contentment, "As long as we have enough energy, we can restore our previous military strength and stimulate production. Another year, maybe, and we might even see the return of streetlights."

Cong Zhenzhong couldn't contain his happiness, "Have you seen it? Everything is on the right track. The prospects for human reconstruction are excellent. Our agriculture, animal husbandry, communication, and industry are all recovering. Right now, it's just Beijing, but it will gradually spread across the country. Despite the devastation this country has suffered, it's never been defeated. Just give me five more years. Cities north of the Yangtze River will likely recover to the living standards of the 1960s. Another ten years..."

Zhuang Yao said calmly, "Professor, we don't have five years, let alone ten years."

Cong Zhenzhong looked like a frost-bitten eggplant, wilting instantly. He took off his glasses, rubbed his eyes, and forced a bitter smile, "I got too carried away, forgot everything else."

Cong Xia said, "Uncle, you're just exhausted. What you said will come true. We'll not only have five or ten years, but also thousands and tens of thousands of years, as long as we can overcome the Cambrian consciousness."

Cong Zhenzhong nodded, "I've always had confidence."

"Uncle, are you reaching the critical point?"

"Very soon, just a few days away."

"Then for these three days, can you refrain from doing anything other than receiving guests? Rest well and break through to the Second Order."

Cong Zhenzhong smiled, "Alright."

After persuading Cong Zhenzhong back to his room, they also went to rest. Cong Xia's room was next to Liu Fengyu's, and he heard Liu Fengyu's door making noise at midnight.

Two days later, both Cong Zhenzhong and Tang Tingzhi reached the critical point for advancement. As for McRaven Babote, he had already reached it earlier. They decided to let McRaven advance first. Tang Tingzhi wanted Cong Xia to peek into McRaven’'s memories, as much as he could, especially those related to the Dragonblood people.

Everything went smoothly. Cong Xia skillfully opened the doors to McRaven's memories. He was a consistent person, cheerful, enthusiastic, and straightforward. He had once enjoyed a happy family and a successful life. From McRaven's memories, he saw the current situation in the United States, just like China, full of scars.

He saw the preparations made by the U.S. government to confront the apocalypse, many of which were worth emulating. He saw the American cerebral evolved creating mutants and Dragonblood people continuously, and indeed, their Dragonblood people were far more numerous than the mere thirty-odd Tang Tingzhi had mentioned. He saw numerous scenes, leaving him dazed. Of course, not surprisingly, he also discovered the existence of a puppet jade quietly buried deep within McRaven's thoughts.

McRaven successfully advanced, leaving Cong Xia quite exhausted. When he emerged, Zhuang Yao asked, "Did you see anything useful?"

"He has a puppet jade in his mind too, and also, they must have discovered some secret about the Dragonblood people. They have a tremendous number of Dragonblood people."

Tang Tingzhi frowned, "Tremendous? How many?"

"At least hundreds."

Tang Tingzhi’s eyes widened, "How's that possible? More than us? In just over a year?"

Cong Xia nodded, "It's true. They're being cultivated in nutrient solutions, but they have their eyes open."

Shen Changze fell silent. "It looks like I need to meet with House."

"By the way, I'd like to inquire about House's progress in cultivation," Zhuang Yao looked at him. "It would be great if we could access House's memories. They must have discovered something unknown to us. If we can overcome the obstacles to creating Dragonblood individuals, we'll be able to produce even more formidable warriors."

Tang Tingzhi's expression turned solemn as he gazed at Shen Changze. "He came this time with McRaven for a purpose. I'm going too. I want to witness him lying to us and then expose him," he said, taking long strides toward the elevator.

Cong Xia shook his head. "You mustn't provoke the cerebral evolved individuals."

Zhuang Yao responded, "Do whatever needs to be done. Don't waste time. We only have four months left until our planned trip to Qinghai."
